Getting Your Business Ahead in the Digital Journey

Wazzup Pilipinas!

At this moment, we are witnessing an explosion of connectivity, data and innovation. As this hyper connectivity is changing the game for most businesses, customers in turn, are radically changing the rules as they demand a simpler, seamless and personalized experience at every touch point.

Rising expectations

You could call it life imitating art, where customers are setting sky-high expectations for real-world encounters, demanding a personalised, consistent, interconnected experience across every touch point.

As society advances in the digital economy, consumers demand access to products and services via multiple channels, putting pressure on companies to provide an integrated experience. It is no longer sufficient to simply deliver a slick experience on a mobile device in isolation. You can’t expect your customers to be happy with one great experience that doesn’t extend beyond the confines of their mobile screens.

In the Philippines, 44.2 million of the population are active internet users, with 90% these users having active social media accounts, based on a report by Asia Digital Marketing Association and the Internet World statistics[i]. A 2016 Digital Experience Report conducted by SAP found that 54% of Filipino consumers are satisfied with their digital interactions with a brand or an enterprise. This exhibits a positive outcome, but as consumers’ awareness of digital services increase, their expectations continue to grow and evolve in parallel. The challenge lies in keeping up with (or better yet, being ahead of) their rising expectations to slant the satisfaction upwards.

6 Feng Shui Tips Before Starting Your Business

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Applying feng shui to your business is a great way to achieve balance, calm and even success. Feng shui is an age-old science that can be described simply as balancing man with nature. It’s very common for businesses to apply feng shui principles to their workspaces, habits and schedules. But did you know it’s also possible to apply feng shui before you even start a business? In fact, there are a few principles that you should think about before you consider going into business in the first place.

One of the country’s leading feng shui practitioners and experts, Master Francis Gaw, are giving tips to those who want to delve into a business.

Here are some of his helpful tips and requirements that influence who, when and where to open your business, as well as some feng shui advice on how to keep it going strong.

1. DO determine if you’re made to be a businessman. As they say, ‘Leaders are born, not made.’ According to Francis, so are businessmen. He states, “If your birthday is right (you were born on the right day, in the right year) you might be born a businessman.” The best way to find out is by consulting a credible feng shui practitioner and telling him your exact birth date, but if you’re afraid of the answer, don’t worry. He adds that, “If you are born not to be a businessman but you want to have a business, your solution is to find a partner who is born a businessman.” Additionally, he also adheres to logic above superstition, so he adds that before feng shui, there are two more important things to consider – feasibility, and the human factor (whether or not you know the business well, whether you have the skill to handle it, etc.).

2. DON’T start your business during the Ghost Month. This is a commonly believed superstition, and it still stands to this day. In fact, you shouldn’t start anything during the Ghost Month – weddings, businesses, moving out, etc. This year, the Ghost Month falls on August 22 to September 19, so make sure you aren’t starting your business anywhere within that range. Also, there will always be good days and bad. For example, good days to start a business in February 2017 include the 5th, 14th and 23rd. So consult a practitioner to know if your target launch date is a good one, or a recipe for misfortune.

3. DO set up in a place you’re comfortable in. Generally, when you’re choosing an office space, look for one that is well-ventilated, bright, and relaxing as soon as you enter. If you feel something wrong, eerie or heavy about a place, it’s probably best not to take it – or at least, to have someone cleanse the place before you set up. Arrangements of objects and décor are only second priority to finding a place that’s peaceful, comfortable and good for work.

4. DON’T adhere to all symbols and superstitions. Contrary to popular belief, Francis says that only 30% of superstitions should really be followed. Tumbok sa kalye – not setting up at a t-junction – is a superstition to remember, as well as having crystals in your workplace or even on your person. Crystals release piezoelectricity, which science itself has found to be a positive energy that can improve your temperament throughout the day. Water is also an important symbol, although you should check with an expert on where it should or should not be placed in your office.

5. DO push for sustainability. It’s the only real secret, according to Francis. It’s the foolproof habit – keeping yourself in the market, staying in the know, consistently pushing through both profit and loss – and it’s the only one that’s proven to work 100% of the time. As Francis says, “Sustain your business, and one day you will harvest your crop.”

6. DON’T think luck is all that matters. It’s easy to pretend that with feng shui and good luck, your business will boom whether or not you’re working for it. But even the experts themselves debunk that theory. Francis adds, “Even if you are lucky, if you are not hardworking, what will happen to you? But if you are unlucky, even if you’re just at home, bad luck will come to you.”

In the end, our destiny still depends on hard work, faith and prayer, plus a little bit of luck. As Francis says, we find signs through feng shui. Dates, experiences, and occurrences can point the way, but what matters is that we find them so they can lead us to where we want and need to be.

Pinoy Entrepreneur Summit Presents Top Caliber Speakers on Entrepreneurship

Wazzup Pilipinas!

