Exploring the Grand Canyon on Google Maps

Back in October, Google Maps took the Street View Trekker (its newest camera platform) to the Grand Canyon for its inaugural collection of 360 degree imagery. This is one of the latest projects Google has worked on to further its goal of providing people with the most comprehensive, accurate and easy-to-use maps in the world.

The imagery has now been processed, stitched together, and turned into panoramics that are available on Google Maps. The collection includes more than 9,500 panoramas from trails along the Grand Canyon south rim and nearby Meteor Crater.
Now anyone around the world -- from armchair explorers to real-life travelers -- can virtually explore this historical and breathtaking place that has only been accessible on foot. Check out the imagery and see for yourself!

Take a trip to the Grand Canyon...right now! As of today, you can now view the breathtaking wonders of the Grand Canyon on Google Maps with Street View, brought to you by the first ever Street View Trekker expedition

Whether you’re planning an upcoming hike, or want to learn more about the Earth’s geological history, Google Maps can help. Today, we’re releasing panoramic imagery of one of the world’s most spectacular and remote natural wonders: the Grand Canyon. These beautiful, interactive images cover more than 75 miles of trails and surrounding roads, making our map of this area even more comprehensive, accurate and easy to use than ever before.

Take a walk down the narrow trails and exposed paths of the Grand Canyon: hike down the famous Bright Angel Trail, gaze out at the mighty Colorado River, and explore scenic overlooks in full 360-degrees. You’ll be happy you’re virtually hiking once you get to the steep inclines of the South Kaibab Trail. And rather than drive a couple hours to see the nearby Meteor Crater, a click of your mouse or tap of your finger will transport you to the rim of this otherworldly site.

This breathtaking imagery collection was made possible with the Trekker. Our team strapped on the Android-operated 18-kilogram backpacks carrying the 15-lens camera system and wound along the rocky terrain on foot, enduring temperature swings and a few muscle cramps along the way. Together, more than 9,500 panoramas of this masterpiece of nature are now available on Google Maps.

So no matter where you are, you don’t have to travel far or wait for warmer weather to explore Grand Canyon National Park. Check out some of our favorite views on our World Wonders site where you can find more information, facts and figures about the Grand Canyon, or in the updated Street View gallery, and happy (virtual) hiking!

Additional information:

How much of the Canyon did you collect?

This collection features more than 9,500 panoramas from the south rim of the Grand Canyon and nearby Meteor Crater. The imagery covers more than 75 miles of trails and surrounding roads.

Why did it take so long to take the raw data and make it ready to go live?

We use cutting edge technology to digitally reconstruct these locations, stitch the still images together into panoramic views, and we are constantly trying to improve the speed and efficiency of our process. Each location has its challenges which can vary the time required to launch them, and in this case, it took several months to process and prepare the imagery for release on Google Maps.

How do I access this imagery?
You can simply search for the Grand Canyon in Google Maps, and once you’ve zoomed in on the area, drag the orange pegman icon on the left of your map screen onto an area that becomes highlighted in blue. From there, you’ll be able to pan around and check out the imagery in 360-degrees.

What is the Street View Trekker?
The Trekker is a wearable backpack with a camera system on top. The Trekker is walked through pedestrian walkways or trails on foot, and automatically gathers images as it goes. Like our other Street View platforms, the Trekker has the Google Maps logo on it is decorated with Google designs.

Why did you go to the Grand Canyon?
The Grand Canyon was the perfect place to debut the Trekker because the narrow trails, ridges, and pedestrian-only access demonstrates exactly why the Street View systems have evolved from a Car to a Trike to a Snowmobile for the slopes and now to a Trekker. The imagery of various trails along the South Rim is now available online through the Street View feature in Google Maps, enabling anyone across the world to virtually experience the Grand Canyon and its majesty.

