Maintaining 100 Percent Finishing Rate is Christian Lee’s Top Priority

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Ever since making his professional debut under the ONE Championship banner in December 2015, Christian “Warrior” Lee is nothing short but spectacular as his impressive skillset boasts unorthodox and unpredictable striking techniques, as well as technical grappling and creative submission maneuvers.
After nine matches inside the ONE Championship cage, Lee developed a reputation as a proven finisher, owning five knockout victories and three submission wins.
In his last outing, Lee tied the record for most finishes in the promotion’s history, pulling off a highlight-reel knockout of former ONE Lightweight World Champion Kotetsu Boku this past December.
Lee draws another Japanese icon in his next assignment as he squares off with with two-division former DEEP champion Kazunori Yokota on the undercard of ONE: VISIONS OF VICTORY, which takes place at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 9 March.
The 19-year-old Singaporean prospect hopes to secure his fourth straight win, all while also adding another big name to his ever-expanding rƩsumƩ.
“I think Kazunori Yokota is a great match-up. He is a seasoned veteran, similar to Boku. I feel he is actually very similar to Boku,” Lee stated.
“He is not as threatening when you look at his record on paper, but he is fast, he is explosive, and I know when we get in there, he is going to be looking to take me out. I am not looking past him in any way, so I am going to go in there and take him out in the same fashion I did Boku,” he assessed of his opponent.
Lee admitted that taking the match with Yokota was a dangerous proposition, considering he feels that he is already close to a world title shot.
However, it is not how Lee wants to approach his career because he believes that through great risk comes an even greater reward.
“A lot of other athletes would not have even taken this bout,” he said. “I could have sat and waited, and the title shot could have been mine. But that is just not the type of person I am. I am not going to just sit and wait for something to come. When they offered me Kazunori Yokota, I took it in a heartbeat.”
According to Lee, each contest also allows him to gain even more experience inside the cage, which is something he values even more after suffering the first and only blemish of his career in a crushing defeat to current ONE Featherweight and Lightweight World Champion Martin Nguyen in August 2016.
“I feel the biggest thing that I took away from that loss, it was a mental thing,” he explained. “It was my sixth bout in, and I just turned 18 years old. I am only 19 years old now, but I feel years and years ahead, experience-wise, just coming off that loss.
“Just being able to step back and look at things from a different perspective, I really see in that bout I let emotions come into play. There is really no room for emotions in a contest. It is strictly business. Since then, I have been able to implement that into all of my bouts,” Lee added.
Although a decisive triumph could seal the deal for Lee as the next contender for the ONE Featherweight World Championship, he is keeping his eyes on getting his hand raised as maintaining his 100 percent finishing rate appears to be at the top of his list.
“You can show just how good you are when people know exactly what you are going to do, but they still cannot stop you from doing it. My thinking is if you want to be the best in the world, you are going to have to take out everyone anyway. So whoever they throw at you, you have to be prepared to face them and beat them,” he concluded.

More Than 100+ Int’l Youth Groups Join Resolution Condemning Duterte, Trump and Other Dictators

Wazzup Pilipinas!

More than 100 youth groups from around the globe condemned Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, US President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and other authoritarian leaders and political parties during the world congress of the International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY) on February 15-18, 2018.

This comes amidst the barrage of criticisms the Duterte administration received over his strongman policies with the Amnesty International Report released on February 22 which stressed the spate of "lawlessness and violence" in the Philippines.

The US intelligence community also tagged the Duterte administration as a ‘threat to democracy’ on the World Threat Assessment Report released on February 21.

In a manifesto presented during the congress in Montenegro, the youth groups slammed the global rise of populism, fundamentalism, fascism, and the far right. The youth groups called for an international campaign to resist the “politics of hate, violence, disempowerment, and intolerance.”

Akbayan Youth, a democratic socialist youth organization from the Philippines, led the passage of the manifesto during the gathering of international youth activists. In his presentation speech for the manifesto, Akbayan Youth Chair JC Tejano condemned President Duterte’s war on drugs which has killed more than 20,000 Filipinos.

