For selfies, groupfies, and other photo ops, the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL definitely gives you what you paid for, and even more, as it's a very powerful smartphone that is a small computer by itself using the familiar Windows operating system. As a blogger, it's the better valued choice for its price range.
It is the smartphone I used to take all the awesome photos and videos during many events and travels. As a blogger, it's highly recommended. It's really great in mobile photography and videography.
If you've seen some of my photos and videos, some of them were taken using the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL. I used it for the coverage of some of the activities in Binondo including a video of a long dragon passing thru Chinatown. It was also used for the coverage of the dry run opening of the Trampoline Park in Mandaluyong, the coverage of the Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta where we did a lot of activities which led to the printing of a coffee table book where all our Pampanga adventure were immortalized in print.
It was also the one I used for food photography at the new Solstice Bistro and Boulangerie located at Rockwell in Makati, of Skippy's Bar and Grill located in Bonifacio Global City, and of Eight and Co. Restaurant somewhere in Addition Hills of Quezon City. This means it's also great for food photography.
The Microsoft Lumia 950 XL Unboxed
I used the smartphone during the press conference where Twitter peeps came to the Philippines for the Twitter City #Buhay Twitter event, at our media partnership event for the Sea Expo or the 8th Philippine Boatshow and Nautical Lifestyle Expo and Conference, at the Art Fair Philippines 2016, Art for Everyone, and Open Source Museum at 8Layer Technologies exhibits, a presscon coverage where Vice-Presidential candidate Gringo Honasan was the primary guest, my exclusive interview with Senatorial candidate Ping Lacson at his campaign headquarters, and another exclusive interview with the Gracenote band.
I also used it in the video walkthrough of the People Power Experiential Museum in Camp Aguinaldo, at the launch of a competing smartphone brand. Lol!
What can I say? Isn't it very obvious that I adore the phone so much that I keep using it at my event coverages. I'm sure if my Sony mirrorless camera can talk, it will be ranting why I haven't used it as much as I've used the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL.
What are the cons? Though its rear and front cameras are both a lot better than lower priced smartphones, the night shots are still better using my Sony mirrorless camera. But if you're going to compare it with other smartphones within its price range, the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL is very competitive, if not the best contender, for similar smartphone brands that boast of powerful built-in cameras.
The Microsoft Lumia 950 XL still needs some more improvements for night shots, and at areas where light is not at its fullest. Thus it may take more time before a smartphone can fully replace the more powerful and flexible mirrorless and DSLR cameras, especially those with powerful lenses.
But as they say, no matter how high-end and expensive your smartphone camera, DSLR, or mirrorless cameras, and everything else in between, true great photos come out if the photographer is both creative and passionate enough in learning how to find the best views, angles, lighting, etc., to produce quality shots. The final or ongoing output, or product, is mainly powered by a keen eye for creativity.
For the technical specifications, you can read about it from a previous article we wrote about the media launch of the product last December.
