Safe Spaces On Giving Free Condoms with Lube Launched

Wazzup Pilipinas!

There’s nothing wrong in protecting one’s self, more so in using condoms with lube during sexual activities. This is what LoveYourself, an HIV prevention advocacy group, reiterates over and over again.

Yet, the usage of condoms with water-based lubricants as protection against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remains a taboo among many Filipinos, even to populations most at-risk to these sexual health concerns.

“The government offers condoms for free not just as contraceptive, but more importantly as a protection against contracting HIV and STIs. We just have to mobilize its distribution to ensure that we really target and reach the right market or people,” LoveYourself Executive Director Ronivin G. Pagtakhan emphasized.

Pagtakhan pointed out that “Correct and consistent use of condoms with water-based lubricants remain the most effective method in preventing the spread of HIV, but accessibility and people wanting to have access to these services is still a huge challenge.”

“A sizable number of condoms procured by the government are largely unknown and untapped by the public, hence sometimes these were put to waste unused,” he added.

Safe Spaces Official Logo

Thus, LoveYourself in partnership with Save the Children introduces on Friday (22 December) the Safe Spaces PH at Greenbelt’s My Cinema in Makati City through an adult education dialogue to bring in the idea of a sustainable condom distribution supply chain that is backed-up by technology for public discussion.

Safe Space PH will be partnering with non-discriminatory and sex-positive establishments to serve as “Depots” or safe spaces where a condiment station, a receptacle where condoms with water-based lubricants are dispensed, is installed.

Safe Spaces also ensures seamless supply of condoms for distribution on these Depots.

It will also entail a heavy digital campaign for smart selling of the Depots and the program at large. In addition, Safe Space App is available on Google Play store and App Store to provide a snappy service, especially for the target population such as the youth and men-having-sex-with-men.

The Safe Space PH is a holistic solution to the barriers on active utilization of free condoms by the people.

An actual interface of the Safe Spaces App showing the location of Depots and its details.

These barriers include people’s averse to avail free condoms from the health centers or any designated areas where it is available; at times, insufficiency of condom supply on these designated areas; many people do not know that government-subsidized condoms are given for free; and many people do not know where to get these free condoms.

LoveYourself also encourages the public to visit its two clinics, which are also safe spaces not just for free and confidential HIV screening, but for free condom with water-based lubricants as well. These are LoveYourself Anglo along Shaw and LoveYourself Uni in Taft-Buendia. Both clinics are open every Wednesdays to Saturdays from 12:00 nn -7:00 p.m., and Sundays at 9:00 a.m.-2:00p.m.

DOE, Energy Team on Heightened Alert vs 'Vinta'

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Energy Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi today directed the energy family to observe energy resiliency measures to combat the adverse effects of Severe Tropical Storm (STS) Vinta (international name: Tembin).

“The DOE assures the public that the energy family will work together on a 24/7 basis to immediately secure and normalize the energy supply in the STS Vinta-affected areas,” Cusi concluded.

According to the weather bureau PAGASA, the maximum sustained winds of STS Vinta reach 65 kilometers/hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 110 kph. The center of the storm has traversed the vicinity of Marawi City in Lanao del Sur, compromising power facilities in the franchise areas of electric cooperatives in nearby provinces.

“We are coordinating with electric cooperatives and other energy stakeholders in the affected areas through the Inter-Agency Task Force on Securing Energy Facilities (IATFSEF). We continuously monitor developments and reports so that we can mobilize our assets to assist the most affected households and stakeholders in the storm-hit areas,” Cusi said.

For the transmission sector, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines reported that the affected energy facilities are as follows:

1. Paranas-Quinapondan 69kV Line, which was out at 10:49 p.m. of 22 Dec. affecting Eastern Samar Electric Cooperative (ESAMELCO);

2. San Francisco-Tandag 69kV Line, which was out at 6:19 p.m. of 21 December affecting Surigao del Sur II Electric Cooperative (SURSECO II);

3. Bislig-Cateel-Baganga 69kV Line, which was out at 1:28 a.m. of 22 December affecting Davao Oriental Electric Cooperative (DORECO);

4. Jasaan-Kinoguitan 69kV Line, was out at 4:06 a.m. of 22 December but with atrial restoration at 5:23 a.m. The transmission line affected Camiguin Electric Cooperative Incorporated (CAMELCO) and Misamis Oriental II Electric Service Cooperative (MORESCO II);

