It is not very often that I get to be in a room filled with geniuses!, and they happen to be part of the world where I live and breath. The IT industry has continued to become so cool and elite mostly because of the rockstar developers that are totally changing, and practically dictating, the way we live in this interconnected and online society.
Triple Webby award-winner Freelancer.com was able to gather the best bunch of smart guys and gals in a room together while having a bit of fun fueled by pizza, coffee and cola. The Manila Dev Challenge, that was held a few days ago at SaDoCe located at the Smart Tower in Makati, definitely attracted a lot of great minds.
From the many hopefuls who submitted their works online, there were just 40 finalists who competed for the final rounds. The surviving finalists, who undertook six grueling hours of nonstop coding, maybe first timers in a coding competition, but they were already in the Startups and IT professional industry for quite some time now.
A first round reduced the number into twelve, and the second round finally gave awards to six winners that brought home some fabulous cash prizes and the recognition as among the potential great developers of the IT industry.
Awarded as Manila Dev Challenge 2013's rockstar developer was Bryan Zarzuela, a Systems Specialist at Pilipinas Teleserv. Kevin Charles Atienza of Kalibrr was declared as second best, while Marte Soliza of Insync copped the third place, and lastly, Johan Sten got the fourth place. On the other hand, two people caught the attention of the judges and they were given special awards. Tim Joseph Dumol of Kalibrr got the special award for the Best Performance in the Preliminaries, while Joseph Emmanuel Dayo of Friendster grabbed the special award for the Best Solution for the Hardest Question.
Zarzuela, as the champion of the Manila Dev Challenge, took home the P100,000 prize money; Atienza, the second placer took home P40,000; and Soliza, the third placer, took home P20,000; Sten, the fourth placer took home P10,000; lastly Joseph Dayo and Tim Dumol took home P15,000.
Adric Schreuders (Regional Director of Engineering at Freelancer.com), the brainchild of Manila Dev Challenge, has these to say: ".... Filipino developers are truly world class by creating complete solutions to quite difficult problems in an extremely short time frame. These guys are true role models to any other Filipinos in the tech industry or studying to be. They are in a very dynamic and exciting field and we hope that by showing what these guys are capable of we can inspire others."
Yes! I have very high expectations from my fellow Filipinos. They have the skills, creativity and ingenuity to become extremely successful in their every endeavor. We are glad that there are many companies out there that are setting up competitions such as the Manila Dev Challenge to become an opportunity for my fellow Filipinos to shine out and be recognized. May they eventually become the inspiration of the future generation so that it will forever change the world for the better.
