Boix House Redux Project: Crowdfunding a Heritage House in Manila

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Want to save a heritage house? A non-profit organization called the Kapitbahayan sa Kalye Bautista atbp. Lugar, Inc. (KKB) has started a crowdfunding initiative to restore the historic Kasa Boix and transform it into a community center and creative space.

The Kasa Boix was considered an architectural gem in its time. It was built in the neo-Renaissance style along Barbosa (now Bautista) St. in Quiapo by Don Marciano Teotico in 1895. Over the years, the house was used as a dormitory and an office, among others. Notable people who lived within its halls include former president Manuel L. Quezon and poet/journalist Jose R. Teotico. The house is adjacent to Bahay Nakpil-Bautista, also a historic heritage house, where heroes Julio Nakpil and Gregoria de Jesus lived.

Now, Kasa Boix has visible deteriorations and a structural engineer is urgently needed to assess its stability and commend retrofitting guidelines. This is why KKB is starting a crowdfunding effort to help save Kasa Boix. The group envisions the house to be adaptively reused as a community-cum-creative space for the enjoyment of the residents in Quiapo as well to serve as a model of conserving other heritage sites.

Cyber Literacy Talk on June 30

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The turn of the 21st century has seen the integration of the Internet within the lives of most people. At this day and age, most people have a myriad of devices on-hand that enable them to stay connected and share information with whoever they want to, regardless of where they might be.

That said, while cyberspace has granted people such unprecedented connectivity and information-sharing, it can prove to be a dangerous place to tread, especially for those who are unaware. High school students, for instance, comprise a big part of the population that spend a considerable amount of time surfing the Internet and Social Networks. Such group of people are susceptible to the various risks and dangers lurking in cyberspace. Vital information such as home addresses, account details, and other confidential documents can be stolen from right under their noses, and the aftermath of such information theft can render them powerless.

Apart from information theft, the Internet has a vicarious culture where users can anonymously target other users with harsh and mean-spirited comments and retorts; for an uninitiated Internet user, such online attacks can become anywhere from a mild nuisance to a serious emotional issue.

On that note, the Cybersecurity Division of the DOST-ICT Office knows that the Internet can be used to create a positive change as long as the public is properly equipped to handle such technology. As such, the Cybersecurity division shall hold a Cyber Literacy Talk on the 30th of June.

Women Dominate Online Property Search in the Philippines

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Similar to the West, the Philippines is the only Asian country where Lamudi is present where women are the primary users of real estate websites, according to new data from the global property portal.

The Philippines joins Latin American countries Colombia, Peru, and Mexico, where women are emerging as the dominant decision-makers when searching for property online. According to data, 64 percent of online property seekers in the Philippines are women.

In contrast, onsite data from the website reveals that men account for the majority of users searching for real estate to buy or rent in the emerging markets. In countries such as Nigeria, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, as many as three-quarters of online property-seekers are male. Male house-hunters also significantly outnumber women in the online property search process in Ghana (where 68 percent of users are men), Tanzania (68 percent), Saudi Arabia (63 percent), and Senegal (60 percent).

Lamudi’s findings for the Philippines echo research conducted in the West, which has shown that women are the primary users of online property portals. In the United States, for example, 53 percent of people who sign up to buy or sell real estate online are female, figures from Realtor.org show.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY by Gian Cruz

Wazzup Pilipinas!

A visual autobiography conveys an array of masquerades. The inaccessible becomes accessible and vice versa. The photographer dissipates into the currency of images and this pre-supposed self is often just felt through fragments or mere traces of himself.

Through autobiography, Cruz presents an examination of the self in the present meddling between reality and imagined fictions. This brings together his works for the last three years. Altogether, this exhibition is a culmination of his multiple impressions concerning his identity with the camera as a mental and physical barrier that distances him from himself while also bringing him closer to himself. It also takes places in particular spaces recollecting the tropes of familiar and the unfamiliar, reassessing his places and cities of dwelling into his own particular aesthetic field. And in between these two polarities, lies the ambiguous tropes of elsewheres that add another layer to the narratives he creates by way of his images.

