PPA, PCG Provide Swift Assistance After Mindanao Quake

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Following the magnitude 6.5 earthquake that hit several parts of Mindanao this morning, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), both attached agencies of the Department of Transportation (DOTr), immediately mobilized to aid affected citizens.

DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade directed the PPA and PCG to exhaust all efforts in providing the necessary help and support to local and provincial governments.

“Sa loob ng isang linggo, dalawang lindol ang nagdaan sa Mindanao. Sa panahong ito, tayo ay magkaisa at magkapit-bisig upang matulungan ang ating mga kababayan. Gawin natin ang lahat ng ating makakaya na maihatid ang anumang tulong na kailangan ng publiko,” Secretary Tugade stressed.

Shortly after the transportation chief’s directive, PPA General Manager Jay Santiago instructed all Project Management Offices (PMOs) in affected areas to properly coordinate with the local Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Local Government Units (LGUs), and local Disaster Risk Reduction Management Offices (DRRMOs) on how they can offer assistance in disaster management efforts.

“We are ready to provide assistance to affected areas. PPA is ready to help in whatever way we can. We are one with government, in prayer and in action, to restore immediately what has been damaged by the quake,” he said.

GM Santiago also ordered PMOs to send bottled water and non-perishable food to evacuation areas, provide additional port personnel, and reallocate available Malasakit supplies for the aid of earthquake victims.

Additionally, GM Santiago directed to prioritize cargoes and personnel that are intended for rescue and disaster management efforts.

For the PCG’s part, Coast Guard Commandant Vice Admiral Joel Garcia initiated the deployment of all PCG assets available to affected areas in Davao City, Davao del Sur, and Cotabato.

Upon Secretary Tugade’s instructions, Commandant Garcia ordered the deployment of all PCG K-9 search and rescue dogs to assist in the lookout for possible missing persons affected by the earthquake. Likewise, all Coast Guard units in Mindanao were instructed to deploy half of their personnel and all transport vehicles and ambulances to augment rescue operations.

Doctors and nurses from the PCG and PCG Auxiliary were also tapped to deliver medical assistance to injured victims.

To show their utmost support, Garcia announced that Coast Guard vessels will be on standby to aid in the shipment of relief goods and other form of assistance from non-government organizations and the private sector to help affected victims.

"PCG vessels were deployed nationwide to help in the shipment of relief goods and other form of assistance from non-government organizations and private sectors as soon as possible in order to augment the needs of the victims,” Garcia stated.

Furthermore, a PCG Islander 251 wing plane with K-9 units and 500 handheld radios onboard will be deployed tomorrow to enhance search and rescue operations all over Mindanao.

Instituto Cervantes’ PELÍCULA Spanish Film Festival concludes in Iloilo

Wazzup Pilipinas!

From November 7 to 9, Instituto Cervantes will be holding the final leg of the PELÍCULA Spanish Film Festival, now on its 18th edition, at the Cinematheque Center in Iloilo City. A selection of films from the Festival will be screened in their original Spanish version with subtitles in English. Tickets are free of charge.

The Festival will kick off on November 7, at 6:30pm, with the Argentinean black comedy El cuento de las comadrejas (The Weasels’ Tale), which won the “Premio del Público / Audience Choice Award” of PELICULA 2019. Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Juan José Campanella, this movie is about a famous actress, an actor, a film director and screenplay writer who were popular during the Golden Age of Cinema, doing the impossible to preserve the world they created.

On November 8, at 6:30pm, the Festival will continue with another comedy, Mi obra maestra (Gastón Duprat, 2018). The film is about two friends with very different personalities: Arturo, a charming and unscrupulous art dealer, and Renzo, a sullen painter whose fame has declined. Arturo tries to relaunch the artistic career of his friend, but things get from bad to worse, until they come up with an extremely ludicrous plan. The movie got the Audience Award at the Valladolid International Film Festival in 2018.

On November 9, at 4:00pm, the popular Spanish comedy El mejor verano de mi vida (Dani de la Orden, 2018) will be screened. Curro, an unlucky salesman burdened with debt, tries to fulfill his promise to his son to go on an unforgettable summer holiday.

