Police, Globe Telecom Security Team Nab 7 Broadband Fraudsters

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Globe Telecom’s intensified campaign against fraudsters led to the arrest of 7 fraudsters involved in the illegal sale of the company’s LTE modems.

The campaign is intended to protect its customers from illegal activities involving its products and services. “We strongly discourage our customers from purchasing internet connectivity devices from unauthorized dealers and instead entertain offers of various Globe products and services only from legitimate agents,” said Ronald Uychutin, Globe Vice President for Security and Anti-Fraud and Investigation Division. He added that Globe will continue to coordinate closely with police authorities in pursuing its campaign against fraudsters.

A series of entrapment operations jointed conducted by police and a Globe security team resulted in the arrest of 7 suspects involved in the illegal sale of Globe modems. Arrested were David King Esguerra, 33 years old, a resident of No. 79 Guimba, Nueva Ecija; John John Mamuyac, 28 years old, a resident of 19-C Camilo Osias St., Brgy. Kaligayahan, Quezon City; Marc Searle Arboleda, 25 years old and Ma. Joanna Garcia; 25 years old, both residing at No.119 Tabing Ilog St. Brgy. Aniban II, Bacoor City, Cavite; Michael Pascua, 29 years old, a resident of Block 2 Lot 2 Sunny Crest Royale Brgy. Salitran 2, Dasmariñas City; Thomas Jefferson, 33 years old, a resident of Block 3 Lot 1 Masalud Vill Brgy. Salinas 1, Bacoor City, Cavite; and Angeline Manlapao, 20 years old, a resident of Block 5 Lot 1 Nueve de Pebrero St., Brgy. Mauway, Mandaluyong City.

The entrapment operations conducted against the suspects were based on a list of online sellers of Globe LTE modems, either through OLX.com.ph or Facebook. With police personnel posing as online buyers, suspects agreed to meet them which led to their eventual arrests.

The suspects are believed to be engaged in a modus operandi that involves retrieval of LTE modems from legitimate customers on pretext of an upgrade or repair. The modems are then reconfigured and sold at a one-time cost payment in popular social online buy-and-sell sites such as OLX and even networking sites such as Facebook. Police recovered from the suspects numerous Globe LTE modems. Uychutin emphasized the company will continue to work closely with police authorities in pursuing fraudsters.

Can Micro Homes Solve the Global Housing Crisis?

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Size matters to some but in a world of land scarcity and a housing shortage epidemic, small micro sized homes are growing in popularity. The statistics are frightening: currently, more than 1.6 billion people live in substandard housing with 100 million people living without a home. It is estimated that up to 50 percent of the urban housing stock in South Asia and 25 percent in Latin America is of poor quality.

Alarmingly, UN studies estimate that by 2030 an additional 3 billion people—40 percent of the world’s population—will need access to housing. Inspired architects, realising that small is more efficient have come up with a possible solution: micro houses.

There is currently no definition for a microhouse; it can be a tiny home on wheels that looks like a garden shed or a slightly larger brick-and-mortar house with flexible interior layouts, what is common among the designs is a priority on making the most out of what limited space is available.

Top architects like Renzo Piano, known for London’s Shard is a trailblazer in the design of small homes; his Diogene Micro Home measures just 7.5 sq m (81 sqft) but surprisingly still has all the basics that you need for modern living. Inside there is a folding desk, composting onboard toilet, solar panels, and rainwater collection devices, so it makes the most of renewable energy sources also. Centrala Architects, have built what they say is the world’s narrowest house—The Keret House—in the former Jewish Ghetto in Warsaw. The complete home was constructed within a former alley and measures just 122 cm (48 in) at its widest.

The architects of 29sqm may not have been inspired when it came to naming their micro home but the ingenuity at play creating its semi-mezzanine structure is unrivaled, they fitted a bed area over the main wardrobe accessible via a small wooden staircase. This is a testament to their ability to get creative with a minimal space availability.

