ONE Championship Breathes New Life Into Asian Boxing

Wazzup Pilipinas!

If there is one athlete who put Asia on the map of the international sporting scene, it is boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao.
Pacquiao’s in-ring achievements speak for itself as he is the only pugilist in history to capture major world titles in eight different weight classes and was long rated as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world by most sporting news and boxing websites.
However, boxing’s popularity in the Asian region is slowly ebbing due to several factors, including Pacquiao’s imminent exit from the sport and the growing reputation of another form of combat sport like mixed martial arts.
Boxing promoters such as Bob Arum of Top Rank tried to replicate Pacquiao’s magic and rise to stardom with Chinese boxer Zou Shiming, but the 86-year-old American businessman failed to get the desired result.
As the demand for boxing continues to wane in Asia, the sport has found an unlikely ally in ONE Championship, a mixed martial arts organization that was established in Singapore seven years ago.
Already solidified itself as one of the premier mixed martial arts promotions in the world, ONE Championship has set its sights on boxing.
ONE Championship recently announced its partnership with Nakornloung Promotion to co-promote the world title defense of WBC super flyweight champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in the main event of ONE: KINGDOM OF HEROES, which is set to take place at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand on October 6.
“Our work in boxing has always been driven by our passion and love. The best part of it is that we get to give life-turning opportunities to boxers and their families. Each of them has their own stories, but they are all driven by the same dream - to be the world champion,” said Thainchai Pisitwuttinan, the head honcho of Nakornloung Promotion.
“I am glad that our promotion and ONE Championship have coalesced in having a common mission and vision for combat sports athletes around the globe,” he added.
Dipping its toes into boxing is a no-brainer for ONE Championship after it launched the highly-acclaimed ONE Super Series last April, which was created with the purpose of showcasing the purest forms of striking arts such as Muay Thai and kickboxing on the biggest and most prestigious stage of competition.
At a press conference in Manila, Philippines three months ago, ONE Championship big boss Chatri Sityodtong hinted plans to establish a professional boxing league in addition to ONE Super Series, inviting boxers from all over the globe to join the promotion.
A few months later, Sityodtong proved that he was dead serious in hosting boxing matches in ONE Championship, announcing his partnership with Nakomloung Promotion in staging Rungvisai's homecoming bout in Thailand on October 6.
Sityodtong described the organization's venture into boxing as akin to ONE Championship’s buoyant effort in elevating mixed martial arts in Asia.
“When we started seven years ago, nobody wanted to talk to us. They didn’t even want to work with us. Of course, that changed eventually. We have experienced such exponential growth in all areas. If we could do for it mixed martial arts, we can do it for boxing as well,” Sityodtong stated.
Since its inception in 2011, ONE Championship has taken mixed martial arts in Asia into greater heights, broadcasting to over 1.7-billion potential viewers across 136 countries around the world.
With a highly-active fan base that is engaged in both digital and social media platforms, the biggest local and global brands in the world have been attracted to ONE Championship.
Forming a number of key partnerships, ONE Championship is at pace for a billion dollar valuation and an initial public offering in the next couple of years.
In line with ONE Championship’s strategy of developing local and homegrown mixed martial arts athletes, the promotion ventured and scouted talents into new markets like Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, India and Vietnam as well as untapped areas of the Middle East, China and Russia.
Sityodtong attributes the promotion’s success to its content and its extremely-loyal fans that are growing in number every single day.
“ONE Championship captures the essence of entertainment similar to a show in Las Vegas, but combines it with the sporting excellence of elite martial artists. It also breaks the mold of being a global sports media property that is based in Asia,” he explained.
Sityodtong’s claim was supported by Filipino boxing standout Jerwin Ancajas, who was at ringside to watch ONE: HEROES OF HONOR live in Manila, Philippines this past April.

Ancajas, the reigning IBF super flyweight titleholder, commended ONE Championship's work in its production and promotion of athletes.
"This is the first time I've watched a live mixed martial arts event. I've always watched it on TV, but it's a whole different experience seeing it live. I really had a delightful time. The production value is truly world-class,” the boxer shared.
The 26-year-old native of Panabo City, Davao del Norte pointed out that ONE Championship’s dive into the boxing scene would make a huge impact on the sport.
"ONE Championship is a huge promotion. It will be good for boxing because there are only few big boxing promoters in the Philippines and in Asia. This kind of support is needed, and should boxing have this kind of events, it will be a huge help for boxing in the region,” Ancajas stressed.
Sityodtong admitted that he is fully aware of the vastness of boxing history in Asia, giving birth to boxers who left indelible legacies in the sport with the likes of Pacquiao, Gerry Peñalosa, Pancho Villa, Gabriel “Flash” Elorde, Chang Jung-Koo, Yoko Gushiken and Yuh Myung-Woo.
With ONE Championship trying its hand in boxing, Sityodtong believes that the organization will breathe new life into the sport in Asia to produce more top-notch pugilists.
“I consider ONE Championship as the caretaker of every form of martial arts in the world, including boxing. We will make sure that the new generation of boxers in Asia will be fully nurtured. The legacy that Manny Pacquiao and other boxing greats have created must continue. We are reaching out. We shall grow together,” he ended.

