Martial Arts: Celebrating Asia's Greatest Cultural Treasure

Wazzup Pilipinas!

In just seven short years, ONE Championship has evolved from a small mixed martial arts promotion in Singapore trying to make a dent, to what it is now: the largest global sports media property in Asian history, and the undisputed premier martial arts organization in Asia.

From a combined ten events held in their first three years of existence, ONE has exploded into one of, if not the most active martial arts promotions in Asia, with a planned 24 events in 2018, and significantly more on tap in 2019.

Not bad for a company that began as an idea on a piece of paper, and ONE Championship founder Chatri Sityodtong says that they haven’t even scratched the surface.

“On day one, when it was just a piece of paper, and I wrote it on a Powerpoint presentation, this was my vision,” Sityodtong said. “Actually, we’re not even close to my vision yet.”

The promotion’s expansion and growth, dominating television viewership and social media metrics since their inception in 2011, has been nothing short of astounding.

Currently, ONE Championship can be seen on television sets across 138 countries and is followed by a potential 1.7 billion viewers on any given night.

On social media, ONE Championship is garnering a staggering 19 billion impressions across different social media platforms, a massive jump from what used to be an already-impressive 352 million impressions back in 2014.

All these considered, Sityodtong maintains that this is all just the the tip of the iceberg.

“My vision is for us to be a 20 billion dollar property on TV, on laptop, on mobile device, literally four billion people watching it, there’s a “Manny Pacquiao” in every single country, everyone is crazy about it, we have TV, movies, software, games, that was my vision. We’re still only a part-way of the vision.” Sitdyodtong continued.

And while a lot of ONE Championship’s success has to do with the people behind the company, equally, or even more responsible is the massive Asian fanbase that ONE has managed to capture.

From Singapore, to Manila, Bangkok to Myanmar, and all across the continent, ONE Championship has become a highly-anticipated attraction.

But what is it that has made ONE Championship such a massive success in Asia?

Proudly calling themselves ‘The Home of Martial Arts’, ONE Championship has done a masterful job of promoting the beauty and essence of martial arts in its purest form.

ONE Championship has put “Asia’s greatest cultural treasure’’ front and center.

“Am I surprised that ONE Championship has taken off? No, because Asia is the home of martial arts, and we are showcasing the true beauty of martial arts. We’re not showcasing fighting and violence, yes, it’s an element of the game, competition is an element of the game, but we’re showcasing their life stories, their values.” Sityodtong said.

Veering away from the negative stereotypes commonly seen on Western counterparts, ONE Championship instead proudly celebrates the deep-rooted Asian values of integrity, humility, honor, respect, courage, discipline, and compassion.

These values are present in each and every ONE Championship athlete on the roster.

Stemming from what was already a strong mixed martial arts-based product, ONE Championship began to showcase more traditional and regional martial arts, such as Myanmar’s Lethwei, Thailand’s Muay Thai, and Indonesia’s Pencak Silat.

ONE Championship also showcased one of the most important pillars of mixed martial arts in submission grappling and with dream matches between some of the world’s top Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners.

In early-2018, ONE Championship went all-in in their promotion of striking-based martial arts, introducing the ONE Super Series which featured kickboxing and Muay Thai world champions from all over the world, including Giorgio Petrosyan, Nong-O Gaiyanghadao, Sam-A Gaiyanghadao, and Yodsanklai Fairtex to name a few.

"ONE Championship is now the world’s largest martial arts organization, in that if you think about the umbrella of martial arts and all the verticals of Muay Thai, Kickboxing, submission grappling, boxing, mixed martial arts, these are all the verticals, and I decided we really wanna do all and celebrate all of Asia’s greatest martial arts, full stop." Sityodtong said back in April, days before the launch of the ONE Super Series in Manila.

In addition, ONE Championship also introduced a five-rope ring for the first time, reminiscent of the stage that the uber-popular PRIDE FC used to employ back during their heyday in Japan -- a throwback to one of Asia’s pioneer mixed martial arts promotions.

“ONE Championship being the home of martial arts, Asia being the home of martial arts, it’s a way for us to celebrate across the entire continent. We want to showcase Lethwei, which we have, showcase Silat, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Wushu, Sanda, Kung Fu, all the beautiful arts of Asia, this is what I want to showcase." Sityodtong added.