With an impressive line-up of speakers, most of which I have met and know personally, the Pinoy Entrepreneur Summit was indeed a great spectacle to behold. For me, seeing these people gathered together in one venue was a dazzling feat. I have to congratulate the organizers of this event for their ability to make the event overloading with so many useful information shared by these highly respectable resource persons.

Having the theme "Getting INto Business: From Passion to Action" the entire day was filled with enthusiastic students all eager to absorb all the knowledge and experience shared throughout the day. I am sure that many got the inspiration to equally match, or even surpass, the achievements of the speakers that day.

Held at the Megamall Conference Center, 5th floor of SM Megamall in Ortigas Pasig city, the Pinoy Entrepreneur Summit is a highly relevant source of information especially for business students who all want to be the best in their chosen fields. Thus, there were many sectors of entrepreneurship that were represented at the event.

From startups to advocacy or social entrepreneurships, the speakers shared insights that you won't normally learn from school. Most of the time, the most significant learning comes from the actual experience in the field when you are at your actual work area where you experience all the real life scenarios that are all challenging and most of the time reaching breaking points. It is only at our actual work where we encounter the various trials and challenges, and where we learn to become more resourceful and creative in order to meet our deadlines and reach our goals.

JCI Manila: University of Leaders, Incubator of Movers

Wazzup Pilipinas!

It was 1947, a mere two years after World War II, and Manila was still devastated – the second most-destroyed city of the war. Its former glory was replaced by rubble, and reconstruction had barely begun.

Around the same time, a young man named Artemio L. Vergel De Dios was inspired by a feature in PIC Magazine on the US Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees), which helped the government through the leadership of individuals. He took it upon himself to help rebuild the nation through the first and oldest leadership organization in Asia, the Junior Chamber International Manila. Formerly known as the Manila Jaycees, Vergel de Dios and Ramon V Del Rosario knew that was the only way to successfully restore Manila to its former glory was to get purposeful individuals focused on the same goal. Thus, on September 12, 1947, the first JCI Chapter in Asia was born.

Since then, JCI Manila has been fostering leaders who help strengthen the nation by addressing modern-day devastations like extreme poverty, natural disasters, unemployment, and malnourishment through a vision of providing development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change.

As the leading global network of young, active citizens in the country, JCI Manila has long been known as the early training grounds of notable alumni who have become movers and shakers not just in their respective fields, but within the country and around the world. Within its ranks rose such names as Mr. Washington Sycip, Ambassador Alfonso Yuchengco, Ambassador Ramon V. Del Rosario, and Mr. Henry Sy. JCI Manila has become an incubator of leaders in the public and private sectors, immersing themselves in civic duties that help propel the country and its citizens forward.

Deputy Executive Director Mon Ibrahim of the Department of Science ande Technology-Information Communication Technology Office (DOST-ICTO) led the launch of the roadmap which he described as a list of what the Philippine startup community needs to do.

OLX Activates More Filipinos to Practice the Classifieds Lifestyle

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Curiosity buzzed as inquisitive media reps gathered at the recent event for OLX Philippines, the country’s leading online classifieds platform. It was an intimate event between OLX and the media to talk about the changes since the rebranding and their plans moving forward.

RJ David, Co-founder and Managing Director of OLX Philippines and one of the most successful online entrepreneurs in the country, talked lengthily about these changes. “We want to provide win-win exchanges for everyone by giving consumers equal buying and selling opportunities. We also want them to become more madiskarte in buying and selling 2nd hand items online.”

David added that they have expanded to Cebu and merged with another online classified ads platform to encourage more Filipinos to get into the habit of online buying and selling. Add to these, the improved look and feel of OLX Philippines: faster loading pages, more simplified sell form and an improved report button for keeping spam and scam ads at bay. To provide a fair selling venue and to promote high quality ads, OLX has removed the feedback system and minimized the number of free ad slots.

OLX has also taken a big step by releasing and managing their own content platform called OLX Yaman. Jean Magboo, OLX Philippines Content Marketing Manager, explains, “We’re now more than just a buy and sell platform, OLX is a service that provides an opportunity for Filipinos to make smart and practical choices that can lead to an improved life.”

Singapore-Based Budget Airline Fuels Business Growth with NetSuite

Wazzup Pilipinas!

NetSuite Inc., the industry's leading provider of cloud-based financials / ERP and omnichannel software suites, today announced that Scoot, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, has deployed NetSuite as its core financial management platform in a two-tier ERP model aligned with an on-premise SAP ERP application in place at the parent Singapore Airlines.

Scoot chose NetSuite after considering other major ERP solutions due to factors such as speed of implementation, low cost of ownership, real-time business intelligence and reporting, as well as the breadth and depth that NetSuite provides in financial reporting, multi-currency management and budgeting – all within one unified platform.

