Portraits of Magellan at National Museum of Fine Arts

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

As part of the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the world, the National Museum of the Philippines brings to public view, for the first time in many years , a pair of portraits depicting the navigators Hernando de Magallanes (Ferdinand Magellan) and Juan Sebastián Elcano, who together and with their crew achieved this great feat. The two portraits can be found, starting March 31, at the Spoliarium Hall of the National Museum of Fine Arts, where they will remain for a full year.

These are the only portraits of these famous men in the Philippines originating in the Spanish colonial period, when they were considered illustrious heroes of the history of Spain in our archipelago, and are therefore priceless and highly significant to our nation’s cultural and historical heritage, both today for us in this quincentennial year and for future generations of Filipinos.

Part of a larger set that included Christopher Columbus and Hernán Cortés, these portraits were commissioned in Spain from Manila by the wealthy businesswoman and philanthropist, Doña Margarita Roxas de Ayala, in 1856 and painted in Madrid by an unknown artist. They were thought to have been copied and adapted from earlier portraits then existing in Spain.

Why Doña Margarita sought to have these portraits made and brought to the Philippines is unknown. There is no record either of where they were displayed. Much later, in 1914, her daughter, Doña Trinidad Roxas de Ayala, viuda de Zobel, donated them to the National Library of the Philippines. The National Library then was responsible for the fine arts collection that eventually was incorporated anew under the National Museum of the Philippines.

Around 1938, President Manuel L. Quezon had these portraits transferred to Malacañan Palace, the official residence and seat of the President of the Philippines, where they were hung around the upper landing of the main stairs. By this means did they fortuitously survive the war, as the Palace escaped largely unscathed in the Battle of Manila in 1945 (unlike the National Museum and National Library which were destroyed).

In the decades since, they have remained at Malacañan Palace and are presently under the care of the Presidential Museum and Library, part of the Office of the President. We are grateful to our colleagues there, led by Director Edgar Ryan Faustino, for the opportunity to borrow them for a temporary exhibition, as well as to Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea for approving our proposal to loan and feature them to the public during this historic anniversary.

Indeed, the opportunity for people to view and appreciate these portraits has, throughout the 165 years since they were painted, been very rare, such that they are little known, even to historians here and abroad.

We hope that our visitors will be able to see these portraits soon when we are allowed to reopen our museums in Manila. In the meantime, please abide by the prevailing Enhanced Community Quarantine and take care to stay safe as we continue to strive to #BeatCovid19.

Brandon Vera, Sage Northcutt join The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition Candidates in Episode 5

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

IF last week's episode is already intense enough, you haven't seen what's next.

ONE Championship's longest reigning titlist made his presence felt in episode 5 of The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition as reigning ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon "The Truth" Vera paid the candidates a visit as a guest athlete.

The Filipino-American champion is definitely a winner in every sense of the word, as evidenced by him being the division's first and only champion since the organization introduced the belt in December 2015.

Vera has knocked down every challenge that came his way, amassing an impressive 25-8 (1 NC) mixed martial arts record, including emphatic title defenses against the likes of Igor Subora, Paul Cheng, Hideki Sekine, and Mauro “The Hammer” Cerilli -- all of whom falling in the first round.

But it could also offer a glimpse of what's in store for the future, all the more with budding contenders like Arjan “Singh” Bhullar and “Mighty Warrior” Kang Ji Won hot on Vera's heels and aching for a shot at the reigning champion.

That alone should make the candidates listen to every advice Vera would be willing to hand out as he provides an imposing presence in the episode's physical task.

But Vera isn't alone in providing their inputs to the candidates as "Super" Sage Northcutt will also be joining the ONE Heavyweight World Champion in the episode.

His good looks may captivate everyone watching, but the 25-year-old lightweight's brute force is no joke as he proved to everyone before that he's not just a pretty face.

Northcutt will be a welcome presence for the candidates as he awaits his next foe after having his ONE on TNT 4 match against Shinya "Tobikan Judan" Aoki in April 28 cancelled.

He, after all, knows a thing or two about being hungry to come back after suffering a first round defeat to Cosmo Alexandre at ONE: Enter The Dragon in May 2019 to go down to an 11-3 win-loss record.

Vera and Northcutt are just the latest from the top-caliber athletes who have appeared on the show after mixed martial arts legends Georges "Rush" St-Pierre and Renzo Gracie, and ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion Angela Lee.

Other athletes set to guest star in future episodes include former ONE Welterweight World Champion Ben Askren, ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix Champion Demetrious Johnson, Indian Wrestling Champion Ritu Phogat, and ONE Women’s Strawweight World Champion Xiong Jing Nan.

The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition invited 16 contestants handpicked from around the world to compete in a high-stakes game of business and physical challenges. The winner will receive a US$250,000 job offer to work directly under Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong for a year as his protege in Singapore.

“The Apprentice” is one of the biggest non-scripted reality television programs in history, judging the business skills of candidates who are competing for a job offer under a high-profile CEO. It has aired in more than 120 countries. The first season of “The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition” consists of 13 episodes and will be seen in the Philippines on Thursdays, 8:50 pm on AXN cable network and on Mondays at 9 p.m. on One Sports.

