Blade and Soul MMORPG

NCsoft today revealed that it is bringing hit Korean MMORPG Blade & Soul to Western markets and sent two trailers along to introduce the game to its new intended audience.

Blade & Soul is a martial-arts focused Asian fantasy MMO under development by NCsoft's Team Bloodlust. The game has reached a concurrent-user peak of 230,000 players already in Korea, putting it solidly in the territory of other Korean hits like Tera and Aion.

The action looks good, and the Qing Gong ("light body") movement makes us want to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon around every game. As soon as NCsoft has a Western release date, we'll let you know.

Counter-Strike :Global Offensive

The counter-strike series haven't really changed much since it first came out in 1999. And the game sticks to its core elements even in its newest update, Counter Strike: Global Offensive.

Long time CS players fans will both rejoice and be disappointed with the fact that the gameplay and mechanics are still the same. While it's great to know that not a lot has changed and familiarity is comfortable, there's also a lack of fresh innovation. There are only a few new weapons. Plus, out of the sixteen maps, 8 are recycled from previous versions in the series, such as Dust, Dust 2, Office, Italy, Aztec and etc.

But then, there are a few new updates. Firstly, the visuals have gotten an upgrade, giving you updated visuals of maps, characters, and weapons. There are also two new gameplay modes -- Arms Race and Domination. In Arms Race you have unlimited lives and you receive a new weapon after every kill.

Domination, on the other hand, is when the terrorists plant a bomb at the bomb site, or either side can eliminate all opposing players to win the match. You only have one life, so you better be careful and have a strategy else be prepared to watch your mates in the spectator screen.

CS: GO is great for old timers and newbies alike, but then on a sidenote, it provides little reason for fans to upgrade.

Is Selling Pre-Owned Games Considered Piracy?

Piracy is unauthorized duplication of patented merchandise, but buying second hand legit games is not Piracy.

Buying and selling second hand games is legal. Check online and you'll see similar items for sale, there are per-owned games. I've bought and sold games for a bargain. Game developers just don't like it because they won't earn from it. The only thing they can do is tie the hard copy game to your account.
1 disk 1 console policy?

If this stupidity will come true, expect another video game crash for people will stop buying video games and they will shift to a more feasible hobby...I hope that will not happen.

I dare the next gen console to implement this, they'll dig their own graves.

Second hand = piracy on game, I still think that the intention of game developers is to sell their games per individual player. You can stretch that to, probably your family member, girlfriend, etc. But if you sell the game to others, the second hand buyer of the game committed an offense equal to piracy to the eyes of the developer. Think about it, if you pass around a single copy of a game, sell it as second hand after installation to a million player, you think that would be OK to the game dev?

But since there's no law about it, that is why lately multiplayer games are becoming popular, or similar online gaming. That way, they can tie the game to our accounts, increasing the number of individual sales.

One of the rights of an owner is the right to dispose his property whenever he wants to. If you cannot dispose your property, then chances are it is not your property. For me it is not piracy to sell second hand games because you are just exercising your right as an owner of the game to dispose it when you please. To limit such disposition of the game is equal to frustrating one's right to own that physical copy of the game.

But you may argue that we are talking about software here. Exactly my point because, as far as I am concerned, software are like houses too or cars or toys for that matter since these all belong to the same classification: personal properties. To create an exception in favor of software will be absurd since how do we classify it now if obviously it can be appropriated as well, and be subjected of our dominion, like the rest of the properties that we know of. For a software not to be a property, it must be outside the commerce of man which is obviously not the case.

I may understand your argument if you say that the effect of selling a second hand game, in the eyes of the developer, is similar to that of piracy. But to equate the act of selling a second hand game to piracy is too premature a conclusion and is very damaging especially to those who just can't afford to buy a full priced game but nevertheless still want to convey a message to the developers that they appreciate their work.

I think there's a difference on our treatment of the word "piracy". I may be wrong in that I am stretching it too far. But I think, we really have to treat software differently from tangible properties. Exactly why we have licenses that's open source software, which you are free to share and modify, and some that are not.

