UP DOST Scholars Association Summit 2015: Post-Event Highlights

Wazzup Pilipinas!
Last March 28, the UP DOST Scholars’ Association (UP DOST SA) held its 7th DOST Scholars’ Summit at the College of Science Auditorium, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City. With the theme “Scholars’ Eye View: Widening Career Dimensions”, the event was participated by almost 200 scholars from different universities. The scholars not only received insights from the speakers but freebies and certificates from the sponsors and organizers as well.

The DOST Scholars’ Summit, the premier DOST scholars' conference in Metro Manila and nearby provinces, aims to help and prepare the DOST Scholars, especially the juniors and seniors, for their career endeavors. This year, the scholars were invited to witness outstanding professionals from various fields as they deliver talks about their respective careers—academe, science and research, finance and business and industry. Other speakers were also invited to give job application tips, to talk about their company, and to inspire their fellow scholars.

The success of the event could not have been possible without the help of its sponsors, media partners, and partner organizations. Above all, the organizers would like to express their deepest gratitude to DOST-SEI which was supportive as ever and helped a lot to the cause of the event, and to MediLink which has been an invaluable partner to the UP DOST SA in organizing the DOST Scholars' Summit for several years.

Laging Handa ang Ating Kababayan with KaKAMPi Microinsurance Program

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Be always prepared and ready for everything especially with regards to personal financial planning as it will be very difficult to manage sudden expenses especially when its totally unexpected.

We should be saving for the rainy days while we still can and not be tempted to waste our precious time by putting the need to invest at second priority.

Be always on the look-out for many ways to make ourselves a family with sustainable sources of funds especially for emergencies like sudden death of the head of the family.

We wouldn't want to leave our family troubled with finding ways on how to get funds for our funeral. They deserve better than hunting for a relative or friend to lend them money to pay for all the expenses.

Dying should no longer be an option. Everyone should be able to live up to eternity. But that's just a fantasy. There is no fountain of youth, and there is no immortality. Whether we like it or not, we will all eventually die. The question is: Do we have enough savings that our family an use if ever the inevitable would come?

MAPFRE Insular Insurance Corporation, in support of the government’s inclusive development initiatives, will launch the Kabuhayan at Kinabukasan Alay ng MAPFRE sa Pinoy (KaKAMPi) Microinsurance, a program to help policyholders protect their family from the financial burden of coping with costs associated with the unexpected death of family members.

Flowboarding Like a Champ at Flow House Manila

Wazzup Pilipinas!

It was a hot summer Saturday at Seasons Mall in  Molino, Cavite. I was at FLOW HOUSE MANILA launch for one of the fastest growing sports in the world: Flowboarding - A combination of surfing, snowboarding and skateboarding. Need an instant surfing escapades?

My thoughts were on the James Bond movie Die Another Day when Bond surfed and entered North Korean sea border and escape the Iceland explosion. That's surfing and snowboarding, right Brosnan and Madonna? For a sport that has 70 million participating enthusiasts worldwide, this is an opportunity to explore and try something different this summer season.

Flowboarding looks like a surfing with the tricks of skyboarding using wakeboarding board. I had a chance to test those boards with the help of the pros. Standing, sitting and do a few water tricks.

Even a 3 year old kid can do with pro guidance. The avenue affiliated with flowriding is the flowrider. A ride that generates thin water flows like the ocean and falls current. Resulting to a wave that permit the rider to experience the thrill waves.

Beat The Summer Heat With Aquabest

Wazzup Pilipinas!

With the mercury continuing to rise in recent weeks, everyone has sought ways to cool down and beat the heat. So, whether you're spending your vacation in the beach and biking or just doing more outdoor activities it's always a good idea to stay hydrated.

1) Drink lots of water: The obvious choice for staying hydrated is drinking water and lots of it. You can never have enough water on hand, and for days at the beach, freeze water bottles the night before so they can stay cold throughout the next day. Drinking plenty of water will help keep your energy up, and make your skin glow. Aquabest is processed using Grander Technology that rejuvenates water making it more effective at keeping you hydrated.

2) Popsicles and ice candy can be an effective thirst quencher and cooler for a hot summer day, and they don't just have to be for kids. Making your own popsicles is fun to do, and you are in control of what goes in them. You can use Aquabest to blend fruits and sweeteners, pour them on ice trays and stick a toothpick and freeze to make your own healthy popsicle.

Casey Suire: “I Refuse to Live a Boring, Ordinary Life”

Wazzup Pilipinas!

When Casey Suire (5-0), of LaFayette, Louisiana moved to Jakarta, Indonesia nearly a decade ago, he was just an ordinary, hard-working American trying to get by. But when he was introduced to mixed martial arts by a friend in 2009, he became obsessed with the sport and what started out as an interesting workout became an intense, burning passion.

“I can remember watching my first MMA show and it was very exciting but thought you would have to be crazy to do that,” said Suire, as he recalled how he first discovered mixed martial arts.

Suire, a certified country boy, spent his childhood days growing up in sunny southern Louisiana but since being employed by a major Oil & Gas company, he was sent to Angola and Africa on assignment before finally settling in Indonesia. He’s been abroad for eight years now.

It was there that he discovered mixed martial arts.

“In 2009, I met an Australian kickboxer and out of curiosity started training with him in Balikpapan,” said Suire.

“He downloaded some Bas Rutten videos and we watched them to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. After three months, I had my first amateur MMA match at lightweight, and fought to a draw. I moved to Jakarta soon after (the amateur fight) and started training with fellow ONE fighter, Fransino Tirta. I went 5-0 in MMA competitions over that time.”