Liza Soberano is Save the Children Philippines’ newest ambassador

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Renowned actress Liza Soberano fulfils her dream to be a child rights advocate as she was appointed Save the Children Philippines Ambassador who will campaign for children’s rights to survival, learning, protection, and meaningful participation.

Save the Children Philippines welcomed Soberano in line with its celebration of its 40th year of lifesaving work for and with children in the country.

“Officially joining Save the Children Philippines as an ambassador is a dream come true for me,” said Soberano who has been silently donating to the child rights organization and sponsoring children in Uganda since 2016.

“I just want to help people in any form and in any way that I can, and I feel like through Save the Children, I’ll be able to do so much more,” Soberano said.

Save the Children Philippines Chief Executive Officer Atty. Alberto Muyot lauds Soberano’s earnest desire to help the most deprived and marginalized children realize their full potential.

“We know that with Liza’s passion and influence, she will be inspiring a lot of children, youth, and adults to prioritize children’s rights at all times and create platforms for meaningful participation of children,” Muyot said.

In the 2021 Global Childhood Report by Save the Children, the Philippines ranked 110th out of 186 countries with children fully experiencing childhood. The study revealed that children in lower ranking countries have been missing out on childhood, including access to healthcare and nutrition, education, and protection from harmful practices like child labor and child marriage.

Prior to becoming an official Ambassador, Soberano has been addressing the said issues in her own ways. In 2018, she participated in Save the Children’s “Lahat Dapat” campaign against hunger and malnutrition, and rallied for children’s fair and equal access to nutritious food.

In 2020, Soberano supported Save the Children Philippines’ #SaveWithStories which raised funds for Project ARAL (Access to Resources for Alternative Learning) to help children from low income families and those with disabilities gain access to alternative learning modalities amidst school closures brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Soberano has also been vocal in her conviction to speak about women and children’s rights, protection of children from online sexual exploitation, and mental health.

Muyot added that working for and with children is both an opportunity and a huge responsibility. With Ambassadors Katarina Rodriguez, Xia Vigor, Ria Atayde, and Liza Soberano working closely with children, they will be able to amplify children’s voices, and help Save the Children engage into meaningful and sustainable partnerships with stakeholders to further support children’s development needs and respond to humanitarian crises.

“There’s nothing more grounding and heartwarming than seeing the look on people’s faces when you give them the simplest of assistance, may it be financial or just showing them that you are physically and mentally there to support them,” said Soberano.

DOST-SEI, partners vow more int’l victories for Pinoy STEM students

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

From math Olympiads to robotics competitions, Filipino students have been consistently making their mark in the international arena thanks to the tireless efforts of the Department of Science and Technology - Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) and its educational partners—some of whom have been the agency’s allies for well over two decades.

The Institute and its partners recently reaffirmed their shared commitment to promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing ceremony on April 14, 2021. The entire event was held online, a poignant reminder of the unusual circumstances brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as of the determination and creativity of the various agencies to overcome these challenges.

“While Filipinos will always be known for our resiliency, it’s time that we thrived beyond that,” said DOST-SEI Director Josette T. Biyo. “We are thankful to our partners for helping us and our Filipino youth to grow into something bigger and brighter, through STEM.”

Dir. Biyo presided over the ceremony, with long-time partners in attendance including National Olympiad in Informatics, Philippines; the Asian MathSci League, Inc.; FELTA Multi-Media, Inc.; the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild, Philippines; the Philippine Foundation for Science and Technology; the Philippine Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology; the Philippine Meterological Society, Inc.; the Philippine Society of Youth Science Clubs, Inc.; and the Mathematical Society of the Philippines.

“Though the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the educational landscape around the world, we look forward to continue to inspire our youth to pursue STEM careers by showing them that they have the capability to win against all odds in international competitions,” Dir. Biyo concluded.

Inauguration of new Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) of theTagbilaran Port in Bohol

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

As a fulfillment of a promise, Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur P. Tugade and Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) General Manager Jay Daniel Santiago formally inaugurated today, 14 April 2021, the new Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) of theTagbilaran Port in Bohol, which was heavily damaged by a strong earthquake way back in 2013.

The improvement, which involves the construction of a new state-of-the art second PTB of the Tagbilaran City’s main seaport is a vital infrastructure project aimed at providing locals and tourists with more comfortable and convenient sea travel.

The Passenger Terminal Building II is expected to greatly augment the passenger capacity of the port. From only 497 passenger capacity of its existing PTB, Tagbilaran Port can now handle 613 more passengers –almost doubling the port’s total passenger capacity to 1,110, with the completion of the second PTB.

“Nakita ko ang nangyari sa Tagbilaran dahil sa unos at earthquake. Nakita ko ang nangyayari sa ibang puerto at sabi ko: ‘Tapusin natin ang mga proyektong ito’. Nakakahiya at nakakaawa sa mga tao sa Bohol kung mananatili ang mga imprastrukturang ito na nasira, nabagyo at hindi nagagamit. Tatapusin namin ang mga proyekto sa Bohol before the end of the term of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte,” Secretary Tugade said.