Finally, the Festival will close with the drama El reino (Rodrigo Sorogoyen, 2018) at 6:30 PM. A film that has received more than 30 awards worldwide, the story shows a very interesting insight into contemporary politics and corruption. It is about a Spanish politician who enjoys the good life, while enriching himself with public funds. When a friend and fellow member of his political party gets accused of corruption, he tries to cover up for him, against the directives of the leaders of his party.

Presented by Instituto Cervantes, the Embassy of Spain, AECID, the UP Film Institute, UPFI Film Center, TurEspaña, and the Film Development Council of the Philippines, PELÍCULA is made possible by Rustan’s, The PTC Group of Companies, the Cinematheque Center of Iloilo, the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in The Philippines, TBA Studios, Netflix, and the Spanish restaurants La Picara, Barcino, Bar Pintxos, Tapella, and Pablo Bistro.

Bela Padilla, together with director Paul Soriano, graced the red carpet at the prestigious 32nd Tokyo International Film Festival to represent “Mañanita” last October 28, 2019.

Produced under Ten17P and VIVA Films and penned by award-winning filmmaker Lav Diaz, “Mañanita” is among the eight Filipino films featured in the Festival. The drama-suspense film was given a Graded A by the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB).

Bela first participated in the Tokyo Film Fest last 2016 for “I America” by Ivan Andrew Payawal, which competed in the Asian Future category.

“The red carpet event last night was different than the first time. I was nervous, but at the same time, super calm. Maybe because we’re here already at terms I didn’t expect at all,” said Bela Padilla.

She added, “I didn’t know we were part of the main competition until our press con a few weeks ago, and that in itself is already a huge blessing for me. There are so many interesting films this year, and I’m just happy to be here.”

Meanwhile, director Paul noted that this is also his second time in the Tokyo Film Fest as his film "Kid Kulafu" had its Japanese premiere under the Festival's CrossCut Asia Section last 2015. For this year's Tokyo Film Fest, he shared, "We had a really successful world premiere and a great Q and A right after the screening. The audience really embraced the film and really got what I was trying to say.”

He also mentioned, "I was also told that out of over a thousand submissions, they included ‘Mañanita’ in the 14 competition films, so it’s just truly an honor. We’re really excited and honored to represent the Philippines here in Tokyo.”

“Mañanita” revolves around a female sniper who loses her job and spends her nights getting drunk in a bar–until a phone call changes everything.

The film had its world premiere last October 29, 2019 at the EX Theater Roponggi and will screen nationwide this December 4, 2019.

The 32nd Tokyo International Film Festival runs from October 28 until November 5, 2019.

DOST-SEI Awards 207 Scholarships Under Bangon Marawi Program

Wazzup Pilipinas!

207 Qualifiers of the Bangon Marawi Program on STHRD signed the Scholarship Contract as they begin their journeys as DOST Scholars to help Marawi City get back on its feet.

Two years since the siege, Marawi City is onwards to its full recovery.

Providing a boost to its resurgence is the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute’s (DOST-SEI) Bangon Marawi Program in Science and Technology Human Resource Development (STHRD), which recently awarded a total of 207 scholarships in the undergraduate and graduate levels for students from the city.

A total of 177 Bachelor of Science (BS), 27 Master of Science (MS), and three Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) qualifiers under the Batch 2 of the Bangon Marawi Program in STHRD was approved by DOST Secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña last September 5, 2019. Most of these qualifiers then signed the Scholarship Agreement on October 16 at the Mindanao State University-Main Campus in Marawi City.

DOST-SEI Director, Dr. Josette T. Biyo, led in orientating the qualifiers on the scholarship policies. Once documentary requirements have been validated, the newly hailed scholars will begin receiving financial assistance such as monthly stipend and book allowance for the First Semester AY 2019-2020. These will be released through the Project Coordinator at MSU – Iligan Institute of Technology in Iligan City.

Dr. Henry P. Aringa, Project Leader of the Program at MSU-Marawi, lauded DOST-SEI’s efforts in helping build back the once progressing city. He urged the qualifiers to maximize the opportunity by pursuing excellence in their studies and later on serve the city.

