Maharlika Summit 2014: The Re-visioning of Maharlika

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Change is progressive. We cannot deny the fact that today, our nation needs total change and transformation. There is crisis in every aspect of life. Most of our countrymen have been deprived of their basic necessities such as food, clothing, shelter, and medicine. How much more on the human rights, employment, social standing, economics, education, etc. to name a few. To one long forgotten aspect is the enrichment of our culture heritage and the right access to the origin of our country's name.

If we get back to our roots, there is a connecting link from the past that must be patched up to resolve the mystery that has remained—a question of our own identity.

Maharlika Summit 2014 is a Conference-Festival Summit on ‘Maharlika’ to gather together
diverse “Maharlika”-based groups in the country and abroad. It is the Re-visioning of ‘Maharlika’ as Cultural  Metaphor, Folk History & Social Movement for National Identity, Transformation, and Development.

This whole day event will be on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at the GT-Toyota Building, Asian Center, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Q.C.

Free Grammar and Writing Course for Bloggers

Wazzup Pilipinas!
"But grammar is relevant for all companies. Yes, language is constantly changing, but that doesn’t make grammar unimportant. Good grammar is credibility, especially on the internet. In blog posts, on Facebook statuses, in e-mails, and on company websites, your words are all you have. They are a projection of you in your physical absence. And, for better or worse, people judge you if you can’t tell the difference between their, there, and they’re." -Kyle Weins

Cybercrime Law Republic Act 10175: "Balik Buwis" Because This Government is Broken!

Wazzup Pilipinas!

A few days ago, the Philippine Supreme Court passed the Orwellian named law, "Cybercrime Law," that imposes a jail sentence of 6 to 12 years for libel. President Benigno Simeon Cojuangco Aquino III or PNoy was quoted as saying that the Cybercrime Law will not abridge our rights to free speech if we have no intention of breaking the law. But see, Mr. President, the logic works both ways. Why fear social criticism, why criminalize libel if none of you are guilty of breaking our trust?

"Hindi naman daw layunin ng #CybercrimeLaw ang malimitahan ang freedom of speech. Kung wala naman daw kasalanan at totoo ang sinasabi, wag daw matakot. Could a lawyer please tell PNoy that truth is not a defense in libel? Huwag niya tayong gawing tanga!"

President Aquino: "If you are saying the truth, why would you fear libel?”

Because, Mr. President, under the existing Libel Law, truth IS NOT A DEFENSE, especially not under the provisions where the offended party may sue for "real or imagined" injury to their honor.

We can't even argue that the offended party had no honor to begin with so there was nothing injured in the first place.

We, your bosses, are not pleased at all--with you or the government. We, the people, deserve much, much better than this and the shoddily-made RA 10175.

Smile! It’s a Month of Love and Dental Health

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Focus on overall oral hygiene is of utmost importance this February because aside from being the love month, we are also celebrating the National Dental Health Month.

”Dental hygiene plays an important role in love and romance as well as in day-to-day living,” stresses Me-Ann Achacoso, Philips Consumer Lifestyle Business Development Manager for Health and Wellness.

Always, a smile is the first thing people notice when we are introduced, and this creates a lasting impression. And a great smile owes largely to white teeth. We are often beguiled by white teeth in a smile, and rightly so. This is a sign of good health and nutrition and proper dental hygiene. Evolutionary science explains to us that this a good sign in finding a mate. But a smile and white teeth also play subtle but important part in everyday life.

Extended MRT-3 Operating Hours to Be Tested by DOTC

Wazzup Pilipinas!

To give the public another option to beat traffic, the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) and the Metro Rail Transit III (MRT-3) Office will extend the operating hours of the metropolis’ most utilized urban rail transit system starting on 24 February 2014. The longer hours of service will be tested for one month to determine whether it will be viable in the long run.

“This is part of our program to mitigate the traffic situation. Based on the test run, we will monitor how much passengers are willing to alter their riding habits by commuting earlier in the morning or later in the evening. We will also see whether this will encourage motorists to take the train instead of their cars,” said DOTC Spokesperson Michael Arthur Sagcal.

Currently, the rail system’s regular hours of operation are from 5:30am to 10:30pm. For the first 2 work weeks, or from February 24 until March 7, the MRT-3 Office will start operations at 4:30am from the North Avenue station and 5:00am from the Taft Avenue station.

