DIY Sunscreen Saves Your Skin And Your Budget

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Are you looking for a way to enjoy the summer sun without the harsh chemicals and smelly ingredients in sunscreen? We all know that the sun's damaging effects are even worse throughout the intense heat of the summer. But sticky, smelling, and sometimes harmful sunscreens can make us hesitant to reapply. According to EQG.org, the chemical, oxybenzone, found in about 80% of store bought sunscreens is dangerous because it can penetrate skin, causing allergic reactions or even hormone changes.

What few people know is that many natural oils can offer protection from the potent sun. According to organicauthority.com, many common oils such as coconut oil, sesame oil, and olive oil are natural low SPF sunblocks with a pleasant aroma. Some lesser used oils, such as raspberry seed oil, carrot seed oil, and wheat germ oil offer up to SPF 50.

With this safe and easy DIY recipe created by the experts at Skana spa of the New York resort Turning Stone, you can make your own sunblock that beats the heat while still protecting your skin and your wallet.

To make this recipe you'll need:

1 ounce red raspberry seed oil
1 ounce coconut oil
1 ounce beeswax (Tip: buy a pure beeswax candle and grate it using a common cheese grater to be more budget friendly)
5-10 drops of your favorite essential oil (optional)

Combine ingredients in a hot water bath. To make a hot water bath, place a glass bowl inside of a pot on the stove. Put only a little water in the pot and bring it up to medium-high heat slowly. You want to melt the ingredients, stirring often, inside the glass container. Do this slowly so it doesn't scorch.

When melted, place glass container somewhere cool or in the refrigerator. When mixture is cool to the touch it's ready to use!

This natural, safe, DIY sunscreen can be used to protect against the sun on nature's hottest days without the threat of allergic reactions or harsh chemicals. What's fun about this recipe is that you can play around with the essential oils to find an aroma that makes you want to wear your sunscreen. Best part is, this sunscreen offers you waterproof protection, so your day in the sun can be long-lasting fun.
