Deities of Philippine Mythology

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The deities of Philippine mythology are the gods, goddesses and diwatas worshiped by ancient Filipinos before the Christianization of the natives after the Spanish conquest of the Philippines. W

hile not as widely known as its European and Asian counterparts, they have similar elements and characteristics when compared to other mythologies.

Ancient Philippine mythology varies among the many indigenous tribes of the Philippines. During the pre-Spanish era, some tribes believed in a single supreme being who created the world and everything in it, along with lesser deities.

Others chose to worship a multitude of trees as an act of animism. Below are some of the gods and goddesses of the various ancient Philippine tribes:

Bathala - The Supreme God
Amanikable - The God of the Sea
Idiyanale - The Goddess of Labor and Good Deeds
Mayari - The Goddess of the Moon
Hanan - The Goddess of Morning
Apolaki - The God of Sun and War
Dumangan - The God of Good Harvest
Ikapati - The Goddess of Fertility
Anitun Tabu - The Goddess of Wind and Rain
Anagolay - The Goddess of Lost Things
Mangkukulam - The God of Fire
Mapulon - The God of Seasons
Galang Kaluluwa - The Winged God
Dumakulem - The Guardian of the Mountains
Manggagaway - The Goddess of Sickness
Sitan - The God of the Afterlife
Dian Masalanta - The Goddess of Love
Ulilang Kaluluwa - The Serpent God

Comments:

Who did all of these? Caparas? Prof.Eugenio? Roman Catholicism in the Philippines is Philippine Mythology, Sierra Madre, Apo and more. I don't mean this in any offensive way but... the drawings look like RPG characters.... hmmm... a good marketing idea for a MMORPG?

Ancient Filipino mythology creatures are not different with the gods brought by the Spanish before. Iyong panginoong dala ng mga spaniards ay myth din, pinalitan ang ating mga diwata! At tinatanggap naman ng mga Pinoy!

I am a Filipino but I only recognized a few of these and those are bathala, apolaki, mangkukulam, galang kaluluwa, mangagaway and ulilang kaluluwa... and also some the pictures doesn't match the figures of the myth creatures popularly known here like mangkukulam, it should be a old woman with long hair with a big casserole or a small doll.

Thank you for this. It's about time we Filipinos gave some respect to the members of our own mythical pantheons.*This is a repost from ASEAN Community - Philippines

  1. Lots of nice work sir, thank you for posting this.

Hi. my name is Jovencio Jimenez and Im a researcher about Philippine mythology.. I would just like to ask if you could participate in a survey that I made for my thesis, this involves the effect of an innovation of Philippine Mythology, by applying illustration from culture mapping. "Culture mapping", a method created by the author to create distinction and authenticity of the gods over other cultures. for more information you can visit my page at

    www.facebook.com/mitopilipinas

the survey only consists of 13 questions, and would take only 3-5 minutes of your time.
