"Memorial Day is more than just a day off, an excellent occasion for a backyard barbeque or a chance to travel, though all of those awesome staples ultimately speak to the holiday’s true spirit. "
Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States observed on the last Monday of May. It was formerly known as Decoration Day and commemorates all men and women who have died in military service for the United States. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day.

May 29, 2016 marked the 148th Memorial Day ceremony held at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial.

The above photo shows U.S. Ambassador to the Philippine, Philip Goldberg visits several of the graves at Manila American Cemetery, Bonifacio Global City, Fort Bonifacio.

During the ceremony several hundred guests watched the march on of both Philippines and United States Colors, listened to heartfelt remarks honoring fallen heroes, witnessed the annual wreath laying ceremony, and took time to visit many of the over 17,000 graves located at the cemetery.

Guests also walked through the hemicycles, a memorial where the Tablets of the Missing are located, which bear more than 36,000 names of Philippine and U.S. service members who gave their lives in service of their country.

Several wreaths lined the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial walls near the chapel. Among them, a wreath with a simple, but powerful message, “We remember.”

Among the wreaths line the Manila American Cemetery walls are two dedicated to the Battle of Bataan, where both U.S. and Philippines forces fought valiantly against great odds and is representative of the shoulder-to-shoulder ties that the Philippines and U.S. armed forces share.
