Wazzup Pilipinas Original Short Stories Series: Rookie

Wazzup Pilipinas!

It is a great sunny day at Francville. I can hear these basketball fans cheering their teams. I feel excited but nervous at the same time. Who wouldn't? It's my first time here in the finals. I can't wait to play for Francville! But who am I in the first place? I am Jae Jordan, a student of Francville University commonly called F.U. But, it doesn't matter.

So, back to business. I can hear the crowd cheering for our team. Why not? It's our home town. 2 minutes left and the game will finally start! Coach Joseph calls for a huddle; we must not lose this game!

There we go! The time is up! The sport's commentator is calling the names of each player! Yeah, as usual, I'm not part of the first five, or the so-called starters. So yeah, I'm here, sitting on the bench, watching and cheering for my team. But that's fine.

"Jump ball!" Shouted the commentator. Both centers jumped high! Unfortunately, our opponent, the Blue Fields team got the possession of the ball. They immediately looked for their star player, first shot, and it’s good! The three point shot sinks in for the Blue Fields team. "Three!!!" shouted the commentator. The ball was inbounded by our captain. On the way to our side of the court, the ball was stolen! They passed it again to their star player, again, he took the shot and again, it's in! Great start for the Blue fields’ team!

Asian Premiere of British Choreographer’s Murakami – Inspired Works At The Peta Theater Center

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Bestsellers like Haruki Murakami’s “Norwegian Wood” have long inspired film, TV and theater adaptations worldwide – but dance? Touted as a “rising star” by Britains’ national daily, the Independent, British choreographer James Cousins dared to.

British Council, PETA Theater Center and the Cultural Center of the Philippines are delighted to present the Asian premiere of British choreographer James Cousins’ contemporary dance works: the highly-acclaimed There We Have Been and its sequel Without Stars. Shows are on Thursday, October 9 (8pm) and Friday, October 10 (3pm and 8pm) at the PETA Theater Center. The twin-bill production will next tour Malaysia and Vietnam this year.

There We Have Been focuses on the first half of Murakami’s novel, wherein two dancers enact the development of relationships between the novel’s protagonist and his late best friend's girlfriend. This duet sees English performers Aaron Vickers and Lisa Welham intensely folding, wrapping and balancing, with the female character never once touching the floor.

Without Stars tells the other half of the story. Framed from the male protagonists’ point of view, the piece for three dancers tells the story of a man on the brink of losing the life of his love. The dance piece features international contemporary dancers Albert Garcia (Spain), Chihiro Kawasaki (Japan) and Georges Hann (UK).

Faking It In "Let's Be Cops" Trailer and Poster Release

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Let’s Be Cops” is the ultimate buddy cop movie except for one thing: they're not cops. When two struggling pals dress as police officers for a costume party, they become neighborhood sensations. But when these newly minted “heroes” get tangled in a real life web of mobsters and dirty detectives, they must put their fake badges on the line.

Faking it real time, these fake cops have just found some real trouble. Starring Damon Wayans Jr. and Jake Johnson, The idea for the movie was born when director/co-writer Luke Greenfield decided to spend Halloween in a police officer’s uniform – a choice that had unexpected consequences.

“My costume designer at the time got me a real LAPD uniform and my buddy and I walked around Los Angeles,” Greenfield remembers. “The sense of power and authority was incredible. I was single at the time, and it became quite easy to talk to women on the street.”

With co-writer and executive producer Nicholas Thomas, Greenfield developed the pitch that was to become LET’S BE COPS. “We came up with the idea quite quickly,” says Thomas. “We pitched the project to 20th Century Fox, and it sold.”

The Old Spaghetti House: A Special Family Day Deserves A Special Family Restaurant

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The family decided to dine out a few days before my daughter's birthday. It was her 16th birthday (gosh ! I'm old already) and taking them to the traditional "langhap-sarap" or "happy meal" restaurant was quite inappropriate already.

Well, for me, it feels like they've all grown up so fast that their favorite restaurant because of the adorable mascots are too childish already at their age. My youngest is going to high school already next year and he has also changed a lot in both physical and behavioral traits. Gone are the fascination for children's games. Though they still love the cartoons on cable TV, they don't mingle with the younger kids anymore and prefer to browse online viewing anime e-comics and videos.

Thus, we spent our weekend dining on a few more elegant restaurants that Sunday immediately after church. Of course, they still prefer the pizza, spaghetti and fried chicken dishes but it must be different from the usual. After all, a special day deserves a special restaurant.