The inauguration of the port’s new PTB, which was completed in October 2020, was led by Secretary Tugade and GM Santiago, with Bohol Governor Arthur Yap and other transportation and local officials in attendance.

If we do the inauguration within this context, I assure you, we will come back in the future and say, noon sabi ko mission accomplished, ngayon sasabihin ko, we have delivered,” Tugade added.

For his part, GM Santiago introduced Secretary Tugade as a leader who has a genuine heart for the country and a leader who truly loves the people. He also described the Secretary as, “ART para sa Transportasyon, ART para sa Transpormasyon, at ART para sa Tao.”

Meanwhile, Bohol Governor Arthur Yap said that with the infrastructure projects being carried out under the term of President Duterte and Secretary Tugade, the province will be more progressive by achieving a diversified economy, especially amid the raging COVID-19 pandemic.

“With COVID-19, doon namin naramdaman kung gaano kalaki ang impact sa services sector. About 200,000 of our people ay nawalan po ng trabaho, tinamaan sila sa income nila. Nakita namin na walang diversity ‘yung economy namin. Kailangang ma-diversify ang economy namin at panahon na para magtayo ng infrastructure where we can expand,” Governor Yap said.

*Improved Maribojoc Port*

After the inauguration of the Tagbilaran Port’s new PTB, Secretary Tugade, GM Santiago, and other officials inspected another big-ticket infrastructure project – the Port of Maribojoc, also in Bohol.

The Maribojoc port is also one of the vital infrastructures in the province that was totally devastated by the 2013 Bohol earthquake. With works in full swing, the Maribojoc Port Improvement Project is almost complete with a 95.41% progress rate as of March 2021.

“This month tatapusin ko ang Maribojoc para maging cargo port. I assure you that Maribojoc Port will become operational, at the earliest, next month, at the latest on the first week of June. So, consider it done and accomplished,” Secretary Tugade assured.

The two port projects are an integral part of the "BUILD, BUILD, BUILD" infrastructure program of the Duterte administration, to complement the rising stature of Bohol as a major tourism destination and economic powerhouse. The Tagbilaran and Maribojoc Port projects are part of the 22 development projects of the DOTr in the province.

To date, *the DOTr and PPA have completed 15 seaport projects* in different parts of Bohol - Tagbilaran, Jagna, Tapal, Ubay, Catagbacan, Tubigon, Talibon, Inabanga, Baclayon, and Aguinning. Meanwhile, *6 more seaport projects are ongoing* in Maribojoc, Getafe, Buenavista, and Bien Unido.

To enhance air connectivity in the province, *the DOTr and the CAAP have completed and inaugurated* in 2018 the first eco-airport in the country, *the Bohol-Panglao International Airport.* The BPIA, which replaced the Tagbilaran Airport, can accommodate up to 2 million passengers annually and can cater to night-time flights.

*Reefer Vans Donated*

Moreover, to ensure food security and help the Agriculture sector amid the pandemic, Secretary Tugade turned over two Refrigerated Reefer Container Vans to the Provincial Government of Bohol.

Under the “Palamigan ng Bayan” program, the DOTr Maritime sector aims to provide mobile cold storage facilities for farmers and fisherfolks to preserve the quality of perishable goods, reduce wastage and fetch reasonable prices.

Secretary Tugade personally presented the cold storage facilities to Governor Yap, in the presence of other Bohol LGU officials, after the inauguration of the new Passenger Terminal Building of the Tagbilaran Port.

ABS-CBN to air Chinese News TV disappoints fans

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The ABS-CBN News Channel has entered into an agreement with a Filipino-Chinese media company to air "Chinese News TV," a nightly weekday news program delivered mainly in Mandarin Chinese.

What do you think of this?

So funny! Sinophobic woketards are triggered, having a bitch fit tonight over something they thought would never happen to their favorite media outfit: ABS-CBN, professing "in the service of Filipinos" for years, has started airing Chinese News TV (in Mandarin) via ANC Channel.

Is there's nothing wrong with ABS-CBN upholding it's values to be fair and unbias?. Is this is a true projection of how news should be aired?. Di porke China or Chinese, issue na?.

Can ABS-CBN please clarify on this news report by Rappler.? For ABS-CBN to claim independence and yet align with the One Belt One Road  (OBOR) advocacy is not only contradicting but also very much concerning.

Statement of ABS-CBN Integrated News and Current Affairs chief Ging Reyes on Chinese News TV:

"I understand the concerns on Chinese incursions in the West Philippine Sea & many other issues related to the country’s relations with China.  ABS-CBN News has vigorously covered these issues, in our pursuit of truth and public enlightenment. But we resist discrimination against any race or ethnicity. The airing on ANC of Chinatown News should not be equated with the intrusions in the WPS. Chinatown News is produced by fellow Filipinos who belong to the Filipino-Chinese community. They are part of Philippine society.  Rather than belittle their attempt to provide a service to their local community, it’s time we considered embracing the diversity of this land we all call home.  We have editorial control over their content, provide national news stories & ensure accuracy of the translation from Mandarin to English subtitles." - Ging Reyes

I’m sorry but we don’t buy Ms Ging Reyes’ explanation. As a solid Kapamilya, we are hurt. We feel betrayed.

