The Lone Filipino Winter Olympian: Michael Christian Martinez

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Michael Christian Martinez, the lone athlete for the Philippines, is an unlikely competitor from a country without snow. Catapulted into the limelight after qualifying last year, his entire home country, which has never won a medal in the Winter Olympics, is rooting for him. Michael finished 19th overall with a total segment score of 64.81 which means he'll move on to Friday's final free skate.

"I'd love to qualify for the free skate [top 24]; that would be a big accomplishment for me," Martinez, 17, said in an interview with NBCOlympics.com prior to the competition. "I don't know what placement I'll get because my training is so different, but we'll see."

It's likely to be a David-versus-Goliath match-up. Facing medal favorites such as Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu and Canada's Patrick Chan, who rank first and second after the short program, Martinez has not benefited from the same intensive training as many of his competitors.

Bangs Garcia and Dawn Jimenez’ Bomb-Tastic UNO Magazine Covers

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Celebrities Bangs Garcia and Dawn Jimenez graced the autograph signing of the latest issue of UNO Magazine with them on the cover at Powerbooks Greenbelt. Fans came earlier and start lining up the second floor of the bookstore.

As the two ladies arrived with UNO magazine editor-in-chief RJ Ledesma , cameras started to click right and left , and guests were all excited to meet these cover girls in person. I must say they look great in person as they are in the magazine, can’t even believe they can pose daring in the magazine, since they are bubbly and sweet in person.

As RJ Ledesma greeted everyone and introduced Bangs and Dawn, he does a bit of some personal interviews and asked the audience if they have questions as well. Members of the audience (fans and writers) asked questions on their career and some personal stuffs. We found out that Bangs is also a painter and Dawn is a culinary student, very interesting.

Epson’s Moverio to Be Used to Test Opera Subtitle Delivery System

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Seiko Epson Corporation (SEC) is partnering with the Japanese New National Theatre Foundation (NNTF), Information Services International - Dentsu, Ltd., and Zimaku+ Inc. to test an opera subtitle delivery system. The system will be tested from February 28 to March 2 during performances by the New National Theatre Opera Studio in Japan. Selected guests will be able to follow the performances with subtitles projected onto the see-through lenses of Epson's new Moverio BT-200 smartglasses.

Operas are commonly sung in Italian or German, so opera houses often install large LED displays in front of the stage wings to provide subtitles during performances. The problem with these systems, however, is that operagoers have a hard time immersing themselves in the performance because they are constantly taking their eyes off the stage to read the subtitles.

Epson and its partners have created and will test the practical potential of a more convenient subtitle system that they hope solves this problem. The new system takes advantage of the ability of the Epson Moverio BT-200, which can be worn like an ordinary pair of glasses, to display subtitles seemingly in the air while guests watch the action on the stage. Moverio BT-200 smartglasses will be loaned to selected guests who want a more natural opera viewing experience with line-of-sight subtitles.

DOT Region 11 Launches The Big Davao FUN Sale

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The Department of Tourism - Davao Regional Office (DOT-XI) launches The Big Davao Fun Sale, bringing together seven of Davao City’s biggest shopping centers in what is touted as the country’s first citywide shopping festival scheduled on 14 March – 16 April 2014. The four-week long sale will offer best-value deals with as much as 80% discount on the widest range of products: from dining, local crafts, fruits, and flowers (14 March - 16 April); health and beauty (16-13 March); electronics and gadgets (24-30 March); home and travel (31 March - 6 April); to fashion and active lifestyle (7-16 April).

The Big Davao Fun Sale will also feature a food festival organized by the Restaurants Association of Davao Inc. where all its 100 restaurant brand members ranging from home-grown and independent restaurants to franchised businesses are expected to join. Shoppers will also have a chance to win raffle prizes such as iPhone 5 units, all-expense paid trip, and cash prizes worth up to P100,000.

“It did not take long for all seven malls to join forces and partner with the DOT in positioning Davao City as a shopping destination in the country. When the country’s largest malls started opening up in the city over the last two years, competition became steep that Dabaweños, close to two million of them, may not suffice to sustain the malls’ viability. This reality in Davao’s retail industry of late caught the attention of all these mall executives to formally organize the Retail Association of Davao and partner with us in conceptualizing The Big Davao Fun Sale to attract foreign tourists and shoppers outside of Davao,” according to DOT Assistant Secretary Arturo P. Boncato, Jr.

Wazzup Pilipinas!

