Android One Smartphones from Google Now Available in the Philippines

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Google Philippines is proud to bring to the country the Android One program with the aim of bringing high-quality smartphones to as many Filipinos as possible. While 1.75 billion people already have smartphones, over 5 billion more do not.

Partnering initially with two leading mobile phone providers Cherry Mobile and MyPhone, there will be the Cherry One and MyPhone Uno smartphones implementing the Android One platform, that comes with the latest version of Android, available in many retail stores nationwide. Lollipop is said to be the fastest and most responsive Android version being 2x faster than the previous one.

More of the features were introduced to members of the media by Google Vice President of Product Management Casear Sengupta during the grand launch held at Whitespace Pasong Tamo in Makati last February 17. It was only during that day when we found out what the mysterious Google announcement was all about. the invitation to the event was sort of vague but I guess many of the other attendees had a hunch since the Philippines was not the first country to receive a similar launch.

Google has been working with hardware partners in shipping these devices in multiple countries around the world namely India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and now the Philippines.

The battery life has been extended up to 90 minutes with the battery saver feature, quick settings to conserve data, Android's new look, material design, responsive natural motion, realistic lighting and shadows, and bold, edge-to-edge graphics make the experiences more beautiful.

Smart and Sun will help Android One users get free over-the-air updates to the Android OS as well as certain amounts of app downloads from Google Play for the first six months, while Globe will enable better access to the Internet through its robust network.

The data compression feature also reduced the data costs for Android One users in the Philippines.

YouTube users can now watch videos offline. After tapping the offline icon in the YouTube app, certain videos can be played back without an Internet connection for up to 48 hours. This means great news for those fans of the likes of Mikey Bustos and Bogart the Explorer who are YouTube sensations.

Since the Philippines is the 2nd largest Internet market in SouthEast Asia and 6th in Asia, the country has been chosen as one of the lucky ones to experience this campaign. This year alone, 10 million Filipinos are expected to engage with the Internet for the first time using their smartphones. In the next two years, the country is expected to overtake Korea's Internet population as it reaches 66% Internet penetration.

I am fortunate to be the lucky ones among the 1.5 billion users who have easy access to smartphones in our country but knowing that there are still a lot of people who can't afford the same luxury we should be grateful that Google is making the effort to launch this type of campaigns.

Here's to wishing success for the program. We are all aware that the trend leads to online access of information. Soon we may lose all types of printed and even televised media to make way for better online access of information for everyone. There is nothing the online world can't do with the power of the Internet and the corresponding devices that can be used. We can see how they are quickly developed and how openly the masses welcome these advancement in technology. The new generation is fascinated with these technology that they are totally immersed with the lifestyle.