At nakakatawa yung explanation na kesyo daw they don’t discriminate ethnicity bs. Bakit hindi na lang aminin na malaki yung bayad? Di ba? And imagine, in Mandarin, wtf.

In a statement, ABS-CBN said it "retains the editorial control, provides the newscast with national stories, and ensures the translation from Mandarin to English subtitles are accurate."

Who cares if you have editorial control, etc.? The fact is YOU were controlled by these Chinese into putting this on air! SHAME ON YOU. Sayang pala ang pinag laban ng mga nagalit nung pinasara kayo. Alisin ninyo yan otherwise sirang sira kayo diyan.

We have enough Chinese enablers starting from Duterte! With that broadcast of Chinese TV, your channel makes me sick!!! Finally CAPITULATING?

While I appreciate this clarification from the ABS-CBN News chief, I do believe that the concerns aired by various individuals here were not about/related to discrimination per se—it's about the current sociopolitical climate and the timing when the agreement was inked.

At this point, a lot of us are more concerned about the implications of such actions by ABS-CBN & ANC in this time when our country's sovereignty & territorial integrity are being held in contempt by Chinese state forces.

It's not that we hate Chinese but we know CNTV is China state owned and it will just gonna broadcast propaganda for China.

Do you seriously buy that crap? China is starting to invade us and this is just part of it. How can you be so naive? Pilipinas, wag tayong pumayag dito, boycott na!

Di ko alam kung OA lang ako pero nakakainit talaga ng ulo yung ABS-CBN at Chinese media ganap.

Imagine, most of us were rallying for and alongside them the past year. Tapos biglang ganyan ib-broadcast nila. In the service of the Filipino ba talaga?

Business over integrity, ganun?

Mga utak munggo daw ang mga DDS for their statements. That show already aired on ibc13 and net25. Do your research. Bagong script nga ba nila na naman ba iyan para madivert ang attention sa president na laging absent?

Idk but is it really necessary to have a specific segment addressing their need? Why should our media, the biggest one even, adapt and not the other way around? If anything, it only helps condition people. Given everything that’s going on ABS-CBN should’ve known better.

The broadcast is in Mandarin. So malamang target audience ay hindi Filipinos and it isn't meant as propaganda for Chinese government? Perhaps it's news for the Filipino-Chinese community or the growing number of Chinese expats.

But why in Mandarin? That is not the language of our Filipino-Chinese communities, which is Hokkien.

Head scratch talaga, ABS-CBN.

It could be similar to local versions of TV Patrol in provinces delivered in the local languages. So catering to a specific population lang. There is demand for news delivered in Chinese so why not provide. After all, sa cable channel lang naman to.

Pero ibang usapan naman yung regional segments. I think beyond using the local languages, they deliver news mismo galing dun sa lugar na yun. Wag natin pagbanggain yang dalawa kasi sobrang magkaiba. The point still stands, malaking question yung pagpromote nito sa OBOR.

It's FilChi news by and for the FilChi community. If its main goal is to promote OBOR to Filipinos, then it should have been delivered in Filipino.

I'm not surprised by this though, after all, ABS-CBN is still owned by ultra-rich oligarchs & executives who look after their vested interests. Well-meaning & critical ABS-CBN journalists, reporters & writers can only do so much.

Obviously, they suffered losses. Kaya nga may mga natanggalan ng trabaho dati. Hanggang ngayon siguro.

Ang paglabas nito right after Chiara Zambrano's case doesn't add up. so may Western/European/other Asian news content na din ba sila?

Chiara, sayang yata efforts mo. Compromised? Blink twice if you're under duress.

This leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
Very disappointed with ANC.

Please continue showing the public the real stories in the WPS. Padayon.

Nakaka disappoint lang kasi kung usapang pera na lang din naman, walang wala na ba talagang makakapitan? Don’t the Lopezes have other companies na, ewan ko, pwede mapaghiraman?

I'm so disappointed. Napakainsensitive lang of them na alam naman nilang inaangkin na ng China mga dagat natin, gusto pa talagang e inject sa Pinoy ang pagka Intsik.

The Lopezes along with other ABS-CBN big bosses saw survival & profitable schemes out of agreements with Chinese outfits. Hence, this.

WTF! ABS-CBN! That is how the Chinese enters into one territory. They start then they grew bigger and eventually takes over.

You can't dance with the devil! It will play you!

Sorry but still I'm disappointed ...

Promote na din natin Fil-Am, Fil-Jap, Fil-Aus, Fil-Kor, Fil-Spa...etc culture di ba?

Lantarang gaguhan eh. It's definitely all about the money. Why can't they just admit that they needed the funds to survive and earn a profit. They are a business first and foremost.

This is where we part ways I guess? Call me shallow but then again my country comes first. i'll just enjoy Netflix and YouTube, WeVerse and VLive.

We are fighting for our WPS and your giving them a platform.

