Cusi Assures Ample Energy Supply for May 14 Polls

Wazzup Pilipinas!

"We have enough energy supply for the synchronized Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections on 14 May."

Energy Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi gave this assurance as the Department of Energy (DOE) on Friday (4 May 2018) convened the Task Force on Energy Resiliency (TFER) to discuss plans to deal with the possible contingencies during the local elections.

Members of the TFER include the DOE, National Electrification Administration, National Power Corporation, National Transmission Corporation, National Grid Corporation of the Philippines, Philippine National Oil Company and Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corporation.

The TFER also invited to  the meeting the national security group which included the National Security Council, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection and the Philippine Coast Guard.

DOE Undersecretary Jesus Cristino P. Posadas emphasized that “adequate and uninterrupted supply of energy is a very crucial function of the government during the election period.”

“As this is a national concern, the DOE, together with the members of the Task Force on Energy Resiliency, fully supports the Duterte Administration in achieving its goal to hold free, orderly, honest, peaceful and credible elections,” Posadas said.

Posadas added that close coordination among concerned government agencies is needed to implement the measures to minimize, if not prevent, any disruptions when Filipinos cast their votes on 14 May.

The DOE will issue a Department Circular that will create an Energy Task Force composed of the energy family, stakeholders and the security group to ensure adequate and reliable energy supply for the polls.

On Monday, May 7, the Energy Team will also attend the Commission on Elections’ command conference with various national government agencies in preparation for the political exercise.

Winning in Jakarta Will Be the Perfect Birthday Gift for Filipino Veteran Eric Kelly

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Considered as one of the most successful products of the established Philippine mixed martial art scene, Filipino veteran Eric “The Natural” Kelly celebrated his 36th birthday last April 30.
However, Kelly was not able to savor every bit of his special day as he is focused on his next assignment inside the ONE Championship cage.
The celebrated Baguio City-based mixed martial artist is set to duke it out with Japanese journeyman Tetsuya Yamada in a three-round catchweight contest on the undercard of ONE: GRIT AND GLORY, which takes place at the Jakarta Convention Center in Indonesia on May 12.
Although his cage meeting with Yamada is 12 days after his birthday, Kelly can't think of a better present for himself than to return home with the victory over the seasoned Japanese combatant.
"It will be a great birthday present for me to get the win. It's an added motivation going into the bout against an experienced martial artist like Tetsuya Yamada on May 12," he said. “I really want to go back home as the winner.”
Kelly was once considered as one of the best and brightest featherweight contenders in the Asian region when he started his professional mixed martial arts run in 2009, but his billing lost its luster due to a string of setbacks.
When Kelly entered enemy territory to face Malaysian-Kiwi dynamo Ev “E.T.” Ting in January 2016, he suffered a third-round submission defeat at the hands of the future ONE Lightweight World Championship title contender.
Kelly tried to bounce back from his loss to Ting by squaring off with former ONE Featherweight World Champion Narantungalag Jadambaa seven months later, but he yielded to the Mongolian hard-hitter by way of knockout in 44 seconds.
To compound the misery, he suffered his third-straight defeat at the hands of ex-ONE Lightweight World Champion Kotetsu “No Face” Boku in a featherweight encounter via third-round technical knockout in August 2017.
A victory inside the ONE Championship cage remained elusive to Kelly as he bowed down to returning Brazilian standout Rafael “Indio” Nunes by second-round submission this past January.
“I am taking it as a lesson. I have accepted the fact that I am in a bad spot, but I am taking all those experiences as lessons and inspecting them for my future matches,” Kelly stated.
Despite the series of losses, his confidence remains unfazed as he brings a indomitable and positive attitude into his upcoming bout against Yamada at ONE: GRIT AND GLORY.
“I want to show to those who believe in me that I can make it not just for myself, but for all,” he pointed out. “I want this victory so bad.”
The man standing in Kelly’s path to re-enter the winner’s circle is Yamada, a promising young martial artist with a distinct ability to seek out highlight-reel stoppages.
The 27-year-old native of Kanagawa, Japan made his ONE Championship debut in January 2016 in an extremely high-level wrestling showdown against future lightweight kingpin Eduard Folayang of the Philippines.
A seasoned grappler, over half of Yamada’s 24 career victories have come by spectacular finish, with the ability to end bouts either by submission or knockout.
Like Kelly, Yamada also seeks to get back on the winning track, following his third-round submission loss to Saygid Guseyn Arslanaliev last March.
“We can’t avoid setbacks. It’s mixed martial arts. This sport is unpredictable,” Kelly explained. “But I am still hungry. I still have the heart to compete.”
The last time that Kelly had his hand raised in triumph was when he outpointed Japan’s Hiroshige Tanaka by unanimous decision in October 2015.
Although a tough task is in front of him at ONE: GRIT AND GLORY, Kelly is more fired up than ever to arrest his losing spell and claim his first cage victory in nearly three years.
“It’s a good match-up for me. My opponent is no pushover because Yamada has a good ground game and a decent stand-up. I really want to get this win more than ever. No one can deny my eagerness to win,” he concluded.

One PH Team Still Standing in FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Manila Open

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Sisi Rondina and Dzi Gervacio became the last Filipina pair standing in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Manila Open following a 21-17, 21-17 conquest of Canada's Caleigh Cruickshank and Megan Nagy in the round-of-12 yesterday at the Sands SM By The Bay.