5. Balo-i-Marawi 69kV Line, which was out at 5:02 a.m. of 22 December affecting Lanao del Sur Electric Cooperative (LASURECO);

6. Agus6-Kauswagan 69kV Line, which was out 7:31 a.m. of 22 December affecting Lanao del Norte Electric Cooperative (LANECO);

7. Agus 6-Mapalad 69kV Line, which was out 10:18 p.m. of 22 December 2017 affecting Iligan Light & Power Inc.

According to the NGCP, the inspection and restoration of the affected lines will be in full swing as soon as the weather allows.

For the distribution sector, the National Electrification Administration (NEA) reported that the LASURECO franchise area is in total blackout due to heavy rains and strong winds brought about by TS Vinta. Initial reports showed that electric lines and steel poles were toppled down in some areas in MSU Barrio Salam, MSU Fisheries, Municipality of Marantao in Lanao del Sur and Municipality of Baloi in Lanao del Norte. Meanwhile, a Quick Response Team is now doing all the clearing in the affected areas.

In Agusan del Sur Electric Cooperative (ASELCO), only 1 feeder tripped in Trento substation due to a tree leaning on the line. There are also occurrences of minor trippings on the lateral lines and sitios in Veruela area.

Davao del Norte Electric Cooperative (DANECO), particularly the areas in Compostela Valley, are experiencing heavy downpour. Only the towns of Montevista, Nabunturan and Mawab are energized, while the rest are still experiencing trippings. The Municipality of Laak and Asuncion are experiencing power outage but linemen and crew were already dispatched to patrol the lines.

For the downstream oil industry sector, the DOE is closely coordinating with industry players on the ground for updates and reports on matters affecting petroleum products.

Necessary things to Consider before Picking a Car on Rent

Analyze your Requirements

First of all, you should analyze your requirements, and then decide the type of car that would go for your purpose. For off-road trips and uneven roads, it is recommended that you should consider hiring an SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) that could ensure a comfortable ride.

Apart from this, if you need a smooth ride that can ensure good comfort for a long journey, consider a sedan. The level of comfort in sedan cars is a bit higher as compared to the other segments. You can expect better handling and comfort for long hours.

The Condition of the Car

It doesn’t matter whether you are seeking an airport limousine for your next trip or planning to book a hatchback for your trip, you need to crosscheck the condition of the vehicle. A poor conditioned car could be the worst thing that could happen during your journey. It is strongly recommended that you must properly examine the engine by considering a test drive before you finalize the car.

If you don’t have an idea regarding the engine’s condition and smoothness, you can consider installing a vehicle tracking device to help you detect and fix minor mechanical issues or calling an automobile expert for the same. It is perhaps the best idea that could lend a hand in choosing the optimum vehicle and avoiding any glitch during your journey.

The Policies of the Renting Agency

Another thing that you need to consider is the policies of the car renting service provider. One should always read the policies that depict the use of the vehicle and the other important aspects related to the vehicle hire. People usually ignore these policies and then they get disappointed when they have to pay extra bucks for violating the company’s policies.

Moreover, make sure to hire the vehicle on daily fare basis and not by the miles that you drove. This is because you may end up paying a lot of money if you hire your vehicle by the total distance traveled as compared to the daily rental policy.

Conclusion

These tips will eventually help you in picking the right vehicle with

OCEANA: Strengthened Collaboration for the TaƱon Strait

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Government agencies including local chief executives, fisherfolk and nonprofit organizations promised to strengthen their collaboration in protecting the TaƱon Strait from illegal and destructive fishing.

About 288,000 small-scale fishers rely on the area for sustenance, but competition from commercial fishers who illegally enter the Strait, plus destructive fishing methods used by small-scale fishers, have led to an overall decline in productivity. From an average of five kilos of fish per trip, yields have plummeted to two kilos – and many fisherfolk households earn less than PHP100 daily.

“No Filipino should go hungry in his native land. I believe we can achieve this if we protect our coastal and marine resources,” says Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo MaraƱon.

Declared a protected area in 1998, the TaƱon Strait is a 161-kilometer long channel separating the Islands of Cebu and Negros, famed not only for being a rich fishing area, but as a tourist destination. In the channel lie popular tourist sites such as Bantayan Isle, Malapascua, Moalboal, the Mantalip Sandbar and Bais, where whales and dolphins abound.