Chops Chicago Steakhouse Offers a Power Lunch Fit for a King

Steaks are the most elite, and at the same time most expensive, cut of meat you can throw on a grill, or have it pan-fried or broiled, whichever tickles your fancy. I think it’s a life-long quest to hone a cooking technique, in my case – grilling, so that one can cook steaks charred crusty on the outside and perfectly medium-rare on the inside. I would even sometimes intentionally press on the steak to show the grill marks just to make it look more impressive and appetizing. It is a great talent to know how to cook steaks right to a medium rare to get a flavorful and tender dish that’s going to be a carnivorous pleasure for those who’s rarely tasted this meaty pleasure. But it looks like my search for a fulfilling and satisfying steak meal – that looks and tastes good both inside and out – is finally over.

Chops Chicago Steakhouse offers a steak experience you will definitely drool all over.  The thought of eating on a chopping board was actually an awesome experience already, and when I tried it personally – slicing that perfectly cooked medium-rare steak that was all pinkish and juicy inside – I felt like a king. Imagine also my delight as I savor every bite of the well-seasoned and seared steak meal. I was in steak heaven that day.

The ambiance was undoubtedly very elegant – and very appropriate for executives wanting to have a luncheon meeting the classy style

The complimentary appetizers, may it be the Whole Wheat Rolls or the Ciabatta bread, already says well about Chops Chicago Steakhouse. Though the breads were already good on their own, the whipped butter added just the right flavor. The soup of the day really brought out an appetite. If  the soup was that good already, I can’t wait to try out the main dish. The matching Caesar Salad was a a delightful combination of crispy Romaine lettuce, bacon bits, hebed croutons, parmesan cheese, black pepper and classic Caesar dressing -  I swear I ate every last bit of the veggies.

The Whole Wheat Rolls was totally new for me thus it was a fascinating sight to see.

The Ciabatta spread with some butter was another treat to start a hearty meal.

The Cream of Asparagus Soup – with an actual piece of asparagus – was the Soup of the day starting the Executive Powerlunch.

A closer look at my sliced steak truly convinced me how lucky I am to be partaking the Executive lunch at Chops Chicago Steakhouse.

The Beer Battered Onion Rings with mayo dip sidings hit it right on the spot for me. It is just one of the many delectable choices for the Executive “power” lunch meal set for only 888.

The House Fries was simply irresistible. It has the right crunch and taste much better than what you’ can find from any other fancy restaurant.

The Roasted Beef Marrow with Toasted Crostini and Parsley Salad at the sides was phenomenal but a bit dangerous .

The Skillet Buttered Corn had a generous serving of butter making it creamier than what we usually encounter.

Who can resist the Potato Overload? Sort of a cross between a mashed and baked potato with a sprinkle of everyone’s favorite bacon on top.

You can try the Steamed Asparagus if you are more of the health conscious eater – and yes that’s butter on top.

The Smoked Bacon and Garlic Broccoli made me love broccoli even better – and who in his right mind doesn't love bacon?

The Creamed Spinach with Organic Eggs and Parmesan Cheese was uniquely served in a pot. Wow! Talk about presentation, and surely made eating spinach a lot more interesting

The Pomegranate Honey Mustard with Black Pepper Dip was a lot more satisfying chowing down on the tender meat that easily comes off from the bone ribs.

For the bacon lovers, they have Charbroiled Slab of Bacon – now that’s pure food ecstasy to the max!

You will definitely find room in your stomach just to try these cigar shaped desserts they call the Dark Chocolate Cigars.

I rarely go up to the upper floors of Greenbelt 5 to dine – so it was a treasured discovery finding Chops Chicago Steakhouse up there.

Don’t you just love discovering great food choices that’s conveniently located at a sophisticated venue appropriate enough to bring your celebrated guests or VIPs and treat them over  to a great tasting executive power lunch intended to satisfy even the pickiest eater. Chops Chicago Steakhouse was indeed a great find for us. I would love to take the head honchos of companies there to impress them and win their hearts and stomach……and I’m pretty sure many will agree with me when I say it’s the best place to land a sure deal or contract. Heck, its the best place to bring even a king!

La Petite Camille: Can't Get Over the Sumptuous Vietnamese Cuisine

Wazzup Pilipinas!