WhatsApp Now A Part of Facebook says Mark Zuckerberg

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Fresh from Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg FB status is the announcement of taking over mobile app WhatsApp. It's an impressive and expensive acquisition. We thought the guys at Apple would've beat the Facebook team to it but instead of focusing on M&A's, I think Apple is buying back stocks.
You only mentioned WhatsApp 15 times. Maybe now everyone will go find out who the hell they are. It's just a 30 person team, the development is done in Russia for cheap, 8 million raised and BOOM.... 16 billion acquisition! We're looking forward to what this relationship produces.
Everywhere I've traveled outside of the US, people are using WhatsApp extensively. Very cool to see this partnership, congratulations, great minds and teams uniting! It is like Facebook is trying to take over the world and control everyone's lives. They should buy Instagram now and conquer the world.

Congratulations, Zuck!

Avril Lavigne Surprises Audience with Chad Kroeger Duet Live at Smart Araneta Coliseum

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Canadian pop-punk sensation Avril Lavigne rocked the Smart Araneta Coliseum last February 17 with her all-time favorite hit songs plus the massive turn-out of fans that were jumping up an down most of the time during her fabulous concert at the big dome. There are many new and younger artists so I never imagined she will still be able to draw a huge crowd.

My wife and I were very lucky to have attended her concert and getting a great seat at the same time. Though the waiting time was almost an hour, we spent it taking "selfies" using our smartphones, eating snacks like pizza, buttered corn bits, potato wedges, and drinking mango fruit shakes.  There were a lot of vendors roaming around so we were tempted to buy a lot from them so we won't get bored waiting and doing nothing. Next time we'll probably eat first before coming to another concert because the prices were like double from what is sold outside. We also spent some time observing the crowd as most of them are around their 20s and younger.

The concert started off with Avril wearing a Hello Kitty-inspired black and pink outfit for her “Hello Kitty”opening song. It was followed by her  2007 single “Girlfriend”  Half-way, Avril shouted “Manila!” then followed it with “Everybody put your hands up! Are you guys ready to have fun tonight?”

9th Philippine Bird Festival in Zamboanga City: Birds Fly Without Fear, Without Worries

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Bird watching as an activity for tourists has become prominent all over the world. In the Philippines, major milestones contributing to its growth are the coming together of Filipino bird enthusiasts forming the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines and the release of Volumes I and II of the book ‘Birdwatching in the Philippines’ which made a significant contribution in the promotion of bird watching in the country.

Birdwatchers are a group of people who have a peculiar passion of observing birds in their natural habitat. They find satisfaction in watching birds in the wild while making a compendium of birds personally encountered in their natural environment. They operate on the value of honesty in compiling their respective list of birds seen in their lifetime. They have the tendency to be challenged, racing among themselves to the top by having the most number of birds encountered. Since their activities involve travelling to far flung and remote areas, birdwatchers mostly belong to an affluent group who finds pleasure, not only in their hobby, but also in the culinary offerings of the places they visit.

Seeing that local and international birdwatchers are a potential niche market for ecotourism destinations such as Zamboanga city, the Department of Tourism -Regional Office 9, after participating in the 8th Philippine Bird Festival held in Manila last December 2012, pitched for the hosting of the 9th Philippine Bird Festival with the main objective of promoting tourism in Zamboanga city.

The Philippine Bird Festival annual event, organized yearly by the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines, has been hosted in different places in the Philippines – previously in Dumaguete, Cebu, Puerto Princesa, etc. Now on its 9th year, it will be co-organized by the Department of Tourism - Regional Office 9 and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Bitcoin: Should You or Shouldn't You Use It?

Wazzup Pilipinas!

With the growing popularity of Bitcoin in the Philippines, experts from leading secure content and threat management solutions developer Kaspersky Lab urged Filipinos to learn its benefits and risks before using the online currency.

Bitcoin is a digital crypto-currency or a virtual currency in the form of a cryptographic string of characters instead of a printed bill or a minted coin.

Bitcoin transactions are fast, taking around only 10 minutes to verify a transaction. It’s also cheap as it liberates users from the need to maintain or pay for processing fees to a credit card company.