For long life, it's either "pancit" or "spaghetti so The Old Spaghetti House or TOSH came into mind.

CMANC Showcases Improved Buses and Jeepneys at 5th PIMS

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Columbian Manufacturing Corporation (CMANC) has the Filipino passenger in mind. Tinkering on that Pinoy piece of tincan, teh company sets its goal ... to improve the look and performance of a well-know historical icon, the all-time king of the road - the Jeepney!

They now have made it available also in air-conditioned varieties for the convenience of the passengers.

Also, being the exclusive distributor of Daewoo buses, they have also showcased the Newly Designed Commuter Vehicles proudly made in the Philippines, and at the 5th Philippine International Motor Show, they displayed the buses in retro design bringing us back to the Love Bus era.

To give Filipinos a better alternative, CMANC takes the lead in improving the Filipino commuters travel experience. Mandarin Palace: Celebrating Our Wedding Anniversary with Authentic Chinese Cuisine

Wazzup Pilipinas!

A celebration was necessary since it was a very special day for us as husband and wife. It's the very same day we got married in church. I mentioned church since we also were earlier married via civil wedding. You know, our beloved Mayor acted as the appointed one  who had the right to wed a couple outside of the formality of a wedding.

Our anniversary started with a visit to the church where we tied the knot. The Mary Help of Christians Parish located in Better Living Subdivision of Paranaque was still there proudly standing with just a few noticeable changes. The church now has some elaborate statues at the top of the altar and the stations of the cross. As far as everything else I don't recognize any changes. I wouldn't be able to remember since we were only at the church twice. First time was to file our wedding and submit requirements and teh second time was the day of the wedding itself. Naturally, I was not paying attention to any of the decorative interiors or even exteriors, I was more focused staring at my wife whom I was  so madly in love with.

The reason we chose that church was it was very near to the very first home we had at Lower Bicutan of Taguig city. Though the church was located inside a subdivision, it was just a short drive away from our previous rented apartment. Another reason was the exterior was absolutely majestic as compared to the nearest small church we have in Bicutan.

Tim Ho Wan: The Dim Sum Specialist Remains a Crowd Favorite Even in the Philippines

Wazzup Pilipinas!

At last I found the time to write about my dining experience at Tim Ho Wan, that popular 1 Michelin Star dim sum restaurant which originated in Hong Kong. I guess I never prioritized it since they were obviously doing well. The long queue at the Megamall branch says it all. I probably have that thought within me that says I should write about the other restaurants that do not have as many customers all wanting to try out what all the fuzz was all about.

I was also pretty curious about the those three big buns that melts in your mouth which are called Baked Bun with BBQ Pork (closely resembles something like a "buchi" or  maybe "siopao" but a lot better. Some have been calling it heavenly buns. I would rather not exaggerate as all the hype may be over the top. They're more than the usual and it was my first time to try something like it.

I think what was more important was I enjoyed my dinner that night while I met with a business partner. There's something really great about our discussion, not only because we were talking about the beginning of our partnership that night, but we were also having a great satisfying meal.

Zoe Saldana’s Extraordinary Fairy Tale in “The Book Of Life”

Wazzup Pilipinas!

From visionary filmmaker Jorge Gutierrez whose unique visual style and vibrant storytelling technique, “The Book of Life” tells the story of three best friends - Manolo and his equally courageous best friend Joaquin are not your typical Prince Charmings; the object of their affections is far from being your average princess, hence “The Book of Life” is a fairy tale that doesn’t go by the book.

Our story begins in a museum, where we meet a mysterious tour guide named Mary Beth, who is taken on the seemingly thankless task of guiding a group of rowdy kids who would rather be anywhere else, on a tour. But Mary Beth has something special in store for them, and escorts them into a secret room, where the magic of “The Book of Life” begins to unfold. “This particular area of the museum looks like Latin America basically exploded into it, turning it into a place filled with life and color,” says Gutierrez.

Christina Applegate voices Mary Beth and introduces us to the principal characters and their hometown of San Angel. We meet Manolo (voiced by Diego Luna), who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart. Before choosing which path to follow, Manolo embarks upon an incredible adventure that spans three fantastical worlds, where he must face his greatest fears. The object of Manolo’s affections, Maria, voiced by ZoĂ« Saldana, is an independent, strong-willed and fun-loving young woman who is wooed by her best friends Manolo and Joaquin (Channing Tatum), from their time as children to a reunion years later as adults.