When you buy software, you're not buying it as a property, you are paying for the rights to use the software. Its not like "I'm fed up with Windows 7, here's my disc at half the prize, and I'll just install Ubuntu from now on", it doesn't work like that. In essence, you are buying a legitimate copy by purchasing from legitimate sources, but the "legal aspect" of the game ends with you. The next person buying the second hand game may own your legitimate copy, but doesn't own it legally, as he did not pay for its rights from the game developer.

Also, lets think about it like this. There's DRM free games, with no activation. Example is Torchlight II (to be released on the 20th, yay!). You pay $20 and you may download the game from the developers site. Question, if you've had enough of the game, can you sell that as second hand? I can burn it to a disc and sell it, its a legit copy anyway. The guy who buys it can sell it afterwards, and again and again. How does this differ from someone who downloaded a torrent copy?

Why do you call downloading a game that you did not pay for as piracy? Those games that you bought from Quiapo, or downloaded from a torrent site, but if you paid for the second hand copy,  should you call that legit?

For me, if you reproduce it that's piracy but if you sell your copy while losing all of your rights to use or destroy it, it's still legit. Let me finish my point by saying that it's better if we just agree to disagree instead since both sides have really valid points. These views can make for a good thesis topic, and we could probe about it deeper on both valid points.

Ainol Novo 7 Fire Review

Specifications:

AMLogic-M6 1.5GHz Dual-Core CPU with Mali400 400MHz Dual-Core GPU
7" 1280x800 HD-Resolution IPS with 5-Touch Capacitive Screen
2.0MP Front-Facing and 5.0MP Rear-Facing Camera with LED Flash
Wi-Fi B/G/N, Bluetooth 2.1, Accelerometer, Light Sensor and G-Sensor
1GB DDR3 RAM, 16GB Storage with microSD Slot upto 32GB
5000mAh 3.7V Battery Capacity, Magnesium-Aluminum Alloy Shell
Pre-installed Google PlayStore and other Essential Applications
Android OS 4.0.4 IceCreamSandwich.

Performance Benchmark:

 Additional Improvements:

--HD Resolution IPS Screen - as discussed above, its really great and comparable to other expensive brands, text are much clearer, images are very vivid making the Novo7 Fire suitable for reading e-Books or Magazines and watching HD Movies. You can even use the Tablet outdoor, thanks to its IPS Screen technology which other expensive brands also use. However, don't expect too much as it doesn't have Super AMOLED screen that defy the Sunlight. Around 30% view-able @ maximum brightness under the Sun is still good though.

--5000mAh Battery Capacity - much larger than any other 7" China brands has to offer. A fully charged battery could last 7hrs of Wi-Fi Browsing, Video Playing, and Gaming under optimum settings.

--Bluetooth 2.1 - most Ainol fans has found answers to their request. Now Ainol included a built-in Bluetooth 2.1 to their Novo7 Fire. Users can now use Bluetooth Headset for listening musics, or browse your Mobile Phones and PC to copy its content and vise-versa.

--Light Sensor - this feature auto-adjust the Tablet's brightness depending on the environment. Quite a good feature to have.

--Improved Wi-Fi Antenna - one major update from the Wi-Fi antenna that were also used on Ainol Novo7 Aurora-2. It now has Aluminum Foil placed on the Wi-Fi metal antenna which was missing on Novo7 Aurora-2, result; poor Wi-Fi range. Novo7 Fire's Wi-Fi should now perform lot better with its improved Wi-Fi antenna.

The Cons:

--Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4 - Android OS ICS-4.0.4 isn't bad, but Google Nexus 7 showed us how good Jelly Bean 4.1 experience is and made us to crave for that Android OS be installed on our Android Tablets. Ainol doesn't have such great support when it comes to latest firmware, other China brands especially Tablets with Rockchip RK3066 CPU offers stable Jelly Bean 4.1 as stock firmware.

--Minor Overheating - like we mentioned above, this could be fix by an optimized kernel on Ainol's future release firmware. Leaving the tablet at default Normal CPU mode is recommended.

--No built-in GPS & 3G - well, this isn't expected on such cheap device like these China Tablets. Including this feature would make the Ainol Novo7 Fire a complete Tablet a normal users could have. It does support External 3G using several list of USB-3G Dongles via OTG-cable.