Hindi na sila nahiya sa mga taong nakipaglaban at nakikisimpatya sa sitwasyon nila! Nakakasuka!

The irony. Desperate time calls for desperate measures. It's gonna be a struggle sa pawokes na Anti - China pero pro - ABS.

Soon what President Duterte said that Philippines can be a province of China will be a reality.

Why ABS-CBN needs to rethink its partnership with CNTV?

1. In its official FB page, CNTV promotes #CCPChina's propaganda re. Xinjiang where the #UighurGenocide is taking place framing a different picture.

2. The CNTV FB page shares posts from another FB page named CRI Filipino Service.
CRI Filipino Service is media that caters to Filipinos in China but serves at the pleasure of #CCPChina.

3. CNTV FB page also shares news from @CGTNOfficial, a #CCPChina affiliated media organization.

This is what we're saying when we demanded for press freedom. We are not behind the Lopezes and Katigbak because clearly they have money to spare. Iniisip natin yung mga crew, people who work in ABS-CBN with low minimum wages. In the end, moguls protect their wealth above anything.

Lastly, let's channel our anger to the Chinese govt, not the Chinese community in PH.

WWF-Philippines urges local cities to join OPCC 2021-2022

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The One Planet City Challenge (OPCC), a friendly competition that supports cities in developing climate action plans and targets that aligns with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5 °C maximum global warming goal. The OPCC recognizes leading cities and inspires other cities to join the movement. This year, the OPCC celebrates 10 years of engagement during which time we have seen the participation of nearly 600 cities in over 50 countries.

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines is inviting all Philippine cities to participate in the next run of the One Planet City Challenge (OPCC) which will formally be launched on April 15, 2021.

Cities and local governments play a central role in combatting climate change and are key actors in creating the climate-neutral, resilient future we need. For this, WWF created the One Planet City Challenge (OPCC), a friendly competition that supports cities in developing climate action plans and targets that align with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5 °C maximum global warming goal. The OPCC recognizes leading cities and inspires other cities to join the movement. This year, the OPCC celebrates 10 years of engagement during which time we have seen the participation of nearly 600 cities in over 50 countries.

In the 2019-2020 leg of the OPCC, over 250 cities from around the globe participated, including 13 from the Philippines, with the cities of Muntinlupa, Santa Rosa, and Batangas advancing to the final round and further represented the country to OPCC-related public engagement campaign called We Love Cities (WLC). Significantly, Batangas City was selected as the OPCC 2020 National Winner and also emerged as the Global Winner for the WLC campaign, being declared as the “World’s Most Lovable City”.

With Philippine cities’ impressive finish in the recent leg of the competition, WWF-PH hopes that more cities can participate in this call for transformational governance.

“These challenging times have proved to us that planetary health and human health are directly connected,” says WWF-PH Executive Director Trin Custodio. “During this Decade of Action where the whole world must accelerate efforts to achieve the SDGs, we call on Philippine cities to join the One Planet City Challenge to engage constituents in making make our cities more liveable, sustainable, and resilient; leading us toward a low-carbon and climate-secure future for the country.”

Interested cities may submit their Expression of Interest (EOI) from April 12 to 30, 2021. A required checklist must be filled out together with a cover letter signed by the City Mayor to officially be part of this EOI for OPCC. To receive the checklist, please email opcc@wwf.org.ph. Information provided in this checklist will be then used for the initial screening before the announcement of qualified Philippine cities.

Once an official list of entries is gathered, participating cities will be then asked to submit emission reports, as well as their goals and targets relating to climate action using standardized reporting platforms. These will then be subjected to a methodology that has been devised by experts and incorporates findings from the Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 °C. Capacity-building activities are planned for Philippine participating cities as part of the OPCC in the country.

The most ambitious cities will be recognized as national winners, and, from among these, one city will be crowned the global winner of the One Planet City Challenge. For more information and updates, log on to http://panda.org/opcc.

NGO urges unhampered protection for children as Maguindanao conflict seen to intensify

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Save the Children Philippines has called for continuous and concerted response on the protection of children and their families who have been affected by the ongoing armed conflict in Maguindanao as local authorities and humanitarian actors expect prolonged struggle and further displacement in the region.

More than 60,000 individuals have been displaced, including an estimated 27,500 children (around 13,640 are girls and 13,860 are boys), as a result of the conflict between government troops and extremist groups on 18 March in the Municipality of Datu Saudi Ampatuan, which has since spilled over in the neighboring towns of Mamasapano, Shariff Saydona Mustapha, Shariff Aguak, Datu Salibo, Datu Unsay, and Datu Hoffer Ampatuan.

“We are deeply concerned about the present situation of the children in Maguindanao who have to endure fear and displacement once again at the most unfortunate time of COVID-19,” said Atty. Alberto T. Muyot, Chief Executive Officer of Save the Children Philippines.

Save the Children Philippines conducted an assessment in the evacuation centers and found that the major protection concerns of displaced children and adolescents were their fear and psychological stress from the volatile security situation and the apparent lack of privacy in the evacuation centers and toilets. Children and their families have also reported their miserable conditions in evacuation centers.

