Wazzup Pilipinas Original Short Stories Series: The Window

Wazzup Pilipinas!

"Julius’s ghost talked to Andrew that night and told him how he was and gave him a talk about life and sacrifice. The next morning, Andrew asked the nurse to open the window and asked her to tell him what was happening outside. The nurse said there was nothing outside but the ruins of an old school. Andrew just smiled."
Sacrifice is sometimes the “best escape route” to problems. If you can’t let go of something, let yourself go. Nothing is permanent in this world, so it means that in time, everything will fade away.

We can see in this story that the individual (pertaining to our character named Julius) decided for himself. He sacrificed himself for the betterment of others and to give importance to life. As an individual, he elaborated his core values of being a defeated person and he gave his own light to shine in others’ darkness. He is determined by his own free will and he had a choice for himself. His individuality transcends towards the bounds of dependency which can be found in the part where he was called for surgery. He did not hesitate and he knew he made a good choice for himself.

As for Andrew, our other character, he served as a contrast for Julius. He was dependent. He was in his darkness and only receives the light from somebody. His uncapability for independence was flourishing throughout the story, so as to enhance Julius’s character (irregardless of his age).

Below is our original short story for the day.

Duman Duman! Get Some Before It’s All Gone This December at Sugarleaf Makati

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Imagine a variety of grain that is planted only in a couple of weeks in select rice paddies in only a couple towns in Pampanga then harvested as the cool breeze of the holiday months sweep the rice fields. Processing this grain is a colourful undertaking in itself–from harvesting in early dawn, to winnowing, toasting and pounding to remove the chaff. For every hectare planted with this special variety yields a mere 4.5 cavans of grain while a harvest of the normal variety of rice yields up to 300 cavans.

Due to the limited harvest quantity, which was fortunately spared by the typhoons that hit Central Luzon this year, the demand for duman is much greater than the supply. However, despite its rather steep price, those who’ve enjoyed it vouch that it is worth every grain. It may be consumed by itself, rather like breakfast cereal, or taken with steaming gatas damulag (carabao milk) or tsokolate de batirol (frothy native chocolate).

Sugarleaf Makati shares this prized delicacy in limited quantities to residents of the metropolis. Together with La Moderna’s artisan bakery products as well as other carefully selected healthyummy food and non-food products.

Raymond Kawataki Go and Jessie Mondares Back-to-Back Shows at Cevio Art House

Wazzup Pilipinas!

In his second solo show and comeback exhibition, Of Gods and Patriots, artist Raymond Katawaki Go delves into the question of power and its immanent contradictions by projecting ancient and contemporary images, of the religious and the secular in an attempt to call and respond to myth and reality. These arresting images turn into a social introspection to review the historical past and institutional ideas that are so intrinsic to intervention and inquiry but with a pulse on the present based on the artist’s understanding and impressions of these realities.

After years of hiatus, Kawataki Go comebacks with a major show at Cevio that re-registers his remarkable artistic skills and passion for art and instigation of critical thoughts.

Meanwhile for his fourth solo exhibition, Messengers, Jessie Mondares personifies his work as messengers, acting as a metaphor and as a material carrier of his intentions and ongoing aesthetic actions.    Mondares mixed media paintings have are rendered with palpable exploit on pen and ink and acrylic. His collocation of elements that are often layers of discernible--- figures and anatomical fragments of humans and animals with expanded limbs and exaggerated forms meshed with patterns, lines and o ther assigned elements and certain motifs morphing in shapes and reappearing liberally in his paintings.

Manhattan Love Story: Sony Channel’s Charming New Romantic Comedy Will Have You Smitten!

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Manhattan Love Story is a new romantic comedy based on this simple premise: The only way to maintain relationships—with lovers, spouses, family, co-workers, or friends—is to keep most of our thoughts to ourselves. Dana (Analeigh Tipton, Crazy, Stupid, Love) and Peter (Jake McDorman, Shameless) travel through the complicated terrain of modern-day relationship in this new romantic comedy.

The show has an extra dimension: the audience will hear Dana and Peter’s inner thoughts, highlighting the differences of men and women in dating and find out what they are really thinking when they say something.

