Phil-Bike Expo 2014: The Philippines' First Biking Expo Holds Press Conference

Wazzup Pilipinas!

I believe it's high time we fully support all bicycle-related efforts so our country can also benefit from the less pollution brought about by the excessive reliance to automotive vehicles that emit dangerous smokes and fumes into our environment - in the air that we all breathe in.

If we cannot control the aggressively fluctuating price of oil and other related products, we might as well make an effort to search for an alternative, and if we cannot get rid of all the junk food that has proliferated in many fast food chains and groceries, then we could at least get enough exercise - and this is where bicycles come in.

Not only are bikes a healthier means of getting from one point to another, it really would create a better world with fresh and clean air. If everyone else would go back to the golden ways during the older days when there were plenty of reasons why we could stay fit and healthy.

Be ready to see amazing bikes of all kinds on November 15 and 16, 2014 at the very first Philippine Bike Expo in the country. The Phil-Bike Expo 2014 press conference was held yesterday, November 7, 2014, and  the organizers promising not only a multitude of bicycles from imported brands to locally made ones where some were made from bamboo, and the cool foldable bikes that will be so convenient to carry and could very well encourage people to go biking instead of using their cars.

Kaspersky Lab Survey Shows 1 in 8 Users Do Not Believe in Cyberthreats

Wazzup Pilipinas!

A survey said that Internet users don’t believe that cyberattacks are real and are only overstated by Internet security companies like Kaspersky Lab. An estimate of 13% of Internet users do not believe that cyberattacks are real. This is according to a recent survey carried out jointly by B2B International and Kaspersky Lab.

They feel that the threat is exaggerated by Internet security companies. However, this complacency leaves them without any protection against a risk that threatens their data and virtual lives every day.

According to statistics, even people who accept that cyberthreats are real are not always convinced they need protection against these threats. Specifically, only 22% of respondents believe they can be targeted by cybercriminals.

However, in reality any person’s device could be of interest to attackers. Even if the owner does not store valuable data on the device and does not carry out financial transactions online, cybercriminals can make use of any computer, smartphone or tablet – perhaps by turning it into a bot that sends spam, carries out DDoS attacks or sends phishing links via instant messaging and email.

Almost a third (32%) of users are not worried that their online accounts could be compromised, or are even oblivious to this risk.

Five Smartphone Trends that May Change the Filipino Real Estate Market in 2015

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Just like in other fields, the rise of smartphones will change the real estate game is played in the Philippines in 2015. The changes are actually almost evident already as more and more companies are making their online presence and considering mobile presence as part of their business strategy.

It goes without saying that the Philippines’ mobile Internet landscape is fast evolving. Smartphone penetration, although relatively low at 15 percent, has been growing over the last couple of years. It is expected to leap to 50 percent in 2015.

Filipinos do not leave home without their smartphones. We book taxis, check road traffic conditions, and purchase gadgets and shoes using our smartphones. Mobile apps even proved very useful when Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) struck the Visayas Region in late 2013, mobilizing an army of volunteers and a massive relief drive.

Indeed, smartphones have become the place where Filipinos research everything, including real estate. This presents a huge opportunity for the industry.

With these developments, Lamudi has compiled a list of smartphone trends that could stand to change Filipino real estate in 2015.

Presenting the "Romeo & Juliet The Musical" by Kids Acts Philippines

Wazzup Pilipinas!

It's been years since I watched a live musical play. The last one was a ballet show featuring Lisa Macuja, one of Manila's famed ballerinas at Aliw Theater, CCP. A few weeks ago, I had a chance to watch another live musical play this time just a few blocks from Aliw which is in Star Theater for the "Romeo & Juliet The Musical" by Kids Acts Philippines. This play as well all know is a reenactment of William Shakespeare's famous novel but it was made it clear by the production that it will be performed without sacrificing the original texts of the author to let young adults understand and comprehend on how the play is written. The dialogues are sung with full observance of how phrases are being read.

Watching these young actors and actresses portraying the characters was like me being transported when I was a student because I used to memorize these same exact lines just to pass our English literary subject. I wished we should have watched a play like this before because the learning is much better from watching than just merely reading a full text about it.

Though I find it hard to keep up with the fast conversation of the characters, maybe because the lines are written in heavy medieval English. I was also sitting beside my fellow bloggers they also say the same thing. I think it is better if they can also have a Tagalog version of "Romeo & Juliet The Musical". This does not mean though that we doubt the capabilities of the actors by any means but I think we can have this play closer to our hearts if spoken in our language.