La Petite Camille Vietnamese restaurant has a very interesting name – which I found out later to mean French for “Little Girl, Camille”. The name of the restaurant reflects the French culinary influence of Vietnamese cuisine as Vietnam was actually a French protectorate for many years prior to its independence.

The restaurant had its soft opening just last December 2012 – too bad I have not heard of them earlier – and is made up of the same group that has brought in concepts such as Super Bowl of China and Yomenya Goemon Japanese Spaghetti House in partnership with Mama Fong, owner of La Petite Camille in Millbrae, California.

Mama Fong, the proud owner of La Petite Camille, brought with her the passion for cooking and finds her ultimate enjoyment in seeing her restaurant’s patrons enjoying the dishes she freshly prepares herself using her own unique family recipes. She is very hands on and detail-oriented with her restaurant business in the US and she, along with immediate members of her family, actually still freshly prepare the dishes at the La Petite Camille restaurant in the US.

Las Flores: The Spanish Restaurant with a Catalan Twist

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Hola!  Are yored of the usual stuff?

How about trying something different for your drinks and have it served in very unusual mugs, jars and other extraordinary containers served with your authentic Spanish cuisine - with a touch of Catalan influence.

You might have already learned way back in grade school that a great deal of our culture in the Philippines has Spanish  influences. The Philippine culture, including the food that we eat and most especially how we cook it, owes a great deal from our Spanish neighbors.

However, it was actually a surprise for me to see that most of the meals served at the Las Flores Spanish Restaurant were creatively served to us. Most of the dishes were served on different plates and all the specialty drinks had their unique glasses or jars. The food and drink tasting revealed that all food and drinks, including the dessert, served to our group were appealing to our taste.

Carlos Celdran Found Guilty of "Offending the Religious Feelings"?

“@CarlosCeldran found guilty of the crime of "offending the religious feelings.”

So only Catholics have the right to be offended? How about atheists who (not all) are often getting grilled in mass. They don't have the right to be respected for their opinion?

This is ridiculous! I'm a Catholic and I'm pretty sure Jesus believed in forgiveness and tolerance. I was expecting our priests to make an effort to converse with Mr. Celdran but this is plain vindictive. Getting people jailed for expressing themselves is something a zealot would do. Strangely enough, this is similar to what Herod did to John the Baptist.

I don't think that's the issue, though. If you feel offended by anyone, you are free to go to the courts and sue anyone.

The Catholic Church has too strong links to the government. America is heading down that path now if I recall.

Heys Luggage : Puerto Galera Photo Shoot with A Heavy Duty Bag

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Who says a luggage can only be used for air travel? Heys Luggage - was the star at our Puerto Galera boat ride. My Heys luggage has the best seat in the boat - the front.

Can you see my Heys travelling luggage that I brought with me to Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro?

Its filled to the brim with all my stuff that will be used for a product photo shoot - tough and reliable even via road or boat travel.

There would be always be times when you really need a heavy duty and dependable luggage where you can put in as many possible items for a task that requires you to carry a lot of equipment, materials and other stuff. You would need a tough luggage to weather all the bumps and bruises - and even the threat of getting wet especially on a trip that requires you to take on a one and a half hour of boat ride from the Batangas pier all the way to the island paradise called Puerto Galera.

Chops Chicago Steakhouse Offers a Power Lunch Fit for a King (or Queen)

Apparently, the sumptuous medium-rare steaks are not the only dishes that's great at Chops Chicago Steakhouse..

You also have to try their Dark Chocolate Cigars for a heavenly dessert experience that comes with their Executive power lunchset meals - also includes the Soup of the Day, Caesars Salad, and of course, the main dish - Wisconsin Tenderloin!

Travel Magazine Launches Its Travel Now Campaign

I believe everyone likes to travel every now and then, especially those who are adventurous and curious to explore new sights, culture and tradition. You can only appreciate the wonders of our world by going around and discovering different places, along with the food, the traditions, and the people.

