Launch of the ASEAN Data Science Explorers Competition

Wazzup Pilipinas!

To mark the historical milestone of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) turning 50, the ASEAN Foundation is working with strategic partners to establish several new initiatives centered around building a sense of ASEAN identity. The first of which is the “ASEAN Data Science Explorers” (ASEAN DSE), a regional competition jointly organised with SAP, the market leader in enterprise application software.

Targeting tertiary students across all 10 ASEAN member states from any discipline, this data analytics competition aims to enhance awareness and appreciation of the ASEAN community amongst ASEAN youths. Titled “Today’s Youth for Tomorrow’s World”, this competition will allow all ASEAN youths to play a key role in tackling today’s social issues facing the region and help create positive change for a better future.

By using the SAP BusinessObjects Cloud tool, the initiative encourages participants to deliver data-driven insights which highlight issues in ASEAN across six United Nation Sustainable Development Goals, namely (1) good health and well-being, (2) quality education, (3) gender equality, (4) clean water and sanitation, (5) decent work and economic growth, and (6) sustainable cities and communities. This will also work towards realising the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Blueprint 2025 vision of creating an ASEAN community that engages and benefits the people, and is inclusive, sustainable, resilient and dynamic.

The competition will be organised in all 10 ASEAN Member States in October, with winners of the respective in-country competitions going into a regional final that will take place in Jakarta, Indonesia in November this year.

Together with SAP, ASEAN Foundation invites tertiary students in the 10 member states to take part in this initiative and take part in leading social transformation within the ASEAN bloc. Students can find out more about the competition and register online via the ASEAN DSE’s official website: www.aseandse.org. The registration portal is open until 16 June 2017.

On Trump’s Invitation To Duterte To Visit The White House

Wazzup Pilipinas!

"It is rubbing salt in the wound. This is not a simple invitation. It is a virtual endorsement of the climate of killing and impunity in the Philippines.

It also exposes the foreign policy priorities of the Trump government in the region. It is willing to ignore the deteriorating human rights situation in one of its oldest allies in the region for superpower games.

I appeal to the good citizens of the United States, especially our American friends working on human rights and democracy, to oppose this planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. The American public must not allow their country to become complicit to the thousands of extrajudicial killings in the Philippines. We must not allow human rights and democracy to take the backseat in favor of narrow geopolitical interests.

I also urge my fellow lawmakers in the Philippines to use this as an opportunity to lead the effort in crafting a truly independent and progressive foreign policy founded on the principles of equality and human rights, particularly the right to life and dignity, and in the context of our other challenges, such as China and the West Philippine Sea."

Teatro Kolehiyo ng Miriam Stages First Musical Production Billed As "Sinagtala"

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The Teatro Kolehiyo ng Miriam (TKM), the official theatre organization of Miriam College, showcases its first-ever musical production billed Sinagtala. The original musical, penned by Soc Delos Reyes and set into music by Krina Cayabyab, traverses the worlds of reality and fantasy tackling parallel issues that pervade the two domains. Sinagtala, the second production of the group for the school year, will be staged on May 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 at the Mini Forest area within the school campus at 6:30 p.m.

Delos Reyes made his playwriting debut at the 2016 Virgin Labfest, a venue for “untried and untested” theatrical pieces at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), with his work Dahan-Dahan ang Paglubog ng Araw. Cayabyab, singer, songwriter and music teacher, composed the music for the full-length musical, Ang Huling Lagda ni Apolinario Mabini, staged at the University of the Philippines - Diliman in 2014.

The three themes running through the good versus evil set-up of Sinagtala include familial relationships focusing on the sacrifices made by family members in expressing their love for one another, the alarming rate of environmental destruction and its adverse effects, and the consequences brought on by an oppressive regime.

Sinagtala is directed and choreographed by Ricardo Magno with the overall production supervised by Opaline Santos. Magno – who was with the Actor’s Company of Tanghalang Pilipino, the CCP’s resident theatre arm – is also a dance artist. He essayed the role of Aguinaldo in the restaging of Ballet Philippines’ La Revolucion Filipina. Santos, an actor and a cultural worker, is the moderator of TKM since 2014. She is also a lecturer at Miriam College. Magno and Santos were the Philippine delegates to the Asian Performing Arts Forum in Tokyo, Japan in November 2016 where they collaborated with other artists from participating countries and collectively produced seed pieces.

