FRIED WITH PRIDE: Everyone has a seat at the table with KFC

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

KFC Thailand loaded its buckets with three important ingredients at the "Proud To Be Pride Parade 2023": Love, Respect and Equal Opportunity. A trio of deep-fried values that've been coming in hot for KFC fans since 1952 - and this year's rainbowed streets of CentralWorld Square, were no exception.

A pride parade unlike any other, "Proud To Be Pride" lit up Bangkok as a love fest spectacular on 1 June.

Presented by Muse by Metinee x CentralWorld x The United Nations Development Programme, this was one gathering of minds that certainly needed no introduction. KFC Thailand was front and centre, with its Pride placard quoting the Colonel's very first testimony from back in the day: 'Everyone gets a seat at the table.' And this year, everyone did. The Colonel's 2023 Thai team bucketed forth and joined hearts with their pledge for diversity, inclusion, and equality, specifically in the workplace. KFC took to the bright-striped avenues with life-size recruitment buckets, in support of equal opportunities for all.

Spectators, marchers and even musicians were embraced and ushered by zealous KFC-stars to the KFC Walk-In Recruitment Buckets - where the table was duly laid with the freedom to be your best self, no matter what. Everyone was invited to step in and apply for some of the hottest KFC job vacancies this side of the menu. This was undoubtedly a proud moment for the KFC squad.

"At KFC Thailand, we're not just about chicken; we're about people - and encouraging people to bring their best selves to the party," says Sakechai Choomuenwai, General Manager of KFC Thailand. "We're an inclusive organization that goes above and beyond to cultivate a workplace where human values like Love, Respect and Pride are always dished up first."

With its zero-discrimination policy, and an all-time customer promise to serve its patrons with friendship, KFC Thailand makes no bones about its uncapped celebration of LGBTQ+ rights, applying the essence of diversity and equality to every touchpoint in and outside of its business. For KFC, Pride is not only reserved for the month of June, but rather, "Pride is a way of service and a way of life," adds Choomuenwai, "and so too is individualism. If we can continue to provide an environment where our team members feel safe and comfortable to openly express themselves, then we're doing our jobs, and we're doing them well."

By affording equal and fair career opportunities, KFC Thailand continues to stand strong against the backdrop of diversity and inclusion and holds true to its deeply-ingrained wishbone: to nourish a nation of dreamers, doers and achievers - and to do it with a whole lot of zing!

From Sea to Sky: UPD-CS scientists feted for pioneering research

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

From the deepest stretches of the ocean to the farthest reaches of the sky, Filipino scientists are adding to humanity’s collective knowledge of the world. Their efforts have not gone unsung, as recent explorations by University of the Philippines-Diliman College of Science (UPD-CS) researchers have earned acclaim from both national and international scientific and award-giving bodies.

The University of the Philippines - Diliman College of Science (UPD-CS) is one of the country’s premiere research and teaching institutions. In 2023, its outstanding researchers were honored locally and abroad by the NAST and Asian Scientist Magazine. (Photo credit: Nadine Lim, UP Photography Society)

The Philippine National Academy of Science and Technology-Philippines (NAST) recently recognized six members of the UPD-CS community: two were named Academician; two were recognized as outstanding young scientists (OYS); and one won the grand prize in the 2023 NAST Talent Search for Young Scientists (NTSYS). Meanwhile an additional four UPD-CS researchers were highlighted in this year’s edition of the prestigious Asian Scientist 100.

New Academicians

The NAST is the Philippines’ highest scientific advisory and recognition body; its distinguished members are selected exclusively by the Academy itself and conferred the title, “Academician.” Gil S. Jacinto, PhD, of the UPD-CS Marine Science Institute (UPD-CS MSI) and Maria Corazon A. de Ungria, PhD, of the UPD-CS Natural Sciences Research Institute (UPD-CS NSRI), were recently inducted as Academicians for their respective work in marine chemistry and forensic DNA technology.

Jacinto’s research interests are in nutrient and trace elements in tropical marine environments, marine pollution chemistry, submarine groundwater discharge, hypoxia, and seawater carbonate chemistry. He was MSI director from 2000 to 2006 and established the Marine Chemistry and Pollution Laboratory at the MSI, the first chemical oceanography laboratory in the Philippines.

