(K-PLUS) will join with LoveYourself, Inc. in a nationwide human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing day on May 26 (Saturday) to address the increasing number of persons diagnosed with HIV in Mindanao.

Based on records from the Department of Health (DOH), it showed that about 70 new cases were recorded in Regions 10 and 11 combined, which is equivalent to eight percent of the total 912 newly diagnosed HIV cases in March 2018 alone.

The OSD and K-PLUS will bring LoveYourself’s “This is Me: Brave and Free” campaign – the first-ever community-based multi-city HIV testing to Davaoeños and Kagay-anons on Saturday from 11:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. To join, register atwww.bitly.com/ThisIsMe2018.

The OSD of Davao City will hold the HIV testing at #36 Loyola St., Bo. Obrero, Poblacion District while the K-Plus in Cagayan de Oro City will conduct the testing at Pearlmont Hotel, Limketkai Drive.

OSD Chairperson Oscar Obenza Jr. said their group started as a text-based clan in June 2014 and evolved into a beacon for gender-equality, addressing the stigma and discrimination on HIV.

“We will continue advocating the programs [i.e., HIV prevention] in line with the thrust and direction of the organization,” Obenza said.

The K-PLUS, on the other hand, was formed mid-2015 with an aim to represent the LGBT and the people living with HIV (PLHIV) communities, according to K-PLUS, Inc. Executive Director Enrique Niño Patricio.

“We are doing this for a CAUSE [HIV advocacy], and not for APPLAUSE,” Patricio emphasized.

Patricio urged Kagay-anons to be open-minded on HIV-related services to eliminate the stigma of HIV in Cagayan de Oro. He also encouraged the public to take advantage of the free government services such as HIV testing and treatment.

Smart Powers Sarangani Bay Festival

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Tourists and residents attending the Sarangani Bay Festival will enjoy much improved mobile data experience as PLDT wireless arm Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) boosts connectivity in the area in time for the province’s much-awaited event.

As part of its commitment to cover 90% of the country’s cities and municipalities with mobile data service by the end of this year, Smart has fired up LTE-Advanced and carrier aggregation technology in the province to improve the mobile internet experience of residents and tourists, especially those expected to attend the sporting and music events during the festival.

After LTE-A was rolled-out last month, residents have reported experiencing download speeds of over 40 Mbps in Gumasa, Sarangani Bay.

“With Smart’s LTE-A network now in place in Sarangani, attendees of the province’s biggest festival can stay connected to loved ones via messaging apps, share their experiences in real time via social media, or learn about new ways to protect and preserve marine life,” said Mario G. Tamayo, PLDT and Smart Senior Vice President for Network Planning and Engineering.

In the first quarter of 2018, Smart installed 1,300 more LTE base stations across the country, raising the total count to over 10,000 nationwide. These base stations use various radio frequency bands, specifically the 700 MHz band for better coverage and indoor penetration, and the 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz for additional capacity. Smart aims to increase the number of LTE base stations to about 17,700 by the end of 2018, and raise the number of LTE-equipped cell sites to over 6,800.

The installation of multiple LTE base stations in existing cell sites paves the way for the activation of LTE-A, which can deliver faster mobile data services to customers. Through LTE-A’s feature called carrier aggregation, much higher mobile data speeds are achieved by combining the capacity of two up to five frequency bands.

“By boosting connectivity in tourist havens like Sarangani, we hope to help local tourism flourish and open up more opportunities for other local businesses, who can now be at par with their counterparts outside of the province,” Tamayo added. “This is part of Smart’s commitment to deliver world-class internet service to more Filipinos in all corners of the country.”

Other summer hotspots recently connected by Smart LTE-A include Batanes, Sagada and Baguio, to name a few.

Parent company PLDT has committed historic levels of resources to support network transformation. Capital expenditures are expected to reach P58 billion this year.

In the past, Smart has also been supporting Sarangani’s environmental campaign that pushes for the responsible use and protection of the 230-kilometer Sarangani bay, which is home to diverse marine life. Sarangani is popular for its bangus and tuna.

Now on its 11th year, the Sarangani Bay Festival is mounted by the Department of Tourism and the local government of Sarangani and will feature various sports competitions, fitness activities, environmental advocacies, nightly shows, concerts and a music festival.