Biyo likewise congratulated the grantees and urged them to finish their courses to help their families recover from the impacts of the siege. “This program seeks to have a long-term effect on your city as we want you to be the ones to spark the rehabilitation of human and social infrastructures of Marawi,” she remarked.

Biyo also mentioned that the DOST-SEI provided a Learning Resource Center (LRC) not only for the scholars under the Bangon Marawi Program but for all DOST Scholars under the RA 7687, RA 10612, and Merit Scholarship Programs, as well as for graduate scholars under the Science and Technology Regional Alliance for National Development (Project STRAND). The LRC, which began operation last September 27, is equipped with 15 desktop computers, a laptop, and a printer/scanner that can be used for academic research, tutorials, and other activities.

The Program, which began early 2018, was able to help hundreds of affected students pursue their studies. Notably, out of the 217 BS, 20 MS, and 10 Ph.D. scholars from the first batch of beneficiaries, 131 have already graduated of which three and nine earned Magna cum laude and Cum laude honors, respectively.

“This is proof that despite the damages brought about by the siege, the people of Marawi have remained strong and hopeful. In the next few years, we believe that the Bangon Marawi scholars are already equipped with the knowledge and skills to bring a new dawn to Marawi,” Biyo said.

Suwag o Suko? Conserving Tamaraws and Empowering the Rangers Who Protect Them

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Representatives from different sectors came together to witness how the Tamaraw Conservation Programme (TCP) and Mounts Iglit-Baco Natural Park (MIBNP) rangers risk their lives to protect the tamaraw (Bubalus mindorensis), a wild buffalo found solely on the island of Mindoro in the Philippines. It is among the world’s most endangered animals, considered critically-endangered and just a step above extinction in the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species.

To raise both awareness and funds for tamaraw conservation, the Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN) of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) partnered with TCP plus a talented group of storytellers for a documentary entitled Suwag o Suko: Saving the Tamaraw from Extinction.

“Suwag o Suko is a love letter to the tamaraw rangers and everyone working in conservation. It was made with local audiences in mind because we want to instill a sense of pride, shared identity and ownership for our natural heritage,” explains Celine Murillo, who wrote the script with director Mark Ace Gatdula and other pro bono volunteers. The hour-long documentary examines the economic, social and cultural significance of the tamaraw and how its survival is invariably tied to the management of the MIBNP, its indigenous mangyan tribes, plus the continuous conservation efforts of rangers.

Tamaraw Month is celebrated each October. We herald this unique, biologically-important and culturally-significant animal. We must spread awareness for conservation,” says DENR TCP Coordinator Neil Anthony del Mundo.

Canon Philippines, Tamron, Benro, Eco Explorations and the Mindoro Biodiversity Conservation Foundation pitched in to make the film possible.

“One of Canon’s major priorities among sustainability programs is biodiversity conservation, locally and globally. It is an honor to partner with DENR’s Biodiversity Management Bureau and BIOFIN to bring light to pressing issues surrounding our wildlife, particularly of endangered species like the tamaraw. We hope to inspire millions of Filipinos to support conservation programs to help keep this species thriving in the wild,” says Canon Marketing Philippines, Inc. Vice President Anuj Aggarwal.

Nestled between Occidental and Oriental Mindoro, MIBNP hosts the largest remaining population of tamaraw at 480 heads, down from 523 in 2018. A century ago, an estimated 10,000 heads inhabited all of Mindoro, from coastal lowlands to its highest peaks. In the 1930s, widespread cattle ranching spurred a deadly outbreak of rinderpest, which soon infected many of the island’s bovines. The tamaraw population was decimated – by 1969, numbers were estimated to have plummeted below 100.

The population has rebounded to 480 heads within MIBNP – a far cry from the original 10,000, but a sure sign that TCP and MIBNP’s conservation efforts are paying off. Leading field conservation efforts are two dozen TCP and about a dozen MIBNP rangers who conduct park patrols, keep poachers at bay and dismantle animal traps illegally set-up in strict protection zones.

Since its inception in 2012, BIOFIN has worked with both the public and private sectors to enhance protection for the country’s biodiversity hotspots by helping secure funds to implement sound biodiversity programs.