Search for “Gone Girl” Starts October 8

Wazzup Pilipinas!

From the tour de force thriller that became a bestselling must-read comes David Fincher’s screen version of Gone Girl, a wild ride through our modern media culture and down into the deep, dark fault lines of an American marriage – in all its unreliable promises, inescapable deceits and pitch-black comedy.

The couple at the center of the story – former New York writer Nick Dunne and his formerly “cool girl” wife Amy, now trying to make ends meet in the mid-recession Midwest – have all the sinuous outer contours of contemporary marital bliss. But on the occasion of their 5th wedding anniversary, Amy goes missing -- and those contours crack into a maze of fissures. Nick becomes the prime suspect, shrouded in a fog of suspicious behavior. Amy becomes the vaunted object of a media frenzy as the search for her, dead or alive, plays out before the eyes of a world thirsting for revelations.

Taking the alternately guarded and exposed role of Nick is Ben Affleck. Says Fincher of casting him: “Putting a cast together is like putting a basketball team together and Nick was the point guard. He has to feed the narrative. It’s a ‘he said, she said’ in the book; but it’s ‘he experiences, she experiences’ in the movie. It’s more subjective. You’re not gifted with all these inner monologues in the movie. So you need an actor who is very deft to play this role. It’s 3-D chess, not Chinese checkers.”

Max's Restaurant Relaunches Delivery Service: A Celebration of Delight

Wazzup Pilipinas!

"When there's rain, there's Max's Delivery!" says one of the executive of Max's Restaurant during the launch of the new and improved Max's Delivery service offering more delightful experiences for many satisfied customers.

True enough, it is a bit inconvenient to go out in the rain just to dine out at our favorite Max's Restaurant and we are glad than even during the rainy season, Max's continues to serve its customers via delivery service. We'll get to enjoy our favorite Filipino dishes even during the wet season.

Steering away temporarily from the Gilas Pilipinas promotions, Max's held the launch last September 18, 2014 at Whitespace located in Pasong Tamo, Makati. It was also a bit rainy that night but I managed to get there, and thanks to a friend and his ride, going home was a lot easier.

After dining on surprisingly a no chicken dinner, and everything was not from the Max's menu - a total change since we believe Max's employees needed some break from the taste and smell of their own dishes, followed a program to re-introduce the Max's Delivery service.

Recognitions were given to outstanding performers specifically the 1 Million delivery served by one of their branches, talks from their head honchos and a number from the actual delivery crew sporting their new outfits, accessories and motorcycles.

More about it below from excerpts of their official press release.

The Far Eastern University Theater Guild (FTG) in collaboration with the President’s Committee on Culture continues its 80th season with the staging of “Makikitawag Lang Ako”.

I Only Came to Use the Phone” is about a woman whose car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. She hitches a ride on a bus on its way to a mental institute. Cosmo Tower 69 Bachelor Bash 2014: Men Literally Falling Off the Stage

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Most of the ladies can't breath last night because it was literally raining HOT guys at the Cosmo Bash 2014 event held at the World Trade Center. The annual bachelor bash was organized by Cosmopolitan magazine dubbed as Cosmo Tower 69 Bachelor Bash 2014, and as expected, it made a lot of ladies drooling after the guys who paraded half-naked on stage. But unlike the Bench: The Naked Truth event, there were no Coco Martin with a lady on a leash, no Jake Cuenca butt, or men displaying their bulges with mere underwear covering....only shorts with something evident protruding, and their close enough to six-packs galore.

There was however a scene-stealing James Reid who fell of the stage while performing. I thought ladies fell for the uber hotness of the muscular hunks, but one of the hunks literally fell off the stage landing in front of the ladies. Intentional, or simply careless?

Ladies instantly got high fever upon seeing the six-pack "pandesals" of the guys. Even the sight of hot Security Officers sexin' up the stage was so oozing with sex appeal. Want to be arrested? The surprise appearance of Daniel Matsunaga, Pinoy Big Brother latest season grand winner also lighted up the stage with more sparkling eyes from the ladies who were all swooning over the guys.

More photos from netizens below each one credited based from their filenames. Enjoy!

The Brae of Infinity Resort: Sumptuous Early Morning Breakfast at Puerto Galera

Wazzup Pilipinas!

I would always wake up early in the morning whenever I am away at a far away place. Why? I aim to catch the sunrise. I would always like to capture it with my camera regardless of how it looked like. Sometimes there won't be any opportunity since the sunrise would be at the other side of our location not visible since it would be hidden behind the mountains so I would do the second best thing: capture the sunset instead.

