Sri Lanka is one of the most beautiful places on this planet. It is a mind-blowing melting pot of history and culture. The beautiful temples, the green tea plantations and the smiling people make this place one of the most enchanting destinations in the world.

But visiting the sights following a guide book can get really boring. You should make an effort to explore the hidden gems of Sri Lanka which looks mysterious but alluring. Nothing beats being there personally to enjoy the places with all senses appreciating their awesome beauty and rich cultural background.

Of course, the trip would be highly educational and awe-inspiring as well as we get to see wonderful artifacts and structures that were both made by man and nature. 1) Sigiriya 



Sigiriya or Lion stone is an ancient rock palace that is located in the central Matale district. It is often regarded as the 8th wonder of the world and UNESCO has labelled this place as a 5111World Heritage Site. It is a popular tourist destination and famous for its ancient paintings which would remind you of the Ajanta Caves in India. Sigiriya acts as a window through which you can take a peep into the archaeological wonders of the country.

2) Dambulla 



The Dambulla Royal Rock Temple is considered to be one of the ancient Buddhist temples of the island nation. It has high archaeological and artistic value for which the site has been declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

3) Polonnaruwa 



Polonnaruwa is the medieval capital of 11th century AD. It is a UNESCO world heritage site known particularly for its archaeological and Buddhist heritage. The wonderful rock Buddha images and stupas are renowned all over the world. Once you are here, you must visit the Lankatilaka Temple, Nissanka Latha Mandapaya and Polonnaruwa Vatadage.

4) Nuwara Eliya 



Nuwara Eliya or alilLittle England' is situated on a plateau that is surrounded by mountains, waterfalls, hills and tea plantations on all sides. Nuwara Eliya experiences a cool weather throughout the year the architectural style of the buildings in this region reminds one of the strong influences of the erstwhile British Heritage.

5) Kitulgala 



It is a very small town that is located on the fringes of the Kelani River. It is in the wet zone rainforest area and receives monsoons twice a year. No wonder, it is one of the wettest places in the country. The area is very famous for white water rafting other activities such as jungle trekking, mountain biking and bird watching.

6) Kandy 



Kandy is famous for being the manufacturing hub of gem stones. It is home to the famous Temple of Tooth Relic which is regarded as one of the venerable places for the Buddhist population of Sri Lanka. In 1999, UNESCO declared it as a World Heritage Site Kandy enjoys a low crime rate and a cool climate throughout the year

7) Spice Garden 



The Spice and Herbal Garden is located very close to Kandy. Here you can experience the traditional herbal medicine of Ayurveda and one can even sign up for a brief herbal massage to rejuvenate the senses. The tourists are encouraged to have the lunch at Spice Garden as it is a unique experience.

If you are a foreign national and want to visit Sri Lanka then you must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization or Sri Lanka ETA visa before arriving at the island nation. The tourists need to apply for the visa online and the process is fully electronic. Once the application has been submitted online, the ETA approval will be returned via email.