If given the opportunity I would prioritize travelling the Philippines, but would of course would not hesitate and think twice if given a chance to go on a trip outside the country.

TRAVEL Magazine, the lifestyle publication for passionate adventurers, launches its TRAVEL NOW campaign, with a 4-day photo exhibit at the Fashion Walk of Greenbelt 5. The exhibit runs from January 24-27, 2013 and features local and foreign ‘bucket list’ destinations and sights with quotes from Pinoy celebrity adventurers on why they TRAVEL.

Entrepreneurship on the Verge of a Threat

This might just kill entrepreneurship in the country..

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) will hold operators of buy-and-sell websites liable for any entrepreneur who makes money online without first registering with the bureau and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

“We will file cases against sellers who fail to issue receipts and pay taxes, but we will also file cases against the websites which provide such service,” BIR Commissioner Kim Jacinto-Henares said.

She said website operators engaged in buy and sell are similar to that of mall operators that allow entrepreneurs to lease a commercial space in their establishments.

BIR: We can go after Sulit, AyosDito and YOU for unregistered, untaxed online sales

Just when everything gets cooler then government pull off yet another "disappointer".

'Sadly' enough this is not the Government creating a new law. If they did, we always had the Supreme Court as option.

This is merely an influential person who has made bullying the budding online sector her preferred occupation. Even sadlier [sic] is that lack of competence does not make Ms. Henares impeachable.

you guys can organize a forum with other players and possibly BIR to drum up info and clarification on matter. Lots of small sellers here aside from the platform companies.Just like FOI, people need to band together. For Ebay US they impose at least a ceiling - USD20K per year or more than 200 listings before a seller can be taxed. It's also the responsibility of the seller to apply the tax on the purchase, not eBay. They also have compliant tax computation software for sellers. Just some thoughts. I sell online intermittently and was planning to relaunch my store.

DCOM will be having a meeting this Friday to discuss this. Our goal is to get the major players on the same page and engage with BIR.

Hope we can have a public forum open to sellers also.

Everything seems vague. Will they also ran after people who sell their old stuff online? I think the BIR is barking at the wrong tree. They should start running after those who benefit from gov't. services without paying taxes.

Buy and sell websites are classified ad services. They are no mall that sellers "rent" space from. So lame of BIR to pass the burden to website owners.

Google Launches their Philippines Office

Google Inc announced its deepening investment in the Philippines by opening a new office in Manila.

The Philippines has a vibrant and growing online community with over 33 million Internet users, a number that is likely to double in the next 3 years (ADMA 2012). The new office is in line with Google’s ongoing efforts to provide and improve its services for its Filipino users, to help Filipino businesses grow both locally and globally and to tap into local talent. Google is currently hiring for its Manila office. Job openings can be viewed on its website, www.google.com.ph/jobs, in the coming days.

“The Philippines is a key country in Southeast Asia in terms of its digital economy and tech-savvy population. This new office will allow us better engage with our local users, partners and advertisers. Over 33 million Filipinos access the Internet regularly to study, shop, search for ideas, opportunities, create news businesses, and connect to each other. And Internet use in the Philippines is set to grow exponentially. Research indicates that the number of Filipinos online will have nearly doubled by 2016!” said Julian Persaud, Managing Director of Google in Southeast Asia.

“We are delighted that Google has decided to set up an office in Manila,” said Undersecretary Manuel L. Quezon III. “Their presence is a testament to their commitment to the Philippines. We hope that Google's entry will encourage more local businesses to go online and tap into international markets. We are looking forward to collaborating with Google more in the future.”

Narciso Reyes has been appointed Country Manager for the Philippines, bringing to his new role over 16 years of digital marketing and finance experience in Asia and the US.

“We’re excited to be deepening our investment in the Philippines with the opening of our office here in Manila. Our local team will be committed to providing better services to our Filipino users and to helping businesses -- large and small -- grow locally and globally, contributing to the growth of the Philippine economy. We envision Google as part of everyday Filipino lives and as a partner in the development of local communities, culture and business,” said Narciso Reyes.