Dana is from Atlanta and moves to New York to chase her dreams. When she gets a job, her colleagues started losing theirs and put the blame on her. She keeps a naive and innocent disposition despite these setbacks in high hopes that her colleagues will once again like her. She is determined to succeed in the Big Apple in both career and love.

Peter, on the other hand, is a cynical New Yorker who works for his dad at the family’s business. He has dated so many women to the point that he does not remember their names when he sees them on the street.

Immaculately Funny New Show ‘Jane the Virgin’ Premieres on Sony Channel

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Loosely adapted from a Venezuelan telenovela of the same name, Jane the Virgin is a delightful new dramedy on Sony Channel.

Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) has been convinced of two life truths owing it all to her overbearing grandmother Alba – first, that telenovelas are the highest form of entertainment; and second, that all women must protect their virginity at all costs. Now at 23, she is a driven young woman studying to become a teacher and a writer while supporting herself with a job at a new hotel in Miami.

All the years of watching telenovelas with her mother Xiomara (known as “Xo”) and her devout grandmother gave Jane a slightly unrealistic view of love – Her sexy, young-at-heart mom Xo was an unwed mother at 16 who continues to live her life as a performer at local clubs while looking for a new man. Her grandmother Alba on the other hand is a devout and prayerful lady with religion at the center of her life. Both women share a special place in Jane’s life and continue to root for her as an ambitious and compassionate woman despite their conflicting influences on Jane.

All of Jane’s meticulous life plans are turned upside down during her life-changing routine check up when she is accidentally artificially inseminated with a specimen meant for the patient in the next room. Unbeknownst to her, the specimen belongs to Rafael (Justin Baldoni), a reformed playboy and cancer survivor who is not only the new owner of the hotel where Jane works, but also a former summer crush of hers.

As a dedicated wife and mother, she ends each day at work going home to her supportive husband, Henry, and their two bright children, where “politics” and “compromise” take on new meaning.

Sony Channel’s new political drama stars Téa Leoni (Elizabeth McCord), Tim Daly (Henry McCord), Bebe Neuwirth (Nadine Tolliver), Zeljko Ivanek (Russell Jackson), Patina Miller (Daisy Grant), Erich Bergen (Blake Moran), Geoffrey Arend (Matt Mahoney), Katherine Herzer (Alison McCord), and Evan Roe (Jason McCord).

 Wazzup Pilipinas!

To continue with our lovely weekend adventure at Infinity Resort of Puerto Galera, we found ourselves surrounded with so many great choices for dishes including a full Japanese menu, with The Brae being the only restaurant in Puerto Galera that serves authentic Japanese cuisines.

However, since it was our first time at the Infinity Resort dining at The Brae, we decided to order a mix of dishes from the menus.

Your friendly neighborhood pambansang bloggers ordered a feast that would satisfy all senses, from the smell, to the presentation, the texture, and the taste - everything were simply almost perfect. You would not ask for more, except more sumptuous dishes from their fully-equipped kitchen manned by outstanding chefs.

It was already lunch time but we couldn't go splurge on a heavy meal since we were off to a tour around Puerto Galera immediately afterwards. I have to mention the zipline so I need to be light...hehehe

We've explained last time what The Brae means so we won't be repeating it here but you may refer to our previous blog post about it when we had our breakfast.

Borderless ASEAN Tourism: Making It Work For The Philippines

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Gearing up for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) economic integration in 2015, the attitude of Filipinos toward tourism has changed. There is now the willingness to learn and perform better than before.

ASEAN, comprising of Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, is improving cooperation and “borderless” travel among the 10 member-states.

The idea is to make the most of seamless travel resulting from integration and to create an “ASEAN hub” in the country.

Last September 29 at Dusit Thani Manila, many stakeholders of Tourism gathered together for the Borderless ASEAN Tourism: Making It Work For The Philippines event. It was led by no less than Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Ramon Jimenez Jr. who provided the Keynote speech, and organized by the Tourism Congress of the Philippines (TCP) led by Rosanna Tuason-Fores who gave the Welcome Remarks.