This takes us to fragments of crucial bodies of work in his catalogue from his paradoxical and humorous self-portraits called You as Me wherein he puts together self-portraits using other people to stand in for him to his playful contradiction of a personal documentary through Artificial Memory. Meanwhile, his study of human bodies within the realm of the global and the universal presupposes subjective desires on his subjects working alongside the operative of intimacy through corps tendu while working alongside the landscape of different heres and theres from his archives.

Carlo Vergara's Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady - The Repeat

Wazzup Pilipinas!

"Anyone can be a hero. Anyone can be a SUPER hero. And most anything is possible, even the success of a crazy show such as Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady"- Carlo Vergara

Due to insistent public clamor, Manila’s newest theater group Dalanghita Productions, proudly brings back the highly-acclaimed “KUNG PAANO AKO NAGING LEADING LADY THE MUSICAL” in a move-over engagement beginning July 3 at Onstage, Greenbelt 1, Makati City.

This is the story of two sisters named MELY and VIVA who both yearn to fulfill their dreams. Their sibling relationship and rivalry becomes more complicated due to an unsettled past and a budding romance, all in the context of an ongoing war between the superhero and supervillain teams. Being a maid is tough enough, but when Mely lands a job under a group of superheroes, she steps up to the unique challenge for the sake of her family. The musical takes us through the journey of the characters as each tries to find his/her place in the world where superheroes and supervillains exist.

The comic book writer mentioned that "Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady is a simple story of a woman who strives to make something of her life for the benefit of those she loves. It is a story of her sister as well, who believes that fate will somehow give her the opportunity to prove her worth."

Durables Versus Disposables

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Many homemakers, in their desire to save money and time, resort to using plastic bags and Styrofoam products as food containers. These are relatively cheap and do not need to be cleaned after use.

However, it is not advisable to use these disposable food containers for a number of reasons. First, these cheap items are made of flimsy material and are prone to breakage. You do not want to spill food on your bag and clothes, do you? It is better to use containers that can be sealed tightly and can be easily opened. Klio Food Keepers have an easy-to-open lid design that also allows secure fastening.

Second, you run the risk of having toxic chemicals leach into your food. Styrofoam leaches carcinogenic materials, especially when it comes into contact with hot food. On the other hand, Klio products are guaranteed safe for food storage. It is also microwave and freezer-safe, unlike some disposable food containers.

Gullible's Travels: Anong Klaseng Bloggers Kayo?

Wazzup Pilipinas!

There has been fake FB accounts posting fake events for bloggers. Unfortunately, many bloggers have been signing up, both veteran and newbies are victimized by this scumbag who has so much time in his wretched life that he wants to make fun out of bloggers especially those who are just so passionate in joining every event available.

What is so alarming is when other bloggers laugh at the ones who fall prey to these scammers. They would criticize and even create threads to talk behind the backs of the victims. Instead of cursing the scammer, they would humiliate the victims and say "Anong klaseng bloggers kayo" implying the bloggers who signed up could not easily sense that it was a scam, and will make them look greedy for every event out there.

Look at the signs they say, but AFAIK, some event organizers do not really reveal everything on their posts and details are only given to only those chosen. This is why there is a sign-up. Not everyone who signs up will be contacted and selected for the event.

Though it is true that bloggers also need to verify the identity of the event organizer, some bloggers would sign-up immediately before they ran out of slots. They get the details later because the most important right now is to get in.

This is why some bloggers would sign-up at multiple events even if they are all happening at the same time. Some bloggers do this so they can choose which one they deem better or worth their time. Though I don't really encourage such habits because the losing party here would be the event organizers. What would you feel if someone signed up at your event then changes his or her mind the last minute?