Learn About a More Secure Way to Do Your Online Christmas Shopping

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Our lifestyle continues to change as many life-changing conveniences are quickly emerging and becoming so easy to use. Many people are now becoming more comfortable buying stuff online especially using their portable and handy smartphones. The Internet had indeed opened so many opportunities for other technologies to sprung up and be noticed.

Right now, mobile apps are in the verge of ruling the e-commerce world, if not yet considered as claimed and conquered. A lot of start-ups have made a name for themselves with primarily the online community to thank for. Of course, there's so many potential to become a lot bigger, and more financially rewarding.

Take for instance online shopping. It was noted that a 39% increase was established compared to last year’s second quarter based from an infographic released by Realex. This only goes to show that online transactions are still on the rise and will continue to increase in a quarterly basis.

But is it really safe and secure already to deal with online transactions? Though there may be a few scams going around trying to dissuade people to trust online deals, there are so many initiatives and efforts to make our online dealings better than physically being there. This is very helpful now that the Christmas season is so very near, and many of us would like to escape the crowded shopping malls when buying for our season gifts.

Shoppers all over the Philippines can now have a more secure online transaction with the Lamido Safepay – the escrow service of Lamido that allows consumers to avoid fraudulent transactions on the internet.

Lamido has ensured that online transactions are more secure with its effort to launch the Lamido Safepay. It is expected that in the coming months, Lamido Safepay will be the most preferred payment option by most merchant in the Lamido’s online buy and sell platform.

Wazzup Pilipinas Original Short Stories Series: Love My Lie

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Back when I was in elementary, I only have few friends because as the Top 1 in the class, everyone thought that I’m a nerd. So as to fit in, I prove them wrong. I observed their acts every day. I know in myself that if I act and talk the way they do, they would definitely befriend me, so I did. Yes I already fit in but I’m not that comfortable. I lost the real me. I sacrificed my happiness and identity just to fit in.

I correlate my past to the story that I had written. Just like anyone else, I want attention. But attention can’t be asked from someone, it should be given, just like love.

Our story below tells about a typical wife who craves for her husband’s attention. Rebecca suspects Sam for having a mistress. She jumped to that conclusion because according to her, Sam’s always out for business trips and doesn’t bother to have a quality time with her. Sam was astonished to hear that from her. He got annoyed that Rebecca wasn’t considering the facts that he is a Company Executive Officer and he’s working so hard for their future.

Craving for her husband’s attention, Rebecca pretended that she has a breast cancer. She asked Lauren, her best friend, to do her fake medical reports and to teach her how she should act and look like as a cancer patient. After knowing Rebecca’s condition, he immediately took a leave in his office to be able to make it up to his wife.

Rebecca’s enjoying the deeds for already two months, until one day when Lauren called thru telephone. She told Rebecca that Sam’s always calling her, crying because of Rebecca’s phony condition. It’s Lauren’s conscience that is bugging her so she decided to end their plan by quitting as Rebecca’s fake doctor.

Lies kill relationships. But what if the only choice left is to lie? Will you have the guts to risk your relationship?

“What time did you arrive last night?” asked Rebecca who’s having a cup of coffee.

“Around 12 midnight? I’m not that sure. By the way, we’ll be having a company outing slash seminar in Hongkong next week. We’re going to stay there for like three days.” said Sam who’s been evidently in a rush.

Rebecca stood up. “What? Last week, you just arrived from Pangasinan. Last night, you just arrived from Baguio. And now, you’re telling that you’ll be leaving again?”

“Look Rebecca! I’m the Company Executive Officer and you’re expecting that I would only sit there in my office doing nothing?” He went to the door but Rebecca gripped his hands to stop him.

“Do you still love me, Sam? Answer me! For the past few months, it seems like you just go home to sleep with me. And to inform you, we never had a quality time together for two months! Two months Sam!”

Sam was dumbfounded to see Rebecca’s expression. She had never been that mad before. Rebecca continued, “Why can’t you answer me? O’ wait! Maybe I’m wrong! Because the truth is you have a mistress! Are you having a secret relationship with..”

“What are you saying Rebecca? All this time, I’m working so hard for you. In return, I want you to appreciate me. I just want to feel appreciated. That’s all Rebecca! But what were you thinking? That I have a mistress? That I’m having a secret relationship with someone? How paranoid!” Sam left and slammed the door.

All of a sudden, Rebecca found herself alone in their house, again. It has been always like that. At first, she tries to understand Sam’s situation, that as a CEO, he always has a propensity to be busy but eventually, Rebecca got tired. If Sam wants appreciation, what Rebecca wants is attention. Actually, she’s craving for it. She’s just missing his other half so much. Desperate to get what she wants, she thought of a plan, a plan that would surely win his husband’s attention back.