“We see micro homes playing an intrinsic part in minimizing the global housing shortage in the coming years,” said Kian Moini—co founder and managing director of Lamudi—the global property platform for the emerging markets. “Once the design concepts can be rolled out for the mass market, developers can construct thousands of these homes with just a small amount of land,” said Moini.

As soon as developers can figure out how best to both construct and market these micro homes there is sure to be a rapid increase in their production. A lot of people have an idea in their head that a home needs to be a certain size or their family might not have a comfortable lifestyle. These latest designs prove that under one tiny roof, you can find everything you need to have a high standard of home living.

Rallye Deutschland (WRC): Sébastien Ogier’s 35th WRC Victory

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Exactly 189 days since his last success in Sweden, Sébastien Ogier (VW/Michelin) returned to the top step of a WRC podium after collecting his second straight victory in Germany. Hyundai/Michelin’s Dani Sordo and Thierry Neuville were second and third, while Michelin scored a one-two finish in WRC2 with Skoda Factory drivers Lappi and Kopecky.

The ADAC Rallye Deutschland is sometimes referred to as the summer’s Rallye Monte-Carlo due to the complex tyre choices it frequently necessitates, and this year was no exception.

Tyre calls notably played a decisive role on Saturday when crews visited the narrow stages of Germany’s Saarland region and the notorious asphalt/concrete tracks of the Baumholder army ranges. Michelin’s crews ran every imaginable permutation of the H5 (hard) and S5 (soft) versions of the Pilot Sport in the changeable weather conditions.

Ogier (VW/Michelin) laid the foundations for his second Rallye Deutschland triumph on the Panzerplatte stages for which he chose a combination of S5s and H5s for the first visit, then S5s all-round for the afternoon’s repeat. The three-time world champion won both attempts at Panzerplatte Lange (40.80km) to conclude Day 2 with a safety margin of 33.4 seconds.

Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia went on to pocket their 35th world class victory and their third of the year to extend their lead at the top of the provisional points table. Meanwhile, the Volkswagen Polo R WRC (39 victories) has become the most successful car on Michelin rubber in the history of the FIA WRC.

The weekend produced a thrilling fight for second, third and fourth places. Early pace-setter Andreas Mikkelsen (VW/Michelin), Dani Sordo (Hyundai/Michelin) and Thierry Neuville (Hyundai/Michelin) were covered by just four seconds ahead of Sunday’s 60 kilometres of competitive action. The fastest time on SS15 promoted Sordo to second spot, while Neuville won SS16.

SS17 was cancelled, so the outcome was settled on the Power Stage (14.84km). Neuville was quickest again but his attempt to pass his Spanish team-mate failed by one-tenth of a second. Mikkelsen ended up fourth overall.

Ott Tanak’s late retirement on Saturday (Ford, alternator) handed fifth place to Hayden Paddon (Hyundai/Michelin) who was delayed by several errors early on. Mads Ostberg (Ford/Michelin) was sixth, ahead of WRC2 winner Esapekka Lappi who headed a one-two finish for Skoda Motorsport and Michelin. Jan Kopecky was second in the class, ahead of local hero Armin Kremer (Skoda) who was taking part in the event for the 16th time.

The first ‘clear’ asphalt round of the year claimed a number of victims. Jari-Matti Latvala (VW/Michelin, gearbox) and Eric Camilli (Ford/Michelin, accident) both lost big chunks of time, while Stéphane Lefebvre (Citroën/Michelin) had a big crash. Everyone at Michelin Motorsport wishes the Frenchman and his co-driver Gabin a speedy recovery.

Globe Telecom Promo Registration Number Changed to 8080

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Starting immediately, postpaid and prepaid mobile customers of Globe Telecom may use 8080, instead of 8888, in sending promo registrations through text or SMS. The changeover follows the company’s compliance with a government request to use 8888 as the government’s complaint hotline, which became operational last August 1as well. The substitution is also in support of nation-building.

As a transitory procedure, customers sending promo registrations to 8888 will receive response from 8080 effective immediately until November 30, when 8888 will no longer be available for Globe transactions. This means that promo registrations sent to 8888 from November 30 onwards will no longer be processed.