Victims of EA

Handy infographic on EA.

This does not include yet Pandemic Studios (developer of Star Wars Battlefront, Saboteur, Mercenaries) that was shitdown last  2009.

I think Criterion, DICE at BIoware are the only remaining from the list.

EA visceral games makers of Deadspace is still good. :)

Funny EA divided Bioware into 5 studios. xD

EA Bioware—focuses on creating multiplatform, role-playing, MMO and strategy games.

BioWare Edmonton
BioWare Austin
BioWare Montreal
BioWare Mythic (formerly Mythic Entertainment)
BioWare Victory (formerly Victory Games)

Victory is the former EA LA the developer of C&C games, its now just a brand of Bioware to cover up their former name.

However, Westwood Studios were the ones that created C&C games. It was bought by EA in 1998, tthen closed in 2003. That was why there was EA LA from 2003 until 2010. Then it became Victory Games, until 2011 it became Bioware Victory.

And Westwood Studios was the pioneer of "modern" RTS with Dune II. They inspired Blizzard to create Warcraft (their prior game was The Lost Vikings). Then eventually the Command & Conquer games were born. And the game Command & Conquer: Red Alert featured one of the most iconic songs of PC gaming history: Hell March.

Piracy helps a big deal on killing those devs as well.

GeForce GTX 660 and GeForce GTX 650 Launching

The launch of the new cards – GeForce GTX 660 and GeForce GTX 650 is today, 13th September.

The GTX 660 (non-Ti) is based on the GK106 core architecture which packs 960 cores and a 2GB GDDR5 (192-bit) memory. Core clock is maintained at 980/1033MHz and 6008MHz for memory. TDP is rated at 140W and card requires a single 6-Pin connector for power.

The GTX 650 on the other hand is based on the GK107 core architecture which already exists on the GT 640 GPU however this version while packing the same 384 cores runs faster at 1058MHz core and 5GHz memory clocks. The card has a TDP of 75W due to which the board requires a 6 Pin connector to boot. The GTX 660 cost $229 while the GTX 650 cost $149.

The Problem with Toolkits

Most common errors that we've encountered in the international forums are done thru the use of toolkits.

Google has always intended users to utilize the images and platform tools for everyone that is why it is available for all. The problem with toolkits is that it is not always updated and people who use it rarely read the FAQs. They may have the same procedure but some developers of these toolkits update them very late and people have already used the incorrect method. True that it's a one click guide but then the danger lies in the long run. Too many posts have already been seen with the lines, "help my nexus won't turn on. I used this and that toolkit...". That's what we need to avoid.

Using fastboot and adb method is actually very simple and you don't need to be a developer in order to learn the process. One particular example is someone used the toolkit method and got an update. Whatever he did he couldn't get the update to install successfully. It was because of the cwm that was installed. It could have been easily fixed by bringing back a file like recovery_from_boot.p and reboot in order to get the stock recovery but the toolkit deleted that file so you need to flash again. Had the person know how to use fastboot, he could have easily solved it in one step. However, since he does not, he had to either look for a cwm flashable stock recovery or reflash the full rom again. He could not find the latter so he had to undergo the process of backing up and restoring all of his data. This is what I'm trying to avoid for users of Nexus devices.

Check out this thread in xda: <click here for link>

It wouldn't hurt to know the process in playing around with your phone/tablet. Nexus units have actually the easiest and most accessible internals and a few command lines will not hurt. At least you learn in the long run.

This is the method i've been using since nexus one days.

I've been using Nexus gadgets for quite some time and have always followed this method. In case anyone is interested, let me share.