Rebecca mocked that she has a breast cancer. That’s how immature she is. That’s how eager she is to have her husband’s attention. She did everything to make her plan work. She even hired Lauren, her bestfriend, who works as a doctor to do her medical reports and to teach her how a cancer patient should act or look like. As Rebecca informed her about her “sickness”, he immediately took a leave to take her of his wife and also, to have a quality time with her.

`”I’ll make it up to you Rebecca. I’m really sorry if I was too busy to the point that I already forgot my duty as your husband. I’ll make it up to you, I swear. From now on, I won’t leave your side anymore. “said Sam to Rebecca who’s lying on her bed trying to look ill.

Rebecca was so pleased because Sam’s so hooked to her story. Days, weeks, months had passed. Rebecca’s enjoying the deeds. Sam never leaves her and he was sweeter than ever before. Everything was perfect but it’s true that lies can’t be kept forever. Whether you like it or not, everything would be revealed at the end.

“Hello Lauren! How can I help you?” asked Rebecca to Lauren who called thru phone.

“Let’s stop this.”

“Stop what?”

“This stupid plan. Rebecca, my conscience has been bugging me for two months. Sam’s been calling me almost every day. He always checks up on you. He cries and it’s upsetting to know that I’m one of the reasons of his tears. I can’t be your fake doctor anymore. I’m sorry.”

“No! You can’t just leave me like that. You’re my bestfriend, you know that well. You just can’t leave me hanging.”

“Yes, I’m your bestfriend. And as your bestfriend, Rebecca please, I’m begging you. Let’s stop this. It’s Sam. He’s living in a lie for months. Aren’t you scared that if Sam knew this stupid plan of yours, she would be mad at you big time? Or even worse, leave you? I’m sorry Rebecca but this is the best thing to do. Bye.”

Rebecca’s so worried. What will she do now? If Lauren won’t make her medical reports anymore, Sam might consult other doctor and he’ll eventually know that his wife’s just lying. Rebecca’s afraid to lose her husband, he’s her everything and she won’t let anything break them. After a while, Sam entered Rebecca’s room crying.

“How can you do that to me Rebecca?”

“Do what?”

“I heard it all on the phone. I thought you were sleeping so I grabbed the phone. But when I was about to speak, I heard you and Lauren. I badly want to know your condition so I didn’t hang up the phone. But unintentionally, I heard what I wasn’t supposed to know. I’m so stupid. Why did I easily believe you?”

“Let me explain Sam. I just did that to have your attention because I’m missing you. And I’m missing you because I love you.” Rebecca’s tears fell.

“Love? How can you even say that word? If you love me, you won’t lie. You won’t do things that might possibly hurt my feelings!”

“I’m sorry Sam. Give me another chance.”

“I sacrificed myself for you. How can you even do that?” Sam became more emotional and more tears fell from his eyes.

“What? I can’t understand you Sam.”

“I have Leukemia Rebecca! But I chose not to be diagnosed because I’m afraid that you might get worse if I let you know. The day you started lying was also the day that I was about to tell you about this but I chose not to. And now, what will I get? You never really fail to dishearten me.”

Sam continued, “The doctor just gave me three months. I’m dying Rebecca. I’m dying…”

Alice Reyes' “Cinderella” Set for Gala Night Opening on Nov. 28

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The smash hit of the holiday season with the best romance and laughter formula is coming real soon ! Yes, the undisputed masterpiece of classical elegance and magical production of CINDERELLA is back !!!

As a special pre-Christmas treat, Ballet Philippines shall stage anew Alice Reyes’ CINDERELLA on November 28, 2014 – 8 p.m. at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo, Cultural Center of the Philippines.

CINDERELLA is the best loved fairy tale of all time about a poor girl whose true worth is recognized not by her family but by a prince bearing her lost shoe.

“ I have always wanted to do a ballet for children – Cinderella was the perfect material. After all, I can’t think of childhood without Mother Goose and Cinderella. Working on a full-length ballet patterned after the traditional classic form presented many problems. The easiest way would have been to adhere to the Cinderella scenario already established by such noted choreographers as Petipa, Fokine, Sergeyev and Ashton, among others. What kept me on track in my version was the one thought that eventually became a guide: the ballet was for Chris and Sara and Marco and Carlo and little Alice and all my wonderful little friends who keep bringing “wonder” into my life. I would like to give them something back in return.”

“ Thus, the garden divertissement with animals dancing for Cinderella; two talented girls playing the stepsisters rather than men; a warm fun-loving King who wanted grandchildren; two princely brothers of Prince Charming to lighten the palace scenes; and lots and lots of dancing.”