Encompassing three provinces, 42 coastal towns and cities, plus nearly 300 barangays, overlapping mandates have led to largely inconsistent policies in conserving the area. Since 2015, the Protected Area Management Board and its Executive Committee worked hand-in-hand with Site Management Units, the Protected Area Office, plus various stakeholders from the government, private sector and civil society for improved conservation measures. They are now guided by an approved management plan and enforcement plan for the sustainable management of the TaƱon Strait.

Last week, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources convened the 2nd Enforcement Summit, in partnership with Oceana, in Cebu City. Government agencies and local governments worked closely with nonprofit organizations and community champions to review the state of enforcement in the Strait over the past year while identifying solutions to current challenges, especially illegal and destructive fishing.

“Despite its status as a protected seascape, the TaƱon Strait still faces illicit activities, destroying its ecological integrity and depriving fishermen of their rightful catch. Only through our continued strong collaboration can the fisheries of the TaƱon Strait continue to thrive,” emphasizes Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources National Director and Fisheries Undersecretary Eduardo Gongona. He pledged to add more patrol vessels in the area to fight illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

A recent Social Weather Stations survey commissioned by Oceana found that illegal and destructive fishing is the most seriously-perceived threat to the oceans, next to pollution.

“We have apprehended 656 suspects and over 2000 explosives from January to November this year alone,” notes Police Regional Office 7 Director Chief Superintendent Jose Mario Espino. The fight against illegal fishing is high in the priority list of the Philippine National Police.

Oceana and its allies reiterated the need for stronger law enforcement to guard the northern and southern entrances or ‘gates’ of the TaƱon Strait, while requiring all vessels to comply with the legal directive to install Vessel Monitoring Measures for fishing transparency and safety-at-sea. Vessel monitoring allows for land-based monitoring of all vessels, ensuring they stay in designated fishing zones, while acting as a safeguard in case boats run into accidents.

Adds Cebu Governor Hilario Davide III, “We still have a long way to go but we need to continue finding ways to improve our enforcement efforts. We shall continue to work together as a team, where everyone has a stake not just to benefit responsibly from our natural resources but to manage it such that our future generations will have sustainable coastal and marine resources.”

The enforcement summit concluded with an announcement from Park Superintendent Prospero Lendio that the TaƱon Strait Protected Area Office has an approved allotment of PHP1M of their PHP8.7M budget for 2018 for seaborne patrols and enforcement activities. Participants all pledged to work together to protect the Strait.

“The TaƱon Strait is an important traditional source of fish for millions of Filipinos. Doing the right thing for TaƱon paves the way for the sustainable use and management of our fisheries to address food security concerns,” concludes Oceana Philippines Vice President Atty. Gloria Estenzo Ramos. (30)

Leaders from Top Real Estate Firms Gather at Lamudi Event

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Dubbed The Outlook by Lamudi, the event brought together leaders from the industry’s top developers to discuss trends in mixed-use developments, revitalizing old estates, and building new ones

Aside from acknowledgement of the real estate industry’s best players and projects (based on the results of a 10,000-property-seeker nationwide survey), The Outlook by Lamudi also held a coming together of the industry’s top experts and leaders to discuss what is next for the Philippine real estate sector.

One of the highlights of the event is a discussion on mixed-use developments, spearheaded by Ayala Land Inc. (ALI). Representing ALI is Anna Ma. Margarita Dy, the company’s Group Head for Strategic Landbank Management, who shared with the attendees ALI’s vision when the company develops its multi-billion-peso mixed-use projects.

What makes a great mixed-use development

In her presentation, Dy highlights the importance of linking people. According to her, ALI has a total of 24 estates across the Philippines, ranging in size from 10 hectares to 2,000 hectares, with each having a different focus, including promoting well-being and an active lifestyle or creative technologies. Although ALI sees each estate as individuals with their own distinct personalities, they have one thing in common: they are all positioned alongside major infrastructure, along major toll roads, along major railways, near seaports, and near airports.

Dy cited one of ALI’s most ambitious projects, Arca South, as an example. According to her, the development is built around ease of connectivity, and in its midst will be an integrated transport system that is set to accommodate 2,000 provincial buses as they enter Metro Manila from the south every day. Another flagship development in Ayala Center called One Ayala is also touted to become a major intermodal transport hub, which will link tens of thousands of people each day to city buses, taxis, shuttles, and the MRT.