UNDP Philippines Resident Representative Titon Mitra highlighted the importance of financing biodiversity conservation by noting that, “According to the latest UN biodiversity report, up to one million animal and plant species are on the verge of extinction. We are now faced with an unparalleled loss of biodiversity at an alarming rate. Now more than ever, we need to take a multi-stakeholder approach in addressing this crisis.”

BIOFIN Philippines’ second phase runs from 2018 to 2022 and includes the implementation of finance solutions to raise resources for the tamaraw and other endangered species through creative crowdfunding and diaspora. Tamaraw conservation for example, is now being considered for corporate social responsibility funding.

Under the DENR-UNDP collaboration, BIOFIN works to close the financing gap for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity by identifying, accessing, combining and sequencing sources of biodiversity funding to finance the Philippine Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (PBSAP), the country’s roadmap to conserving its natural resources. PBSAP’s implementation will cost PHP24B per year or PHP334B (USD7.4B low estimate) from 2015 to 2028. However, public expenditure was estimated at only PHP4.9B per year (USD110M), revealing an annual gap of almost PHP19B (USD349M). Finance solutions addressing this gap have been identified and are presently being piloted by BIOFIN.

Suwag o Suko: Saving the Tamaraw from Extinction is scheduled for nationwide screenings in the coming months, with possible international exposure through video-on-demand platforms. A national caravan shall follow the film launch to create additional buzz and catalyze support for tamaraw conservation.

Parties interested to support conservation either in-cash or in-kind can contact BIOFIN at biofin.ph@undp.org.

What Are the Benefits of Hiring a Car Accident Lawyer?

Wazzup Pilipinas!

According to some of the latest publications released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the number of vehicle accidents in the U.S. ranges around 6 million each year. These accidents happen for a number of different reasons, including the negligence of another driver. In some cases, one driver may hit another vehicle because they were under the influence of alcohol or a drug that was not prescribed by a licensed physician. Or, the driver at fault was speeding through a red light and hit one or more cars. Whatever the case or situation, even in the smallest accidents that occur, you and your family should always be prepared to contact an experienced personal injury lawyer to represent your case.

By contacting an experienced personal injury lawyer to represent you in your vehicle accident, you can take advantage of the many essential benefits that these legal professionals offer to their clients.

1. Work on a Contingency Basis -- No Upfront Cost to Represent You

You may not have the money to hire an attorney for the car accident that you were involved in. Therefore, it may leave you in the position of representing yourself. While you do have this option, this is also one of the best ways to throw the success of your case away. In fact, unless you are an attorney that has the experience and the skills to handle your own case, you will be up against a trained team of professionals in the insurance field and their team of legal aids.

To avoid these problems, there is at least one thing that you need to know, and that is to hire an attorney that will charge no upfront cost. These are the attorneys that will work for you on a contingency basis. Simply put, these attorneys do not get paid unless you get paid. Therefore, it is in their best interest to work aggressively to obtain the compensation that you are actually due to pay for all of your medical bills, car repairs and etc.

2. Protects Your Confidential Information -- Authorized to Represent You in All Related Confidential Legal Matters

As mentioned before, after your car accident you can legally represent yourself if you choose to do so. Therefore, whenever the insurance companies need to verify information, they will approach you for your personal authorization for the releases needed. For instance, they may need your authorization to obtain your medical records, employment documentation and so forth. Once your authorization is provided to them, they can acquire confidential information from your employer and your health providers directly. In these situations, the insurance companies may also be granted access to information that is not related to your claim.

To avoid these issues, when you hire a car accident lawyer in Los Angeles, you can minimize and completely eliminate these issues from occurring. This is because your lawyer can act in your place to obtain the information that is needed and only release relevant documentation to the other side's insurance provider or their lawyers on your behalf.

3. Protects Your Case By Working within the Time Constraints Provided by the Law

Based on the complexity of your claim, you may find that some cases could drag on and on for months and even years. So, there is usually more than one deadline that will need to be met to remain in the legal limitations of the law. The statutes for certain legal claims can differ from state to state so you may or may not know what they entail. However, when you hire an experienced personal injury lawyer, they can lead you through each time period so that the success of your case is never compromised.