Meanwhile, De Ungria is known for her research in human population genetics and forensic DNA technology, which are invaluable tools for human identification in criminal investigation, disaster victim identification, and resolving parentage disputes. She provided technical assistance in drafting the Supreme Court Rule on DNA evidence, which was approved in 2007 and has since been used nationwide by the Philippine judicial system in handling sexual assault cases. She is the director of the Program on Biodiversity, Ethnicity, and Forensics at the Philippine Genome Center and concurrently heads the DNA Laboratory of the NSRI.

Outstanding Young Scientists

The NAST OYS award is given annually to Filipino scientists aged 41 and below who have made significant contributions to science and technology and have been published in reputable scientific journals.

Jillian Aira S. Gabo-Ratio, DEng, of the UPD-CS National Institute of Geological Sciences (UPD-CS NIGS), and Reinabelle C. Reyes, PhD, of the UPD-CS National Institute of Physics (UPD-CS NIP) were recognized as this year’s OYS in the field of earth resources engineering, and astrophysics, respectively.

Gabo-Ratio is an associate professor at NIGS, and is the institute’s officer-in-charge-deputy director for academic affairs. Her research interests are in economic geology, igneous and sedimentary geochemistry, geophysics, and tectonics. A topnotcher in the 2006 Geology Licensure Examination, Gabo-Ratio is a recipient of the UP Alumni of Michigan Centennial Professorial Chair (2021), One UP Faculty Grant (2019-2021), UPD Centennial Faculty Grant (2017-2021), and the UP System International Publication Award (2017-2022).

Reyes, an associate professor at the NIP, made worldwide headlines in 2010 with her paper, "Confirmation of General Relativity on Large Scales from Weak Lensing and Galaxy Velocities which confirmed Albert Einstein’s Theory," which was published in the high-profile journal, Nature. In 2020, she established the NIP Data and Computation Research Group, which is focused on data-driven astrophysics and computational physics.

NTSYS Grand Prize

Cosme, an associate professor at the NIP, is a theoretical physicist specializing in condensed matter. His paper, "Observation of a Continuous Time Crystal" clinched the grand prize at this year’s NTSYS. He also headed a recent study of dark matter, which resulted in a Nature Materials paper entitled, “Condensate Formation in a Dark State of a Driven Atom-Cavity System.”

Asian Scientist 100

Meanwhile, Singapore's Asian Scientist Magazine recently released the latest edition of its annual "Asian Scientist 100" list that fetes the region's best and brightest researchers, touted as “Asia’s science superstars.” In the 2023 list are four scientists from UPD-CS: Pia D. Bagamasbad, PhD, from the UPD-CS National Institute for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (UPD-CS NIMBB); Aletta T. Yñiguez, PhD, of the UPD-CS MSI; and Allan Gil S. Fernando, PhD, and Mario Juan A. Aurelio, PhD, of UPD-CS NIGS.

Both Bagamasbad and Yñiguez were Philippine Outstanding Women in the Nation’s Service (TOWNS) awardees in 2022, for respectively spearheading an RT-PCR training program for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in support of the country's COVID-19 response, and for developing and advocating sustainable fishing practices among local communities. In the same year, Fernando was awarded the National Research Council of the Philippines’ Achievement Award in recognition of his contributions to earth and space science. For his part, Aurelio's contributions to structural geology and geodynamics education earned him the 2022 Gregorio Y. Zara Award for Basic Research from the Philippine Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology (PhilAAST).

P-BBM receives the commemorative Independence Day

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

PHLPost Stamps from Postmaster General Carlos

Postmaster General Luis D. Carlos presented the commemorative Stamp Frame to His Excellency President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. at the 125th Anniversary celebration of Philippine Independence Day held at Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park Manila.

The 125th Philippine Independence Day Stamp feature’s two important moments in our history: The Sewing of the Philippine Flag by Marcela and Lorenza Agoncillo, and Delfina Herbosa Natividad in Hong Kong, and when Aguinaldo proclaimed Philippine Independence with the very same flag proudly raised at the Aguinaldo residence (now Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine) during the Declaration of Philippine Independence in Kawit, Cavite, on June 12, 1898.