Since implementation, NetSuite has supported Scoot in its network growth across Asia and Australia, enabling Scoot to attain cost-efficiencies and speed to market. Business agility through NetSuite has been critical in helping Scoot drive its exponential business growth while expanding its network across 15 destinations in China, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.

Scoot views NetSuite as its core ERP solution in its plan to triple its fleet size over the next several years with 20 new Boeing 787 Dreamliners to increase its presence in the medium and long-haul segment.

“As a startup, Scoot wanted a modern, agile business platform that could scale rapidly while ‘future-proofing’ our company for long-term innovation and growth,” said Ng Long Jian, Scoot Head of Finance. “We looked at other major and more established ERP, but NetSuite was the clear winner in meeting our requirements for cost-efficiency, fast deployment, real-time visibility into the business and flexibility. NetSuite is the perfect fit for Scoot to enable us to transform our business operations and support our growth.”

Building a Business Aligned Security Strategy for Our Organization

Wazzup Pilipinas!

"I am looking at these security solutions because they protect these assets that drives 3 million dollars of revenue for our organization. Can you please approve this." is a much better statement to hear from the IT manager than just saying "Please approve this firewall that we need to buy." The CEO or CFO would know that we are thinking about the business. Remapping your proposal using business lingo is a more effective way to convince management to approve your plans.

The same way that Fortinet does not hard sell their products. They try to understand the situation of the organization so they could pinpoint the actual weakness in the security infrastructure to provide the better solution to their needs or requirements. It's not about quickly offering an equipment that they can buy to address the issues but to understand first the problem like the challenges and specific points that needs protection. There really is a need to see the big picture before a recommendation should be given.

It's basically educating the clients on what are the possible things to do or maximize on their existing infrastructure rather than letting them figure it out on their own and adjust on the product's capabilities and limitations. This allows the clients to get the most appropriate solution from Fortinet.

At an intimate media discussion, experts from Fortinet led by Alvin Rodrigues, Fortinet Marketing Development Director for Southeast Asia and Hong Kong.

Also present during the discussions where Jeff Castillo, Managing Country Director of Fortinet, Nap Castillo, Regional Pre-Sales Consultant of Fortinet and Rachelle Alcantara, Channel Account Manager of Fortinet.

The event was held at Café 1771 located at Greenbelt 5 in Makati city and attended by select members of the media. A presentation was held while food was being served to everyone. We enjoyed a delightful feast from Café 1771 while questions were being thrown to the Fortinet guys.

The Looming Talent Crisis: Research Shows Companies Unprepared for Future of Work

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Businesses are facing the most diverse work environment that the world has ever seen with five different generations working together, across geographies — each with different skills, experiences and work habits. More of these workers will be freelancers and long-term contractors. All of this represents a major opportunity for productivity, talent development and employee engagement, but according to new wide-scale research from Oxford Economics, most companies are unprepared to capitalize on it.

As revealed in Workforce 2020, an independent, global study by Oxford Economics with support from SAP SE, most companies recognize the importance of managing an increasingly international, diverse and mobile workforce. However, the majority lack the strategy, culture and solutions to do so. Oxford Economics surveyed more than 5,400 employees and executives and interviewed 29 executives in 27 countries, finding that two-thirds of businesses have not made significant progress toward building a workforce that will meet their future business objectives. The announcement was made at SuccessConnect 2014, being held September 9-11 in Las Vegas.

“To gain advantage in the future, businesses must understand the workforce of tomorrow and its importance to bottom-line success — today,” said Edward Cone, managing editor of Thought Leadership at Oxford Economics. “Our research shows that the C-suite is out of touch with HR on business strategy and priorities, and workers are not getting what they want from their employers in terms of incentives, benefits and training.”

EMC Global Data Protection Index: Key Results & Finding for the Philippines

Wazzup Pilipinas!

IT disruptions are a common and costly business experience. Even Cloud computing, big data and mobile devices are putting additional pressure on IT’s ability to protect data. Organizations need to develop a trusted data protection strategy that creates a bridge between today’s and tomorrow’s workloads.

EMC investigates the data protection strategies and capabilities of enterprises in 24 countries. The research surveyed 3,300 IT decision-makers from companies that employ over 250 employees.

Mr. Ronnie Latinazo, EMC Country Manager, revealed the results of their survey last December 4, 2014 at Society Lounge located at the Atrium in Makati during the EMC Data Protection Landscape Media Briefing. A Thanksgiving Party followed immediately afterwards to thank the members of the media for their year-long support.

The Global Data Protection Index: Key Results and Finding for the Philippines was shared to us that day. The survey says 62% of the respondents said that  at least one of the mega trends (big data, hybrid Cloud, mobility) is difficult to protect and one important thing we need to know is that there is a trend happening in the market. Companies are moving from a physical into a more agile world swamped with high digital growth largely due to these trends.
