100 Days of Happiness begins at SM Supermalls

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

SM officially starts the Christmas countdown by creating a circle of happiness among Filipinos

To kickstart the Christmas countdown, SM Supermalls began its 100 Days of Happiness last September 16, where they aim to create a circle of happiness with 76 participating malls, shoppers, the marginalized communities of women, persons deprived of liberty, artisans, cause-oriented organizations, and select local government units.

"We want to create a circle of happiness in all our SM malls by featuring products of cause-oriented programs which we will offer to our shoppers who, in turn, give them to friends and family, and ultimately, benefit the communities that created these products," said SM Supermalls President Steven T. Tan.

Through the campaign, SM Supermalls encourages Filipinos to support the advocacies of individuals and organizations that provide opportunities and create livelihood for their communities. For this year, SM partnered with bag designer Zarah Juan, Spark PH, the Girl Scouts of the Philippines (GSP), the Association of Foot and Mouth Artists of the Philippines, UNICEF, and the Quezon City LGU for its Vote to Tote initiative, among others.

The launch event held at SM North EDSA The Block was attended by SM Supermalls President Steven Tan and SVP for Marketing Joaquin San Agustin; Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, Vice Mayor Gian Sotto, and select councilors of the city; Spark PH Founder Mica Teves; GSP President Dr. Nina Lim-Yuson; designer Zarah Juan; and Brownies Unlimited Marketing head Dustin Ngo.

Equipping young girls to lead and build the future, one box of brownies at a time
For this year’s 100 Days campaign, SM Megamall, along with 9 other SM malls, is collaborating with Brownies Unlimited and the Girl Scouts of the Philippines. For every purchase of a special GSP-themed box of brownies in-mall and via the SM Malls Online App, one girl will be sponsored with a GSP membership for a year.

"We have a lot of young girls across the country and they've had such difficult times during the pandemic. Our membership dropped significantly. By buying a box, you can sponsor a girl for one year and she can learn so many things like being independent, loving her country more, and helping her community," said GSP President Nina Lim-Yuson.

Recently, SM Supermalls helped the GSP vaccinate all its 70,000 members nationwide. By providing them with convenient and safe COVID-19 vaccines, SM Supermalls was able to ensure that the GSP members have access to quality healthcare services.

SM shoppers can purchase a box of brownies from 46 Brownies Unlimited branches nationwide and the SM Malls Online App.

Giving marginalized women and persons deprived of liberty hope for the future
Apart from the GSP partnership, SM Supermalls also partnered with the local government of Quezon City for its Vote to Tote program, Spark PH, and bag designer Zarah Juan to sell upcycled tarpaulin handmade tote bags sewn by marginalized women and female persons deprived of liberty.

"Christmas is all about giving. We are very happy that this year, the communities of Quezon City are included as beneficiaries in this program. And apart from helping the women in our communities, we are also able to help the environment by upcycling 70 tons of election tarpaulins that we've collected." said Mayor Belmonte.

Juan, the designer, was the brainchild of the upcycling initiative. "During the elections, there were tons of election campaign wastes. I wanted to do something and I thought I have my platform– my designs. If my designs can actually solve this problem, then it's worthwhile. Then I pitched the idea to Maica Teves, the founder of Spark PH. From there, we gathered all the help we can– from the Quezon City LGU who will help us collect tarpaulins, the women communities that can help us create, and SM Supermalls who can provide us the platform to distribute."

A Happiness Walk was done to showcase the upcycled tote bags that shoppers can buy in SM malls. Joining the Happiness Walk were men and women of substance including select Girl Scouts members, Jeremy Lapena and Bernce Sevilla of the Downs Syndrome Association of the Phils, Mylene Abiva of WomenBiz, media celebrities Ces Oreña Drilon, and Gina Pareño among others.

The proceeds of the upcycled tote bags will be given to the women PDLs in Camp Karingal, and the marginalized women of Barangays Sto. Cristo, Greater Lagro, and Pinyahan in Quezon City. The tote bags will be sold in the following SM malls:
● SM Aura Premier
● SM Southmall
● SM City Fairview
● SM City North EDSA
● SM Megamall

Helping a community of artists
And in the south of Metro Manila, the SM Mall of Asia family will be partnering with the Association of Foot and Mouth Artists in selling painted Christmas cards to the shoppers.

"All these and more will start to unfold in the coming days as we continue spreading happiness across all SM malls around the country. Let us not waste our next 100 days and use it to make one another happy by giving. Today, let the countdown begin to a hundred days of happiness!” Tan closed.