4. Protects Your Medical examinations from Being Completely Biased by the Other Side’s Physicians

When you are hiring your own car accident lawyer in Los Angeles, you are also protecting your own interest in a number of different other ways. One of the most critical is ensuring the results of your medical exams are not biased or compromised in any way. For instance, when the insurance agent requests a medical exam to be performed after your accident, the norm is to hire their own medical doctors to receive an assessment of the injuries sustained in your accident.

To prevent these situations from occurring, the best car accident lawyer in Los Angeles will your interest to make sure these examinations are handled correctly. Their role is to monitor these activities to ensure that are handled professionally and according to the laws of that particular state.

5. Trial Lawyers Can Pursue Your Case in Court On Your Behalf

Unfortunately, insurance companies will do everything they can to settle your claim quickly and at a minimum cost to their insurance provider. It is also important to note that these professionals are good at what they do, especially because they are handling similar claims all of the time. Therefore, if you are trying to handle your case by yourself without the appropriate legal representation, they will more than likely pay you just enough to go away quickly. Also, once you have signed their agreements, you’ll have no further legal recourse left, even if new symptoms from the car accident arise.

On the other hand, one of the best benefits of hiring West Coast Trial Lawyers to handle your claim is that you will be protected from such unscrupulous tactics. To find out more information on these and other related legal topics, please contact West Coast Trial Lawyers for additional information.

6. Lawyers Know What it takes to Prove Case and Knows When Not to Settle

If the insurance company is not playing fair and they do not want to pay you the actual value of your claim, West Coast Trial Lawyers are also trained in this part of the legal process as well as what should be done. For instance, to prove your case in court, the judge and jury will rely heavily on the proof that is presented. So, these attorneys know what type of evidence in the police reports, testimony required by the witnesses and the information from the scene of the accident that proves who’s fault it was and why.

7. Works Aggressively to Obtain the Highest Possible Compensation for Your Claim

If you work as your own attorney, you are bound to only get so much from the insurance company’s attorney on the other side of your case. In fact, these attorneys will already know that you are limited in your capabilities and what you can do in the legal field.

That being said, another key benefit to hiring one of the best lawyers in the legal field is securing experienced professionals who's job is to beat these insurance companies in court. For instance, because these lawyers are trained to work aggressively to prove their case before a judge and a jury (if necessary), they will stop at virtually nothing until they know that the other side cannot win. In short, when you hire seasoned trial lawyers, they will work in your best interest to obtain the highest possible compensation that the laws allow in your state.

By contacting an experienced personal injury lawyer to represent you in your vehicle accident, you can take advantage of the many essential benefits that these legal professionals offer to their clients. For a list of the best personal injury attorneys in Miami, click here.

7 Items That Should Be in Your Company Christmas Goodie Bags

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Gifting your employees, affiliates, or guests with company goodie bags is a perfect way to display your company’s values and offer something meaningful they can take home and talk about. Holidays are a time of giving and an ideal opportunity to show your gratitude and respect to your company’s most valuable asset — the people who make your company.

To show your appreciation, you can put together a bundle that will make an unforgettable impact on your employees. Below are some items that you should consider including in your company Christmas goodie bags.

1. Handmade Gifts

There are plenty of DIY gifts you can put together to create unique and personalized presents. These handmade gifts are mostly made of ingredients and materials that are cheap and easy to get. Assemble a charming Christmas food jar filled with healthy seeds and nuts, or fill a lovely-looking box of homemade desserts and cookies for your employees to enjoy with their loved ones at home. If you want to create a more personalized gift, consider making coasters with employee names or special messages.

2. Custom Wristbands

Other than being a powerful and inexpensive promotional product, custom-designed silicone wristbands are an ideal fun and flexible gift that anyone can wear around their wrist. Wristbands come in a plethora of colors and several material types, so make sure to consider more options to create a good variety. Also, in order to make wristbands more personalized, you can deboss a number of different messages into them, as well as your company logo.

3. Plants & Grow Kits

A small touch of natural green can be a perfect addition to anyone’s workplace. Include a small, low-maintenance plant into your goodie bag to add a breath of fresh air to everyone’s table and keep everyone happy. Alternatively, you can include a grow-your-own plant kit to encourage workers to be more nature-friendly, especially if your company promotes sustainability.