Youth Orgs Urge First Time Voters

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The First Time Voters network was launched last Monday in Manila. Now on its 17th year, the First Time Voters Project is a networking and education program initiated by various youth organizations who remain committed in raising the awareness of the youth in the political system and to raising the youth’s involvement in their electoral engagement towards new politics and transformative governance.

“Your right to vote is your most empowering right. It gives power to policies, agenda, and values that will decide how your environment and community will be in the future,” First Time Voters Network Convenor Ian Serrano said.

According to the 2016 data of the Commission on Elections, the youth vote is the key to victory. Those age from 18 to 35 comprise about 37 percent of the entire electorate back in 2016.

“The students of this nation have the power to decide whether or not they will let their issues be buried or assert themselves and their concerns in the current political conversation that is happening.” Ateneo De Manila Sanggu Task Force Head Aly Alberto said.

“Students should facilitate meaningful conversations about politics in their schools. They are in a position to move away from the toxicity and misinformation that surrounds conversations about politics nowadays.” Adamson University Student Government President Nico Mercado said.

“The Sangguniang Kabataan has the necessary knowledge of their community to reach out to their fellow youth to galvanize them to register and vote.” said  Kent Aawitin from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila Student Council.

“As part of the political system, it is our obligation to make sure that our presence matters and their political participation is highly important. People like us are in a position to help because they were able give us our legitimacy through their votes.” Quezon City Sangguniang Kabataan Federation President Noe Dela Fuente said.

“Meaningful conversations about politics should not end in the four walls of academic institutions. It should be brought and extended to local communities. Information and opportunities to participate should be democratized to the grassroots.” Bry. Sampagan, Batangas SK Chair Clark Banaag said.

COMELEC spokesperson James Jimenez explained the registration process and how first time voters could register and take part in the 2019 elections.

“Your first vote should be meaningful. It shouldn’t rely on personality politics or name recall but it should be based on values and what kind of future should this country have.” Serrano ended.

Visiting The Philippines On A Low Budget

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The Philippines is definitely one of the best places that you can go for a vocation. The country is renowned for its variety of tropical islands as well as the numerous stretches of beaches that are not easily found in other parts of the world. In addition to that, the country also boats some of the friendliest people in the world thus making it a great option for those who are looking for a great holiday spot.

However, as you are already aware, holidays in foreign countries are always perceived as an expensive affair even though that is never the case. Below are some tips on how you can enjoy a great holiday in Thailand without having to spend a fortune.

Buy Your Tickets As Early As Possible

The cardinal rule of flight booking has always stated that for cheaper flight tickets, you must book your tickets as early as possible. However, it is surprising that despite many people bee aware of this, they still make last minute booking which ends up costing them a lot of money. Thus, once you have made you mind that you want to have your holiday in the Philippines, please make sure that you book your tickets as early as possible.

Take advantage of the Low season

In Philippines, the low season is usually between June and September. As commented by different travellers on Trip Advisor, service providers in Philippines tend to lower down their prices significantly during these months as they purpose to appeal to many customers as possible. Indeed, it is not even a surprise to find that hotels have discounted their prices up to 35%. Thus, you can save a lot by going for vocation in the country during these months. Nevertheless, be informed that the weather might not be quite favourable.

Take Advantage of The Variety of Quality Street Food Available

You cannot claim to have experienced the Philippines culture without trying out their meals. There are numerous market stalls around the country which offer quality meals. Thus, you might consider avoiding the meals options offered by the hotels and have your meals at the food stalls. For about $5, you will be served a place of quality seafood.

Be Ready To Negotiate

One of the good things about Philippines is that the prices that are normally quoted are not always the final prices. Thus, when you are out there for excursions, make sure that you just don’t pay prices that are quoted to you at your first time of asking. It is absolutely perfect for you to request for discounts and bargain for prices quoted at first.

Do Not Travel During The Festive Period

Festive periods are quite busy in Philippines as the natives are quite religious. Thus, in order for you to be able to pay low prices for flights, accommodation, and to some extent meals, avoid visiting the country during the festive period when demand for everything is quite high and that tends to increase the prices.

Visit various Philippines Travel Websites for More Information

This list is not in any way exhaustive. There are numerous websites that have written detailed information on visiting Philippines such as Wazzup Pilipinas! You should make a point of visiting these websites when planning your vocation to the Philippines since they have a lot of information that can be beneficial to you.

Tower of Power Live in Manila

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The much-awaited Manila performance of Tower Of Power is finally happening September 7, 2018 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum to be mounted by Ovation Productions. The triple bill event also features Dennis Lambert and Kalapana.

Tower's musical odyssey actually began in 1968 when Emilio Castillo met Stephen "Doc" Kupka in July of that year. When Doc auditioned during a band rehearsal at Emilio's house, Emilio's father called him into the kitchen and offered the following advice: "Hire that guy, he's got something." This was how Doc and his signature baritone sax came to be a major part of the band’s sound, and on August 13, 1968, Tower of Power, as we know them today, began playing gigs, and soon became very well known in the area.

