Asian LP Gas Summit 2014: Building a Safer Cleaner Energy Future with LPG

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Liquified Petroleum Gas or LPG is a vital source of energy for millions of people worldwide. It is a clean and  portable fuel that provides heat, light and power in both densely populated urban areas, as well as remote areas for all their everyday usage like cooking and heating.

Your friendly neighborhood pambansang blogger of the Philippines was a part of the Asian LP Gas Summit 2014 that happened last March 10-12, 2014 at the Manila Hotel.

It was an opportunity to learn about the LPG technology and the several technical facts and theories, both realistic and somewhat fictional issues, that surrounds its usage. A great number of experts both in the private and government sector were invited to share their expertise, studies, research and thoughts in order to educate the attendees and also to debunk the myths that somehow has given the LPG industry a tainted name - the reason why it has not really expanded its usage in the Philippines.

The first Asian LP Gas Summit event was conducted in the Philippines in 2011 to encourage the growth of the LPG industry there. It seeks to promote discussion and industry networking for the sustainable growth of the LPG industry with a focus on technology adoption, safety and consumer education. From household consumption to autogas, it promotes the adoption of LPG as the fuel of choice by providing a quorum for industry stakeholders to meet with policy makers, international technology providers and operators to exchange ideas, share best practices, and shape the growth of the industry.

It is very rare to be exposed to a large gathering of LPG industry experts, and an opportunity to network with possible new business partners in order to enhance the efforts in promoting the technology. It is best to understand the many different aspects in order to come up with better solutions that we can offer to the market.

The summit started out with an LPG Refilling Plant visit sponsored by Solane LPG. Many of the delegates joined the plant tour at Canlubang, Laguna. There were three batches who went there from the Manila Hotel and were introduced to the process and safety procedures at the refilling plant.

The location was very neat, clean and organized. They had a walk lane, identified by the yellow lines, for the safety of the observers. We were restricted to follow the walk lane as a precaution to avoid any accidents.

They had huge tank trucks there that are identified as trailer or rigid. Trailers are those trucks whose load can be disconnected from the truck itself, and they also have huge trucks that carry the LPGs that they call "Optimus", obviously named after the Transformer Autobot's leader Optimus Prime.

After having lunch at the LPG Refilling Plant, we proceeded back to manila Hotel and waited until 2 pm for the first activity of the summit that afternoon. It was a workshop that will give an introduction to LP Gas, good business and safety practices and to discuss about the global association called WLPGA. Mr. Dacid Tyler, president of WLPGA, conducted the workshop which included a few case studies for the attendees to work on at the latter part. The case studies included scenarios involving the government and the media. The next days were the continuation of the many talks conducted by many speakers from many sectors including the Philippines' Department of Energy.

Beside our room was the exhibit room where many of the participating companies are preparing their booths and getting ready for tomorrow's exhibition. The second day was the opening of the exhibition, were several companies with businesses related to the LP Gas industry participated.

The Asian LP Gas Summit was a huge opportunity to assemble together the key stakeholders within the LP Gas industry. We were able to focus on the benefits of an exceptional energy like LP Gas to all including the Philippine economy.

We must ensure that the Philippines is well positioned in developing LP Gas as a safe and sustainable industry by identifying the best business practices and developing action plans and a timetable to implement a series of improvements. Among the goals of the summit is to continue developing standards and codes of practice that are consistent and evolving with technology. It requires everyone to be accountable and understand their responsibilities to their staff, the consuming public , the government, their country and the world as a whole.

Don’t let technology and best practices pass you by! You should join the annual discussion on a range of exciting learning programmes and activities that will bring you up to date with the latest developments in LPG technology and market trends.

See you again on 2015 for the next Asian LP Gas Summit.
