Realizing the Economic, Environmental Benefits of Using Green ICT

Fujitsu PH promotes environmental conservation through energy-saving ICT products, services

Over the years, information communication technology (ICT) has been considered by business enterprises as a tool to reduce costs and optimize operations. However, with the increasing global environmental concerns, particularly the adverse effects of climate change, enterprises are now leaning towards adopting green ICT. Even if you use traditional means, it is important to compare business energy to find the most suitable deals.

According to Raul “Cricket” Santiago, president and CEO of Fujitsu Philippines, this trend is driven by the demand for effective and efficient use of energy. Green ICT is necessary to lessen power consumption, reduce resource usage, reinforce product recycling, and eliminate hazardous substances.

“The ICT industry remains as one of the contributors to global warming. With this adverse impact, enterprises are now urged to take on steps to mitigate the effects to the environment. The challenge now, however, is for the distributors of ICT to extend greener products and services,” added Santiago.

According to a research firm, Gartner, Global ICT industry accounts for approximately two percent of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. This is caused by the wide use of ICT products and services to run specific business operations. ICT products include not only desktop computers, printers, as well as databases, among others but also encompasses the data centers as well as the equipment and servers in them.

The impact of ICT equipment to the environment is manifested on how the materials are being manufactured, used, and disposed of. It is ideal that energy consumption is expended efficiently from production, transport to the consumers, until the time that it is being used. Meanwhile, improper disposal at the end of their lifetime may also add to the pollution.

To ensure that it aids in addressing the said issue, Fujitsu has made society and the environment as the center of its management philosophy. At the heart of environmental care is the attitude that environmentally-conscious product development begins at the initial design phase. It brings together small technologies which lead to big power savings and energy conservation.

For instance, the company designs all of their product’s parts in a way that it can be easy to recycle. Fujitsu fortifies its recycling capabilities to advance the collection and reuse of resources in its products. In terms of eliminating hazardous substances, Fujitsu not only complies with relevant regulations, but it also defines its own stringent rules to eliminate hazardous substances from products.

To maximize effectiveness and minimize costs, it is also important to choose ICT products offering strong environmental performance. However, attention must also be paid to the facilities housing such equipment. Fujitsu provides optical fiber temperature measurement systems for large-scale server rooms and data centers. It also markets green facility solutions for server rooms and Facility CUBEs for offices, stores, hospitals and many other facilities. The company's ever-evolving products and services save energy, space, and costs in any environment.

In terms of manufacturing, Fujitsu also works to not only reduce electrical consumption but also, gas and crude oil. Reducing chemicals and waste materials, and promoting recycling with organic materials have contributed to zero emissions.

Fujitsu also adopts power-saving and energy-conserving technologies to improve equipment performance and processing speed, manage systems efficiently, and reduce loss and CO2 emissions.

“The concept of Green ICT is at the heart of every products and services of Fujitsu. By doing so, we are encouraging the enterprises in the country to shift to a much greener and sustainable systems for their business processes,” Santiago further said.

Of Reversals and Revisitings

ARCHIVO 1984 Gallery is proud to present RECTO/VERSO: New Collages and Paintings by Gerardo Tan opening on Friday, June 2, 2017 at Archivo 1984 Gallery.

Visual artist Gerardo Tan extends his continuing exploration of collage-based paintings in this solo exhibition of recent works. Comprised of small collages on paper and their translations into larger canvases, the works dwells on the reflexive materiality of things: transforming archival fragments into art objects and, conversely, repositioning art objects as itinerant archives.

The terms “Recto/Verso” denote the front (recto) and the reverse or underside (verso) of bound materials and art objects identified for conservation treatment. The tension between the two words lies in the dual relationship of forward and backward orientation. Implied in this are constantly shifting states of appearance and concealment: one can not view a side without moving away from the other, making the act and position of viewing a single object always a multifaceted process.

The entire series begins with the collages, which were constructed using materials such as pages from art books, texts, and posters. Tan makes extensive use of billboards and posters plastered across various public spaces in Berlin. Like collages, the city’s walls are weighed with this history of overlapping images and fragmented signs, fused into a singular mass through time and chance.

Geje Eustaquio Satisfied with Result of Rematch Against Thai Rival

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Although Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio already knew that he was on the verge of having his hand raised in triumph, the Filipino fighter was expecting a different result on the judges’ scorecards.

Eustaquio, who edged out Thai rival Anatpong “Mak” Bunrad on the undercard of ONE: DYNASTY OF HEROES in Singapore on Friday, May 26 via split verdict, thought that he did enough to get a unanimous decision from the three officials at cageside.

“I was surprised with the three judges’ decision. I was expecting a unanimous decision win against my opponent. But I am good with it. I respect it,” he said.

The 28-year-old native of Baguio City, Benguet felt that he started to dictate the pace of the three-round flyweight rematch in the second stanza, displaying superb footwork and frustrating the physically stronger Thai combatant with crisp counterpunches.

“Rounds Two and Three, I knew it’s all mine because I was landing my strikes. I was consistent with that. My work rate was much better this time around as well,” he stated.

Eustaquio bucked a slow start in the opening round when the rangy Bunrad came out strong in an effort to intimidate the Team Lakay representative.

Foolproof Features to Look for in a Laptop

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Compact yet versatile enough to handle day-to-day applications, a laptop is the best tool for working, studying, browsing the Internet, watching movies, or playing games on the go. Though tablets and smartphones are smaller in size, most don’t want to trade off a laptop’s longer battery life, robust features, and the solid feeling of an actual keyboard.

While major brands like to highlight all the different and new technical features in their laptops – from the buzzwords about processors, types of storage, graphics capabilities, and screen resolution – Lenovo will cut to the chase in this buying guide and highlight the essential features that we think an everyday laptop should have.

Long battery life

Battery life is one of the most important considerations for many laptop shoppers. With an empty battery, your laptop is nothing but an expensive paper weight. On average, most laptops can be used for 4 to 6 hours on a single charge.

With Lenovo’s Power Bridge battery technology, certain Lenovo laptops can deliver up to 13.9 hours of use on a single charge. The external battery packs a charge of 7 hours while the internal Power Bridge battery adds another 6.9 hours of surfing, streaming, gaming, and more.

If you have a spare battery that is hot-swappable, this means you can use your laptop for more than 13.9 hours without ever turning it off.

A fast processor

Your laptop's processor is like its brain. Working in combination with system memory, the power of the processor determines the complexity of software you can run, how many programs you can open at the same time, and how fast those programs will run.

Intel, the world’s most popular processor, recently launched their 7th generation “Kaby Lake” processors. Kaby Lake’s Hyper-Threading feature lets users more efficiently do performance-heavy tasks such as 3D and video rendering. To the delight of movie buffs, its upgraded graphics core can also stream videos in beautiful and crisp 4K quality.