Buffalo Wild Wings Opens in the Philippines this December

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Things are about to heat up for food lovers and local sports fans with the Philippine opening of Buffalo Wild Wings, known for its exciting sports viewing atmosphere. Its namesake being Buffalo, NY-style chicken wings served with one of 18 mouth-watering signature sauces and seasonings, spiced up with its wide selection of beers. The first Philippine branch of this international restaurant chain will be launched at Capitol Commons in Pasig City this December.

It was in 1982 when Jim Disbrow and Scott Lowery founded Buffalo Wild Wings, shortly after the two friends moved to Ohio from Buffalo. Driven by their craving for New York’s popular bar food which was nowhere to be found in Ohio, Jim and Scott opened their own wing joint instead near The Ohio State University campus.

Three decades later, the modest wing joint has grown into an influential brand with over 1,040 locations in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and soon the Philippines.

“We are very excited to be bringing the Buffalo Wild Wings experience to Manila and we look forward to becoming a part of this dynamic community,” said Tim Murphy, Vice President of International for Buffalo Wild Wings.

Bridging Social and Health Inequities: The GIDA Experience

Wazzup Pilipinas!
Persistent health inequities in the country would mean health services are still beyond the reach of amny Filipinos, especially the poor. Eliminating a complex problem like these require a systematic approach that the Zuellig Family Foundation (ZFF) believes must start with the health leader which should be the municipal mayor alongside his municipal health officers and community workers.

The far-off rural communities would have the least opportunities to take advantage of government health products, services and facilities. This is because of several reasons such as weak health systems, poor health-seeking behavior, absence of adequate road infrastructure and lack of transportation facilities.

Eight municipal mayors from geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDA) shared their health challenges experienced by GIDA residents, as well as the reforms to address those health gaps with the help of their communities and the ZFF in a colloquium entitled "Bridging Social and Health Inequities: The GIDA Experience."

Ryu Ramen & Curry: Feasting on Fabulously Flavorful Tantanmen Dishes

Wazzup Pilipinas!

It was time for another Open Rice Philippines foodie meet-up at another notable restaurant in the Metro. My taste buds was highly anticipating another tasty treat this time at a Japanese ramen house known as Ryu Ramen & Curry located at the SM Jazz Residences in Makati. You'll find the restaurant facing the Nicanor Garcia street side just opposite the Crown Center building where One Asia Center, our virtual and office-sharing home, is holding office.

Ryu Ramen & Curry currently have other branches located in Tomas Morato in Quezon City and Up Town Center in Katipunan Avenue, also in Quezon City. I'm sure they will eventually expand into more branches soon just like every other restaurant in the country. The proliferation of restaurant chains in the country is a testament that Filipinos really love eating, may it be local or international-inspired culinary dishes.

Ryu Ramen & Curry takes pride in offering authentic Japanese specialty dishes that satisfactory pleases the Filipino taste. Their spicy dishes can be served in mild version so that even children can appreciate the flavorful culinary treats that lingers even after hours of eating from the restaurant.

Our Open Rice Philippines foodie meet-up at Ryu Ramen & Curry takes us to experience their fabulously flavorful Tantanmen dishes. They have five variations of the Tantanmen but unfortunately only four were served due to the unavailability of the tender Angus beef that is the main ingredient in one of the Tantanmen varieties.

BNI Philippines Holds Grand Inauguration Night to Welcome New Officers and Members

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Business Network International (BNI) Philippines recently launched its networking and referral marketing organizations at a grand inauguration night led by BNI Philippines co-National Directors Dexter Ortega and Edward Ling, last October 28, 2014 at the luxurious Manila Polo Club located in Makati city.

I also saw a very familiar face in the event, namely Vivian Velez, who apparently must be a business or career woman already since I haven't seen her around showbiz lately. The former actress widely known before as Ms. Body Beautiful of Philippine movies during her younger years led the raffle draw sometime before the event program ended and proceeded to a dance and networking.

The organizations are namely their BNI Genesis Chapter, Makati and BNI Pioneer Chapter, Ortigas - composed of small and medium enterprises and professionals seeking growth without necessarily increasing costs. The induction of officers and members of the two chapters was the evening's highlight.

The event was attended by several business owners mostly from SMEs joined by government officials, representatives of embassies and chambers of commerce, and foreign delegates from BNI all over the world. Since SMEs account for 99.6 percent of total registered enterprises, BNI is primarily targeting SMEs to become members since many of them have limited resources in growing their businesses thus a networking group would be totally helpful to expand their opportunities towards growth and development.