“These are multibillion investments that we undertake because no matter how big we build our malls, or how tall our skyscrapers, or how beautifully we landscape our parks, for people, interconnectedness is top priority,” shares Dy.

Revitalization of existing estates

Meanwhile, another firm present during the Lamudi event is legacy developer Ortigas & Co., who led a discussion on revitalization of city developments and its ambitious plan to redevelop a Metro Manila icon: Greenhills Shopping Center.

According to Thomas Mirasol, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the 86-year-old firm, Ortigas & Co. is set to revitalize the much-loved shopping complex. “The company is in a unique situation in that [the estate] is centrally located in the heart of Metro Manila and we have a very huge land bank that is ripe for [re]development.”

And with property giants SM and Ayala already onboard the Ortigas group, there’s very little room for doubt that the developer is going to up the ante for its existing Metro Manila assets.

First on its revitalization blueprint is the redevelopment of Greenhills, which will essentially cement its footing as a full-fledged mixed-use development. The company has earmarked Php60 billion for at least five phases of improvements, the first two of which already amount to Php10 billion. According to Mirasol, the makeover is set to take at least 10 years to complete and will complete the Greenhills’ offering.

However, the whole revitalization game plan is not limited to Greenhills, as Ortigas & Co. also has big ambitions designed for the expansion of Frontera Verde and Capitol Commons, both in Pasig City.

A capital outlay of Php60 billion has been designated for the enhancement of Frontera Verde, which may include mall and hotel components, while an initial Php5 billion has been set aside for the expansion of Capitol Commons.

All these redevelopments should lead to sustainability. But more than going green, Mirasol sees a bigger picture to the redevelopment of these assets. “There’s also sort of the economic sustainability, which is building for a community that will by itself, not only support its own development over the long term, but actually spill out its benefits to the surrounding communities,” he explained, “and by doing that, we can almost help spur the revitalization of a much broader area rather than just the estate that we’re developing.”

On building new cities

Sprawling across a 204-hectare reclaimed land along Manila Bay in ParaƱaque is Aseana City, which is turning out to be the country’s entertainment and resort hub. And the name behind this ambitious project is Aseana Holdings, helmed by its young CEO Delfin “Buds” Wenceslao, who discussed the details that go into building a new city during the Lamudi event.

Already a full-fledged mixed-use development, Aseana City is quite different from its counterparts as it is centered around entertainment; after all, the development has three billion-dollar casino resorts as neighbors, while the Mall of Asia Complex is nearby. Ayala Land is also scheduled to complete its 9-hectare shopping mall in Aseana City—the property giant’s largest mall project to date.

However, Wenceslao said that Aseana City is not all fun and games. The development has also become a location of choice of many business locators, many of which are BPO firms. He notes that a huge slice of their office offering has been eaten up by BPOs, which is about 30 to 40 percent of its office portfolio.

Living spaces are also in the pipeline, notably with launch of the developer’s 170-unit Pixel Residences. Says Wenceslao: “This completes the whole self-contained model of the community. I think for any 24/7 city, it’s important that people live where they work…it decreases traffic. It improves the retail viability of restaurants, banks, all of these services.”

One of most exciting prospects for Aseana City is that it is also at the center of the government’s big infrastructure push. In the middle of 2018, the NAIA Expressway was completed, making the ParaƱaque business district easily accessible to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and the Metro Manila Skyway.

The Southwest Integrated Terminal and the LRT Line 1 Cavite extension, likewise, make the area a gateway to the budding towns south of Metro Manila. This excites Buds for the midterm and long-term prospects for the development, “Having gone through several cycles, what we’ve established is that in the end, whatever we build here, in the next five to ten years, will have its share of demand just because of the location.”

And with land bank starting to be depleted in other major business centers, Buds believes they have another card up their sleeves, “If you look at the big land mass that’s substantially undeveloped yet, this is probably the reason why a lot of the developers even from [the] Fort, Makati, the big names, are starting to come here.”

And come they did.

ONE Championship’s Scintillating Submissions of 2017

Wazzup Pilipinas!

It has been a great 2017 for ONE Championship as the constantly-flourishing martial arts landscape in Asia continues to expand and more fans have jumped onto the trend of the fastest growing sport in the world.

