Dalanghita Productions Presents "Kailan at Bakit"

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The theater never ceases to amaze me. There is nothing better than actually seeing the actors perform live and impromptu. It becomes more meaningful when you see the emotions, both gestures and facial expressions, matching fluently with the words spoken.

The best part is seeing some mistakes that are quickly resolved by quick thinking of the actors that are smart and witty. They are the most talented of the rest. No take twos, only unique presentations done in the spur of the moment powered by their memories of the script, learnings from experience, and their innate creativity.

DALANGHITA PRODUCTIONS proudly announces its first production "KAILAN AT BAKIT" - a trilogy of one-act plays set from Dec. 12 - 14, 2014 at the PETA Studio, 3/F Peta Theater Center.

I was thrilled to receive an invitation for a media preview last December 12. I get to again see and appreciate the power of the theater to naturally touch the emotions in a more intimate setting.

What can I say about the three plays? They were "freakish." It's the most perfect word to describe them. They were all freakishly good.

"KAILAN AT BAKIT" shall feature the following productions:

1. BETANG
Written by Joanna L. Katanyag
Directed by Ed Lacson
Starring Sherry Lara, Juliene Mendoza, Roi Calilong

It’s 3am in Lola Betang’s time… Amidst the buzz of the drunken Tondo, Lola Betang stays sober and still. With her old transistor beside her, she waits patiently for her behind-scheduled “Sundo”. Lola Betang patiently waits, hoping that when demise finally faces her, she will, at long last, come face to face again with the love of her life… If only time would allow her.

Every character was very appropriate in their role. Betang and her former love, who visited her from the heavens, were perfect for their role. Even during the parts when they rekindled the love they felt during their youth was a "kilig" factor. The story has a paranormal angle since it deals with the possibilities of an after-life, and the fascinating mystery of how we should cherish life while it has not been taken away yet.

2. MGA BULONG NI RARA
Written by Pertee BriƱas
Directed by Claudia Fernandez
Starring Oskie King, EJ Patacsil, TJ dela Paz, Ina Azarcon

The show displays the unique simplicity of everyday life through Nitoy and Gemma, both domestic helpers who are in the middle of a conflict involving their common love interest: the subdivision guard, Yuri. The conflict reaches its peak when both Nitoy and Gemma finally decide to step into a confrontation. But both are overwhelmed when an disturbing incident happens to Yuri in between their unfriendly exchange.

Another sudden change towards the paranormal when the story shifts into a seemingly possessed character. Here we saw how true love, even coming from the person we would least expect, has the power to save lives. All three actors were engaging in their respective roles. If it was not a stage act, I would have mistaken them for the characters they portray.

3. FRESHMAN
Written and Directed by Chris Martinez
Starring Gio Gahol, Brian Sy

Bonn and Ryan are two college freshmen about to take their final exams the next day. The scenes take place in Bonn’s room, where Bonn, having difficulties in class, sought the help of Ryan. In between review exercises, the two engage in small talk about their college lives. The play takes its turn when one of them begins to unleash his repressed frustrations on his real nature. The play is set in the early 90’s, and takes on social issues such as the significance of male machismo, religious repression, and moral dilemmas surrounding notions dictated by society in that era.

This is another act where they highlight another gay character. I thought it would have been disastrous seeing another gay role but the sensitivities strongly expressed in this act was too extreme that it overpowered that initial thought. This is the act that was the most freakish that I still couldn't get over it. Though there may not be any paranormal situation here since its a display of the inner rage within us that at some instant we could not contain anymore. There are really a lot of feelings that we keep to ourselves and just waiting for the right opportunity, gather enough courage or become crazy, to shout it out to the whole world. Society judges us so much that we hid our real identity.

Thank you for another stimulating entertainment. Bravo Dalanghita Productions!