Luckily, our stay at the luxurious Infinity Resort in Puerto Galera allowed us to have a view of the sunrise. It was not as dramatic and spectacular as other sunrises I've seen since it was also covered by mostly mountains, but it was still a warm feeling to witness the sun slowly shining out to bring light to the world.

Of course, after such a sensational experience feeling the warm touch of sunshine on your face, my wife and I decided to have an early breakfast even before having our early morning shower. They say it's the most important meal of the day so we should not skip this before going through our tour of the resort, and the surrounding areas.

Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) launched FutureYou.ph, an online career exploration portal that aims to address the lack of information on the right job opportunities for Filipino students and graduates.

The Philippines currently has the highest unemployment rate in Southeast Asia.

The country has an average of 2.8 million people who have been unemployed for the past 2 years. Majority of those are in the 15-24 age group followed by those aged 24-30, composing 48% and 30% of the unemployed in the country, respectively.

Of the total unemployed, 44% have either graduated or reached high school, and 34% have reached or graduated from college.

PBEd projects that jobs mismatch is one of the causes of high unemployment in the Philippines. Many students do not know what jobs are in demand--there are industries that have too many applicants but do not have sufficient career offers, while there are others that do offer careers, but do not have enough applicants.

There is an oversupply of talent—there are industries that offer jobs but have no applicants, and vice versa. This is partly caused by students not having enough information on where the job opportunities lie.

NCAA Brawl Between Mapua and EAC: Ball So Hard, Not Brawl So Hard

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The Mapua-EAC scuffle. Wild!

With only 28.5 seconds left in the game, a bench-clearing brawl broke out in this afternoon's Mapua Cardinals vs. EAC Generals game.

Yesterday's horrible and ugly end brawl game between Mapua and EAC has NO place inside the basketball court! But I do hope that kind of violence in the NCAA stays there and does not escalate outside the court. It's really a sad thing to see.

The refs lost control. The refs are a bunch of dickheads. That's what happens when the referees fail to do their freakin' job. It was a clear offensive foul! For not calling that flying elbow. For reacting slow to the situation. One ugly game!

Basketball. Boxing. Pro-Wrestling. 100 m dash. Name it, that NCAA brawl probably had it.

Kaspersky Lab: Right on Target with New and Updated Security Products

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Kaspersky Lab has new and updated security products for the Philippine consumers namely the Kaspersky Internet Security for hardcore Internet users, the Kaspersky Anti-Virus for occasional Internet users, and the Kaspersky Internet Security – Multi-Device 2015, which will be currently available only in the Philippines in the entire Southeast Asian region.

"The popularity and affordability of mobile devices as well as the accessibility of Internet has made Filipinos more gadget-loving and Internet-savvy than their regional counterparts that it’s no wonder almost everyone’s going online from their devices here. Unfortunately, this scenario makes Filipinos become increasingly and easily vulnerable to cyber-threats, particularly those using social engineering tactics, through multiple access points," warned Jesmond Chang, Corporate Communications Manager of Kaspersky Lab South East Asia.

At an event dubbed as Kaspersky Lab 2015 Consumer Suite Philipine Media Launch held last September 11, 2014 at the Gandiva Cafe and Archery Range located at teh 7th Floor of One Corporate Center building in Ortigas Center, Kasperky launched the said products, and treated the members of the media to an archery experience as well as a competition to later on reward the winner of the challenge.

I Am An Artist and I Don't Work For Free

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Artist: "Here's your design."
Patron: "Why do I have to pay so much if it only took you 10 minutes to draw this?"
Artist: "Because it took 20 years of practice, for me to do this in 10 minutes."

Because doing something for free or getting tokens in exchange of our work, or some would call passion, doesn't keep a roof over our family's head, food on the table, or keep the power on.

Think about it for a second. Everything that you see, interact with, buy, wear, etc was designed by a visually creative person. From the shoe and the
swoosh on the Nikes you bought to the type logo that adorns your dentists letterhead. People seem to forget that the visual element is such an integral part of a product or service's identity. Your willing to pay for the product, why shouldn't the person that made you want to buy that product get paid for their time, talent, and effort.

There is a common misconception that art is just "fun". "Oh you just draw and paint. Isn't this something you do in your spare time for fun?" NO. This is hours of agonizing over every tiny detail to make sure it's right, that it does it's job, and meets the demands of the client. Not to mention a lifetime of practice, education, and experience.