Wazzup Pilipinas!

It is a shame to keep those bright ideas hidden. Let it shine through by sharing it with the rest of the world. Join the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) and make a difference in your community.

Launched last 2013 by no less than United States President Barack Obama, it was designed to support the youth who are concerned with the economic development, environmental protection, education and civic engagement in Southeast Asia including our country the Philippines.

The YSEALI organization from the US Embassy setup a networking night a few days ago last September 30 and was held at A Space in Makati city.

They also conducted an elevator pitch slam contest that some of the attendees joined and prepared before the get-together.

An Elevator Pitch Slam is a fun place to practice your elevator pitch skills.  It is done like a poetry slam, in front of a live audience who then participate in feedback.  The best pitch has to satisfy the crowd as well as meet the standards of the judges.

CBN Asia 20th Anniversary: Continuing to Proclaim Christ and Transform Lives

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Your friendly neighborhood pambansang blogger was invited last October 7, 2014 to attend the 20th Anniversary celebration of the Christina Broadcasting Network (CBN) Asia. The event was held at the Every Nation Assembly Hall located in Bonifacio Global City.

CBN Asia brought us the endearing The 700 Club originally hosted by Pat Roberston, and the Superbook animation series which I grew up with imagining going along with the trips to the Bible stories hanging out with Gizmo.

I can say that both shows were a great influence for me since we often watch them during those times they originally aired on GMA 7. I can still remember my parents, and grandparents, tuning in to The 700 Club, and my brothers and I were always looking forward to every episode of the Superbook. Now, that the cartoon has evolved into a 3D "reimagined" version, we still continue to find joy in reminiscing the memorable childhood days.

UFS Culinary Festival 2014: Sharing Food and Restaurant Tips and Trends

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Food entrepreneurs composed of chefs, culinary experts and businessmen running restaurants, food kiosks or stalls, teaching in schools, participating in food markets, have their own buildings, or situated in malls, shared their insights on what are currently trending in the food industry.

The event started with the hosting of Luanne Dy, an Unang Hirit co-host, and the welcome remarks of Colin Butler, Managing Director of Unilever Food Solutions. Followed by RJ Ledesma as first speaker of the day who talked about the Mercator Centrale Food Market and what are currently trending in the restaurant or food industry. Executive Chef Robby Goco of the famous Cyma restaurant was second speaker who also talked about Food Trends.

RJ Ledesma used a presentation acquired from Anton Diaz's food blog which says that we need to be able to distinguish a trend from a fad and that the current trends nowadays are slow but healthy foods like organic food restaurants, white linens are out and casual fine dining is in, restaurants are now of hipster design, unconventional location but surprisingly yummy foods, Filipino dishes are in composed of Filipino ingredients, flavors and artists, and street food markets are in.

Chef Robby Goco says food trends are like fashion trends because they come and go and speak of the times. When not in current style, food appears dated, unappealing and not so fresh.Good examples are the ramen, burgers, the cronuts, and the brookies which are like the bell bottoms and loom bands which are more like a fad. Breakfast are still in demand but on the healthier side, and that food trucks never caught on in the country because of licensing issues.

KL Tower Serviced Residences: A Special Family Weekend Staycation

Wazzup Pilipinas!

It's very rare that our entire family could spend so much time together. Usually it would just be dining out or watching a special blocked screening of a movie. We are therefore very grateful to have an opportunity to experience a family staycation to give us more time for some much-needed family bonding.

But due to the hectic work schedules waiting for us come weekdays, we cannot afford to travel long distances just to find an accommodation suited for a few days of temporary respite from work and, in the case of our children, study. What we need is a quality and soothing place that will still allow us to relax while still able to easily go back to our daily routines afterwards.

Just a few blocks away from the Greenbelt Mall is KL Tower Serviced Residences, our chosen home for the weekend. Located in Makati’s business district of Legaspi Village,  it is the ideal location to keep closely in touch with everything else in Metro Manila. Makati is very accessible to anything you'll need since you'll find almost everything within just a few walks to its malls that literally side-by-side with each other.
