He is famous not only for his incredible skills on the court, but also for his stubborn unwillingness to compromise his identity. Now, 11-time NBA All-Star Allen Iverson endeared himself to the nation as he showed passion and willingness to help when it comes to kids and the needy.
Iverson recently visited the country to headline “All In” – a local charity basketball event that included basketball clinics and a charity basketball game for the benefit of Gawad Kalinga, a non-profit group that focuses on holistic rehabilitation and empowerment of impoverished communities. Digital imaging leader Epson Philippines Corporation (EPC) partnered with PC Worx, a provider of computers, office equipment, and computer products and peripherals, for this event.
The first day (Nov. 4) of the event featured a basketball clinic with more than 80 kids (10 to 15 years old) participating. PBA’s most accomplished coach, Tim Cone, acted as head coach for the kids.
The charity basketball game was held in MOA Arena last November 5, and showcased Allen Iverson as coach, together with former NBA and PBA stars and streetball legends such as Air Up There, AO, G-Smith, SpecialFX, Mr. Afrika, Bone Collector, The Professor, Jerry Codinera, Ren Ren Ritualo, and Willie Miller playing for Team Gawad Kalinga. The opposing team, Team PC Worx, boasted of Tim Cone (coach), DerMarr Johnson, Kiefer Ravena, Jeron Teng, Almond Vosotro, Ola Adeogun, Javee Mocon, Jeth Troy Rosario, Jaymar Perez, Mark Belo, and Thirdy Ravena. About 4,000 basketball enthusiasts watched the game.
Approximately 200 families from Brgy. Holy Spirit, Gawad Kalinga Bulaklakan Chapter in Quezon City will benefit from funds raised in the “All In” event.
“Gawad Kalinga’s nation-building efforts are such a worthy endeavour, and Epson is proud to partner with PC Worx in this commendable initiative,” said Epson Philippines’ Head of Marcom & PR, Donna Ferro.
As a basketball fan, nothing can make me happier when I see all of my idols play against each other. Professor and Allen Iverson are great streetball players that I look forward in seeing in person. Their cause is also good because it can help some of our "kababayans".