With modest expectations of playing well against international, battle-tested sand court veterans, Gervacio was satisfied things went with her maiden partnership with Rondina in the one-star tournament.

"Ako, hindi ko talaga inii-expect na malayo ang mararating namin. Na aabot kami ng Day 2," said Gervacio, one of Beach Volleyball Republic’s co-founders. "Kasi, ako personally, I haven't trained internationally. And I know for a fact na matatangkad ang kalaban natin. But from the get-go, noong nakalaban namin ang USA, alam ko may pag-asa tayo."

Rondina and Gervacio compensated for the size disadvantage with solid defense in the sand and by playing smart.

It was Rondina and Gervacio's second win in the one-star tournament following last Friday's 21-12, 21-16 conquest of the United States' Lindsey Fuller and Kaley Melville at the women's main draw opener.

Also, the duo somehow avenged the loss of their fellow Filipina bets Charo Soriano and Bea Tan to their Canadian opponents, 12-21, 15-21, in the losers' bracket Friday that eliminated them in the tournament.

Earlier, the Philippines' other remaining hope, Lot Catubag and Karen Quilario of the PNP, bowed out after a heartbreaking 34-36, 23-25, 15-17 loss to Thailand's Thatsarida Singchuea and Pawarun Chanthawichai.

Catubag and Quilario were in match point late in the second frame and twice in the deciding set, but the pair from Tagum could not close out against the young Thai duo, the newly-minted Asian U19 beach volleyball champions.

"More teamwork and more practice," said Quilario after the match.

After Thailand went at match point, the Philippines needed a medical timeout as Catubag went down with cramps. She eventually returned to the sand, but the Thais were able to complete the kill in the tournament's most exciting match that sent every set to extension.

If given the chance to play more FIVB World Tour events outside the country, the reigning two-time Beach Volleyball Republic national champions are willing to join to gain more experience.

"Gusto naming maglaro kahit saan para exposure na rin," said Quilario.

"Kung bibigyan kami ng pagkakataon, iga-grab namin ang opportunity na maglaro ng ganitong level. Maraming gustong maglaro pero bihira lang ang magbigyan ng pagkakataon sa ganitong competition," said Catubag.

In other round of 12 matches, Germany's Lisa-Sophie Kotzan and Leonie Klinke prevailed over The Netherlands Katja Stam and Lisa Wouters, 21-11, 21-19, while the United States' Lindsey Fuller and Kaley Melville beat Norway's Janne Pedersen and Hanne Zylstra, 21-15, 21-17.

Men's round-of-12 action saw Spain's Javier and Alejandro Huerta upset Martin Appelgren and Simon Boman of top-seed Sweden, 24-22, 21-15, to make it to the quarters.

Felix Friedl and Maximillian Trummer defeated Jorg Wutzl and Simon Fruhbauer, in an all-Austrian duel, 23-21, 21-19, Russia's Petr Bakhnar and Taras Myskivsurge past Chinese Taipei Wang Chin-Ju and Hsieh Ya-Jen, 21-14, 21-8, while Australia's Marcus Fegurson and Tom Dickson swept Hong Kong's Kevib Lau Tsz Ho and Wong Pui Lam, 21-15, 21-15.

The event is promoted by E-Plus Global Sdn Bhd and organized by Beach Volleyball Republic Inc.

2 Police Officers Apprehended during Anti-Colorum Operations

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Two police officers were apprehended for driving colorum vehicles during a recent anti-colorum operation conducted last April 26, Thursday, in Paranaque and Pasay City.

Philippine National Police (PNP) officers Police Chief Inspector Juan Saldua Cipriano Jr. of the Southern Police District, and SPO4 Ronnie Arimbuyutan Druja of the PNP Aviation Security Group, were caught driving unmarked vehicles disguised as passenger vans. Apart from driving colorum vehicles, the vans were also marked with stickers from the Office of the President.

Both officers are confirmed to be in active service.

Department of Transportation Secretary Arthur P. Tugade expressed his dismay over the incident, while reassuring the public that anti-colorum operations will continue.

“Nakakalungkot na kung sino pa iyong mga dapat nagpapatupad ng batas ay sila pa ang mismong lumalabag. Akalain mo, imbes na protektahan ang mga tao gaya ng sinumpaan nila, lalo pa nilang nilalagay sa alanganin ang buhay ng mga pasahero dahil sa pag-drive ng colorum. Mismong si Pangulong Duterte na ang nagsabi na alisin ang colorum sa kalsada, at ‘yan ang gagawin natin,” said Tugade.

DOTr Undersecretary for Road Transport and Inter-Agency Council for Traffic (I-ACT) Chairman Tim Orbos has already reported the incident to PNP Chief Oscar Albayalde for appropriate sanctions.

“The apprehension of police officers who were moonlighting as drivers of colorum vans is truly unfortunate. They are supposed to be our partners in the anti-colorum effort, but they are the ones violating it,” Orbos lamented.

Both vehicles have been impounded by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

Joint operations by the I-ACT and LTFRB led to the apprehension of the police officers, along with 57 motorists apprehended for smoke belching, 35 for violating the “Tanggal Bulok, Tanggal Usok” campaign, and six other colorum vehicles that were impounded by the LTFRB.

The number of violators caught is the highest number recorded in a single day of operations.
