Floyd Mayweather Jr. is now celebrating his unanimous decision victory over Manny Pacquiao during the welterweight unification championship bout on May 2 Saturday (May 3 Sunday, Asia time) at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
However, many Pinoys are grieving from the lost. Some of our fellow Filipinos are calling Mayweather as gay (Gayweather) saying he only ran and hugged Manny Pacquiao. Several memes have already gone viral over the Internet via social media aside from the accusations of cheating, unfair judging and rig/orged fight.
What is somewhat demeaning in all this chaotic aftermath is calling out to people we don't like as "gay."
"Clinching is a strategy. Outfighting is a strategy. Not all boxers are infighters. It may not be flashy, but even fighting games have zoners and nobody calls them scared or cheap or "gay". If you do then people will laugh at you and tell you to learn the game. Also, stop calling things you don't like gay. Because that means you think lowly of our homosexual brethren." says Alexei Rivera in his Facebook post.
I've learned from his post that Mayweather is an "outfighter" - when the boxer dodges more and runs around vs. infighter who runs in and exchanges blows.
True enough, "Famous Out-Boxer Muhammed Ali once said, "Float like a Butterfly, Sting like a Bee". Nobody called him scared or gay then."
He cited more facts about Ali: "Of his later career, Arthur Mercante said: "Ali knew all the tricks. He was the best fighter I ever saw in terms of clinching. Not only did he use it to rest, but he was big and strong and knew how to lean on opponents and push and shove and pull to tire them out. Ali was so smart. Most guys are just in there fighting, but Ali had a sense of everything that was happening, almost as though he was sitting at ringside analyzing the fight while he fought it."
A commenter replied "that the philly shell is the way Floyd has been brought up and lived. That's his philosophy. He gave up his youth and education to perfect that. People calling him unsportsman just because that's his way of fighting makes me sick."
Meanwhile, another Facebook friend posted on her wall:
"On a more serious note, I'd really appreciate it if people stopped calling Floyd Mayweather gay. I have family and friends who are gay. Their being gay and, where warranted, their coming out of the closet, takes so much courage—courage they must uphold every day.
It is such an insult to gay people everywhere that a man who must run from his opponent and use defensive hugging to win a boxing match instead of taking his licks as is the boxer's way is called gay. Thank you very much." says Alma Anonas-Carpio
Of which a commenter replied "Gay people should not be ridiculed. I read somewhere that men who who react negatively to gays are those who grew up with bias and are actually afraid they might someday become what they despise. To which she added, "I have several gay friends, plus the friends of my gay son and they are all very intelligent, caring and hardworking people. Better, in fact, than some egoistic machos I have met."
She hit it right on target!