How to flash factory images to you Nexus 7 using manual or adb/fastboot method and root(optional)

Files needed:
1. Asus usb drivers: <click here for link>
UND: <click here for link>
2. Factory images from google developer site: <click here for link>
JB 4.1.1 <click here for link>
3. Fastboot and adb files: <click here for link>
4. For root(optional)
SuperSU: <click here for link>
CWM: <click here for link>

Instructions:
1. Create a folder in your desktop and name it "nexus7"
2. Download the drivers and extract in the folder "nexus7"
3. Download the JB 4.1.1 image and extract in the folder "nexus7". The first extraction would show another zip file in that so also extract it in the "nexus7" folder.
4. Download the fastboot and adb files and extract also in the "nexus7" folder
5. Download the optional root files needed and also place in the "nexus7" folder

At this point check the "nexus7" folder and see if you have:
a folder named usb_driver_r06_windows
a folder named universal_naked_driver_xxxxx
4 files that say "adb" in the beginning and 2 files that say "fastboot"
5 files that end in .img
If you plan to root, there should also be the files "cwm-xxxxxxx.zip and touch recovery 5.img" in the folder
some additional files that we don't need for this but it's better that all are inside

5. Turn on your tablet and go to settings - developers options and turn on usb debugging
6. connect your tablet to the pc. at this point you may need to manually install the drivers using device manager. some pc's would automatically do it but if you are prompted, do it manually and point to the folder on your desktop inside the "nexus7" folder named usb_driver_r06xxx
7. if all goes well, open a command prompt
8. navigate to the folder on your desktop. normally, commands for that is "cd desktop" then press enter then "cd nexus7" then enter
9. type "adb devices". there should be a prompt showing the serial number of the device if successful. if no serial number is shown, that means the drivers did not install properly. go to device manager of your pc to check and verify
10. type "adb reboot bootloader". this would make your tablet go into bootloader or fastboot mode. this is with the android figure and on top of the screen you see the word "START"
11. at this point the pc would prompt again for usb recognition so you need to install the naked drivers. do the same manual method as in number 6 but point it to the folder universal_naked_driver_xxxxx
12. type "fastboot devices" if successful, just like in number 9, there should be a serial number on the pc screen. if no serial number appears, driver installation for fastboot mode failed so you need to redo number 11. easiest way to start again is to simply remove the cabe from the tablet and reinsert

when all above has been met, you have passed the most difficult part in flashing. most people have issues with driver recognition and stop there so they never learn how to properly flash.

13. type "fastboot oem unlock". this unlocks your bootloader so you can flash images. this procedure will wipe out your device. if your device is already unlocked, (you see a lock icon in the Google logo when turning on your device) skip this step
14. your tablet will verify if you want to unlock the bootloader. navigate with volume buttons and choose yes with power button. the phone will reboot to the same interface but the very last line at the bottom will show the word "UNLOCKED"
14a. if at this point you only want to root and not flash the system files, skip 15-25.
15. type "fastboot reboot-bootloader"
16. type "fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-grouper-3.34.img"
17. type "fastboot reboot-bootloader"
18. type "fastboot flash system system.img"
19. type "fastboot flash userdata userdata.img"
20. type "fastboot flash boot boot.img"
21. type "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
22. type "fastboot erase cache"
23. type "fastboot reboot-bootloader"
24. (optional) type "fastboot oem lock". i mentioned optional because if you need to unlock again, all data will be erased. i personally do not lock it unless i need to bring back a nexus gadget for warranty. i suggest not locking as well but it will be a matter of choice.
25. type "fastboot reboot"

You are now done and you can start set up. I suggest also that after the initial boot, you do a factory reset because there is a bug in the nexus 7 when restoring to factory state that the storage of the 16gb version shows only 8gb total. A factory reset will bring it back to 16gb.

For rooting:
1. Copy the file "cwm-xxxxxxxx.zip" to your virtual sdcard. a simple copy-paste would do
2. Assuming you came from step 14 above, you'd still be in the bootloader mode so just type "fastboot boot touch recovery 5.img" on the terminal in your pc. If you are coming from a fresh boot, simply turn off the device, hold volume up and down and press power in order to access bootloader mode.
3. type "fastboot boot touch recovery 5.img"
4. Your phone interface should now show the touch recovery image with the option to "install zip from sdcard", touch on that and choose zip from sd card. You'd see the cwm file you copy pasted and click on it. Follow the prompts and after which use the power button to go back to the main menu then hit Reboot. You're done.

Raspberry Pi Model B Revision 2.0

Good news guys.... RPI model b rev 2 will be manufactured in UK not in China.

Based on what I've read, from the very start they really planned on producing the Raspberry Pi in the UK but at that time they couldn't find a company who could do it, that's why they decided to have it manufactured from China.