What endears avid martial arts fans to the sport is the purity of the various disciplines and techniques, which resemble a real battle in both the physical and mental aspects.

Grappling in particular has seen an epic surge in depth for Asia-based competitors as over the past year, ONE Championship’s talented athletes have impressed with some spectacular submission finishes.

Here is a look back at the best submissions of the year in ONE Championship.

#5) Jomary Torres pulls off shocking submission win in ONE Championship debut

In a recent upset among female atomweights, Jomary Torres of the Philippines made her promotional debut at ONE: KINGS & CONQUERORS in Macao, China on 5 August and halted Thai superstar Rika “Tinydoll” Ishige’s rapid rise through the ranks.

Ishige, who had previously won her first two bouts by spectacular finish, has proven to be a talented grappler.

However, Torres was quick to point out that Ishige was severely lacking in the striking department as the Filipina proceeded to test her opponent’s stand-up game.

After surviving several submission attempts while softening up the Thai in round one, Torres would then work to finish in round two, sensing that Ishige was slowly fading.

Just before the midway point in the second frame, the Filipina striker surprisingly caught Ishige in a choke, pressed her up against the cage, and proceeded to pursue the submission until the Thai tapped out.

#4) May Ooi rallies back to clinch submission win at ONE: QUEST FOR GREATNESS

At ONE: QUEST FOR GREATNESS on 16 August, Singapore’s “Mighty” May Ooi made her promotional debut against Ann “Athena” Osman of Malaysia.

The former Singaporean Olympic swimmer turned martial artist stepped into the ONE cage for the first time and was undoubtedly looking to make a statement.

Before the bout, Ooi boldly predicted her victory, claiming that she would win by first-round submission.

It almost looked like it was not going to happen as Osman enjoyed early success, knocking Ooi down and then plastering her with stiff ground-and-pound, but the Malaysian strawweight was unable to put the Singaporean away.

With less than two minutes remaining in the opening frame, Ooi would make good on her promise as she dug deep to rally back against Osman.

Ooi took her opponent’s back and caught her in a deep rear-naked choke, leaving Osman with no other choice but to wave the white flag.

It was an upset of huge proportions as the Singaporean took home the victory on Malaysian soil.

More importantly, it signified Ooi’s arrival on the biggest stage of martial arts and as a new player in the blossoming women’s strawweight division.

#3) Alex Silva secures title contender position with crafty armbar

Before he defeated Yoshitaka “Nobita” Naito with a masterful striking performance to claim the ONE Strawweight World Championship last 9 December in the main event of ONE: WARRIORS OF THE WORLD in Bangkok, Thailand, Alex “Little Rock” Silva displayed his elite Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills on another elite Japanese martial artist.

Silva met an unbeaten Hayato Suzuki, a highly-regarded wrestler and Grachan champion, on the undercard of ONE: LEGENDS OF THE WORLD on 9 December.

Fans expected a technical ground war with two talented grapplers each wanting to showcase their best techniques, but what they got instead was a complete shocker.

From out of nowhere, Silva out-scrambled Suzuki following a takedown attempt and latched onto an armbar that forced a quick tap from Suzuki.

The result marked Suzuki’s first loss in 20 bouts as a professional and conversely catapulted Silva to an eventual world title shot weeks later.

Silva routed Naito by way of unanimous decision to clinch the ONE Strawweight World Championship.

#2) Bibiano Fernandes flaunts submission prowess to retain bantamweight crown

Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes, who has been consistently considered one of the best bantamweights in the world, has undoubtedly achieved legendary status.

Although the 37-year-old Brazilian grappling wizard continues to face increasingly tough opposition, ONE Championship’s most dominant titleholder just keeps getting better.

On 5 August in the headliner of ONE: KINGS & CONQUERORS, Fernandes faced American contender Andrew Leone, who vowed to give the champion his stiffest test to date.

However, as Fernandes has consistently proven throughout the years, he only gets better with age.

Fernandes made quick work of Leone while unveiling new dynamics in his offensive arsenal, overwhelming his American challenger with a relentless attack.

After pounding Leone with hard blows on the mat, Fernandes finished matters on the ground with a classic rear-naked choke.

The most fearsome thing about Fernandes is that after over a decade of dominance, he looked the absolute best that he has ever been in his most recent bout.