The other members who compose the artistic team are lighting designers Tagay Galit and Geri Regondola with consultant for technical direction and lights D Cortezano; sound designer Monica Mendoza; video designers Mendoza and Kristine De Leon; set and shadow puppetry designer Patricia Resuta with consultant Sig Pecho; propmakers Cha Roque and Jolina Capadocia; costumer Marga Tulaylay with consultant Trency Caga-anan; and makeup artists Cho Fernando and Chi Wasan.

TKM alumnae Peachy Policarpio and Jovic Cadungog respectively helmed the marketing and publicity efforts of the musical.

The main cast members for Sinagtala include TKM alumnae Annika Gamo as Tala, Mindy Ordoñez as Danggoy, Monique Laurel as Agila, and Maan Dela Paz as Aswang. Guest actors invited to the production are Gino Ramirez as Edgar and Daluyong, Hazel Maranan as Corazon, Ren Medina as Alejandro, and Noel Blanco as Lakay. Student-actors in the musical are Thene De Guzman as Lualhati, Jascha Sarmiento as Hukluban, and AC Vergara as Alitaptap.

Ticket is priced at P300 with discounts for Miriam College students and senior citizens at P250. Students from other schools could avail tickets at P280 each. For ticket inquiries and reservations, please call or text Kristine De Leon at (0927) 451-9602.

The Launch of the Lamudi Affordable Housing Fair

Wazzup Pilipinas!

To further assist Filipinos on their path to homeownership, leading real estate website Lamudi will gather property developers across the country in a big property fair exclusive for the affordable housing segment.

Scheduled to happen on July 15 and 16, 2017, at the Glorietta 3 Activity Center in Makati, the largest gathering of affordable properties aims to reach as many Filipinos. Lamudi is setting the event to be an avenue to find the right property that best fits the budget or the perfect place to finally jumpstart the house hunt.

“We acknowledge that home-ownership is one common aspiration shared by all Filipinos, but due to the continuous growth of real estate prices, this dream is becoming more and more elusive to some Filipinos, especially to those who do not know where to search. For this reason, we are organizing a housing fair specific to the affordable market,” said Bhavna Suresh Chathambeth, CEO of the Lamudi Group (Lamudi Philippines and MyProperty.ph).

Gathering all value-for-money and easy-on-the-pocket housing on one venue will not only help homebuyers. We also envision that the targeted approach of the Lamudi Housing Fair’s second installment will greatly help exhibitors to meet the exact audience that they are looking for,” Ms. Suresh added.

More than bringing together affordable developments, Lamudi is preparing more exciting schemes such as property discounts, games, raffles, prizes, and freebies for the attendees. Informative agenda such as real estate investment forums will also be available to complete the package.

The event is expected to welcome not only homebuyers but also property investors, real estate professionals, brokers and visitors who wish to learn more about the industry. Likewise, exhibitors are not limited to property developers; other related industries such as property managers, hotels and resorts, brokerage firms, furniture companies, banks, insurance, and other financial institutions are also encouraged to participate and highlight their products and offerings.

The first Lamudi Housing Fair was a three-day-event successfully held in November 2016 and was attended by more than 5,000 visitors.

RunRio Trilogy Series 2017: Dingdong Dantes Joins the Most Premiere Running Series in the Country

Wazzup Pilipinas!

What's new with RunRio Trilogy series?

Well, joining Coach Rio Dela Cruz and Andrew Neri is GMA-7 Kapuso talent Dingdong Dantes of the DongYan popularity. His better half, my favorite and crush ever since she started her acting career Marian Rivera, is not there but since they are husband and wife, what's his' is hers and I'm sure she will totally support him with this latest endeavor. Dingdong is also the founder of the Yes Foundation which also forms a partnership with RunRio.

Though Dingdong admits he is not a runner, and he may or may not join the any or all of the three runs since his schedule as a celebrity may not allow it, and we also have top be extra careful in running since there has been deaths reported probably due to excessive physical exertion.

Honestly, you are not advised to run, especially the longer routes, if you have no sleep or have been very physically drained from other activities. Life of a celebrity would most of the time require actors to be on the set for several hours and even more than 24 hours a day due to shooting demands limited by the availability of the actors.