Due to the compounding safety issues and risks brought about by the pandemic, Muyot highlighted the importance of strategic communication of public health messages across the affected areas and innovative ways to implement the minimum health standards while in temporary shelters.

“We urge the humanitarian community to ensure that boys and girls are accorded with prompt and regular mental health interventions and that temporary shelters are provided with gender-responsive WASH facilities to avert cases of gender-based violence,” said Muyot.

Save the Children Philippines extended humanitarian assistance to 500 affected families by distributing food items and hygiene essentials. The support was made possible through the ReACh 2 TEACH project funded by the European Union Humanitarian Aid.

The child rights organization has also been leveraging its engagement with the Local Council for the Protection of Children, Violence Against Women and their Children (VAWC) desks, and the Women and Children Protection Units (WCPU) in the region and the community-based informal structures such as community-based child protection mechanism (CBCPM) groups who have been formally trained to support the government-mandated structures to protect children at all times.

Save the Children Philippines is working closely with the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) Ministry of Social Services and Development, the Ministry of the Interior and Local Government, and other partners for the effective prioritization of people’s needs and delivery of humanitarian assistance.

Manila Bay gets fresh dolomite dump

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Heavy vehicles dump fresh dolomite at the "Dolomite Beach" along Roxas Boulevard in Manila on Tuesday, April 13. The artificial white sand beach is part of a P389 million-peso project of the gov't to rehabilitate Manila Bay.

Cases are still rising, yet the news we got today is manila bay getting another dolomite dumping?

What's the sense of Manila Bay's "beautification" if no one will be able to personally see it due to the lockdown?

Amidst the pandemic, the government is wasting money on dolomite dumping. This can even worsen the condition of the coastal and marine ecosystems in Manila Bay by introducing foreign material and increasing sedimentation.

Malacañang has defended the controversial dumping of crushed dolomite in the area. Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque last Sept. 7 said that Manila Bay’s “white sand” makeover will give immeasurable benefit to Filipinos’ mental health.

The mental health reasoning of the government for the dolomite issue / waste of resources is the same thing as people using buzzwords they get from article headlines without actually reading the article.

So magagamot depression at anxiety ng mga Pilipino dahil maganda Manila Bay?!

These people are just killing Manila Bay. Idk ah but replenishing it again with another dose of dolomite that can be washed away again  over the course of how many months?? Where is the sustainable tourism?? WHY IS OUR MONEY GOING TO THIS SHITTY PROJECT?!

LITERALLY THROWING MONEY INTO THE OCEAN FOR NOTHING + the environmental repercussions of mining the dolomite!

This isn't how you rehabilitate Manila Bay. You do that by stopping the reclamation projects destroying the ecosystems, corals, mangroves, & displacing fisherfolk!

Let's be honest, Manila Bay is just a huge kitty litter at this point.

Stop lying to the Filipino people!

This could've been thousands of vaccines, additional beds and facilities.

This could've been thousands of Filipino lives saved.

Skill Building: Make the Most of Lockdown

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

With the ever-increasing scope of lockdown, it can be easy to feel like there is nothing for you to do but hunker down and wait until the worst passes. While this is certainly one approach you could take, you could always try to make the most of this time instead. How do you do that? By learning a new skill.

Learning a New Skill

It may seem like a stressful and convoluted process, but learning a new skill is actually much easier than most people even realize. Online learning facilities such as LinkedIn Learning allow people access to an enormous amount of tutelage and information for almost any topic. This makes the process of learning new skills much easier; all you need is a little time and dedication.

Coding

There are very few skillsets as misunderstood as coding. For the most part, people tend to look on programmers and software developers like techno wizards that know the beautiful machines' secret language. This is for a good reason. From the outside, coding can seem a lot like magic, but once you’ve broken into the nitty-gritty of the skill, you’ll see just how straightforward and interesting coding can be.

There are a ton of different ways that you can break into the coding skillset, and it often depends on what you want to do with the coding skills you are developing. Often the best way to start is to learn python. As a coding language, it is one of the most versatile and is widely regarded as the easiest to learn.

Art

The ability to create beautiful works with just a pencil or a computer is one that almost everyone who has seen an artist at work is jealous of. However, this isn’t some mystical gift passed down by the gods. Artists put a lot of work into honing their craft and sharpening their skills which means that you can too. With a bit of time and effort, you can create art every bit as beautiful as any you’ve seen others make.

There are a number of different ways to go about learning art online, from studying theory to instruction courses. In all likelihood, the most effective methods are the courses that lead you through learning the basics and offer exercises every step of the way, such as DrawaBox.

Risk Management

There are a number of ways to learn how to deal with risks, but one of the most surefire methods is to engage in controlled risk-taking. One of the best ways to do this is to play games. Ruby Fortune is the best online casino Canada has to offer and supplies many games that would help you learn to mitigate and manage risks.

You might not consider it one, but risk management is a skill, an important one. If you don’t develop your abilities with these skills, you will find any situation where you have to deal with risks far more challenging than is necessary. In fact, you may even freeze up and fail to handle such situations at all. Whether in business or just day-to-day life, risks are a part of living, and knowing how to deal with them will make your life much easier.

