How to Care and Decorate with Poinsettias This Christmas

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The weather is cold, and we can hear the lovely music of our beloved holiday icon, Jose Marie Chan, partnered with a couple of holiday-themed memes. These are the telltale signs that the Philippines are now in the middle of preparing for the holidays. Everyone is getting their Christmas decorations out. And of course, who can forget about the seasonal beauty that is the poinsettia?

Poinsettia: The Christmas Star

The poinsettia is known for its bright red and green colors, which makes it the best plant to decorate with during the holidays. Though it is a flowering plant, don’t mistake its colorful leaves for petals. Its flowers are the yellow parts of the plant. It’s very tiny and takes on a berry-like appearance.

This lovely houseplant is a native to Mexico. It is also where the flower’s association with Christmas is first known.

The story starts with a poor child that didn’t have any means to buy a grand gift to the Christ Child. She was upset that her family did not have anything prepared for Him. However, she quickly learned that any gift is beautiful as it is given. So she gathered an armful of green weeds and offers it as a gift. A miracle had happened, and all the green weeds had transformed into what is known as the poinsettia today.

Decoration Ideas

Poinsettia is the definite go-to plant when you want to decorate your home with the holidays. Here are a few design ideas that you can do with your poinsettia plants:

Check Out Varying Types of Poinsettia

Classic red poinsettias will always be a top seller in the market. However, if you’re thinking about upping your game with your decorating, try to explore different poinsettia in the market. Poinsettias can come in different shades of red, white, pink, and coral colors.

Feel free to mix and match color combinations and variegation. It will all depend on your taste and style. A classic combination is white poinsettias with red as accents. For something a little more fun and youthful, try combining an ice punch poinsettia with a beautiful pink poinsettia.

A Christmas Tree of Poinsettia

If you happen to walk around public areas, you might find one of these beautiful poinsettia displays arranged like a tree. If you’d like to change up your Christmas decorations this year, why not re-create a small one in your very own home?

You can try this by getting tree-shaped shelvings. Or if you'd like something a little smaller, you can try this will small 3 to 4 ladder type shelves.

Poinsettia By The Window Sill

These plants love a lot of bright light so putting them on the windowsill is one of the best ways to decorate with poinsettias. When placing your plants in your window, try to keep in mind the rule of odds. Place around three or five poinsettias right by your windowsill. Add a few green garlands and decorate to your heart’s content.

If you would prefer, you can invest in a rectangular planter and plant a few poinsettias there. For an added effect, combine different variegations for added variety to your arrangement. Also, make sure that no part of the plant is touching a cold windowpane. That may lead to injury on the plant.

Hanging Poinsettias

Do you have a flair for the dramatic? Try planting your poinsettias in hanging baskets and put them in the empty corner of your home. This is sure to liven up those dead spaces and fill it with holiday cheer. It's also a great way to save on floor space and make the room look spacious. To give it a bit of pizazz, use a combination of white and red poinsettias.

Use the Best Pots

A plant's container is just as important as the plant itself. Play around with your pots and see what works best for your poinsettia. You can choose from a range of beautiful white ceramics or something as down to earth as a decorative basket pot. Choose something that would look best for your chosen theme this holiday season.

A gold-colored pot is perfect for a warmer color scheme. Pair this with a classic red poinsettia. If you want to go for a cooler tone, go with a silver-colored pot paired with white poinsettias.

Poinsettia Care Tips

Now, even though they’re considered decorative plants, these flowering plants can be a bit tricky when it comes to caring for it. If you want them to survive all through and beyond the holidays, make sure to take note of these tips:

Give It Enough Light

Poinsettias enjoy being under the sun! Make sure to keep them near a window where there's a lot of light. According to Philstar Global, placing the plant under low light will result in the shedding of lower leaves. If there’s not enough light coming through your home, you can make up for it with soft grow lights.

Careful with The Watering

Now poinsettias are considered sub-tropical plants. This means that they prefer to keep their soil moist and not wet. What you want to do is to water it runs out the drainage hole. Allow the pot to drain out its excess water. To help maintain its moisture, you might want to pot your poinsettias in non-porous containers like fiberglass pots. I recommend these sorts of planters because they're known to be durable and lightweight.

Do NOT feed a poinsettia in bloom as it may do some damage to its roots. If your poinsettia was recently repotted or newly bought, the soil will have enough nutrients to sustain them through Christmas.

Temperature Management is Key

Avoid placing your poinsettias in an air-conditioned area. You’ll want to maintain the temperature at 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. This is crucial for them to maintain their blooming.

Caution: Poinsettia’s Toxicity

Contrary to popular belief, no known evidence points to poinsettias being poisonous. However, according to WebMD, that doesn't mean that they're harmless. If a child eats enough poinsettia leaves, he might become nauseated and may vomit.

It's not lethal enough to kill your child or your pet.  It's always better to keep these beauties out of reach to avoid any accidents. Teach your kids and train your pets to stay away from the plant.

You're Fired, Donald Trump!

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Sacha Baron Cohen has a message for Donald Trump following Joe Biden's victory: "Donald—you’re out of work and I know I offered you a job. But your performance this past week was tragic and sad. Offer rescinded."

Four years ago, Hillary Clinton told us how this would go. Give it up, Donald. Nothing was rigged. You're fired!