But if someone doesn't want to pay for it, fine. Do it your damn self.

"The Wizard of Oz ", Set to Open on September 26

Wazzup Pilipinas!

As a season offering to all children, Kids Acts Philippines proudly presents “ The Wizard of Oz ” with script and lyrics by LUIGI NACARIO and music by EUGENE BELBIS.

The story is adapted from the popular version of “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum.

The Wizard of Oz is story of a young girl named Dorothy Gale from Kansas who always imagined of beautiful things somewhere over the rainbow. One day, a cyclone came that hit her house and spinned up inside the cyclone, floated down through clouds and crashed to the beautiful and colorful land of the munchkins, the Munchkinland.

Her adventure started by following the road paved with yellow bricks to meet the Wonderful Wizard of Oz and asked her way to Kansas. Along the way she met Scarecrow, Tin Woodman and Cowardly Lion who became her friends and went with her to also seek help from the Wizard. Their journey became so thrilling and enchanting because of the magical powers of the four witches of Oz, the Wicked Witches of East and West and the Good Witches of North - Belinda and South - Glinda. All Witches had magical things that made Dorothy’s adventure delightful, from the Silver Shoes of the Witch of the East to the broomstick of the Witch of West and from the magical kiss of Belinda to the Glinda’s revelation of the charm of the shoes. The story is about determination, love, courage, honesty and an important place like no other in the world – home.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Drastic Reincarnation by Michael Bay

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Cowabunga, dudes!!! I have a piece of Krispy Kreme donut shaped like one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' head on one hand and a can of cola in the other! I'm all turtle-powered and ready to enter the Promenade cinema at Greenhills for the special blocked screening of the latest movie.

OMG!!! My TMNT are no longer what they used to be! No more charming looks because they seem to have all turned into extremely gross hunky muscular monsters in steroids. They may look "behemothly" large and physically imposing but later you'll find out they would sometimes act and talk like sissies. However, I have to keep in mind that "there have been many versions of TMNT before and there will be many after. This is just the 2014 model."

But wait! There's Megan Fox to begin with. Might as well hang on until the end of the movie. Transform and roll in to the cinema!

"The basics of the story essentially remain the same as in many incarnations. New York is under siege by criminals called the Foot Clan, under the command of a leader called the Shredder. Young, intrepid reporter April O’Neil (Megan Fox) stumbles upon the Foot being thwarted by mysterious vigilantes and soon discovers these vigilantes are teenagers… and mutants… and ninjas …and turtles!"

Wazzup Pilipinas Original Short Stories Series: TGIF

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The story is all about desperation. Lyca, the main characater, was so desperate for love which made her so ignorant about reality.

The author of this story focused on emotions. Specifically, love. Lyca became so blinded of the signs due to her love for John. Considering that she is naĂŻve, she then believed to those tarot cards which was inferred by the “signs”.

In the latter part of the story, the she then became so weak to the point that she let go. It can be inferred that she did that for love. She might have expected too much due to her desperation and lack of touch. With the quote in the beginning of the story, she might have thought that love could heal her brokenness.

You'll learn to never base your happiness on other people,  and that before you demand love, love yourself first. Not everyone you love will love you back.

Self-harm isn’t the key to problems. Try to open your problems to your friends and seek for help and guidance for God.

Here is our short story for the day. Please read on and enjoy.

The Maze Runner: Above and Beyond Our Expectations

Wazzup Pilipinas!

With a $32.5M debut, and more than $81M worldwide, the Maze Runner franchise is off to a strong start!

If you read the James Dashner book, the differences were obvious but it was a great and intense movie nonetheless. Just because a movie doesn't follow a book completely doesn't make it a bad movie. Nowhere close to flawless, the movie is still plenty entertaining thanks to a good script that realizes it's dark concept. It's actually the best movie I've seen all year!

The Maze Runner was such a GREAT movie (mostly because I got to watch Dylan O'Brien for 2 hours straight). It didn't disappoint me! Such a good film. A must see. Had me on the edge of my seat. Made me laugh and I can't wait for the second one. A sequel is obviously coming up soon. Yes! The Scorch Trials is coming up September 18, 2015.

It is like Narnia, Game of Thrones and Teenwolf smashed into one. Personally, The Maze Runner is better than Hunger Games and Divergent. It was incredible. Really enjoyed it. Highly recommended.