5 Reasons Why You Should Integrate ERP Systems with Your Company’s Accounting

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

When faced with the need to upgrade your business’s accounting system, you typically have two choices. Your first choice is to purchase standalone accounting software that does only accounting-related operations, such as financial accounting, managerial accounting, or cost accounting. Your second choice is to explore all-around enterprise resource planning (ERP) software that handles accounting along with other business processes. The software will allow you to complete accounting functions as well as functions for sales, project management, inventory, material requirements planning (MRP), and corporate banking.

The tendency for many companies, especially those comprising the small-to-medium enterprise (SME) sector, is to buy only the accounting software. At first, purchasing an accounting solution may seem like the cheaper and more practical choice over purchasing a whole ERP system. But at its best, this kind of investment is only capable of improving accounting processes and nothing more. What if a software solution could help a company improve its overall business performance and not only its accounting practices? If ERP can be thought of as a holistic business software solution, it makes more sense for companies to invest in it.

If you’re the chief financial officer or other decision-maker for your company’s finances, here’s why you should consider a more integrated approach to your accounting. Below are the five best reasons for using an integrated accounting system with an ERP instead of a standalone accounting solution.

It Will Help You Get the “Big Picture View” of Your Enterprise

One thing many businesspeople learn over the years is that core business processes cannot be done in isolation. The company’s performance in one aspect, such as its financial management, will affect its performance in other aspects, such as future sales and production activities.

It’s good to be aware of this interconnectedness in your business operations and, moreover, preserve it by using an ERP system. When you’re overseeing tasks like accounting, you won’t feel as if your work is isolated from the work being done by other staff members. In other words, an ERP system will allow you a “bigger picture” perspective for your company’s processes, which would be impossible with just accounting software.

You Can Keep Your Accounting, POS, and Inventory Data Up to Date

Compared to standalone accounting software, an ERP system will be much more helpful in your everyday management of your business data. You’ll have an immense advantage if you can streamline your accounting data with data in the other modules of your ERP system. Every time you do accounting, you’ll be confident about your figures aligning with those of your inventory and point of sales. This is definitely faster and easier than drawing up separate applications and trying to reconcile the figures manually.

Using an ERP system will also reduce the likelihood of data-related errors, like double entries, missing entries, or inconsistent entries. It’ll certainly save you the grief of doing accounting processes with incorrect financial data, finding out after the fact, and doing it all over again. As such, it’s a worthwhile investment to make.

You’ll Save Time Doing Accounting and Other Vital Business Processes

Another key advantage that an ERP system has over standalone accounting software is a wider range of automation capabilities. ERP software can automate accounting procedures like those for payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable. At the same time, it can auto-generate invoices, auto-bill your retail and corporate customers, and automatically update your inventory.

You and your staff will end up saving so much time with an ERP system because a larger number of your tasks can be automated. If you invested in a standalone accounting solution, you’d benefit from this kind of automation capability on a much smaller scale.

It Will Tighten Your Data Security

Whether you’re doing your accounting on spreadsheets or using an application for it, you’ll constantly be worried about your data security. What if someone in your accounting team commits a serious error by accident, and you end up losing a large chunk of your financial data? What if your system falls prey to a malicious hacking attempt?

If you invest in an ERP system, you can enjoy a higher level of data security than you would on a standalone accounting solution. ERP systems are built for security and typically have more comprehensive backup protocols than standalone applications. Therefore, in the worst-case scenarios, you’ll be readier to implement a backup plan with an ERP system.

It Will Make Record-Keeping for Taxes So Much Easier

Lastly, an ERP system may contribute so much more than standalone accounting software in the task of keeping financial records for taxes. An ERP software suite like SAP Business One can auto-generate the accounting records you pass to government agencies. Come crunch time for paying business taxes, you’ll be happy to have an all-around software suite to consolidate all your data on your revenues.

Just so long as your ERP follows the BIR’s documentary requirements for the use of a computerized accounting system (CAS), you’ll be all set. You can ask your ERP software vendor to help you navigate through your CAS registration, as they’ll likely have experience dealing with this process.

Conclusion: Adaptable and Efficient Business Management Practices with ERPs

The great thing about ERP software is that you can customize it according to your needs. That means that you can choose which modules to use on it aside from an accounting module. You can make your ERP system as lean or as inclusive as you need it to be, depending on your budget or your company size.

One thing’s for certain. If your company is in a position to do so, it’s better to purchase a system that integrates accounting with other business processes. If you invest in an ERP system, you’ll see for yourself what benefits it will have on your business beyond improving its accounting practices. Here’s to flexible and all-inclusive business management strategies using ERPs.

#ArmyOfTheDead: Zack Snyder's vision gets full freedom

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

I'm pleased the zombie purists seem to be dying out. The genre needs variety and I'm excited to see how the zombies in #ArmyOfTheDead behave. So far they seem pretty terrifying. I'll always trust #ZackSnyder to deliver a kick ass zombie flick.

First full trailer for Zack Snyder's #ArmyOfTheDead takes zombies to a new level.