WD, a Western Digital company and storage industry leader, today announced the availability of WD Purple, a purpose-built line of 3.5-inch, high-capacity hard drives for surveillance applications. Designed specifically for video surveillance units, WD Purple hard drives excel in new and existing home and small business security environments with up to eight hard drives and up to 32 high-definition (HD) video cameras. Shipping today, WD Purple hard drives are available in capacities from 1 TB up to 4 TB.

“By expanding our ‘Power of Choice’ product portfolio with WD Purple, we make it simple for our VARs, integrators and consumers to select the right drive engineered for their application and validated with our industry leading surveillance partners,” said Matt Rutledge, senior vice president and general manager of WD’s Storage Technology group. “WD optimized the WD Purple line of hard drives for surveillance applications to improve high-definition video playback, and operate in 24x7 workloads of surveillance environments.”

Germany Says Mabuhay to Celebrate 60 Years of Friendship with the Philippines

Wazzup Pilipinas!

It was a weekend of celebration that allowed attendees to experience Germany up close and personal in the heart of Metro Manila. Several booths from both sponsors and exhibitors lined up along the stretch of Bonifacio High Street, Bonifacio Global City (BGC) to celebrate two days of exciting festivities dubbed as "Mabuhay Germany".

German food like grilled sausages with potato salad, cabbage and schnitzel with Bavarian beers, home-made desserts, cakes and cookies plus other highlights of Germany were showcased last February 22 and 23 to celebrate the 60th year of friendship between the Philippines and Germany.

Each booth had fabulous giveaways and contests that will allow you to win prizes easily. There was a game in one of the booths where you have to spot the differences between two almost identical photos, another booth has a game that will make you guess the word based from a photo and an incomplete word, one booth will require you to hit all the cans using just two balls to win a prize, another one will ask you to shoot golf balls in a miniature golf course, there was even a card game that will make you guess if the next card in the series is higher or lower in number, plus lots of other fun games available in all the booths. I went home with an eco-friendly bag full of souvenirs.

Things To Do This Summer!

(credits to zerochan)

Wazzup Pilipinas!

With the days quickly passing by, summer is approaching quite fast. Well,... that only means one thing: Vacation is near and we would be able to sleep all day as long as we want without worrying about requirements we need to finish, things we need to review, and other school/work related stuff that really stress us out.

Though often we found ourselves being bored with nothing to do hence wasting our days watching TV or sleeping all day long until the time comes and we need to go back to our stressful lives. Well, fear not! This article might help you this upcoming vacation to spend your time rather than being at home all day long.

Japanese Culture: White Day

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Who says that February was the only month that celebrates something romantic on its fourteenth day?

Well, maybe here on the Philippines it’s only in February, but in other countries particularly Japan, they have this thing called White Day which apparently falls on the fourteenth day of March, just a month after the celebration of Valentine’s Day.

A Page of the Precious Days

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Everyone has one or two special memory that they will never forget. A memory of a day they feel enjoyed, relaxed or just simply happy. Anything can be a precious memory, may it be bad or good. Life is full of mysteries and adventures especially for students like us.

For us, life is about school.. but not all of it. School is a place where most of the precious and memorable things happen. There are a lot of things you will experience once you become a student. A lot of events to celebrate and a lot of things to learn and enjoy.

I know every student like me, among all of school's activities, anticipate for this day. Yes, it's the school's Field Trip! Hooray! Let me share to you how I spent one of the precious days of a student.

A Field Trip to Remember

Museum Manila

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Last February 20, 2014, we had our field trip. It may not be the most memorable one for me but I totally had fun. We were asked to go to school before 5:30 am for us not to be caught on a heavy traffic. We were with IV-Lewis, Ms. Hazel (our adviser) and Ms. Perez (IV-Lewis' adviser) in the bus. Some people say that during fieldtrips, it is in the bus where you will enjoy the most. Well, I guess they're right.

Our first destination was the Museum Manila. From there we learned some facts about ancient China, Greece, and Egypt. I thought it would be boring but I guess it wasn't that bad. I learned many things in there. I could even connect our lessons in History with some facts that were mentioned there.

After the Museum Manila, next was the Aguinaldo Shrine. Our tour guide asked us to fall in line because we need to wait for our turn to go inside Aguinaldo's house. It was amazing to know how they preserved the things in there. After we went to Aguinaldo's house, we had a stop over for us to eat our lunch. After eating our lunch, we went to Enchanted Kingdom.