Following the success of the ONE Super Series, ONE Championship took another step towards total martial arts domination with the announcement of WBC Super Flyweight Champion and Thai boxing superstar Srisaket Sor Rungvisai’s promotional debut, happening at ONE: KINGDOM OF HEROES on 6 October in Bangkok, Thailand.

In partnership with Nakornluong Promotions, Rungvisai, among boxing’s the top-ten pound-for-pound talents will be defending his title against Mexican challenger Iran Diaz in what will be ONE Championship’s first venture into boxing.

Sityodtong also issued an open invitation to arguably the most-well known Asian boxer in history, eight-division world champion and current reigning WBA (regular) Welterweight World Champion Manny Pacquiao.

"What we want to do is showcase all the combat sports, all the flavors, and hopefully we'll get multi-division champions across the different platforms to really celebrate Asia's greatest cultural treasure, martial arts." Sityodtong said.

And while ONE Championship has started bringing in big names in martial arts, the promotion has no shortage of their own homegrown heroes and champions.

Sityodtong has put a premium in building Asian heroes, and the promotion has done just that with Asian household names such as Eduard Folayang from the Philippines, Angela Lee from Singapore, and Aung La N Sang from Myanmar.

For Sityodtong, athletes like Folayang, Lee, and N Sang are the types of heroes that the Asian culture celebrates for being the embodiment of true Asian values.

“If you look at the history, who’re the biggest celebrities in Asia? Any industry, across all walks, Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, Jet Li, Donnie Yen all happened to be martial artists, all happened to be amazing in their respective arts but as human beings they’re kind, gentle, humble, strong, courageous, respectful, compassionate.

“This is something Asians care about, it’s not an accident that Manny Pacquiao or Yao Ming reflect and exemplify those values, and I don’t think that would change. This is something very deep rooted in Asian history, Asian culture, and Asian values. This is something that we’re very focused in celebrating.” Sityodtong added.

Because of the hard work put in by the people behind it, ONE Championship has evolved to what it is now: the number one martial arts organization in the world.

From building heroes inside the cage to dominating the metrics outside of it, ONE Championship will continue to grow, and so will the fanbase that continues to support it.

Smart Employee Off to Cupertino After Winning Apple Competition

Wazzup Pilipinas!

An employee of Smart Communications will fly to the Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California this August after a stellar showing at the Apple Experts Camp held recently in Singapore.

Charles Bartolaba – a customer solutions officer at the Smart Store in Ali Mall, Cubao – was chosen as one of two Philippine representatives to Apple’s three-day Worldwide Excellence Summit in the US. At the summit, he and other Apple Experts from all over the world will learn from Apple executives and go on an exclusive tour of the Apple Park.

The Cupertino summit is expected to equip the participants – who are all customer-facing personnel in stores that sell Apple products and services – with the knowledge and skills needed to provide better customer service in their respective stores.

Bartolaba was selected as Philippine representative after a panel interview at the Singapore camp joined by Apple Experts from the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Two representatives were picked out of 10 participants per country.

Among the 10 Filipino participants in Singapore were Smart Store front-liners Jayson Quilapio of the SM North Edsa branch and Rosette Abitria of the Cash & Carry store. They got in the Singapore camp after Apple’s assessment of their video entries and their performance as Apple Experts for the past year.

Apple has partnered with Smart and other companies for the Apple Expert Program, which ensures that stores have a front-liner who is very knowledgeable on Apple products and services. All Smart Stores in the Philippines have at least one Apple Expert.

To be considered an Apple Expert, employees have to undergo quarterly workshops, answer weekly quizzes, get at least a 90% score in the quarterly exam, cascade their learnings to fellow front-liners, and get a score of at least 4 out of 5 from Apple’s mystery shoppers who go to stores to check on the Experts’ knowledge and demonstration skills.

“It is an honor to represent Smart and the Philippines in the Apple summit in California. It boosts my drive to provide our customers with world-class service, and to cascade my learnings to my colleagues,” Bartolaba said.

MARINA, JICA to Boost Shipbuilding Industry of the Philippines

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) strengthens collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to boost Philippines’ shipbuilding and shiprepair industry.

