The Kuratong Baleleng began as an anti-communist vigilante group but has become a diversified kidnapping, smuggling, and extortion syndicate with close links to officials in Northwestern Mindanao and elsewhere. The group was originally established by the Philippine military in 1986 to guard against the spread of communist guerrillas in Misamis Occidental, Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur provinces.

The first leader, chosen directly by the military, was Ongkoy Parojinog, who allegedly used the group both for its expressed purpose as well as to conduct illegal activities. Parojinog was later killed by Philippine soldiers. When the group was officially disbanded in 1988, they continued to operate as an organized crime syndicate.

Epson Showcases Robots For Next-Gen Factories

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Epson provided a big-picture view of the future at the last International Robot Exhibition in Tokyo by demonstrating how robots will automate the manufacturing floor over the next three to five years. Among the most attention-grabbing demonstrations was that featuring autonomous dual-arm robots that Epson aims to have in commercial production by the end of March 2016.

What makes Epson's autonomous dual-arm robots stand out is their human-like ability to see, sense, think, and react. They are able to recognize objects, modulate the amount of force applied to objects to avoid harming them, and make decisions in the course of executing their assigned tasks. These robots are expected to be able to automate manufacturing tasks that until now have had to rely on manual labor due to task difficulty or cost constraints.

As seen below, a pair of cameras mounted in the "head" of the robot function as eyes that enable the robot to "see" and recognize object of various shapes and orientations. Both arms are also equipped with cameras. These cameras allow the robot to see the shape of objects in even greater detail and to pinpoint their exact location.

Hashtag "MandaramBong" Trending After Senator Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr. Gave Privilege Speech

Wazzup Pilipinas!
"Revilla's speech is more drama and an attempt to pull on the heartstrings of the masses to side with him, than firm evidence to confirm his claim of innocence. I want to see more facts from him. And less emotional manipulation. That is not what I saw while watching him. Disapointng." - Tinni Espiritu
It seems Kap's Amazing Stories has still to share the most amazing story there is. Too bad Senator Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr. shared it via privilege speech at the Senate and thus confirmed only one thing:. He couldn't really defend that he is not a "Mandarambong" and so he did the only thing possible to try to save his neck - put the blame to the Malacanang Administration and try to convince everyone that the President and his men are doing something equally evil.

So that is why Malacanang declared January 20 as National Prayer Day. They probably knew what Bong was going to do. Too bad the prayers didn't worked on the thick-skinned "MadramaBong". It got rolled over by Bong's Tonka truck that he brought with him to the Senate as one of his dramatic props, along with his father, former actor and Senator Ramon Bong Revilla Sr., in a "wheelchair".

Storywriting 101: Design Your Own Story Writing Course Taught By a Five-Time Palanca Awardee

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Still haven’t finished written that novel, short story, or movie? Learn a concrete method for writing stories from five-time Palanca Award-winning writer, Dr. Joem Antonio, in Storywriting 101: Stories by Design. This 12-hour workshop will be held on three Saturdays (February 8, 15 and 22, 2014) from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at U-View in Fully Booked, Bonifacio High Street.

Storywriting 101 is not your typical writing workshop where participants read out their work to be critiqued. This course will give you a clear method on how to bring a story concept to life; you’ll learn how to create characters, set up a plot, make events vivid in the minds of your readers, and rewrite for polish.

Here’s what past students had to say:
"I like how the planning stage in writing was discussed. Most aspiring writers (like me) always have a problem with organizing ideas, which should be the foundation of every story." - Mel
"It was very refreshing and enlightening because it addressed the common faults of writers by giving tips and lessons in a fun way. All in all it was like work and fun at the same time." - Pat

Floy Quintos’ Ang Nawalang Kapatid Closes DUP’s 38th Season

Wazzup Pilipinas!

A musical adaptation of India’s greatest epic closes Dulaang UP’s 38th season. Ang Nawalang Kapatid, adapted from The Mahabharata by acclaimed playwright Floy Quintos, with original score by Ceejay Javier, directed and choreographed by Dexter M. Santos, is a re-telling of the epic battle between the Kaurava and Pandava families. The story focuses on the anti-hero Karna, a brave young man who must choose between loyalty to his family or to the state which made him a prince.

ANG NAWALANG KAPATID was originally written as a children’s play for the Ateneo Children’s Theater and was first produced for their 2011 season. This new version allows for many more of the complexities of the original material to be dramatized. New arrangements of the original songs were created by Ceejay  Javier, whose original works include “Isang Panaginip na Fili”, “Astig”, “Alex in Wonderland”,“Break Away Antigone”. He is best known as Musical Director for Atlantis Productions’ “Next ToNormal”, Disney's “The Little Mermaid”, “Carrie”, “Addams Family”. As expected, the new staging will showcase Dexter Santos’ flair for images and movement as seen in his previous works “Maxie the Musical”, “Collection”, “Orosman at Zafira”.

In adapting the Indian epic, Floy Quintos has chosen to highlight the story of family and blood ties, and the conflicts that these bring about. Karna, who in Indian literature is traditionally the anti-hero, is now a young man searching for his dharma, his truth and destiny, while unaware of his true blood ties. The young and energetic cast is made up of the Dulaang UP Ensemble, with a live band. Krina Cayabyab is vocal director.