“Today, [Rodrigo Duterte] is set to transform our government into a dictatorship with martial law, suppression of dissent, and constitutional change. We now know that the Philippines is not an isolated case. Mr. Duterte’s rise to power was only a part of a global tide – a global siege of populism, fundamentalism, fascism, and the far right in Asia, America, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa,” Tejano said.

The manifesto condemned President Trump for his policies against migrant workers and sexist remarks. It also slammed President Xi for the building of Chinese military bases in the West Philippine Sea and the arrest of pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong.

The manifesto likewise lamented the rise of far-right movements in European Union member states, such as the National Front in France, the Alternative for Deutschland in Germany, the Freedom Party in Austria, and the CasaPound and Brothers in Italy.

Other heads of state like State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar and President Vladimir Putin of Russiawere also cited in the manifesto for their controversial human rights records.

Meanwhile, the youth groups slammed the rise of ISIS fundamentalism that has spurred religious violence in Africa and the Middle East.

IUSY is the largest political youth organization in the world, with member organizations from over 100 countries. IUSY was founded in 1907.

hirna: Davao's Homegrown Taxi App Eyes Nationwide Expansion

Wazzup Pilipinas!

hirna, Davao's homegrown taxi hailing app is eyeing nationwide expansion in the coming months.

The app made a buzz when it unveiled during its media launch last December 2017 at the Davao City Hall with no less than Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio herself.

Joining the fray of the heating ride-hailing competition in the country, hirna set itself apart from other apps with its zero-booking fee service that uses the most number of fleets of taxis in Davao because of their exclusive partnership with the Metro Davao Taxi Operators Association (MEDATOA). There are an initial 2,000 taxis currently under hirna, ensuring the shortest waiting time possible.

“What hirna brings commuters is a premium app with zero booking fees, no turn-downs, and no price surges. While ensuring convenience and security, our app also helps drivers because we don’t have transaction fees that sometimes eat up much of their revenues," said Francisco Coco Mauricio, hirna President & CEO.

Atty. Rogelio Largo, President of MEDATOA, said hirna should be the preferred app of Dabawanyos because aside from its many features, it was proudly conceptualized in Davao. He also said that “hirna is the only app with a 24/7 customer service support to answer queries and to help passengers without smart phones book a ride. It even has the LTFRB hotline numbers in the app so passengers are free to contact the agency for any questions, suggestions or comments".

Mayor Duterte-Carpio is supporting hirna because it provides a real and effective solution to traffic congestion. Since the hirna application increases the utilization of the existing fleet of taxis in Davao, there are no additional cars placed on the road thus effectively reducing traffic and helping minimize carbon emission.

As hirna gears up for a nationwide expansion, more people would be able to enjoy the benefits that hirna offers commuters. "Today Davao, tomorrow the Philippines," said Mauricio.

Between now and the end of March, those who will download and use the hirna app will be recognized as hirna co-founders. hirna co-founders will be entitled to a host of benefits and privileges such as priority bookings and exclusive events and promotions.

The hirna app can be downloaded from both iOS App Store and Google Playstore. For any queries, the customer hotline numbers are 09171114888 and 09992214888.

The largest global sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), had another memorable and historic evening in Yangon as the capacity crowd at the Thuwunna Indoor Stadium witnessed an amazing display of heart-pounding martial arts action. ONE: QUEST FOR GOLD featured a series of compelling bouts, punctuated by an unforgettable championship clash that left fans on the edge of their seats. In the main event of ONE: QUEST FOR GOLD, “The Burmese Python” Aung La N Sang added yet another accolade to his glowing repertoire of awards as a global martial arts superstar, copping the vacant ONE Light Heavyweight World Championship with a knockout victory over Brazil’s Alexandre Machado. Aung La N Sang got the job done in just 56 seconds, knocking out Machado with a thunderous high kick. With his remarkable conquest of Machado, Aung La N Sang now has both the ONE Middleweight World Championship and ONE Light Heavyweight World Championship titles in his possession.

Aung La N Sang, newly-minted ONE Light Heavyweight Champion, stated: “Life is short, we have to make it count. One thing is for sure Myanmar, when we’re united, nothing can stop us. That head kick is what we’ve been working on. I want to thank everyone that helped me out to get here. I’m in here by myself, but this is a team sport. If we’re united and we’re together, we can do anything. I want to be the best and I want to defend these two belts. I’m not just going to hold them and leave.”

