Philstage Gawad Buhay Awards Honors Creme of the Crop Artists for the Performing Arts

 Wazzup Pilipinas!

Congratulations to all the winners at the Philippine Legitimate Stage Artists Group (Philstage) Gawad Buhay Awards held at the at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater) of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) last June 6, 2014. It's my first time to see Audie Gemora dressed up like a drag queen while singing “Keep It Gay” pretentiously so attending the awards night was very much humorously rewarding for me as well.

Audie Gemora won the Outstanding Male Featured Performance in a Musical Award.....and I thought the movie version of The Producers was one of the most hilarious musicals I have ever seen. I am now hating myself for missing out on the Pinoy theater version. I hope there's a re-run soon so I could be the first one to sign-up.

The Gawad Buhay Awards are conferred to the best and brightest theater artists by a jury that views all the productions by Philstage member companies over the previous calendar year.

Christian Bautista and Karylle hosted the night dressed initially in their glamorous Cinderella theater show outfits which earned a resounding praise from the audience.

The three hour awarding ceremonies revealed Tanghalang Pilipino's Der Kauffman as the big winner for winning 7 theater awards.

Trumpets’ "The Bluebird of Happiness," an adaptation of Maurice Maeterlinck’s 1908 play "The Blue Bird" won four awards.

PETA's D' Wonder Twins of Boac, another adaptation (into a musical) of a Shakespearean classic, The Twelfth Night, scored three awards.

Former Miss Universe and Ballet Philippines' President, Margie Moran-Floirendo, was there to receive awards given to Ballet Philippines' modern dance production of the popular Shakespearean romantic comedy, A Midsummer Night's Dream, which won the top award for its category, as well as four other awards.

Red, the two-character play by the Actor's Actors, Inc, garnered two awards from Bart Guingona and Joaquin Valdez who won the Outstanding Male Lead and Featured Performance in a Play awards, respectively.

Music composer and master conductor, Josefino "Chino" Toledo, was honored for his works in the musical play about the life and times of the Katipunan Supremo Andres Bonifacio in Tanghalang Pilipino's San Andres B, which won for Outstanding Musical Direction and Original Musical Compostion.

Dance icon Lisa Macuja-Elizalde scored another Gawad Buhay! triumph: Outstanding Female Lead Performance in Classical Dance, for Ballet Manila's The Nutcracker. Her counterpart (male lead winner) was Jean Marc Cordero, for Giselle (Ballet Phillipines).

For modern dance category, BP's Rock Supremo won for Carissa Adea (female lead) and Earl John Arisola (male featured).

A couple of lifetime achievement awards (Natatanging Gawad Buhay) were also bestowed upon choreographer/scholar Steve Basilio Villaruz and actress Naty Crame-Rogers.

If my camera didn't go low-batt on me (my fault because I came from a hackathon event and forgot to check my batt life), I could have taken more photos. But I am an unfortunate soul to have only captured the first parts of the awarding ceremony.
