2 BMX Champions to Explore Manila on Tour

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Flatland BMX champions and Red Bull athletes Jorge “Viki” Gómez from Spain and Matthias Dandois from France are slated to welcome biking enthusiasts at the PhilBike Expo 2015 and a series of activations from Sept. 30 to Oct. 5, 2015.

Gómez, who turned professional back in 2000 at age 19, is a two-time World Championship Series winner who defines flatland biking as a “fight between mind, gravity, and physics combined with movement inertia; a way of surpassing the limits of your imagination.”

Throughout his 15-year career, the Spaniard has gained global recognition by claiming multiple championships at some of the most prestigious Flatland competitions: European X Games, Asia Championship, and the Red Bull Circle of Balance – styled as the sport’s version of the Superbowl. His participation in competitions and exhibitions has brought him to more than 45 countries in Europe, Asia, and North America.

Born in Paris, France, Dandois has been involved in the sport since 2002. Back then as a 13-year-old, he was first into street riding until he saw another biker practicing flatland at his local skate park. Interest piqued, he decided to shift to the new discipline. Six years later, he was declared the best flatlander in the world.

Azkals Beat Maldives, 2-0, in Tune-Up Match at Rizal Memorial Sports Complex

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Cautiously optimistic.

This was the latest term used by Azkals manager Dan Palami as he assessed the Philippine national football team’s chances four days before the all-important game against a motivated Uzbekistan on Sept. 8 at the Philippine Sports Stadium in Bocaue, Bulacan.

For his part, Azkals coach Thomas Dooley remained grounded, telling the Azkals that Uzbekistan is a strong team with players exposed to top level matches in Europe and Asia.

“We are up against a team that is in 76th place (in the FIFA rankings) with players who have regional experience,” Palami said. The Azkals are ranked 125th in the August FIFA rankings.

He said some players of Uzbekistan are playing in regional football leagues with strong teams, giving them formidable experience and exposure to tough competition. One of the Uzbek players, Server Djeparov, is a two-time Asian footballer of the year, while others play in Russian football clubs like Odil Akhmedov and Vitaliy Denisov.

Based on the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) website, Uzbekistan is considered one of the best football teams in Asia along with football powerhouses Iran, South Korea, Japan, Australia, United Arab Emirates, and China.

#Relationshipgoals or #Thanksbutnothanks: Food Pairs As Actual Couples

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Here’s one for all the singles (#hugot)—name your most annoying couple friends (oh come on, we all have one). They’re the couple who just can’t stop talking to each other, about each other and even for each other (yes, some finish each other’s sentences). If they were food, they’d be burgers and fries, because they just can’t get enough!

Read on to see what some of the best food pairs would be like as actual couples:

1. The PDA (Public Display of Affection) Couple: Burgers and Fries

Ugh. Whether these two are fighting or just going to the supermarket, they just can’t keep their hands off each other. These over-sharers’ posts are the most recurrent you see when scrolling through your news feed. They spend more time kissing than talking—and if they do, it’s in annoying baby talk. Again, ugh.

2. The Always-Arguing Couple: Coffee and Cake

They’re literally hot one day, cold another. These two love each other, but in such strange ways. Both are strong, opinionated and autonomous and don’t like to be told what to do. None of them surrenders or admits defeat easily—which makes your barkada’s game nights extra competitive.

3. The Secret Affair Couple: Salt and Caramel

Paranoid glances around the room, secretive hand touching, giggling, and looking intensely in each other’s eyes. This pair can’t go unnoticed, as they bring out each other’s flavours. They think people don’t know they love each other, but everybody knows—stop trying to hide it already!

4. The Couple that Never Goes Out: Milk and Cookies

They are so wrapped up with each other that you forget if you’ve seen either of them the last month. They always opt to stay in to cuddle on the couch, watching romantic comedies, while you cuddle with your pillow…

5. The Effortlessly Cool Couple: Cheese and Wine

They look like best friends and fight like brother and sister, but the most astounding characteristic is the balance between independence and interdependence. They are separate people with separate interests, yet when they come together it’s like a match made in heaven. #goals

What would your favourite food pairs be like if they were actual couples?

APEC Economies Strategize to Achieve 45% Reduction in Energy Intensity by 2035

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The APEC Expert Group in Energy Efficiency & Conservation (EGEEC), in its 46th meeting held at Marco Polo, Cebu City last August 31- September 2, reaffirmed its commitment to intensify efforts to reduce the aggregate energy intensity by 45% based on the 2005 level by 2035.

Energy intensity is a comparative measure to determine the energy efficiency of each economy calculated as units of energy per unit of gross domestic product (GDP). Highly productive economies with manageable weather patterns, and use high energy efficiency appliances and equipment; apply energy efficient technologies in its buildings and industries; utilize efficient mass transport system and fuel efficient vehicles; and adopt energy conservation measures, among others, would likely have low energy intensities.

Cognizant of the number of factors and level of detail to make the aggregate energy intensity figure meaningful, the APEC EGEEC actively pursues its Energy Smart Communities Initiatives’ (ESCI) Knowledge Sharing Platform (KSP) as a tool to consolidate ideas and best practices, energy efficiency and low carbon projects to support its four main pillars – Smart Transport, Smart Buildings, Smart Grids, and Smart Jobs and Consumers.