This is the second time SM Supermalls has started a holiday countdown campaign. In 2021, the biggest mall network in the Philippines showed the world more than a hundred ways of giving through 100 Days of Caring. Underserved communities surrounding the 76 SM malls were provided with their urgent needs through in-kind and monetary donations by the malls, its various business units, and the employees.

In its commitment to building communities, especially for women and the youth, SM Supermalls and the Girl Scouts of the Philippines sign a memorandum of agreement to formalize a meaningful partnership beyond the year 2022.

In partnership with SM Supermalls and Brownies Unlimited, the Girl Scouts of the Philippines launch GSP-themed brownies from September 16 to December 15, 2022. For every purchase of a box of brownies, in-mall and via the SM Malls Online app, one scout will be sponsored with a year’s free membership.

SSS Media Advisory: Delay in the crediting of benefits and pensions The Social Security System (SSS) informs its members, pensioners and the general public that there will be a delay in crediting of benefit proceeds and pension for those processed from August 25, 2022 onwards because of the ongoing restoration of the connectivity between its participating disbursement banks and the SSS’ servers. This is due to a fire that broke out at the UPS Room located at the ground floor of the SSS Building in Quezon City last August 28, 2022. The SSS is asking for patience and understanding for this current situation while all concerted and immediate efforts are being made to restore the crediting back to normal operations. Meanwhile, the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP), which serves as the disbursement facility that credits the monthly pensions to the pensioners' accounts, has successfully processed the crediting of the first batch of pensions for September 2022. However, due to the technical issue encountered upon processing of the second batch of pensions, DBP will process its crediting on September 16, 2022 and pensions are expected to be credited to the pensioners’ accounts on September 16, 2022 at 4:00 p.m. onwards. Online filing through the My.SSS portal is now in full operation effective September 1, 2022. Members can already submit their benefit claims applications using the said portal.

Wazzup Pilipinas founder featured on Montalban News & Public Affairs

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

I am proud to announce that the Influencers tour of Montalban that I organized to help boost tourism for Montalban will soon be happening on September 22 to 23 starting with an overnight stay at a camp site (doing several activities onsite), then the actual tour around Montalban seeing the attractions like the Wawa grounds, Rodriguez Ancestral home, etc. and trying out a few dining places on the second day.

This will be a series, inviting a group of influencers (content creators, Instagrammers, TikTokers, YouTubers, etc.) on a regular basis...like maybe once a month or every quarter, depending on availability of all involved and those interested to visit and play a greater role for our Montalban tourism campaign.

The tour will also be featured as among the initial episodes of a new livestreaming mobile app (similar to Netflix but with pure Philippine content) that will be launched in Japan this October, then eventually in the Philippines.

Being a resident of Montalban, it is with great pride that I will be contributing in my own little way something to help our municipality progress by aiming to make it among the preferred destinations of both local and foreign tourists.

A more agressive tourism campaign brings in more people to visit and potential investors to consider setting up their new business endeavors here, and thus would eventually create jobs and other possibilities for the benefit of the people of Montalban.

More power to the people of Montalban and thank you to the assistance of the Montalban tourism office, the office of the Mayor, the establishments who were eager to join, the influencers all excited with the tour, and everyone else who were all eager to participate in one way or another in this first run!

- Montalban News & Public Affairs

In its 21st edition, Pelicula Spanish Film Festival to screen regionally, including screenings in Malaysia and Australia

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

One of the highlights of this year’s Pelicula Spanish Film Festival besides its return to the theaters in the Philippines is its expansion regionally with online screenings happening in Malaysia and Australia.

Owing to the success of the festival since its first run in 2002 by Instituto Cervantes de Manila, PELíCULA has been an annual attraction in Philippine theatres. Since then, countless films have been screened in theaters in the Philippines and have grown a steady following among Filipino film fans.

With this success, Instituto Cervantes Manila now expands its program to other neighboring countries including Malaysia and Australia.

Beyond the promotion of Spanish cinema, the festival is committed to and strives to be a catalyst in the promotion of regional understanding through cultural means where we can all feast on masterpieces of Spanish cinema.

With the Covid-19 crisis, which forced countries to tightly close borders and caused tragic effects on our social and cultural life, the festival can be a good opportunity and a good platform to ease the impacts of the pandemic as we slowly return to normalcy. Furthermore, films always have the potential to bring people together and ease our cultural differences, and linguistic divides, and allow us to experience our shared humanity.