“As a telecommunications provider, we recognize the importance of communication for the government to effectively address loopholes in government service for the benefit of the country as a whole, thus our decision to give way to the government’s request to use 8888 as its complaint hotline,” Globe General Counsel Atty. Froilan Castelo said.

Aside from texting 8080 for promo registrations, Globe customers may also use *143# to generate a USSD code and register to a call, text or surfing promo of their choice.

In addition to giving way for the government’s request to utilize 8888 as a government complaint hotline, Globe is also providing access to both 911, the government’s emergency hotline and 8888 beginning last August 1. Globe is also providing inbound and outbound SMS accessibility for 2286 (Bato), a SMS hotline for the public to directly report incidents to the Philippine National Police.

The Palanca Awards is the longest-running literary competition in the Philippines and is considered as the gold standard in writing excellence. Named after the businessman and philanthropist Don Carlos Palanca Sr., it aims to both enrich Philippine Literature by giving incentives to writers and serve as a treasury of Philippine literary gems.

iPhone 7 Launch: Has Apple Lost Its Innovative Drive?

Wazzup Pilipinas!
"Water resistant, dual camera, with stereo speakers, no more wired headphones and... (finally) a longer battery life. I just don't know how long is "longer" but that "jet black" is so sexy." - MJ De Leon
"Wow! Guys!! The new iPhone is water resistant!! This is amazing, no other company have ever done this, Apple was the first!! <--- This is what I think the iTards are saying right now."- IJ Torres
"When will people accept the power of this brand? It's the iPhone vs. countless Android high end/midrange/China brands...but still winning?" - James De Guzman
September 7, 2016 was a big day in the tech world, as Apple held its annual launch event, where the iPhone 7 was revealed. The event was held at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco and was led by Tim Cook, CEO of Apple. The launch was said to be ordinary, except the wireless earpods, nothing was new and impressive. Many were disappointed because there was no real change from iPhone 6 or 6s. Has Apple lost its innovative drive?

I just loved the new double camera on the 7Plus... city pictures gonna get better! To say it challenges DSLR's is simply not true. First gen 1DS will still outperform an iPhone. It is simply the convenience. But the same feature is offered by the LG G5. It isn't a new feature. However, LG can't in-trench smoothness of system like iOS. Also, If you love double cameras you have to try new Hauwei P9 and Galaxy S7.

The new iPhone camera uses IPS Technology which performs 100 Billion operations every time we capture a photo within just 25 Milliseconds! This is really a supercomputer for phone camera.

How excited can one possibly get when the most talked about new feature of the world's most exciting smartphone manufacturer is the 'absence of a headphone jack'?! Lol!

Apple has ditched the headphone socket, this means that users will experience whole new wireless headphones. The wireless "AirPods" give 5 hours of listening time and charged within the case! Just plugin the lightning cable to the case. This headphone jack is a big disappointment. Millions of people still use corded headphones you know. It will include an adapter in the box, anyway so it's time to get with it then!!

The new Mario game is like a cross between Temple Run and a traditional side scrolling Mario game.

The new iWatch now comes with Pokémon Go, downloaded more than 500 million times. Trainers have walked more than 4.6 billion kilometers while playing.

Specifications:

Dust and water resistant because of redesigned interior components and structure
Wireless earpods called AirPods 5 hours battery, comes with charger, connects to Apple Watch, costs $159
Two DSLR-like 12 mp wide angle and telephoto cameras that shoot as one, optical zoom at 2x, digital zoom up to 10x
7mp FaceTime HD camera
Stereo speakers
New Home button
4.7" Retina HD display with wide color gamut
A10 Fusion chip - most powerful for a smartphone
Longest battery life is said to be for 24 hours
256GB internal storage
LTE advanced up to 450 Mbps
Best worldwide roaming
iOS 10
Pricing starts at $649 for iPhone7 and $749 for iPhone7Plus

Hong Kong and Singapore gets the iPhone 7 on September 16. No Philippines until end of September.

My 6s is an obsolete technology now.  Still haven't heard the "selling my kidney to buy the new iPhone 7" from anyone though.