An isolated Las Vegas, a hungry horde of the undead, and the last chance to get $200 mil.

This is #ArmyOfTheDead. In select theaters May and on Netflix May 21.

#ZackSnyder is coming to rule the internet and streaming chart yet again with #ArmyOfTheDead

Who would have thought that #ZackSnyder could make an even crazier zombie movie than Dawn of the Dead......but here we are.

I'm so fascinated by the zombie heirarchy, and think this could be the first time in a while zombies are actually scary.

I am SO here for an organized zombie horde. There is a ton of room for stories with that, and I can't WAIT.

The trailer was so great. I am happy to see him return back to Zombies and also change up his color pallette. The cinematography looked great. I think this will be a really unique step forward.

Trailer was awesome. Looks like this could be the best Snyder movie since Watchmen.

A far different movie than I had been expecting, with evolved zombies that look awesome and remind of George Romero's smart zombies. And it looks like animals aren't immune in this world!

#ArmyOfTheDead Trailer was Absolutely Insane. The idea of Zombie's developing an animalistic tribe mentality is absolutely Bonkers!!!!

What we know so far about the zombies from Zack Snyder's ARMY OF THE DEAD:

- According to the cast, they're unlike anything we've seen before
- They're fast and agile
- Rumored to be intelligent
- and the virus origins are tied to AREA 51!

#ArmyOfTheDead is expanding zombie lore by adding a new type called "Alphas" with a level of consciousness.

"I want the audience to get a chance at having sympathy"- @ZackSnyder

I’ve liked less than half of Snyder’s movies, but one of the ones I liked was not only one of the best remakes ever, but one of the best zombie films ever. I’m guessing this will be more eye candy fun with gore than serious horror, but I’m down either way.

Fun isn't his preference, it'll be balls to the wall insane. There’s a cartoon zombie tiger. I genuinely hope that’s just meant to be fun.

I can’t believe it has taken this long for Snyder to return back to his horror roots!! Very excited to see what he does with this.

Snyder on working with Netflix: There are no other cuts of the movie. I didn't have to fight them. It was the opposite. #ArmyoftheDead

"You don't have to see the bastardized version." You get to just see the awesome version first.

Amazing that we sense relief for a talented filmmaker being treated as such. That's the depths of Warner Bros and how they operate.

Zack is getting so much love and respect from Netflix. They never doubted him unlike the other studio. Truly powerful!

As it should be Zack. As it should be. Happy for you Mr Snyder. Trust in the directors vision. Executive's aren't hired to do a director's job.

Because they believe in his vision and doesn’t doubt or question him. Warner Bros sabotaged Zack starting with Batman VS Superman. So much for being a “director-driven” studio.

So awesome there are studios that give artists full creative freedom.. what a concept.

Legendary moment. He may be controversial but I have loved zack snyder as a director. Love how Zack is subtly dissing WB and Joss Whedon without naming names. That is some serious shade thrown at Warner Bros.

And I loved reading.

Zack is key to the success of DC movies. It’s time to get rid of the old guard of execs, who won’t let creativity and imagination thrive...leading to less $$$ for them. Army of the Dead could have easily been theirs.

Yet a portion of the fanbase wants him to remain at Warner Bros, a studio that doesn't want to continue his vision, so he keeps being screwed.

Fighting for more Snyder DC films is not worth it because he will have to deal with the same studio that butchered Justice League back in 2017.

I love when zombies have personality, which is something George Romero was so good at. One zombie from the trailer of #ArmyoftheDead looks to be a sort of Queen-like leader, a true Vegas Zombie ruling over the wasteland. Interesting to see Snyder picking up the "smart zombies" baton from Romero.

Athena Perample plays the zombie queen in #ArmyOfTheDead and it is so on brand and not at all surprising that, the second she popped up in the trailer, I knew she'd be my favorite character...

Richard Cetrone (@300StuntMan) who you probably know as Ben Affleck's Batman stunt double, is playing Zeus in Army Of The Dead.

Can we also take a moment to appreciate how flawless Tig Notaro's addition to ARMY OF THE DEAD is?

Tig Notaro was brought in to replace Chris D'Elia, however due to the pandemic, they filmed all her work on green screen. She never actually interacted with the cast.

This is just a reminder, the way Netflix is promoting and hyping up #ArmyOfTheDead is pretty normal. The way @WarnerMedia is handling the #SnyderCut is the very strange psychotic like behavior.

It’s so ridiculous that when you tell someone out of this circle they won’t even believe you lmfao.

Well we are still trying to make sense out of it and we have a good understanding of their bullshit politics.

#ArmyOfTheDead, which reportedly sat in development hell at WB for 10 years before Netflix bought it, has a $90 million budget, just $20 million more than what was spent to finish ZSJL, 3 years after spending $300 million on the 2017 disaster.

You can't make this stuff up.

One of life's small pleasures is how WB manages to look dumber with every passing day.

We will always keep fighting to #RestoreTheSnyderVerse but if WB never work with Zack again, that's their loss. Im just so happy Zack has found a home at @netflix where he can roam creatively free. He has fought too many battles with WB. Long live the #ArmyOfTheDead