The official logo for the 125th Anniversary of Philippine Independence and Nationhood appears on the official first day cover.

Starting June 13, 2023, PHLPost will start selling the stamps to the public at SM Manila Postal Counter in support of the commemoration of the 125th Anniversary of Philippine Independence and Nationhood.

PHLPost has been at the forefront in the protection, preservation and conservation of history and culture through the issuance of postage stamps that have been widely recognized here and abroad. The beauty, uniqueness and special significance of commemorative stamps, continue to be a source of fascination and of great value to collectors.

Even during these difficult times, postage stamps continue to be the source of inspiration, courage and patriotism among Filipinos

“As we commemorate the sacrifices and triumphs of our forebears, In the face of adversity, our people at PHLPost will rise from the ashes and become resilient and strong”, said Postmaster General Luis D. Carlos.

The historic Manila Central Post Office Building was recently destroyed by fire leaving its documents and equipment burned to the ground. “We are saddened by this unfortunate incident, but we are lucky to have salvaged some important stamps. We are now in the process of retrieving valuable and historic items placed in our stamp vault which were left unharmed during the fire”, PMG Carlos said.

On June 12, 2023, the country marked 125 years since Philippine Independence was proclaimed in Kawit, Cavite. This year’s Independence Day carries the theme:, “Kalayaan, Kinabukasan at Kasaysayan.” (Freedom, Future and History.)

PHLPost has printed 40,000 copies sold at P16 each of the two different designs of the stamps. PHLPost in-house graphic artist Israel Viyo layout the historic stamps.

Stamps and official first-day covers are available starting June 13, near the 4th Floor of SM City Manila Postal Counter located at Conception Street Corner San Marcelino or visit https://www.facebook.com/PilipinasPhilately/ for updates.

Climate Disasters may hurt children, 5.6M poor families

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Save the Children Philippines is deeply concerned for the safety and welfare of children from 5.6 million poor families who are exposed to various risks and hazards from disasters and emergencies as the country braces for 15 cyclones this year. With the Philippines ranking first in the 2022 World Risk Index with the highest risk of disasters in the world, families living in poverty have less protection from the impacts of climate disasters and have less support and resources to adapt to climate-related change.

During climate emergencies, affected families may find it hard to send their children to school or even access healthcare. Children suffer the most as many of them will be forced to work to help their family’s daily needs. Filipino girls are at greater risk of being abused, neglected, exploited, and/or subjected to child marriage.

“No child deserves to grow up in poverty. But the reality is grim. Millions of Filipino children remain poor due to inequality and discrimination where many of them lack access to basic services on health, education, proper nutrition, or adequate housing. Hence, our work for and with children focuses on building children and families’ resilience from the negative impacts of the climate and inequality crises,” said Save the Children Philippines CEO Atty. Albert Muyot.

Save the Children Philippines’ child-led “Generation Hope Campaign” is calling for urgent action from the government and concerned sectors to create a safer, fairer, and healthy environment for children.

"We demand child-centered climate change mitigation and adaptation plans. Let us save the planet to save the children," said Jan, 17, a Generation Hope youth advocate.

In celebration of World Environment Day, Generation Hope advocates in Save the Children’s Eastern Samar program area held a symbolic paper boat activity where they sent letters demanding local and national leaders to implement and adopt environmental policies.

In partnership with the Department of Education, Save the Children Philippines also deployed a holistic Disaster Risk Reduction Management Information System which implements a comprehensive school safety ecosystem in the country. The system safeguards schools and the community, ensuring learning continuity during disasters or other emergencies.

“Without urgent and concrete actions to mitigate the negative impact of climate change and support for the most vulnerable families to adapt, we are at a setback in fulfilling children’s right to survive, learn, be protected, and thrive,” said Environmental Health Advisor Rexel Abrigo.

Support Save the Children Philippines’ work for and with children. Build a Generation of Hope by being a Life Changer for Children!