Traveling Tips for Interacting with a Different Culture

Wazzup Pilipinas!

A change is as good as a rest, as the saying goes, and traveling abroad to experience different cultures the world has to offer is crucial to broadening one's worldview and picking up some timeless memories along the way. It's always important, though, to be mindful of the cultures of the places you're going to be visiting, so if you're not going to blend in, you can still find ways of navigating them in a sensitive and respectful manner. There are a few things to think about here that you can apply as guidelines in a general manner to anyway going to be visiting.

Language

You don't have to do sound like a native speaker when you're in a foreign country, but it always pays to try your best and make the effort to pick up, if nothing else, at least some basic phrases. "Please" and "thank you" should be the first words you learn, and use them liberally in customer service interactions and with anyone who helps you out. Also try and learn how to order food and asked for basic directions. Sometimes it's not even that important that you speak the language fluently or have a wide vocabulary to speak with. What is important, is that people will see that you're making the effort to try to adapt to their country, which they will often respond with enthusiasm and interest to in and of itself.

Etiquette

Do some research about the cultural mores and local customs and area before you go. Learn whether people speak to each other in a casual or formal context, especially if they just met or are interacting with you in the capacity of say a restaurant. From there, you can start finding out the details of the particular style of etiquette expected in different situations and country. For example, find out what the local customs are as far as tipping taxi drivers and waiters go, and the amounts appropriate. Also, be sure to be aware in plenty of situations how your behavior may reflect back on those around you. For example, if someone has taken you into their home and is feeding you a meal, be sure to finish what's on the plate and let them know that you enjoy the food. If someone offers you second helpings try and accept them so as not to cause offense, and if you don't like some of the food get your head down and try to eat it anyway.

Clothing

Obviously you shouldn't wear clothes that will be too offensive or shocking to a culture abroad when you go there. Dressing like a punk rocker or gangster rapper is obviously not a good idea and will make you stand out the wrong reasons, and potentially be seen as insensitive. Unfortunately, women will have to be more rigorously aware of the standards of clothing seen as acceptable in the places they going to particularly in areas such as the Middle East, as having too much exposed flesh or hair can be seen as particularly offensive. Bear in mind as well, if you're going into place of worship or shrine you made expected to dress differently, take off your shoes, and observe other particular religious customs. If you have wealth, don't flaunt that either. Wearing a Rolex, for example, can be seen showing off and as much as anything else make you more attractive to the local criminal element and draw unwanted attention from their own quarters. For the most part, exercising common sense wherever possible and not throwing your weight around, whilst showing enthusiasm for the locals and a desire to learn about the culture will normally be enough to steer you okay in most situations. For everything else do some research, figure out the local do's and don'ts and if you have a question never be afraid to ask it.

Ice Seguerra Releases New Single Anghel sa Lupa Under Universal Records

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Multi-platinum recording artist Ice Seguerra (artist formerly known as artist Aiza Seguerra) is back with "Anghel Sa Lupa," his first single after the release of Gold certified album "Araw Gabi: Mga Awit ni Maestro Ryan" in 2015.

Ice rose to prominence being a former child star, appearing in over thirty films since his debut in Vic Sotto's Okey Ka Fairy Ko. From there, he has become one of the country's most respected singer-songwriters, with hits such as 'Pagdating Ng Panahon" and "Pakisabi Na Lang," among many others.

Known for his more "hugot" and melodramatic songs, Ice changes pace with this new single, a fresh acoustic tune that perfectly encapsulates the inexplicable feeling of being in love with someone. Though it gives more of a light-hearted feel than his previous songs, Ice still manages to deliver his signature vocals prominent in his well-loved body of work.

The feel-good song will be a pleasant surprise for those yearning to hear more from the certified hitmaker, and will once again capture the hearts of many, including a younger audience. “Anghel Sa Lupa” is now available on iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, Deezer and Amazon.

Ice will return with more singles, and a full-length album to be released sometime in 2018 under Universal Records.

JDA Day 2018: Philippine Retail Industry Needs to Accelerate Digital Supply Chain Transformations

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Surprised to find out that the Philippines rank among the lowest to embrace digital solutions for the retail industry.

