Hey! Who doesn't love sandwiches? It's one of the easiest prepared snack or "baon" for school, work, outings, and other outdoor activities. Parties would always have sandwiches as part of their snacks or "merienda" offering. With the many varieties of breads available in creating sandwiches, the opportunities to surprise your guests are endless.
What is so great about sandwiches is that the number of sandwich combinations you can think of is countless thus it is a challenge to create one that will be surely enjoyed by your guests. It's all up your creativity and good taste to come out with one that will be a big hit.
Gardenia Bakeries Philippines Inc., scoured for the local culinary geniuses, specifically within ten universities, to discover "The Next Big Sandwich Hit"!
Among the schools targeted for the search was the Philippine Women's University (PWU) where I was able to witness a competition among five group of students all battling for the best sandwich creation.
I believe there was a total of 50 teams, 5 teams from each university, who initially fought for the recognition, and an elimination was held at the different schools to find out who among them will represent their school in the finals that will be held at the Glorietta Activity Center on October 28, 2013.
In nail-biting reality TV style, winners will be judged through points gathered from online votes, taste test, the use of a sponsored ingredient, the Mercato Centrale selling challenge, and the creation of three specialty sandwiches.
Top winning group will win a total of Php 200,000 in cash and prizes. The second place will Php 70,000 worth of cash and prizes, and the third placer will win Php 35,000 in cash and prizes.
At the Philippine Women's University, we were able to step into the kitchen where the five teams prepared their sandwich creations to be presented later to three judges led by Chef Dennis.
The judges will rate the winning sandwich plus there will also be votes coming from the audience who will choose their favorite from the bite-size sandwiches provided to them.
Voting was done through differently color-coded toothpicks signifying the color of each team.
In the kitchen, we witnessed how the teams cooked, sliced, diced, shredded, etc their ingredient to finally come out with two different kinds of sandwiches each, plus the bite-sized sandwich pieces for the audience.
The teams were composed of two individuals per team who shared the effort and skills in coming up with the most innovative, appetizing, economical and tasty sandwich. Each team were given a chance to present their creation and answer questions coming form the judges.
The three judges having a bite of all sandwiches presented by the competing teams. The judges were composed of a celebrity Chef, a representative from the PWU Academe, and a representative from Gardenia.
Team Three Decka win the PWU eliminations with their sandwich creation. I really liked their use of the ube halaya and watermelon in their sandwich.
Gardenia has been a favorite for bread choices! Though they are a bit more expensive compared to buying form the neighborhood bakeries, you are assured of great taste, finest ingredients, and superb taste!
Would you sacrifice quality over quantity. Definitely not!
My kids know which bread is the best for them and their choice would always be the breads from Gardenia. It is no wonder that the sandwich creations made from Gardenia bread products are awesome in taste!