Many other bands came out of the San Francisco Bay area in the late 60's. Bands like The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Journey, and others all helped to define the "San Francisco Sound." Tower of Power has always claimed Oakland, California as their hometown, playing area venues and making a name for themselves.

Tower of Power was signed to Bill Graham’s San Francisco records and their first album was East Bay Grease. All of the compositions were original tunes written by Castillo and Kupka. Their next album, Bump City, led to a string of hits and memorable albums that include many of the songs that TOP fans come out in force to hear, even to this day. Over the years, the Tower of Power Horns have recorded with hundreds of artists as diverse as Aerosmith, Elton John, Little Feat, Phish, Santana, Heart, and many others, forever infusing the radio airwaves with Tower’s musical DNA.

Since the beginning, Tower of Power has never stopped touring and recording. Always in demand, the band never fails to entertain and amaze their fans. Tower is truly blessed to have a dedicated following that often travels to see the band, and in many cases fans will plan their vacation or work schedule around an appearance of TOP. New generations of fans come to see them perform as their timeless music continues to excite fans of all ages.

DENNIS LAMBERT

Another featured performer in this September 7, 2018 Smart Araneta Coliseum event is songwriter-producer and singer Dennis Lambert. Dennis’ album Bags and Things was very popular in the Philippines in the early 1970s and contained hit songs Of All the Things, Ashes to Ashes, Somebody Found Her Before I Lost Her, and So Little Time. He also either co-wrote and/or produced huge 1970s hits for other singers like Ain't No Woman Like the One I've Got for the Four Tops, Rhinestone Cowboy for Glen Campbell, Hard Core Poetry and She’s Gone for Tavares, Baby Come Back for Player, Love Music for Sergio Mendes & Brazil ’77, Dream On and Rock and Roll Heaven for The Righteous Brothers which revived the duo's recording career in 1974. In the 1980s, Lambert continued to write and produce alone under his Tuneworks banner. Credits include hits Nightshift for The Commodores, We Built This City and Sara for Starship, I Live For Your Love and Pink Cadillac for Natalie Cole, and Moment Of Truth for Survivor. Lambert was the subject of an award-winning feature-length documentary film, Of All the Things, directed by his screenwriter son Jody Lambert, which followed him on a cross-country tour of the Philippines promoted by Ovation Productions.

KALAPANA

As for Kalapana, they emerged as one of the most popular bands on the Hawaiian music scene in the 70s, and is much loved by Filipinos for their songs,Nightbird, The Hurt, You Make it Hard, and When the Morning Comes. They still enjoy frequent airplay in Manila’s top radio stations until today. Kalapana received the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. Ovation Productions took them on a Philippine Tour back to back with the band America in 2012.

It will truly be a thrill for Filipino music lovers to see all three of their favorite artists perform together in one evening of retro music at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. It certainly cannot get any better than this!

DOE Taps More Media for Greater Public Understanding of the Energy Sector

Wazzup Pilipinas!

ENERGY 101: Department of Energy (DOE) Undersecretary Felix William B. Fuentebella delivers the keynote address on behalf of Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi during the E-Power Mo: Energy 101 for Media last July 23 in Tagaytay City.

Creating advocates for energy programs and initiatives, the Department of Energy (DOE) in partnership with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) gathered members of the media in CALABARZON for the E-Power Mo: Energy 101 held at the Hotel Dominique last Monday, 23 July.

Substantial reporting of energy-related issues requires at least a basic understanding of the industry. Thus, the seminar provided an overview of energy concepts, including the Department’s policies and programs.

“The reason we hold these forums is to broaden the awareness on the Department’s role in nation building, if not, to clarify the DOE’s role in the energy sector in order to correct any misconceptions about its capacity as a policy making body,” said Energy Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi in his keynote speech delivered by Undersecretary Felix William B. Fuentebella.

Usec. Fuentebella noted that the DOE values the role of the media as its partner in the dissemination of information about the Department’s policies and programs.

However, he pointed out that there are only a handful of economic writers and even fewer who specialize in energy concerns who could enlighten the public on crucial issues.

With the conduct of such seminars, the DOE hopes to narrow the understanding gap by simplifying energy-related technical terms for better and wider reader appreciation.

Among the topics discussed were energy efficiency and alternative fuels and technology, introduced by DOE Assistant Secretary Robert B. Uy and presented by Energy Utilization Management Bureau Director Jesus T. Tamang, the downstream oil industry explained by Director Rino E. Abad, and the power industry simplified by Usec. Fuentebella.

A total of 83 participants from print, radio and TV operating in region IV-A attended the seminar.

This event is part of the E-Power Mo movement, which continues to educate stakeholders and consumers alike for a more advantageous utilization of energy information.

The next Energy 101 for members of the media will be held on 15 August in Iloilo City. A session for the Mindanao media group will likewise be held on 16 October in Cagayan De Oro.
