Tournament History

In 2011, visual artist/designer and founder of The Saturday Sketching Sessions Art and The Mustache Creative Piaget Martelino met DJ Allrock, partnered up and together with hula hoop flow artist Sweet Caneos (Tempest) to do Busted Wednesdays and have since been sharing their passion for Art and Music.

Martelino who currently can be seen painting at 4 events says that it’s a priority for him to keep people guessing what he will do next. In the beginning he would paint less intricate versions of his studio pieces but soon felt that painting in the same style all the time made it repetitive and eventually would diminish the overall experience live art gives its viewers.

Mixing things up, he started doing small impressionist style paintings of the band or DJ and crowd to capture what was going on at the event, limited stencil prints of the posters he would make for gigs, big paper posters, matched the theme of the painting to the venue, etc. which made it more fun for both him and to those watching him work.

Wanting to make live art more interactive and involve the crowd so that they are part of the process and not just spectators, Martelino threw some ideas around and what resulted was the VS MODE which was first played last August 18th at their weekly Monday shindig at Rastro Tapas Bar and Restaurant on Burgos Circle, BGC.

Primarily an art battle, its random nature is a throwback to the games the Surrealist played and Automatism, a technique in creating art. VS MODE is part improv - part board game with a drinking game feel. Guests provide the evenings painting theme and subjects by writing down whatever comes to mind on small pieces of paper and place them into a box or hat.

When the artists are ready to begin, two words are drawn and read out loud, artist have 5 minutes to conceptualize their piece and the timer is set. Every 10 minutes a new piece of paper is drawn and read aloud and artists need to incorporate it into their paintings. Buying 2 shots allows a guest to change the game for 5 minutes by making up a new rule for one or both artists to follow. Once the paintings are done, guests cast their votes to decide who wins the evening’s art battle. Interested guests may purchase artwork created during VS MODE events directly from the artist.

The 1st VS MODE 4-PERSON ART BATTLE TOURNAMENT brings 2 male and 2 female artists together to duke it out with their brushes and see who comes out on top. The tournament will be split into three Saturday events, two elimination rounds which will be held at Pink Panda, 8pm on the 13th and 20th of September and the championship round at Crisp on 28th, 5pm on Oct 18. The four competitors must come prepared and ready to paint from the get go because slots will be drawn to determine who will go head to head for both elimination rounds 10 minutes before the first two words of the first match are chosen and read aloud. The third and final match at Crisp on 28th will have all artists painting simultaneously to determine the tourneys overall rankings.
