Avril Lavigne Surprises Audience with Chad Kroeger Duet Live at Smart Araneta Coliseum

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Canadian pop-punk sensation Avril Lavigne rocked the Smart Araneta Coliseum last February 17 with her all-time favorite hit songs plus the massive turn-out of fans that were jumping up an down most of the time during her fabulous concert at the big dome. There are many new and younger artists so I never imagined she will still be able to draw a huge crowd.

My wife and I were very lucky to have attended her concert and getting a great seat at the same time. Though the waiting time was almost an hour, we spent it taking "selfies" using our smartphones, eating snacks like pizza, buttered corn bits, potato wedges, and drinking mango fruit shakes.  There were a lot of vendors roaming around so we were tempted to buy a lot from them so we won't get bored waiting and doing nothing. Next time we'll probably eat first before coming to another concert because the prices were like double from what is sold outside. We also spent some time observing the crowd as most of them are around their 20s and younger.

The concert started off with Avril wearing a Hello Kitty-inspired black and pink outfit for her “Hello Kitty”opening song. It was followed by her  2007 single “Girlfriend”  Half-way, Avril shouted “Manila!” then followed it with “Everybody put your hands up! Are you guys ready to have fun tonight?”

Other songs she sang next included “Rock ‘N Roll,” “Here’s to Never Growing Up,” and “I Always Get What I Want.”

There were also slow sentimental songs like “Hush, Hush” and then "Let Me Go" but even before she could continue singing the song which she said was very special to her because she wrote it with her husband, the crowd was surprised when Chad Kroeger went on stage to do a duet with Avril.

Avril continued with her performance singing her older hits namely “My Happy Ending,” “Don’t Tell Me,” and “Complicated” which had fans singing along. It's actually the most widely recognized and popular song of Avril known throughout the world and probably what put her to stardom. The song really has a catchy tune and its easy to sing along and remember the lyrics.

Avril performed her punk-rock track “Bad Girl.” while Marilyn Manson's photo was displayed on stage on the huge LED screen. Red was the color of the night that moment.

More of her greatest hits  followed like “He Wasn’t” and “Losing Grip”, plus what we thought was the last, “Sk8ter Boi.

When they turned off the lights on stage and when the band members left the stage already, my wife was asking me to stand up and o home already, but when I heard the fans scream "More, more, more!", I knew Avril will be coming back for an encore performance.

True enough, the band members all came back and prepared their instruments again. Avril said  it's time for the audience to sing this time. She then gave us three more songs : “What The Hell”, “Smile” and “I’m With You.” The crowd sang along with the songs especially the last one whom she allowed us to sing the chorus on our own.

"It's a damn cold night
trying to figure out this life
Won't you take me by the hand
take me somewhere new
I don't know who you are but I"

The venue was almost filled with fans who were waving neon yellow, green and pink glow sticks plus many were also wearing lighted rabbit's tale headbands, and others were having fun with their fairy wands with lighted star-shaped ends. There was also a group who brought a banner which says: “We Love You, B*tch!”

It's Avril's fourth time here in the Philippines and it seems the fans are still hooked with the 29-year old performer who still has the angst and spirit of punk. There were many opportunities during her concert when Avril kept on expressing her love to her fans by saying “I love you, Manila!”, “Thank you, Manila!” and “We are so happy to be here tonight. Thank you for being here with us.”

Organized by Midas Productions, the Manila concert is the 5th stop in the Asian leg of the Canadian singer’s Avril Lavigne On Tour. Her Asian tour began in Osaka, Japan last January 31 and her last stop will be in Taipei, Taiwan on March 16.