#1) Angela Lee submits challenger against all odds to keep martial arts gold

When ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion Angela Lee took on undefeated two-time Muay Thai world champion Istela Nunes at ONE: DYNASTY OF HEROES in Singapore on 26 May, the bout was expected to be the toughest test of Lee’s young career.

Little did anyone know, it would turn out to be more difficult than anyone could have imagined.

In the first round of their five-round title bout, Lee stormed out of the gates, and though Nunes had her moments in striking exchanges, things soon hit the ground.

On the canvas, Nunes was in Lee’s world as the reigning champion threatened with a variety of submissions from dominant positions, even coming close to pulling off another twister to close the round.

It was the same story in the second stanza, where it was apparent Lee was set on finishing things early. Lee maintained her breakneck pace and soon had Nunes in an anaconda choke.

After working on it repeatedly, Lee finally succeeded in tapping the Brazilian to retain her title and remain undefeated.

Fortinet Survey Reveals 48% of APAC IT Decision Makers are Confident of Their Cybersecurity Postures Despite 86% of Organizations Being Breached

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Prioritization of Security Fundamentals Such as Employee Education Lacking, According to Respondents

Fortinet, the global leader in broad, integrated and automated cybersecurity solutions, today revealed additional findings from its Global Enterprise Security Survey. According to the research, 40 percent of IT decision makers (ITDMs) at 250+ employee organizations around the Asia Pacific are confident of their cybersecurity posture, despite 86 percent of organizations being breached in the past two years. In addition, 82 percent believe they are doing better than their peers with regards to cybersecurity, while only six percent believe they are lagging behind. The research is a reminder of the importance of employing cybersecurity best practices and fundamentals as well as the urgency to avoid complacency in defending against cyberattacks.

“ITDMs continue to prioritize the maintenance and upgrade of their cybersecurity solutions in an attempt to combat today’s cybersecurity adversaries. Although important, other security best practices within their broader cyber and technology strategy are still missed opportunities. In particular, the urgency to prioritize security hygiene, educate with broader awareness, or implement security approaches that leverage automation, integration, and strategic segmentation, is critical to defend against the highly damaging Internet attacks possible in our near future,” said Patrice Perche, senior executive vice president, worldwide sales and support at Fortinet.

Complacency despite clear concerns

Respondents reveal that 33 percent of breaches experienced in the last two years were the result of social engineering, ransomware and email phishing. In 2018, 73 percent of APAC businesses are planning programmes to educate employees in IT security, reflecting a growing awareness that breaches are caused by carelessness and ignorance as much as maliciousness.

Another top concern for organizations is protecting access to the network. Under half (44 percent) of APAC ITDMs feel confident that they have full visibility and control of all devices with network access. A similar 45 percent of APAC ITDMs feel confident that they have full visibility of the access level of all third parties who frequently have access to networks, while 52 percent of APAC ITDMs feel confident that they have full visibility and control of all employees. This lack of confidence in the network visibility suggests that this is an area that should be treated as a top concern for organizations. Yet, basic security measures like network segmentation are only being planned by 26 percent of APAC businesses in 2018. Without network segmentation, malware entering a network will often be left to spread.

Employee knowledge key for security in organizations

When asked about what they would have done differently over their career in security, 46 percent of APAC ITDMs wish they had invested more in employee security awareness training to prevent a security breach. Educating users can lessen the chance that they become victim of an intrusion attempt that targets one of the weakest links in the cybersecurity chain: employees themselves.

In 80 percent of breach incidents, in the first instance the APAC board blames the IT department – either a specific individual (34 percent) or the department as a whole (47 percent). Employees outside the IT department get blamed in 30 percent of breach incidents, even though they’re often recognized as the weakest link. The IT department can no longer be the only one responsible when it comes to a breach. BYOD and IoT, the use of cloud-based applications, and shadow IT, all extend the security responsibility to the broader organization − and employees.

Balanced Cybersecurity Investment Priorities Are Critical

In 2017, ITDMs investments ranked the following as their number one investment:

35% - New security solutions and services
27% - Upgrading security solutions
21% - Implementing security policies and process
9% - Employee training
4% - Auditing and assessment

Continued technological investment allows businesses to keep pace with malicious attacks and prepare for them by implementing a comprehensive security solution. Investments in new and upgraded security solutions will continue in 2018, but 27 percent of APAC respondents also reveal that investments towards employee training will become one of the top 3 investment priorities.