APEC economies are then encouraged to support the development of this valuable resource (ESCI-KSP) to determine appropriate project proposals that will address the remaining challenges in achieving the APEC Leader’s energy intensity reduction goal.

Dulaang UP Proudly Presents 40th Theater Season Opener

Wazzup Pilipinas!

For its premier offering in its 40th season, Dulaang Unibersidad ng Pilipinas proudly presents "#R</3J," a multimedial hallucination on William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

The "#R</3J" play retells the Romeo and Juliet narrative both contrasting and adapting to the realities of our generation’s culture that revolves around multimedia and superficiality where Verona transforms into a concrete jungle at the heart of Metro Manila- teeming with corruption, revolt, advertisements, sex, and condominium units. The play captures the essence of the famous love story, juxtaposing the young lovers’ romance with our present society’s many forms of commodified love.

This is the world of "#R</3J," a radical, multimedial hallucination on Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece. Can genuine love exist in a world of alterations and foolery? Exploiting our hyper-real contemporary moment – globalization, ultra-violence, internet inanities, intergenerational alienation – this artistic experiment seeks to dramatize, through a psychedelic mix of all available arts, the postmodern tragedy of our generation. Destroy the city, the family, the government – even Shakespeare! – but never destroy the will to love.

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Apple Premium Reseller Power Mac Center recently inaugurated its 8th Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) at the Annex of SM City North EDSA. The newly opened AASP, which stands on 173.64 square meters, is the biggest AASP in the country to date and is fully equipped ready to accommodate more Apple repairs and provide better service offerings to its customers.

Kaspersky Lab survey finds online account theft the most feared cyberthreat among users

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Kaspersky Lab and B2B International have conducted a survey to find out which cyberthreats Internet users are aware of and which they fear the most. It turns out that theft of online accounts is the biggest concern for users.

Hacking of accounts and malware designed to steal passwords and confidential information were cited as the biggest concerns, with approximately the same number worried about these two threats (both 68%).

Financial threats came third with 63% concerned about possibly losing money from an account, followed by phishing emails and websites. Yet another threat targeting account credentials landed in fourth place.

Threats designed to steal credentials were also among those that users are most familiar with. 86% of respondents are aware of account hacking, phishing and malware that intercepts passwords. This shows that the best known and most worrying online threat for users is the theft of their digital identity.

The threats that worry users the least are DDoS attacks and global espionage campaigns. This may be because these types of cyberattacks primarily target companies and rarely threaten ordinary users.

Porsche Team scores one-two triumph via perfect tire strategy

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Porsche Team followed up its Le Mans 24 Hours victory in June with a one-two finish after a dramatic race at the 2015 6 Hours of Nürburgring August 30. The N°18 Porsche 919 Hybrid overcame three Stop&Go penalties (of five, thirty and sixty seconds), for excessive fuel consumption, to steal second place from Audi Sport thanks, in part, to the tyre strategy that was adopted for Switzerland’s Neel Jani on Lap 143.

The weekend’s competition got off to a solid start for Porsche Team when it secured the first two places on the grid in Saturday’s qualifying, with the N°18 Porsche 919 Hybrid (Dumas/Jani/Lieb) claiming pole ahead of the N°17 sister car (Bernhard/Webber/Hartley). Audi Sport Team Joest, which had topped Friday’s two free practice sessions, had to settle for the third- and fourth-best qualifying times with the N°8 R18 e-tron quattro (Di Grassi/Duval/Jarvis) and the similar N°7 prototype (Fässler/Lotterer/Tréluyer).

Sunday’s 6 Hours of Nürburgring started at the stroke of 1pm in sunny weather with the track temperature standing at 37°C. The cars of Michelin’s partners were fitted with ‘high temperature’ tyres.

After the rolling start, there were no changes to the order established in qualifying once the Porsche Team had cars succeeded in shrugging off the Audis’ early threats. The gap gradually widened until Timo Bernhard (N°17 Porsche) picked up damage to a front aerodynamic appendix. On Lap 24, the car pitted for its first refuelling halt which was brought forward to change the car’s nose. Audi Sport took advantage of the stop to appear in second place with its N°8 car. The N°7 R18 e-tron quattro, in the hands of Marcel Fässler, stopped at the same time but was nine seconds quicker out of the pits.

University of San Carlos Turns to Sophos for Simple, Comprehensive Protection of its Campus Network

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The premier university in Cebu deploys a suite of Sophos UTM appliances and Sophos Endpoint Protection Advanced to safeguard over 27,000 students and 1,500 employees against sophisticated threats and data loss

Cebu, Philippines. September 3, 2015 – The University of San Carlos (USC), the premier university in Cebu and one of the top 10 leading universities in the Philippines, has deployed Sophos for simple, comprehensive protection of its campus network. A suite of Sophos UTM appliances, together with Sophos Endpoint Protection Advanced (EPA), were implemented to protect over 27,000 students and 1,500 faculties and employees against sophisticated threats and data loss.

As USC continued to expand with more users and devices connected to the network, bandwidth consumption became an issue – resulting in decreasing security of its network, as many security features could not be turned on.

With a staff of just nine people, the USC IT team found itself overwhelmed by security incidents. The previous security solutions installed had also proved to be costly and difficult to maintain.

Instead of renewing its previous solutions, which would have cost more than it originally paid for them, USC needed a robust yet resource-friendly security solution to meet its needs. During the evaluation, the IT team was impressed with Sophos’ ease of installation, and its robust and comprehensive security features.
