Makalanyog Festival Celebrated at Lipa, Batangas

Lipa City of Batangas is celebrating for the very first time its "Makalanyog Festival". Makalanyog pays tribute to their St. Sebastian, their patron saint, and to showcase Lipa City's prime agricultural products or crops where the name of the festival was derived namely "mais" (corn), "kape" (coffee and cacao), lanzones, and niyog (coconut)./...thus MaKaLanYog was born!

The "Makalanyog Festival” is the celebration of the Lipeños' way of life, a thanksgiving for the city’s abundant harvest, and the Lipeños' way of promoting the preservation and conservation of the city’s environment.


This year's theme of the newest grand fiesta of the Lipenos is “Patrong San Sebastian, Gabay at Pag-asa sa Patuloy na Kaunlaran” and is being held from January 11 to 20.

The ten day merriment composed of religious activities and night parties is really something to look forward to every year.

List of Activities for the Makalanyog Festival

Novena Mass ( Jan. 11, 2014) : A series of novena prayers for nine (9) straight days in honor of Lipa City’s Patron Saint, San Sebastian at the San Sebastian Cathedral. Novena Mass will start from Jan. 11, 2014 – Jan. 19, 2014 at 4:30 pm.

Ginebra Night “Rock Lipa” (Jan. 11,2014) : A night for “battle of the bands” to be participated by various rock bands from Lipa City as well as from the province of Batangas. Aside from the competition, a Professional Guest Band will perform to make the night even more exciting. Liquor selling such as Ginebra products is expected during the event.

“Isang Libong Bata, Isang Libong Tuwa”(Jan. 13, 2014) : An annual activity spearheaded by Vice Mayor Eric B. Africa & BM Rowena Sombrano Africa in coordination with Mayor Meynard A. Sabili and the Fiesta Executive Committee. A fun half-day activity with mascot appearances, exciting games, foods and gifts mainly for a thousand indigent children of the city.

Street Dancing Competition (Jan. 14, 2014) : The street dancing shall be composed of two categories: the Dance Showdown and Street Dancing. The competition is open to all high school, college & barangay residents of Lipa and shall be made up of a minimum of 50 and a maximum of 70 dancers, 20 instrumentalists, and 20 propsmen. The concept piece of each group must incorporate nature crops found in the city such as corn, coconut, lanzones, cacao, and coffee as part of the theme. Likewise, it must depict the historical story and origins of the city.

“Ka Boses Ko Si Idol” (Jan. 14, 2014) : A singing contest in which participants will imitate the voice and even the gestures of famous singers of their choice (celebrity idol). The competition is open only to Lipeños, from all age groups. Audition starts from Nov. 4, 2013 and lasts till Dec. 6, 2013 at the Youth Development Division, CCAO. The Grand Finals Night will be on Jan. 14, 2014 at the Lipa Plaza Independencia.

“FUZION” (Jan. 15, 2014) : A cultural night highlighted by recognized performing artists of Lipa City and Batangas province. The main aim of the show is to showcase music, dance, and songs that can be fused, mixed, or combined into one production performance of homegrown talent that have already made their mark on the national and international scene.

“Mautak Ako Showdown, Year II” (Jan. 16, 2014) : A quiz bee whose participants will be coming from the city's various high school and college students of public and private schools. The quiz bee will focus mainly on Lipa's history and general information and trivia about the city. Its objective is to encourage the youth to study and eventually familiarize themselves with Lipa's heritage, as well as to promote good fellowship among private and public schools.

Runway Fashion & Beauty Year III (Jan. 16, 2014) : Showcases the fashion works of some of the best local couturiers, designers, and makeup artists. The artists behind the wonderful makeup and dress creations and their models will come from LIpa and Batangas.

Lipa Queen of Charity 2014 Coronation Night (Jan. 17, 2014) : A special formal event at the Plaza Independencia in which one out of eleven candidates will be crowned as the Lipa Queen of Charity 2014. A fundraising activity for the good causes of the M.A. Sabili Foundation Inc., with Madam Bernadette P. Sabili being the organization's able president. Proceeds of the search will be for the benefit of the less privileged individuals in the city. The eleven candidates will be formally presented to the public as the generous and lovely ambassadors of goodwill thru the said foundation.

ABS CBN Kapamilya Karavan (Jan. 20, 2014) : Prime "Kapamilya" stars of ABS-CBN will be visiting Lipa City for an entertainment show at the Lipa Plaza Independencia, making this event one of the crowd favorites.

10th Roadrunner 117 Moto-Racing Invitational Cup (Jan. 18, 2014): An annual activity of the Roadrunners 117 (Motorbikers Club of Lipa), a local NGO which has been very active in various civil, religious, and social activities in the city. Already on its 10th edition, this year’s theme is "Motorbikers Protection & Safety in Sports 2014.” The motorcycle and scooter racing will be held along Leviste Drive, Brgy. Inosluban and Brgy. Plaridel, Lipa City, and aims to promote responsible driving among motorcycle owners, as well as to promote the local tourism. Hundreds of motorcycle aficionados from the CALABARZON area, Bulacan, and Metro Manila are expected to participate. Part of the proceeds will be used to procure items and materials for chosen beneficiaries who have stakes in the education and training of motorcyclists, in the maintenance of peace and order, and in regulating the daily traffic in the city.

Mutya ng Lipa 2014 Coronation Night (Jan. 19, 2014): One of the main events for Fiesta 2014 will witness the crowning of a new Mutya and the gathering of Lipa’s most important people. After the coronation, special invited guests will dance the Rigodon de Honor in the Grand Ball.

Car Show (Jan. 19, 2014) : This one-night event along Ayala Highway is a public exhibition of various automobile models. Car companies and private individuals (such as car owners and aficionados) alike are expected to flock to the event as exhibitors and spectators. The occasion will feature different hybrid and concept cars, including state-of-the-art auto parts. The event's goal is mainly to gather all automotive enthusiasts for the benefit of charity, as well as to share information regarding car club gatherings.

Grand Parade (Jan. 20, 2014) : A parade of amazing floats by various local establishments in Lipa, with the participation of city officials headed by the Hon. Mayor Meynard A. Sabili, members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod headed by Vice Mayor Eric B. Africa, barangay officials, various non-government organizations, school universities, the newly crowned Mutya ng Lipa 2014, the Lipa Queen of Charity 2014, and the winners from various competitions held during the fiesta. The parade will start at the parking area of SM City Lipa and will proceed to Sabang before ending at C.M. Recto Avenue. Spectators can expect a big number of street dancers to enliven the parade.

San Miguel Night (Jan. 20, 2014) : A night of rock music at the Lipa Plaza Independencia from different local rock bands, with the special performance of guest band artist. Expect an overflowing of San Miguel beer products, and, to make the night even more special, the surprise appearance of a guess artist sponsored by San Migue.

Concelebrated Mass (Jan. 20, 2014): A religious gathering of Lipeños from all walks of life at the Lipa Cathedral. A concelebrated Mass in honor of the city's patron saint, San Sebastian will be officiated by Archbishop Ramon C. Arguelles and all the Parish Priests in Lipa.

Procession (Jan. 20, 2014) : The concelebrated Mass will be followed by a procession of religious images and replica within the city, after which, a grand fireworks display will triumphantly close the celebration.