“I am happy that JICA is taking the initiative to collaborate with us by extending technical assistance and expertise. JICA’s aid will greatly help us in promoting and developing our shipbuilding industry. We are hoping to further improve this relationship for the interest of Japan and Philippine maritime industry,” MARINA Administrator Rey Leonardo Guerrero said.

JICA Senior Representative Tetsuya Yamada assured that JICA will continue to extend technical assistance and expertise to the MARINA in developing standard design for locally made ships, in establishing the Philippines’ first-ever maritime industrial hub, and in setting up a financing facility for local shipbuilders and ship owners.

Furthermore, JICA expressed support in the implementation of MARINA’s ten-year Maritime Industry Development Plan (MIDP) which guides the MARINA in making the local shipbuilding and shiprepair industry globally-competitive and technologically-responsive.

Finally, JICA pledged to provide Japanese experts who will orient the MARINA in crafting the retirement criteria of aging domestic ships. To date, MARINA is in process of drafting the rules and regulations in addressing the increasing number of obsolete vessels operating for more than 30 years to further uphold safety and security within the Philippine maritime borders.

With these commitments, MARINA and JICA intend to attract more investors to support the modernization and ultimately, the transformation of the Philippines into a major shipbuilding and shiprepair nation.

DOST-SEI Boosts Scholarship Programs

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) revealed recent developments regarding its scholarship programs, which include an increase in the number of slots being offered and a higher monthly stipend rate for all its scholars.

DOST Secretary Fortunato de la Peña and DOST-SEI Director Josette Biyo made the announcement in a press conference held last July 18 at the Philippine International Convention Center in Manila.

The event coincides with the celebration of the 2018 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW), which Biyo considers an opportune time to drum up the public’s interest in DOST’s scholarship program.

DOST-SEI recently posted the names of 8,994 new qualifiers for its undergraduate scholarships, the biggest batch since the program started in 1958.

Biyo hopes to further increase the number of scholars being supported in by DOST-SEI from 20,618 in 2016 to a target number of 33,256 scholars for 2019.

Scholars will also benefit from the increased monthly stipend of 7,000 pesos per month from the previous amounts of 5,000 to 6,000 pesos.

This is in addition to the 40,000 pesos per year tuition and other school fees subsidy, 10,000 pesos per year book allowance, one-time 1,000-peso uniform allowance; one-time 1,000-peso graduation allowance, one economy-class round trip fare per year for those studying outside their home province, and group insurance.

“Through the new benefits in our scholarship program, we hope to get more scholars and graduates who will eventually work in S&T for the country,” de la Peña said.

Biyo acknowledged top scholar-graduates, Ruben James Rosal and John Kenneth Malilay, who joined the panel to share their experiences as DOST scholars. “The testimonies of our scholars are always the best proof of the effectiveness of our programs,” she said.

Interested Grade 12 students are encouraged to submit their applications for the 2019 DOST-SEI Undergraduate Science and Technology Scholarship until August 31, 2018Examination will be on October 21, 2018

Incoming 3rd year college students taking identified S&T programs are likewise invited to apply in the Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS) program. JLSS application ends on September 14, 2018. Examination is scheduled on October 20, 2018. For details, you may log on to www.sei.dost.gov.ph or email seischolarships@gmail.com.

Short Film on T'boli Tops CCP's Gawad Alternatibo

Wazzup Pilipinas!
A film about a T’boli dancer, who experiences a sudden turn of events in her pursuit of a good life for her family, bagged first prize in the Short Feature category and Best Regional Entry at the 30th Gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video awards night held last August 6 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Tanghalang Manuel Conde.
RufylaColeen Tanco‘s capstone project under the digital filmmaking program of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) School of Design and Arts (SDA) bested more than a hundred entries in the said category. The young filmmaker hails from Koronadal City, South Cotabato.

“Rufyla started when our house helper left us in her pursuit to get married to a foreigner. She is a 23-year-old girl who desired for a good life even if it took her to a red-light district in Manila. She believes that only a wealthy man can save her from poverty. As luck would have it, she nailed it,” the Benilde alumna explained when asked what inspired her to make her thesis film.
“I hope the film will create and build a language that helps delineate what it means to be living in a remote area in the southern part of the Philippines. I also hope that the film will root for the indigenous people and make everyone aware not to treat the Filipino culture like a worthless material,” Tanco added after learning about her twin victories.

