Araneta Center and CARA Care for the ‘Palengcats’

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The Araneta Center, Inc. (ACI), does right by the stray cat population in the Center, beginning with the ‘palengcats’ found in Farmers Market, by teaming up with CARA Welfare Philippines for a TNR (Trap/Neuter/Return) program, the only method proven to be humane and effective in controlling feral cat population.
ACI, through the Farmers Market management, donated P25,000 to CARA for the program and would also go a long way in supporting the group in its expenses. The contract signing and ceremonial turn-over of the check, held at the market’s Dampa section, was spearheaded by Margarita ‘Gaita’ Fores, 2016 Asia’s Best Female Chef, who is known for her Market Tours in Farmers Market.

“We really are so happy this morning that we are finally officially inking this relationship with CARA. I’ve done quite a number of things with CARA – we’ve always done fundraisers with them but I think this one talaga, it tugs at the heart. Medyo I’m getting emotional dahil this is home for me,” said Fores.

“I think that this event today is the biggest proof that we love cat and dogs and we love the fact that they are here at the Araneta Center. They make the center such a happier place for the people that come and go through our center. This is probably the busiest commercial center in Metro Manila and we want people to feel that pets are welcome and most especially here at the Market,” Fores added.

Many commercial districts deal with the population of stray animals, mostly cats and dogs, in their areas. Working with a group like CARA is a win-win situation for the Araneta Center and allows the Center to treat the animals with compassion while ensuring they are not a burden to operations.

“Caring for the ‘palengcats’ is just one way the Araneta Center is widening the scope of its PET PALS program, which has introduced us as a pet-friendly destination,” noted Marjorie Go, Araneta Center Inc.’s marketing manager. “Many people are calling out establishments for not being responsible for the stray population in their area, but that takes time and a lot of effort. And this is one way we are making sure we are stepping up.”

With PET PALS, pet owners can now bring their fur-babies to the Gateway Mall, Ali Mall, Farmers Plaza, and into select stores and other parts of the Center, provided that they have secured the PET PALS ID.

PET PALS likewise encourages responsible pet ownership by requiring them to keep their fur-babies on a leash while they are walking, carrying them while riding escalators and elevators, and cleaning after them.

Earlier this month, PET PALS visited PAWS in Quezon City with the 2019 Binibining Pilipinas candidates. PET PALS likewise donated about 150kgs of cat food to help supplement PAWS’ supply. On May 18, the Araneta Center is also holding a pet-centric event in line with PET PALS, dubbed “Pet-errific,” and is inviting all pet-lovers to join the summer-themed pet gathering.

For more info on the event and other PET PALS activities, visit Araneta Center’s website and follow it on its social media pages: @AranetaCenter on Facebook and Twitter and @TheAranetaCenter on Instagram.

Musica FEUropa Choral Competition on May 25 and 26

Wazzup Pilipinas!

MUSICA FEUROPA, Far Eastern University’s annual choral competition and festival with the European Union in the Philippines as its principal partner, grows in size and stature every year.

The key criterion of MUSICA FEUROPA is that each choir has to perform two songs: one song of their choice written in an official European Union language, and one piece written in any Filipino Language.

From just four choirs in 2009 mostly from the City of Manila, the number rose to an all-time high of thirty one choirs hailing from all over the Philippines. What used to be a competition for college choirs expanded to two categories: High School and Open including but not limited to university, church, company, government and other ensembles. Musica FEUROPA has become one of the definitive choral competitions in the Philippines.

As Musica FEUROPA begins its second decade, some notable changes will be implemented to intensify the competition. The High School Category expands to a Teen Category to include youth between thirteen and nineteen years of age. Like last year, the top three finalists of each category will compete for the title of Grand Champion.

Also, the tutti finale of the European Union Hymn will be sung in German.

Saunder Choi, an acclaimed Filipino composer was commissioned for a competition piece to be performed in the Grand Finals. The piece entitled “El Vasto Mar” will convey how music can serve as a universal language to promote and sustain unity, peace and harmony among different nations. The text of the piece is lifted from Sampaguitas Y Poesia Varias, written by Pedro Paterno.

This year, ten (10) choirs from the Open Category and five (5) from the Teen Category will compete in MusicaFEUropa 11.

The winner will be determined by esteemed Filipino choral conductors and clinicians.

The semifinalists from the Teen Category will be adjudicated by Arwin Tan, Rodolfo Delarmente, and Maria Theresa Vizconde-Roldan, while Lester Delgado, Jude Roldan, and Emmanuel De Leon, Jr. will adjudicate the Open Category.

The Grand Champion will be decided by Prof. Fidel Calalang, Jr., Dr. Beverly Shangkuan-Cheng, Dr. Ed Manguiat, Ma. Lourdes Hermo, and Ramon Lijauco, Jr.

The Grand Champion shall take home PhP100,000.00 and a trophy. The First Runner Up and Second Runner Up will receive PhP30,000.00 and PhP20,000 respectively, together with a trophy. A consolation prize of PhP10,000.00 will be given to the remaining grand finalists.

