Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Everyone loves a tidy lawn, and the neatness of the lawn is dependent on the effectiveness of the lawnmower used. The lawnmower becomes unusable when its starter gets damaged; this is exactly why you must know how to rebuild a lawn mower starter. Without the proper knowledge, you could get frustrated at your inability to make use of the lawnmower.

The process of starting the lawnmower is one that’s interconnected in many ways. When you pull the cord, it immediately rotates a specific hub transmits to the crankshaft while simultaneously spinning the blades. The cord also connects the trio of the motor, spark plug, and carburetor. What this means is that all of these parts do not work when the lawnmower starter breaks down.

Once the lawn mower starter breaks down, you’ll need to repair the lawn mower starter quickly. This article gives you some guidelines that would show you how to rebuild a lawn mower starter.

How to rebuild a lawn mower starter (Step by Step guide)

Step 1: Get all of your tools

Since you’re ready to get your hands dirty with the lawnmower starter, you must be sure to have all the tools you need. Some of the important tools you need while fixing the lawn mower starter are the regular tools you use at home. Specific tools like the screwdriver, various spanner sizes, plier, and a socket wrench could come in handy for this task.

Step 2: Disable the mower

It’s totally unsafe for the engine if you do not disable the mower before proceeding with the mower starter rebuilding process. The first point of action to fix the lawnmower starter is the spark plug area. You’ll need to disable the lawnmower by unplugging the spark plug.

Step  3: Remove the starter housing

Once you have disabled the mower, you can now proceed to the lawnmower starter area. Four different screws are holding the starter assembly in place; you have to remove each one. Your socket wrench could come in handy for this process, as the use of a spanner could be stressful. Upon removing all of the screws, take out the assembly and place it on a flat surface for further works.

Step 4: Work on the recoil pulley

Most faults in the lawnmower starter are usually traceable to the pulley in the mower starter. A quick examination of the pulley and its component could prove handy in fixing the lawn mower starter. Upon inspection, you must now look to separate the pulley from the mower starter assembly. You can accomplish this by unscrewing the plate that attaches the coil to the assembly via a screwdriver. If you get all the screws out, you can easily pull the plate and gain access to the pulley under it. Pull the pulley too, but you must ensure it doesn’t fall out; place a finger on the spring beneath it.

Step 5: Check the spring

You need to carry out a proper inspection on the spring to see if it’s still in good condition. The spring of the mower starter could be spoilt as a result of constant use. If the spring is broken or damaged, you might have to replace it. Replacing the spring could prove tedious for many people due to the rigorous nature of the task. If you’re not looking to fix the spring, you might have to simply replace the pulley. On the other hand, the spring might be quite okay but unhinged. A spring that’s not properly hinged could also cause the pulley not to recoil. In such cases, you must keep the spring mounted in the right way.

Step 6: Inspect the pull rope

The rope in the mower starter could also be frayed or damaged in specific parts. Check the rope for such parts and quickly replace it if need be. Now that the rope has been ascertained to be okay untie its knot and remove it from the pulley. You must wind the pulley in the clockwise direction six times. Upon winding the pulley, align the hole in the pulley with that of the assembly hole. Place a screwdriver in the assembly vents through the pulley spokes to prevent the pulley from unwinding.

Step 7: Insert the rope into the assembly

You now need to reintegrate the rope back into the pulley system of the starter assembly. Feed the rope via both holes and give it a firm knot at the edge. Place the knot inside the pulley to ensure it doesn’t cause obstruction when you’re unwinding the pulley.

Step 8: Coil the new rope

Hold on firmly to the rope while simultaneously removing the screwdriver from the assembly vents. Now you can pull the starter cord firmly to yourself while releasing the pulley. The next step involves unwinding the pulley while it coils the new rope. The pulley will unwind while wrapping the new rope around itself; Make sure you control the speed of the rope during the process.

Step 9: Replace the starter housing

Now that you’ve successfully fixed the parts of the pulley that’s damaged, you can now mount the starter housing. Just as the process of removing the housing units, you need your wrench for this procedure. Once the starter housing is firmly placed, use the wrench to screw all four nuts you removed from the unit. You can now fix the spark plug lid just as it was.