Intensified Drive Versus Zika Virus Is Needed

Wazzup Pilipinas!

There is a need for an intensified government prevention and detection drive against the Zika virus after a sixth case was confirmed by the Department of Health (DOH) yesterday.

The DOH should equip the barangay health centers, as they are the frontline service providers that can aid the government in the monitoring and providing of immediate care to those infected with Zika virus especially the pregnant women.

“I support the on-going preparations and ground work of the Department of Health to strengthen its information, detection and monitoring drive to prevent the further spread of the disease, and to provide immediate care to those infected with the virus. Kailangan nating suportahan ang ginagawang hakbang ng ating DOH at mga lokal na pamahalaan upang mapanatiling ligtas ang ating pamayanan mula sa komplikasyon na dulot ng Zika virus,” Senator Risa Hontiveros said.

“Anti-Zika Virus packets”

The DOH to provide anti-Zika virus packets to barangay health units to protect their constituencies from the virus. The packets should contain mosquito nets, mosquito repellents, condoms and reading materials on the virus. She said the Zika virus is spread by mosquito bites during the day and night, and through unprotected sex from a person who has Zika.

2017 budget

The DOH should ensure that funding for these kind of health-related issues are included in the proposed 2017 health budget in order for the government to immediately and properly respond to the needs of the public,” she added.

Meanwhile, Hontiveros lauded the DOH action in including Zika virus in its Philippine Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response System, which reports within 24 hours all suspected cases of Zika virus to the Epidemiology Bureau of the health department.

Hontiveros also advised overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to immediately contact the Philippine embassy or consulates once the epidemic of Zika spreads in their country of work of if they showed symptoms of the virus. She said that Filipinos should seek medical intervention once they experience fever equal to or higher than 38 degrees centigrade for more than two days, conjunctivitis, skin rash, headache, muscle pain, joint pain, body weakness and pain behind the eyes.

The Senator said that per DOH advisory, patients who experienced those symptoms within two weeks after traveling from countries with confirmed reported cases of Zika virus and patients who have a history of Guillain-Barre syndrome should seek immediate medical intervention.

She, however, said that Filipinos should get accurate information from the DOH and other reputed medical institutions regarding Zika virus and refrain from sharing information from unauthorized sources.

Mexican Modernity Comes to Yuchengco Museum this September

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Yuchengco Museum presents Mexican Modernity: 20th Century Paintings from the Zapanta Mexican Art Collection, a touring exhibition of Mexican modern and contemporary art, from September 17 to November 24, 2016. 40 paintings, drawings, fine art prints, and mixed media works from Mexico's most prominent artists are featured in the exhibition.

Mexican Modernity highlights artworks from Mexico’s early masters, muralists, women artists, and artists of the La Ruptura and Oaxacan movements. Among the best-known artists on exhibit are Frida Kahlo, Jose Clemente Orozco, Diego Rivera, and Rufino Tamayo. Mexican Modernity illustrates the development of Mexico's painterly styles and social representations, from the more European-influenced compositions to the predominantly indigenous themes that appeared as Mexico sought to distinguish itself from its Spanish colonial past.

The exhibition is curated by Gregorio Luke, an expert on Mexican and Latin American art and culture, and co-curated by Dr. Florian Knothe, Director of the University Museum and Art Gallery of the University of Hong Kong. Mexican Modernity was first shown in Hong Kong, and will be on view at Yuchengco Museum until November 24, 2016.

The collection owned by Dr. Richard and Rebecca Zapanta comes to Asia from Los Angeles, California. Dr. Zapanta is a fourth-generation Mexican-American who traces a part of his ancestry to the Philippines. The idea for the traveling exhibition came from his desire to share his Mexican heritage to Filipinos, knowing of the historical Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade that linked the Philippines and Mexico from the 16th to the 19th centuries.

World-Renowned Calisthenics Guru Hit Richards Wants to Introduce More Filipinos to Calisthenics

Wazzup Pilipinas!