Go cry in jail, you racist, homophobic, sexist, disabled mocking, tax dodging, lying, white supremacy supporting, false information spreading, bleach injecting, fat orange twat.

Outside the White House, someone in a crowd of pro-Joe Biden supporters waves a sign reading "You're Fired!" directed at President Trump.

How wonderful is it to see the White House on with so many Patriots celebrating in front of a big “YOU’RE FIRED” sign on the gate? Love it so damn much.

After Pennsylvania became the state to clinch the election, Joe Biden's supporters in the Democratic stronghold of Philadelphia poured into the street with signs reading "The People Have Spoken," "Thank Youse" and "Philly Says: Donald Trump, You're Fired."

That’s what happens when you tell over half the country they’re garbage and you refuse to represent the entire country. They take what should have been an honor and privilege afforded few people away.

"Stood up against a slightly elder chap,

had a #TrumpTantrum and flung much crap,

with many a tweet saying others lied,

Even twitter got involved with tweet denied,

finally this reign has almost expired,

US have spoke - Donald Trump you're fired."

#ByeByeTrump. Goodbye, man. YOU'RE FIRED even though you say you won this election by a lot.

"YOU'RE FIRED"

Don't let the incomplete wall hit your fat ass on the way out.

The American people, 75,000,000 and counting, have said "You’re fired." And have given Trump a kick in the ass to the curb!

Trump is a child. Joe Biden swept that wee victory of him under the rug. Biden got the HIGHEST popular vote in the history of presidency.

Biden got well over 74 million popular votes! 290 electoral votes. He won. I know Trump doesn’t have big boy pants to put on and accept this- but, it’s true. He lost. He better get his racist, narcissistic, lyin ass packin! He is FIRED! America chose democracy over fascism!

After Trump is done crying, it will be proven. He has NO evidence, as usual.

YOU’RE FIRED, LOSER!!! Your reign of terror is quickly coming to an end and America is rejoicing! For everyone you’ve caused harm to, we reject your hate, your lies, your bigotry, your racism, your bigotry, your arrogance and narcissism. Pack your shit and GTFOH!

Please just leave the White House quickly and quietly. No need for histrionics.

America has spoken, you're out. DONALD TRUMP, YOU'RE FIRED!!!

Mayor Vico Sotto of Pasig city is making his mother proud

Wazzup Pilipinas!

"Laging tandaan na wala kayong utang na loob kahit kanino (lalo na sa politiko) dahil pera ito ng taumbayan. Na-a-appreciate ko naman kapag may nagpapasalamat sa kin pero naiilang ako dahil di ko pera to.

Mag-aral lang kayo nang mabuti, sulit na ang investment ng Pasig sa inyo."

Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto tells students that they should not thank him for their scholarship because it was the people’s money that funds their education.

Intellectuals know that ever since, but there are still too many who believe they owe a lot to these politicians who are simply managing taxpayers money.

We've always elected politicians who act like we owe them everything, that this idea actually seems absurd.

It feels good to finally hear it from a politician. Louder po Mayor Vico.

Flex ko lang Mayor namin because why not? He is an EPITOME OF GOOD GOVERNANCE.

I'm hating the government right now because of the corruption and incompetencies of the current administration, but I'm also crying because Mayor Vico makes me believe there's still hope and future for good governance.

Mayor Vico always hit the bull's eye. We should not feel indebted. Politicians should be. He has the right thinking that all politicians and government officials should emulate.

Pasig is so blessed. Pasigueños must have done something right to deserve Mayor Vico.

Actually, we are not blessed. We voted right by not being fanatics. Remember who Mayor Vico was running against. If we remained loyal rather than intelligent, malamang baka ganoon pa rin ang Pasig until now.

With leadership of Mayor Vico, Pasig's future is brighter than the Philippines. If he didn't run in the first place, Pasig would still be Pasig ran by the Eusebio clan. More than two decades of Eusebio was more than.enough. There should be a law about this but most of our politicians have made politics a business venture.

This is how we end political patronage. There's still hope for the Philippine politics with leaders like Mayor Vico. Good citizens + good public servants with good policies = better country.

I badly wish all politicians are like Mayor Vico. I know he's only rightfully doing his job but this man has proven time and time again that he cares for the people he's leading, unlike other power-hungry (too many to mention) government officials.

Mayor Vico is someone na hindi inuuna yung ego or nakikipagpataasan sa ibang politicians. He doesn’t care about those things. What he really cares about is doing his job which is to serve people.

Mayor Vico is truly making his mother proud.

Napaka swerte rin ng future wife and kids ni Mayor Vico. For he is such a responsible, kind, caring and genuinely humble person.

This is the kind of leader that we all need. Mayor Vico Sotto, please hawaan mo lahat sila. Very competent mayor.

If only Digong is half as humble as Mayor Vico.

Mayor Vico for president. Age should not be restricted when running for president. Sadly, only a handful has this type of mentality among our politicians.

Remember when a group of DDS, tried to destroy a student life just because he was grateful for our country men? LAKING SAMPAL sa mukha siguro ng statement ni Mayor Vico no?

How ironic that these DDS are siding to both politician with a completely different political views.

We really need to fix people’s mindset that government projects are funded by the people, not the officials.

It’s the official’s job to place where to prioritize that funding and we should hold them accountable for it because it is OUR money, not theirs.

Kudos to Mayor Vico!
