Gift Ideas For All Occasions: Peking Duck Ham and Pinoy Pork Ham Delivered Right to Your Doorstep

Wazzup Pilipinas!

In 2005, while observing local ducks raised by relatives in Nueva Ecija, the owner of True Deli Cafe thought of how many varieties of poultry and meat have become estranged from the Manilenyo palate. “Not entirely their fault,” she thought, as very little of these flavorful Filipino delicacies ever reach the city shops. The scarcity gave rise to unfamiliarity which created the gustatory indifference which exists today.

Challenged by this realization, the owner began to experiment with duck to come up with a product to bridge the unfamiliar with something familiar: Duck Ham, which became an overnight commercial success. With supply in hand, she tackled distribution: a deli-restaurant she called True Deli Cafe.

True Deli Cafe, a casual dining restaurant that serves regional dishes highlighting the diversity of local flavors, has some great gift ideas for the holiday season. They are offering hams delivered right to your doorsteps. The hams are made available for delivery so we can enjoy True Deli's creations in our own home.

We were fortunate enough to get our hands, and taste buds, on these delicious smoked ham treats - Pinoy Pork Ham and Peking Duck Ham.

But these are not your ordinary hams that you can buy from your favorite supermarket or grocery. They are only available exclusive at True Deli Cafe which is located at GMA-Kamuning EDSA just beside the MRT. It's literally right beside and connected at the southbound side of the MRT. To be specific, the address is Upper Ground Floor, Victoria Station 1. 5 Sergeant Esguerra Avenue, South Triangle, Quezon City.

What's great is that you can conveniently order these hams for dine in, take-out or delivery. Aside from the whole hams, they also have sliced versions, for both the Pinoy Pork and Peking Duck, that are good enough for sharing with friends or families. This is why my family and I decided to try them out at their restaurant too before actually buying the whole ones. Since we were told that the hams will be good for 3 months from the date of purchase (as long as it's in the freezer) we could readily buy some as early as now to last until or even after Christmas or the New Year.

I brought my wife and 2nd oldest son since my eldest daughter was out attending a seminar the day we visited, and my "bunso" or youngest was never the outgoing type. He would rather play with his tablet rather than go out and feast on delectable dishes.

First bite, and we were definitely hooked. Among the two kinds of hams, our favorite was the Peking Duck Ham. It may be a little bit more expensive than the Pinoy Pork Ham, but it was all worth the additional hundreds of pesos. The Peking Duck Ham is absolutely a winner. The Pinoy Pork Ham is not too far. But since I am more into the chicken-like variety, my ultimate choice is the Peking Duck. Considering not too many offer this kind of food choice, we never hesitated in buying one. However, the Pinoy Pork Ham was a star of its own because of the sweet taste most Filipinos love.

My youngest couldn't resist munching on the hams as soon as they were served at home. But we only allowed him to try out a few slices and stored the remaining in our freezer so they can be cooked on Christmas eve.

The Pinoy Pork Ham is only Php 1520, while the Peking Duck Ham is Php 1950. Sliced Pinoy Pork Ham (250 grams) is Php 350 and the Sliced Peking Duck Ham (boneless 250 grams) is Php 550. Now, those are very reasonable prices that you'll truly take notice.

I have prepared a video shoot for the hams but since I needed to release this story before Christmas Day, I will publish the video on a later date that's hopefully before Christmas. You can watch out for it at our YouTube channel at http://www.YouTube.com/user/wazzuppilipinas