Report Methodology

The 2017 Fortinet Global Enterprise Security Survey was undertaken on behalf of Fortinet by independent market research company Loudhouse to examine the changing attitudes towards security in business in July and August 2017. The global survey of IT decision makers with responsibility/visibility of IT security, received 1,801 anonymized respondents across 16 countries (US, Canada, France, UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, Middle East, South Africa, Poland, Korea, Australia, Singapore, India, Hong Kong, Indonesia). Respondents to the online questionnaire were not aware of the purpose or sponsor of the report.

DOTr, BCDA Start Building New Terminal at Clark Airport

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The construction of the New Terminal Building at the Clark International Airport has finally been set into motion.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr), Bases Conversion Development Authority (BCDA), Clark International Airport Corporation (CIAC), and the Clark Development Corporation (CDC) led the groundbreaking and capsule-laying at the airport grounds early today. The ceremony marks the start of finally expanding and developing what would be Asia’s next premier gateway.

“It’s quite sad that it took this long. The last six or seven years, things didn’t move. But we forget about the past. That’s water under the bridge, because now we move forward,” said BCDA President and CEO Vince Dizon.

Spanning around 100,000-sqm including landside and airside facilities, the new terminal is designed to accommodate an additional eight million passengers every year. It is expected to decongest the Ninoy Aquino International Airport terminals, as well as spread development in the peripheries.

Part of a bigger picture

The expansion of the Clark airport is part of a bigger development plan for North and Central Luzon. Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade said that the new terminal will complement other infrastructure projects in the area: Manila-Clark Railway, Subic-Clark Cargo Railway, and the New Clark City.

“Ikakabit po natin ang proyektong ito sa Manila-Clark Railway. Not later than 06 January 2018, we will mobilize the construction of the first segment from Tutuban to Malolos, and hopefully we will complete the entire line to Clark before the end of President Duterte’s term,” Tugade said.

Dizon, a proud son of Pampanga, is also confident that the new terminal will encourage more people to fly from Clark.

“Before Duterte, there were only seven flights from Clark. Now, there are 200 flights from Clark, and that happened in the first year of the administration. That is political will of a President from Mindanao, who said as early as the campaign, that we need to develop Clark,” Dizon said.

Upon assumption into office, Tugade likewise encouraged airlines to launch more flights from Clark in order to decongest NAIA. He also transferred some general aviation activities there.

Turning dreams into reality

Tugade, who was a former president of the CDC, expressed his joy upon seeing a long-delayed project come into fruition.

“Matagal na ho ang proyektong ito. Yung mga pakiusap naming dati naitapon sa mga binging tenga. Pero ngayon, binibigyan natin ang katuparan ang matagal nang pangarap ng ating mga kababayan na magkaroon ng world-class international airport,” he added.

House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, himself a former transportation secretary, also echoed Tugade’s sentiments. He also expressed his excitement over the many opportunities that the new terminal will be bringing to the Philippines.

“The expansion of the Clark International Airport will expand growth and opportunity outside Metro Manila. This means more business and more jobs for everyone. Clark airport will be the gift that keeps on giving,” he said during the ceremony.

Senator Dick Gordon, who played a vital role in establishing Freeport zones in Luzon, is pleased to finally see the airport being fully-utilized, calling it “a new beginning for our country.”

“Infrastructure is not a project of a government. It is a project of the people. It is a project of vision. This is about opportunity, the great equalizer. This is about making the future our friend,” he said.

On-time delivery of projects

Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez, who represented the economic team of the Cabinet, assured that the delivery of the terminal will not be delayed.

“Before, projects take an average of 30 months under PPP. I assure you that this will not happen in the infrastructure projects of the Duterte administration,” Dominguez said.

He also reported that the Clark expansion project is considered the fastest to be implemented by the national government. It broke ground just six months after getting the NEDA Board approval.

The construction of the new terminal is the first hybrid project under the BuildBuildBuild Infrastructure Program of the Duterte administration. Under the hybrid model, the government will build the infrastructure using its own funds to ensure fast delivery of the project.

Former President and now Representative of Pampanga Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, whose term saw the building of the CIA, was the special guest at the groundbreaking ceremony