In addition, other Benilde entries E and Ang Kabit ni Papa won honorable mention in the Experimental category. Directed by Benilde film alumnus, and now humanities and literature professor Jose Mojica, E zeroes in on a man who wakes up in an unfamiliar room and sees a mirror for the first time. By looking at himself, he discovers sexuality and sin.
Meanwhile, Ang Kabit ni Papa by Benilde film student Robin Estargo is an experimental drama which focuses on a boy’s recollection of memories of his father who works abroad. The film explores confined rooms and empty spaces, with an unending fear of being discovered for telling the uneasiness in this what-could-have-been relationship.

“Since I was born, my father has always traveled abroad to work with no other choice. We rarely see each other in a year, and whenever we do, we rarely talk. It is this separation that makes us move away from each other inch by inch through time, that there is this fear that our relationship in the future would be non-existent,” Estargo revealed.

“Through time, I have met friends who have Overseas Filipino Worker parents as well, with some having more unfortunate conditions than mine. This separation results to doubt, sparking conflict in the family, as the child does not know the distant lifestyle of the parent, and vice versa,” the young filmmaker concluded.

Rufyla is the first in BenildeFilm’s 10-year history to win the grand prize in the Gawad Alternatibo. The department came close to accomplishing the feat in 2018 when Benilde films dominated the 29th Gawad by bagging four of five awards, with the first prize going to Sa Saiyang Isla of Christian Candelaria from the University of the Philippines Film Institute.
Last year, Benildean filmmakers also shone in the Gawad Alternatibo’s Short Feature category. Alfonso Silva bagged second place for his short film ProxyAndrea Arias and Mia Rosero placed third for their entry Auntwo SusanTim Rone Villanueva and Vince Sevillano got honorable mention awards for Santa Nena! and Ma’am La, respectively.
Rufyla is also among the short films that will compete at FACINE 25: The 25th Annual Filipino International Cine Festival from October 18 to 21 in San Francisco, California.
Established in 1987, Gawad Alternatibo is considered the longest-running independent film festival and competition of its kind in the ASEAN region. A few years ago, it became one of the major components of the annual Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival.

SMM Strategy for Legal Startup

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Any startup today needs social media for growth and expansion. Social media marketing is almost becoming mandatory for any business that wants to excel. You definitely need this for all legal start-ups. Social media has become a very essential avenue of reaching to prospective clients. There are very many outfits making use of this strategy and therefore, it is not just enough to get started with it.

The help of a law essay writing service could be very useful in realizing all that goes into the successful launching and use of an SMM strategy. Your approach should be in such a way to add value to your marketing efforts even as you consider applying it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Getting started with a business is usually challenging, particularly if you are looking forward to having a social media presence. People make the mistake of not having a clear social media approach. Social media should be at the very centre of your marketing options and not just an option among others. Secondly, start-ups make the mistake of not knowing what to do. If you do the wrong thing online, you can easily damage your reputation instead of building it.

Things to do in an SMM Strategy
To succeed in what you want to embark on, you must decide where your focus is on your social efforts.

Here is what to do:

Have a marketing plan in place taking into consideration the social media aspect. Come up with objectives and goals that you want to achieve especially in creating brand awareness and social media. This is where you decide on where to focus all of your efforts in social media marketing.

What aspects are you looking at? Is it about getting likes and follows? Have metrics to assess how your startup is performing online. Different social strategies have different metrics: leads generated, site traffic, revenue generated, sign-ups and so on.

Procedure to follow
To enhance efficiency in what you are doing, the plan should always come before having your social media profiles. Once all this is set here is what to do:

Choose the social networks to use for the strategy

Recruit team members  to help out in your online marketing efforts

Establish an online community as ambassadors for your brand

Come up with ways of tracking your startup performance.

Final Thoughts
It is advisable for legal startups to embrace SMM strategies owing to their usefulness in making them grow. All the same, the right measures should be put in place in order to gain the full benefits of employing such a strategy.