It can be transferred to another person from halfway around the world in minutes and can be converted to traditional currencies on various exchanges at any given time.

DOTC Taps PNR as First Step to Combat Metro Traffic

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) and the Philippine National Railways (PNR) are set to launch a Special Coach service to provide travellers with a convenient alternative to the anticipated traffic escalation in the areas affected by construction works for the Metro Manila Skyway Stage 3 and the NAIA Expressway Projects.

Scheduled to be launched on March 3, 2014, the Special Coach service will make use of air-conditioned train sets with features to ensure passenger convenience such as fixed seating, on-board comfort rooms, reclining seats, and a lounge section. It can accommodate 120 people per trip.

“This is one of the DOTC’s first efforts towards easing the present traffic situation in Manila, Makati, Pasay, and other affected areas especially in the southern part of the metropolis. Instead of taking private vehicles, motorists will now have a more efficient alternative. We are also working on other solutions which we will be ready to implement as our infrastructure projects are rolled out later this year to 2015,” said DOTC Spokesperson Michael Arthur Sagcal.

Urbanears Spring/Summer 2014 Collection: Three New Intoxicating Colors for the Season

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Urbanears releases two color collections each year – one for the Spring/Summer season and one for the Fall/Winter season. Each collection features three new colors that once have been sold out, may not return.

They carry over two colors from previous seasons each time in addition to five standard shades that are always in our collection. The result is a grand total of 10 fresh and handpicked colors each season. In addition to this, they release a handful of Urbanears Editions, which are special models with a little something extra.

This season’s collection is inspired by three thirst-quenching colors that look just as good on a pair of headphones as they do garnish in an ice-cold cocktail. We hereby bring you Forget-Me-Not, Julep, and Citrus.

DOTC: Brand New MRT Coaches May Help Ease Traffic by 2015

Wazzup Pilipinas!

With Metro Manila traffic expected to worsen further over the next few years due to the implementation of multiple infrastructure projects, the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) is hoping that it will finally be allowed to add forty-eight (48) brand new Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) to the Metro Rail Transit III (MRT-3) system at the soonest possible time.

“We hope that the order preventing us from adding brand new LRVs will be lifted immediately, for the public’s sake. The DOTC will be able to increase MRT-3’s capacity within 2 to 3 years starting from the time that the court allows us to proceed. Since more passengers will be able to take the train, EDSA traffic should be mitigated considerably,” said DOTC Spokesperson Michael Arthur Sagcal.

The transport agency’s MRT-3 Capacity Expansion Project involves the purchase of 48 brand new LRVs through an open and transparent bidding process conducted last year. After the contract was awarded to China’s Dalian Locomotive and Rolling Stock Company in January, however, the Regional Trial Court (RTC) of Makati issued a Temporary Order of Protection (TOP) to halt the process.

When Sidewalks Fail, Give Us Back Our Roads!

Wazzup Pilipinas!
"A group of Filipinos, including children and students, on Monday asked the Supreme Court to compel the government to implement a road-sharing scheme, saying that practically all the roads in the country are given to just less than 2 percent of the population that owns motor vehicles." - Inquirer.net
The walk lane, or what we call sidewalk, is important for the safety and convenience of the people who opt to walk on the streets. The reason why less and less people are walking is because there are really no suitable sidewalk available on the lengthy roads of the Metro. Either there is no sidewalk at all, or there will always be something blocking or preventing us to go from point to the next - vendors, PUV terminals, "tambays", parked vehicles, dogs (and even chickens) tied to posts, etc.

This is the same problem as the absence of pathways for the disabled on wheelchair. Iimagine how harder it is for them. If we are already experiencing hell, then they must be twice as depressed and in agony.

The very small percentage of the population are the kings of the road. There is not much room for even bikers (not the arrogant motor-bikers who annoyingly sway from left-to-right and wouldn't stick in just one lane, but the ones who prefer to ride bicycles) and live a healthier life.

Wikipedia reports that there are 535 cycle-share schemes in 49 countries, employing more than half a million bikes worldwide. Cycling is no longer just for a minority of fanatics but for a healthy, efficient and sustainable mode of transport that might just be the catalyst for a 21st Century urban renaissance.