However, the good news is that the country is in a condition where it could rapidly catch up if given a nice "kick in the butt" to motivate these businesses towards the right direction.

But when JDA Software, through a media gathering held at Solaire Resorts and Casino Manila on May 23, 2018, showed us a list of their clients, seeing the huge companies doing retail business somehow answered the enigma.

Why? Because just like the entry of a third player in the telco industry where the existing duopoly is said to be the real reason why more players hesitate or could not successfully penetrate the country, to adapt digital or online retail solutions successfully could very well put an end to the huge malls or stores in the country.

Though JDA Software beg to disagree because they say that digital transformations could be beneficial to even the mall-operating business giants, that would probably be only at the initial stages. When Filipinos become comfortable using digital or online solutions, we won't be going to the malls anymore.

But that scenario is still nothing but a speculation. Businesses evolve since they have the funds to reinvent themselves, or put out a better image, to make themselves in demand again.

My children's lifestyle revolves around online shopping. They would prefer to transact online rather than go to the malls and subject themselves to the long queues and traffic congestion, among other things. Thus, I do believe that the next generations will push the demand for digital or online solutions for retail, and as a whole since online is the now and the future.

Lee Gill, Group Vice President of JDA Software

Amit Bagga, President APAC JDA Software

John Boe, Senior Consulting Director of Genie Technologies

Gan Eng-Teck of Dematic

Companies across retail, manufacturing and distribution are now looking at avenues to improve their supply chain efficiencies that will help result in inventory that is more aligned to their sales investment and effective forecasting and replenishment approaches.

“The paradigm shift in supply chain and its impact on the bottom line has pushed it to becoming a boardroom agenda in Philippine market. We see a significant increase in the interest from retailers, manufacturers and distributors here who are keen in engaging with JDA as we are the only one-stop, best-of-breed solution for all their supply chain planning and execution needs,” said Dhawan.

Cusi: We Have Mitigating Measures to Deal with the Oil Situation

Wazzup Pilipinas!

SPOT CHECK: The DOE Oil Industry Management Bureau (OIMB) has lined up 13 gasoline stations in Mandaluyong and Pasig for inspection of fuel quality and quantity. Collecting the fuel samples is OIMB Senior Science Research Specialist Lovely T.  Miranda. The OIMB has intensified this regular activity amid the current oil situation.

Acting on a directive from Energy Secretary Alfonso G.  Cusi, the Department of Energy-Oil Industry Management Bureau (DOE-OIMB) today (23 May) intensified its series of random inspections of fuel stations to ensure quality and quantity of petroleum products amid the current oil situation.

Scaling up such regular activity, the OIMB chose around 13 gas stations along Shaw Boulevard traversing the cities of Mandaluyong and Pasig for fuel quality and quantity inspection.

“This bold move aims to ensure that consumers are protected despite the increasing oil prices with oil companies delivering the best quality and right quantity of fuel products,” Cusi said.

In a meeting with oil companies on Tuesday, Cusi asked oil industry stakeholders to devise measures to address the adverse impact of higher oil prices.

“We are here to help one another find ways to cushion the effect of the oil situation, and ensure the utmost protection of our consumers despite the geopolitical factors abroad that we cannot control affecting the world oil market,” Cusi emphasized.

As agreed in the said meeting, oil companies have expressed willingness to give discounts and widen their CSR programs to support the transport sector and even the marginalized, which will be formalized through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the DOE. At present, PUVs avail of a PhP1.00/liter discount under an existing MOA between the DOE and only three oil firms.

The DOE is closely coordinating with the Department of Finance to discuss new measures concerning the excise tax and value-added tax on oil as a result of the implementation of the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) Law.

The DOE will also be working with the Department of Transportation for the swift implementation of Section 82 of the TRAIN Law on fuel vouchers for Public Utility Vehicles (PUVs), and pursue the Department’s efforts to expedite the unbundling of fuel prices.

The current increase in the price of oil has been brought about by recent international geopolitical developments, which include US oil sanctions on Iran, the drop in OPEC production levels and the political changes unfolding in Venezuela.

Based on International Energy Agency (IEA) reports and Mean of Platts Singapore (MOPS) trends, oil supply and demand in the short and medium term is expected to reach US$80 per barrel.
