Should Media Accept Tokens of Aporeciation in Exchange of Their Service?

Wazzup Pilipinas!

As a member of the media, whether its traditional like TV, radio and print, or the new and better online media which includes blogs and social media, should you expect to receive, or demand, something in exchange of a coverage, feature or write-up ?

The reason why traditional media is being accused of being paid purveyor of fake and biased news is mainly because they accept what could be called honorarium, talent fee, tokens, loot bags or complimentary gifts, etc. because admit it or not, our stories could be greatly influenced by perks, freebies and privileges especially if they are of considerable value. Of course you would feel somewhat obligated to be at his goid side thus giving him or her a better side of the story.

It has been a common practice especially at gatherings like events, presscons, media launches, etc., that the PR or company would provide something in return for the media's attendance, but this culture has worsen because many media would not put out your story if they don't get something in return. Others would not show or publish if there is no money involved. That is why many would try their best to pamper them with everything to make their visit worth their time. So aside from their salaries with their respective media outfits, media people also gain something when assigned to field duty...or receive gifts too when guests visit their studio for promotion or interview.

Don't you think the media should also be like government employees that are prohibited from accepting gifts or any form of "thank you" for a job well done?

Our decisions should not be influenced. All kinds of "extra" compensation or a show of gratitude could corrupt us to the favor of the more generous. Just as how bloggers and media would prefer attending events organized by those known for giving out better "tokens of appreciation".
