PHLPost Commemorates 75 Years of the Battle of Manila

The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) released a commemorative stamp to mark the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Manila.

PHLPost honors the men, women and children who perished during the Battle of Manila seventy-five years ago. The commemorative stamps features the Memorare by sculptor Peter de Guzman which stands at the Plazuela de Santa Isabel in Intramuros.

The monument depicts a mother in despair, cradling her lifeless baby in her arms. Inscribe on it is a dedication by National Artist Nick Joaquin which says: To the innocent lives lost: We remember them, nor shall we ever forget.

Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo Puyat, Jose Miguel Cabarrus, President, Memorare Manila 1945, the association of civilian survivors and descendants of the Battle of Manila and Maximo Sta. Maria III, OIC, Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) Assistant Postmaster General for Marketing unveiled the commemorative stamp infront of the Memorare monument in San Agustin Church located at the historic Intramuros Manila. 



The Battle of Manila, also called by Americans as The Liberation of Manila from February, 1945 to March, 1945 was the bloodiest major battle and the most horrible scene of destruction during World War II. Historians consider Manila as the most destroyed city during the war.

The Second World War devastated Manilas landscape. One of those beautiful buildings that was destroyed was the Manila Central Post Office, a neo-classical building designed by the famous Filipino architect Juan Arellano.

PHLPost has printed 40,000 copies of the stamp sold for 12 pesos each, was layout by in-house graphic artist Rodine C. Teodoro.