In the co-main event of the evening, former world title challenger Ev “E.T.” Ting turned in an outstanding performance by routing Costa Rican martial artist Ariel Sexton, solidifying his position once again as a top contender in ONE Championship’s stacked lightweight division. Opening up the three-round contest by taking the action right to Sexton, Ting connected on a series of fast and powerful strikes, pushing his opponent back up against the cage. In the second round, Ting continued to blast Sexton with serious firepower, featuring his best striking combinations. Sexton tried to change the complexion of the bout in the third round, fishing for a finish with a flying knee and a submission attempt. Ting did just enough to pull away slightly in the third after a gruelling match, and came out victorious via split decision.

Local martial arts superstar Phoe “Bushido” Thaw turned in a spectacular performance, stopping Cambodian opponent Sor Sey with an emphatic push kick to the face in the very first round. Thaw, a lethwei practitioner, traded explosive strikes with Sor, a khun khmer specialist, right at the center of the cage. When a left hand staggered Sor along the fence, Thaw capitalized on the opening and abruptly ended matters with his next kick. The official finish came at 1:53 minutes of round one, sending the packed Yangon crowd at the Thuwunna Indoor Stadium into a frenzy.

In a much-awaited encounter of ONE Championship’s highly-skilled knockout artists, Timofey Nastyukhin emerged triumphant, claiming a unanimous decision victory over Singaporean Muay Thai champion Amir Khan. Nastyukhin exhibited stellar form from the get-go, bombarding Khan with strong overhand rights while looking for the opening to deliver his lethal left hook. Leaning on his heavy hands to overwhelm Khan’s precision striking, Nastykuhin gallantly pushed forward as he threatened to end matters with a flying knee and stifled his opponent with harrowing punches. Nastyukhin punctuated the marquee match-up by outstriking Khan in the third frame, earning an undivided nod from all three judges at cageside.

The highly-anticipated bantamweight contest between Japan’s Daichi Takenaka and South Korea’s Dae Hwan Kim ended in a disqualification. After Takenaka took Kim’s back in a standing body triangle, securing a rear naked choke, Kim reacted by spiking Takenaka on his head, which is a prohibited maneuver. The match resulted in a victory for Takenaka, who wins by disqualification.

In an intense striking showcase, Myanmar’s Ye Thway Ne and Saw Min Min, two former lethwei practitioners, battled each other in a tremendous three-round war to the delight of a raucous crowd enjoying all the action. The two traded their best offense at the center of the ONE Championship cage for 15 minutes in one of the most exciting striking battles of the evening. In the end, it was two-time Gold Belt Champion Ye Thway Ne who scored the hard-earned victory, winning by split decision by keeping Saw Min Min on the defensive for the majority of the contest.

Chinese martial arts ace Li Kai Wen placed himself back on the winning track in emphatic fashion, submitting promotional newcomer Roel Rosauro of the Philippines in just 43 seconds. In an impressive display of ferociousness, Li tagged Rosauro repeatedly with thudding strikes, which eventually sent Rosauro crashing to the canvas. As Rosauro struggled to return to his feet, Li quickly secured dominant top position to wrench his Filipino foe’s neck with a guillotine choke, snaring his first submission victory inside the ONE Championship cage.

Indonesian wushu champion Priscilla Hertati Lumban Gaol impressed the crowd with a modified armbar submission of Krisna Limbaga in a female atomweight contest. After taking Limbaga down to the ground and keeping her opponent ineffective on the mat, Lumban Gaol used her legs to execute a straight armbar that forced the tap with less than a minute to go in the first round.

Kicking off ONE: QUEST FOR GOLD were female atomweights from Myanmar. Former two-time Myanmar National Boxing Champion Bozhena Antoniyar made quick work of opponent Shwe Sin in a great performance to start her ONE Championship career. At the opening bell, Antoniyar wasted no time in bringing Sin down to the mat swiftly and finished things off with ground-and-pound to score the fastest knockout in ONE women’s atomweight history.