Pelicula: Spanish Film Festival

Now in its 21st edition, the PELÍCULA Spanish Film Festival is one of the most successful film festivals of Instituto Cervantes globally showcasing a variety of acclaimed Spanish films while fostering better communication between cultures through the art of filmmaking, cinema, and cultural exchange. Its goal is to connect both Spanish and Filipino cultures and audiences through this choice selection of award-winning films. This year, the festival will run from October 5 to 16.

PELíCULA 2022 is an initiative of Instituto Cervantes in Manila, Sydney, and Kuala Lumpur, the Embassies of Spain in the Philippines and Australia, and the AECID, in collaboration with the Film Development Council of the Philippines, ICAA, the Embassy of Colombia in the Philippines, the Embassy of Panama in the Philippines, the UP Film Institute, the University of the Philippines and Intramuros Administration, Acciona, Vibal Foundation, Philippine Transmarine Carriers, and Rustan’s.

All the movies are in Spanish (or their original language) with English subtitles. For updates on the Festival, please visit the website of the Festival (https://pelikula.org) or the Facebook page of Instituto Cervantes de Manila: www.facebook.com/InstitutoCervantesManila.

Filipino freelancers ride the uphill trend of gig economy - Payoneer, DICT

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Many Filipinos started freelancing full-time due to the pandemic. Since then, they have discovered and taken advantage of the job flexibility and earning from multiple income streams. These trends along with other key insights on the state of the gig economy in the country was discussed in the webinar held by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and Payoneer Philippines.

According to DICT’s Philippine Online Freelancing Industry Study, 43.4% of Filipino freelancers have only been in the freelancing industry for less than a year while 26% have only been part of the gig economy for 1-2 years. However, despite being new in the industry, this new breed of freelancers are not just exploring the local landscape but the international scene as well.

The study shares that 42.9% of Filipino freelancers have overseas clients. This is not surprising since according to Payoneer and GCash’s study called The Philippines Freelance Market 2022 Report, freelancers who serve both local and international clients earn 57% more per hour than those who just work with local clients.

“The emergence of the gig economy has resulted in changes in the current workforce. With greater work-life balance and independence, freelancers were able to work with a diverse range of clients both locally and internationally.” said Payoneer Regional Vice President of South East Asia Miguel Warren during the webinar.

Upskilling and growing your portfolio

The DICT study found that 58.78% of Filipino freelancers were skilled as virtual assistants. About 43% of the respondents claim to have social media marketing skills and 34.8% of them claim to be knowledgeable on content creation. Digital marketing, web research, customer service and tech, as well as, web development and design, online teaching and tutoring, and project management were also among the skill sets mentioned by respondents.

Nurturing skillsets has also been made easy with the wealth of information available online. In fact, 83% of Filipino freelancers self-study to improve their skills by enrolling in free online courses. Aside from a variety of educational opportunities online, there’s also plenty of job resources to choose from such as onlinejobs.ph, indeed, guru, truelancer, craigslist, flexjobs, and upwork.

As freelancing thrives on variety, especially among clientele, transactions can get a bit tricky and this is where Payoneer strives to help and empower freelancers locally and globally. “Payments haven't always kept up as the world has become more digitally connected. There are numerous obstacles to overcome. Payoneer offers flexibility and accessibility with cross-border payments, making it easier for freelancers to be paid.” Warren noted.

Financial stability, family, and flexibility

When asked about the major advantages of freelancing, respondents have the following on top of the list: financial stability, more family time, personal and professional growth, flexibility, and source of additional income.

Given the many benefits of freelancing, many Filipinos now prefer this flexible livelihood option that suits their lifestyles better than traditional employment.

“When I got into it, I realized that there’s no traffic, I can work from home, I continued learning the ropes and eventually realized that I can make a career out of this,” shared new freelancer Bernadette Dias.

“With the pandemic, doing freelance work is now more acceptable and open. Many people realized that they can provide their families with their needs, as much as a traditional job but even so much better,” shared seasoned freelancer Vanya Tantoco. Tantoco is also the CEO and Founder of Z Studios Digital Marketing Agency.

Tantoco and Dias also noted that digital platforms have made it easier to find jobs and get paid. As the Philippine government continues to promote entrepreneurship and digital innovation, the study recommends that freelancing communities that foster collaboration with government agencies, LGUs, vendors, and interest groups need to be funded and supported.
