Las Farolas The Fish World : A Living Museum of Ornamental Freshwater Biodiversity

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Las Farolas.....The Fish World.

A living museum......The first and only one of its kind in the world !!!

One aspect of the environment which is adversely affected by man's wicked activities is the freshwater biodiversity which is among the most threatened in the world. Human activities such as overfishing, pollution and economic development have pushed a number of species to the brink of extinction. Estimates show that 7.5 million people depend on freshwater fish for food and income.

Another boon to the tourism industry, Las Farolas.....The Fish World opens its doors to the public in the form of a living museum of ornamental freshwater biodiversity.

The interior of Las Farolas is also a spectacle in itself. Henry Babiera of Moments Philippines got the inspiration for the design from the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines. From the indigenous dwellings to ethnic artifacts to the elaborate architectural remnants of pre-colonial and colonial Philippines—these are but part of the attraction. The concept, artistry and design is hundred percent Filipino, craftsmanship is also certified Filipino but technology is of world-class standard. The structure complies with building regulations for safety and it carries an Environmental Clearance Certificate from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA).

At Las Farolas, the journey begins with a visit to the old colonial churches that have witnessed the colorful history of the Philippines. Las Farolas rekindles the glory of the Spanish colonial churches by integrating the remnants of a great architecture in the design of the aquariums and biotopes.

River monsters, the fitting tagline, is used to describe the species of strange, bizarre, horrifying, ugly, monster-like ornamental freshwater species that will fill the spectacular aquariums and biotopes. Las Farolas, the living museum, will complete the four-part must-see and must-go-to destination of Tiendesitas, Fun Ranch, Ark Avilon and now Las Farolas.

The role of lighthouses as navigational aids had been the inspiration of Las Farolas, thus the name. Lighthouses, as guides, relate to Las Farolas.....The Fish World......The Water World.....in a way that the former illuminate and enlighten mankind on the pressing call for conservation and preservation of the dwindling freshwater biodiversity.

The quintessential Filipino dwelling, the "bahay kubo", is presented in a diorma that depicts the early life of the ethnic Filipinos. The "bahay kubo" is used in the design of aquariums to stand as compelling reminder of the vanishing culture and the need to preserve it to assert the Filipino identity.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) touted the Philippines as home to a megadiversity; however, it is the hottest of the hotspots. Man’s relentless drive towards human development has inadvertently destroyed the very habitat in which he survives and the devastating effects of climate change. It is partly the reason why Henry Babiera and his mentor, the late Don Rafael Ortigas, ventured on this first- of- its- kind- in- the- world project.

Las Farolas.....The Fish World is located at Frontera Verde alongside Tiendesitas in Pasig City. You can take C-5 or Ortigas Avenue to get there.

Grand Opening is on April 25!