World-renowned calisthenics guru and celebrity trainer Hit Richards, who hails from New York City, wants to introduce more Filipinos to calisthenics. Calisthenics, an intense workout wherein one uses bodyweight and bodyweight movements, is currently very popular in other countries.

Hit Richards, who trains and handles clients from various cities such as New York, Paris and Moscow says, “I’ve been hearing good things about the Philippines, specially about its athletes. I’ve also read about the Olympic Silver medalist (Hidlyn Diaz). In my humble opinion, it is good to encourage young people to get into sports; and calisthenics in particular is one sport wherein you don’t need a lot of money to be fit. You also don’t need expensive equipment nor a gym membership. You can do calisthenics anywhere, in parks, your homes, gyms, etc. It is also one sport which can complement your training if you’re an athlete. So I want to bring calisthenics to the Philippines one of these days and encourage Filipinos to love the sport as much as I do.”

“I’ve also read somewhere that some athletes have difficulty training because of the lack of equipment. Maybe calisthenics can help, because all you need is to use your bodyweight to be able to get the results you want,” he says.

Richards, who has 15 international certifications from the International Fitness Professionals Association (IFPA) for personal training, started his business Calisthenics Kingz in 2007, way before the sport became popular in other countries. He counts among his list of prominent clients musician Busta Rhymes, NFL players such as Chad Ochocinco, and other A-list Hollywood actors.

DDoS Attacks in Asia-Pacific Region Increased by 43% — IPC

Wazzup Pilipinas!

According to IPC (IP Converge Data Services, Inc.), the country’s pioneer DDoS Mitigation service provider, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks increased 43% percent to 34,000 attacks in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, citing a report by its partner Nexusguard, global leader in DDoS mitigation.

The study was conducted throughout the second quarter of this year and revealed an 83% increase in attacks worldwide. Although the APAC region only saw an increase a bit over half of the global total, attack durations were longer compared to global incidents. Nexusguard says that this is most likely due to many attack tools with set duration periods.

The largest increase was seen in Hong Kong, where attacks rose an astonishing 57%. China, which saw a 50% increase in attacks, is the number one target in the region. According to the report, over the course of a month a Chinese website was attacked 41 times.

The Philippines on the other hand is one of the countries who experienced the least DDoS attacks, together with Indonesia and Malaysia.

Basilan Kid, 11 Other Young Football Aspirants to Represent PH in Astro Kem Bola Training Camp in KL

Wazzup Pilipinas!

After almost two months of traveling around the country, Globe Telecom has finally picked 12 of the best young aspiring football players to represent the Philippines in the prestigious Astro Kem Bola Advanced Training Programme in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from September 13-17, 2016.

The qualifiers, aged 10-12, include Roniel Vincent Delumpines, a sixth grader from Isabela City, Basilan who even traveled eight hours by boat and 15 hours by land just to reach Davao City where one of the TM Football Para sa Bayan (TM FPSB) camps of Globe was held.

TM FPSB was tapped by Astro Kasih, the corporate foundation and corporate social responsibility arm of Malaysian media and entertainment powerhouse Astro, to be its partner in discovering talented kids and helping them further harness their craft. This is in line with Globe Telecom’s sports advocacy which aims to uplift the lives of the youth especially those from the marginalized sector and provide them with a platform to showcase their talents.

“The Astro Kem Bola programme aims to provide a comprehensive learning and football development experience. Through it, we have seen talented kids grow into well-rounded athletes playing in the Malaysian national youth team on an international platform. We are privileged to be able to play a role in their development and look forward to do the same for the youth of Philippines and other ASEAN countries,” said Datuk David Michael Yap, Vice President - Community Affairs of Astro.

Delumpines is joined by Leoven Jay Gatungay, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental; Lance Lawrence Locsin, Bacolod City, Negros Occidental; Martin Joshua Meriño, Binan, Laguna; and Jared Alexander Peña and Ryan Philip Johansson both from Metro Manila.

For the girls division, the representatives include two from Davao City – Jasmine Casandra Agustin and Isabelle Renee Taojo; three from Metro Manila – Astrid Heiress Ignacio, Stella Maria Divino, and Ysabella Samonte; and Mikaela Jacqueline Villacin from Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.