Musica FEUROPA 11 will be on May 25 and 26, 2019 in the recently retrofitted Auditorium of Far Eastern University, Manila.

FEU and the Heritage Conaervation Society All Set for Significance in the Details Lecture on May 4

Wazzup Pilipinas!

For the first time since the merry month of May was dubbed National Heritage Month, the Heritage Conservation Society (HCS) has swung into the mood of things for National Heritage Month, organized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and partnered with Far Eastern University (FEU) for an afternoon of learning, capped by a light hearted concert, a tribute to Broadway, at the university’s auditorium.

The heritage event, entitled, “Significance in the Details: Identifying Values in Heritage Sites and Structures” is comprised of two lectures and a highly informative walkabout talk through the 91- year old university.

The talks are sequenced in such a way that the audience will be taken from a basic understanding of the Heritage Law, ( The Significant Other: The Heritage Law Beyond Presumptions by HCS President, Atty. Mark Evidente) to a virtual experience ( The Relevance of Digital Scanning in Documenting Heritage Structures by Conrad Alampay, HCS trustee and President of Digiscript Inc.), and finally a tactile experiencing of structural details, with a walkabout led by FEU’s Director of the President’s Committee on Culture, Martin Lopez, as he points out the well-preserved Art Deco details of this 91 - year old declared heritage structure.

“As generations come and go, it is important to keep re-introducing the idea of heritage preservation and educating them on the value of our nation’s built heritage in relation to our country’s history,” explains HCS Chairperson Liliane Rejante Manahan. “These aren’t just old buildings. There is a significant memory attached to each of the structures. When a structure of significance is physically lost and replaced by something else,  the landscape changes, the memory is lost, and all this generation will remember will be a watered down story represented by whatever stands in its place….perhaps a burger joint.”

“Significance in the Details” will be held at the PCC Center Studio, Far Eastern University on Saturday, May 4, 2019 from 1:30-5:00 p.m., followed by “A Toast to Broadway,” at the FEU Auditorium at 6 p.m.

Entrance fees: P400.00, inclusive of a light snack. Only 120 seats available.

MARINA, DTI to Develop Standards for Shipbuilding, Ship Repair Sector

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) has partnered with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to develop the Philippine National Standards (PNS) for the shipbuilding and ship repair (SBSR) sector.

The MARINA-DTI joint technical committee will formulate the PNS for the SBSR sector to ensure the quality and competitiveness of Philippine-SBSR services through sustainable business processes as envisioned in the 10-year maritime industry development plan (MIDP), specifically under priority program #5 or the establishment of a global maritime hub.

Currently, Philippine shipyards are required to acquire certifications from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for the commitment to do environment-friendly practices; the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) for the safety workplace against fire accidents; and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) for the welfare of the workers.

With the PNS, the shipyards will also be required to meet the minimum international standards to ensure the quality and safety of Philippine-made vessels.

The DTI fully supports the MARINA on its efforts to modernize the SBSR industry, noting that it will help alleviate poverty, attract foreign investments, and achieve the Philippine Development Plan 2017-2022.

On 08 May 2019, the MARINA will conduct a consultation with SBSR stakeholders in Mindanao to discuss the development of the PNS, specifically on ship design.

Aside from the DTI, the development of the PNS for the SBSR sector is also supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), and several private partners.

MARINA Hosts Training, Write-Shop for IMSAS 2021

Wazzup Pilipinas!

To further improve the implementation of international standards in the country’s maritime industry, the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) hosted another training course and write-shop for auditors under the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Member State Audit Scheme (IMSAS).

On 22-27 April 2019, training expert from IMO and the International Maritime Safety Security Environment Academy (IMSSEA) Mourad Ghorbel, discussed the roles and responsibilities of the audit team, the audit preparation and processes among others. He also trained the auditors in recognizing and resolving potential challenges that may be encountered during the audit processes.

The two-day write-shop on 29-30 April 2019, on the other hand, is allotted for the drafting of the country’s pre-audit questionnaire and national maritime strategy to ensure that its international obligations and responsibilities as a flag, port and coastal State are met.

MARINA Officer-in-Charge Vice Admiral Narciso Vingson Jr believed that the continuous support of various government agencies in the country’s preparation for the IMSAS audit in 2021 is vital in the enhancement of the Philippine maritime industry.

“Let us work together in concretizing our actions and schemes to enhance maritime safety, ensure marine environment protection, and effectively implement mandatory IMO instruments that guide our ship operations into complying with international standards,” Vice Admiral Vingson said.

The training course is participated by representatives from the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) and Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA).

The IMO conducts IMSAS to provide member states, such as the Philippines, with comprehensive and objective assessment on the implementation and enforcement of mandatory IMO instruments pertaining to safety of life at sea, prevention of pollution from ships, regulations for preventing collisions at sea, load lines, and tonnage measurement of ships and standards of training, certification and watchkeeping for seafarers.