4. Shopping Gift Cards

Most people spend a lot of time shopping for all kinds of things and gifts during the Christmas Holidays. Enrich your giveaway bag by adding a gift card that’s good for a variety of shopping branches, from food to clothing stores. You may even load the cards with a specific amount of money for your employees to spend on themselves or their loved ones.

5. Portable Powerbanks

Today, most of us own a smartphone. Christmas time can be hectic and if you’re constantly working on the go, you and your workers are bound to experience a shortage of battery life on your phone. Prevent this from happening by adding a branded portable powerbank in your corporate goodie bag to make sure your employee’s phone batteries are always fully charged, both for work purposes and personal use.

6. Eco-Friendly Shopping Bags

How many times have you taken a plastic bag from the grocery store? Filling up your fridge for Holidays is something everyone does, and plenty of people are still taking plastic bags to carry their groceries home. Christmas can be a time to give something good to our planet. Include eco-friendly shopping tote bags in your company package and make the world a better place, one nature-friendly item at a time.

7. Ambiance Enhancers

Everyone likes the soothing scent or the warm look and feel of scented candles. With the Christmas spirit already being in the air, using several ambiance enhancers can make a dramatic impact towards improving the overall smell and feel of your environment. Include aromatic candles, essential oils, or fragrance diffusers into your goodie bags. You may even go for Christmas edition ones that have the wonderful smell of pinecone, cinnamon, or spiced orange.

Make your Christmas goodie bag an unforgettable sign of your gratitude towards employees. The holiday season can be a great opportunity for you to show workers just how much you value their hard work and effort to make your business grow. It’s also a good way of lifting up their spirits and improving their morale, which tends to lead to increased work efficiency, too.

Dillon Danis to Pay for Bullied Kid's Jiu-Jitsu Gym

Wazzup Pilipinas!

One of the most ruthless things that can ever happen to a kid is bullying. It brings a mental trauma which the kid isn't mature enough to handle, because at times we have seen even the toughest people giving in to such incidents. However, when a video of a kid being bullied by his schoolmates surfaced on the internet, it gained a lot of coverage and attention, including that of the prominent MMA star Dillon Danis. Even the websites covering the latest MMA news have confirmed it that the MMA fighter, who is believed to hate bullying to the core has taken the video seriously and later, he offered to help the kid who got bullied in the bathroom of what looks like his school.

Dillon Danis came across a 72-second long video which showed a kid being surrounded by many others and was later thrashed by them for some reason. As per the reports of the UFC News articles, Danis was heartbroken at watching the video and offered the kid to join Jiu-Jitsu classes for free, as he would pay for the classes.

However, he received a lot of help from the netizens who left no stone unturned to make the Bellator star get into contact with the kid. The two had a conversation on the internet as well, and the screenshots of the conversation were later on shared by Danis himself.

He informed the kid of his noble gesture on social media itself. In an introductory message, Danis wrote:

I wanna pay for a membership to the closest jiu-jitsu gym nearest to you if you are interested.

Surprised as any other kid would have been, the kid replied: Fr, (for real ?) to which Danis gave an affirmative.

The kid was overjoyed at the offer and later on, Danis wrote why he did that. He said:

That video broke my heart my man sorry you had to go through that but I got your back. Let's do this.

Once the talks with the kid were over, it was Dillon Danis who told the media that he has already set up the gym for the kid and that he is working on the finalisation of a suitable date for the kid to have his first class. He also shared a picture of the bullied kid dressedBin martial arts attire.

Dillon Danis, who is a jiu-jitsu professional himself and a coach of the UFC fighter ConorMcGregor, has time and again told the World that bullying is evil and it should be put to an end. Also, he had made a similar offer to another kid, who was supposedly bullied in his locker room by other kids. This happened almost a month back and Danis paid for his jiu-jitsu classes as well.

As a martial artist, Danis is seen promoting such gestures and he has time and again
iterated that martial arts are for a bigger purpose — of not having to use them, which is an aggressive defence strategy in hand to hand combat.