The children were scouted from some 600 young athletes who participated in the TM football clinics held in Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo; Talisay City, Negros Occidental; Davao City; and Metro Manila. They will compete with their counterparts from Singapore and Malaysia to get a chance to fly to Europe for two weeks of all-expense paid professional football training in December this year.

“For four years now, Globe through TM Football Para sa Bayan has been reaching out to kids especially those from the countryside and from the marginalized sector in order to develop their skills and give them the opportunity to secure a good future, Thus, we are thankful to Astro for partnering with us in this undertaking which we believe will help uplift the lives of the youth and bring them closer to their dreams,” said Fernando Esguerra, Globe Director for Citizenship.

The kids were selected not only based on talent but also on other criteria such a teamwork; discipline, behavior and sportsmanship; communication on and off the pitch; positive attitude towards teammates, volunteers, and coaches; ability to listen to instructions; and good personality.

Ray Guinoo, TM Portfolio and Brand Head added: “TM, being a brand for the youth, is always after the development of our young people. One of the ways to do this is through TM Football Para sa Bayan. We are using the power of sports to instill in the youth the importance of possessing the right attitude, good values, and a good education. Hopefully, through the sports communities and the tie up with Astro, we can create more opportunities for the kids across the country.”

The TM football clinics were handled by Green Archers United (GAU), a professional football league which has been Globe Telecom’s implementing partner in developing the football grassroots program.

Train to Busan Full Movie Clickbaits and Memes for Zombie-Loving Moviegoers

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Everyone's raving about one of the newest zombie movie "Train to Busan."

Forget about George Romero's blockbuster zombie flicks and all the rest of the movies with zombie-like infestations leading to the apocalypse. This year it's all about zombies on trains. The Koreans know how to make a zombie film, that's for sure. This is f*cking scary!

Where you among those who anticipated watching the movie? or did you watch out for leakages of the movie online?  There were so many clickbaits tempting netizens to click so they can watch the movie in full, but instead all they got were the trailers and cut-scenes, or the links leading to a site which required them to register. Lol!

Memes of the movie have surfaced as well, and of course we would find the ones pertaining to teh local Philippine scene a lot more funnier because we can relate.

While a zombie-virus breaks out in South Korea, passengers struggle to survive on the train from Seoul to Busan. What came into my mind is when the same scenario hits the Philippines, we would surely be unable to run. Aside from the crowded train stations (MRT and LRT), the entire length of the train rides are too short. Zombies will surely infect us all in no time.

The movie is about Sok-woo and his daughter Soo-ahn who both boarded the KTX, a fast train that shall bring them from Seoul to Busan. But right at the moment of their departure, the train station is overrun by zombies which kill the train driver and several others, while most of the passengers were unaware.

Martial Law is declared in the country as the mysterious viral outbreak pushes Korea into a state of emergency. Those on an express train to Busan soon learned of the infected within their midst. The virus outbreak in the train soon turns more passengers into zombies and all hell breaks loose. The rest of the passengers must now fight for their own survival.

By the looks of it, the train ride was the only safe place to be while the rest of the world is in a zombie apocalypse. Their only hope is to reach Busan which was said to be the only place safe from zombies.

In the Philippines, I don't think there is no place safe to run as you could never really run due to the immense population of the country. Do we even have a designated place assigned by the government where people can feel safe and secure? Unlike during floods and typhoons, the classrooms, covered courts and gyms could not protect the people from zombie attacks.

The Korean movie continues to be a huge success all over the world. The film set a record as the first Korean film of 2016 to break the audience record with over 10 million theatergoers. And it has remarkably grossed US$80,201,768 worldwide.

Netizens, especially those who have watched the movie already, couldn't stop themselves in comparing Train to Busan with Train to Taft - how we would fare if the similar incident occurred in the Philippines? Which would be spookier? Do we ever have a chance to survive if it happens at our very own Metro Rail Transit or Light Rail Transit?