With the presence of Dingdong, I'm sure it will be extra star-studded as he would surely invite his colleagues from showbiz to join the runs. Coach Rio already has a huge fanbase especially runners who idolize him since his roots are very inspiring as he aims to motivate runners in the proper way to achieve their athletic and fitness goals.

Isuzu Continue to Show Confidence in the Truck Market

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Isuzu Philippines Corporation (IPC) showed confidence anew in its recent exhibition of its latest truck line-up. Held on April 20-23, 2017 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, IPC’s truck display bares its core values of dependability, durability and reliability.

One of the country’s most trusted truck brand, IPC has been a consistent segment leader specially for its light-duty N-Series trucks which holds the No. 1 position for 17 consecutive years. In the past two years, however, the trucks and buses segment also saw a significant increase in demand which is parallel to the growth of the economy, which is why IPC’s medium and heavy-duty trucks sales increased by around 13% in 2016.

“The key to our success is not on the sale of our trucks, it’s on the full service that comes with every purchase. With every truck purchase, we provide product orientations, driver’s training and even a professional analysis on fuel consumption and actual vehicle operation” said IPC President Hajime Koso. “A truck is probably one of the most valued investments for a company, which is why aside from providing quality products, Isuzu guarantees availability of parts and reliable service” he added.

Leading the 12-truck display line-up were the two (2) units each Isuzu NHR with flexi truck 10 x 10 body and FVM with Fruehaf wing van, which are specially built by IPC’s trusted body builders Kyoei Kogyo Philippines Corp. (KPC) and Centro Manufacturing Corporation respectively.

Netizens Make Fun of Tim Yap's Tweet at Bb. Pilipinas 2017 Grand Coronation Night

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Nakakatawa ung mga "experts" ine-explain meaning nito. Eh understood naman at alam naman natin kung anung ibig sabihin.

I get his point though. Bb Pilipinas has been dominated by mestizas, to which does not really represent the majority of the people from where they suppose to come from. Beauty of the aspirational, instead of the common beauty, it represents.

The "promdi" comment stems from the fact that most candidates are descendants of mixed lineage - mostly Fil x West. I think we are being too literal. He meant "It's too obvious the girls do not really come from the province they represent aka imported."

I think gets ko yung pinupunto niya. Most of the candidates kasi half Pinay. One candidate na narinig ko is born or raised yata in Australia. Walang Pinay beauty talaga or born and raised sa province nila. Pangit yata pakinggan kung "mukhang probinsyana" kasi most ng kilala ko na probinsyana eh magaganda din naman.

I guess, it has also something to do also with the sentence construction or choosing of words, that earned the ire of the netizens.

Kaya when in doubt mag-Pilipino na lang.

Bb. Pilipinas 2017 Grand Coronation Night Humor and Memes from Netizens

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Binibini 19, Rachel Peters, and entrepreneur from Camarines Sur, bested 39 other aspirants to receive the Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2017 crown from last year's winner, Maxine Medina.

It was the longest beauty pageant so far in the history of the Philippines. From April to May. The grand coronation started on April 30 at around 8:30 pm and ended on May 1 at around 2:00 am.

But Daniel Padilla came prepared for longer hours as he was already wearing shades as he serenades the candidates during a performance.

However, one of the candidates was probably sleepy already and was at a state of confusion. She was very unsure if it's a YES or NO.

Xian Lim was trying his best to be funny, especially when they play his songs in the background during breaks, but Pia Wurtzbach was just a bit serious for him. Though she let's Xian knows she does mean business with her hosting.

We had a few doubts on the capability of some judges like Gretchen Ho, Paulo Avelino, Mitzi Borromeo, Ted Failon, etc. but we just remembered that ABS-CBN has a big chunk of sponsorship on the grand coronation night. That's why they are there!

Meanwhile, the most supportive MISIS award goes to... @bernardokath! We see what you did there, Kathryn! She was taking photos, or maybe video, of love team partner Daniel Padilla while he serenades the candidates.

Below are some of the humor and memes coming from the creative minds of netizens. Since some people would consider them as bashing, we decided not to include the owner of the tweets and posts for their privacy and confidentiality. Get ready to laugh out loud!
