Rules Restaurant : Celebrating A Birthday at the Famous Oldest Restaurant in London

It was a very nice and great opportunity to dine and enjoy the lunch hour and the birthday celebration of Mr. Steve Saunders at the Rules restaurant, the oldest restaurant in London and one of the most celebrated in the world.

Rules was established by Thomas Rule in 1798 making it the oldest restaurant in London. Its located at 35 Maiden Lane, London WC2E 7LB, England (Charing Cross / Trafalgar Square).

Rules still flourishes and it serves traditional British food, specialising in classic game cookery, oysters, pies and puddings.

The restaurant's interior, noticeably antiquarian, is adorned with trophies, perhaps from past hunting expeditions; antelopes, deer, stuffed grouse. The room is cozy and elegant. Antique woodworks, plush cushions, and elegant furniture; all very pleasing to the eyes and comfortable.

Rules is fortunate to own the Lartington Estate, in the High Pennines,  where they learn how to source the highest quality game birds, roe deer and Belted Galloway beef. Rules is renowned for its game dishes and as such, the Game Season dates play an important part in shaping their menus.

In over 200 years, spanning the reigns of nine monarchs, it has been owned by only three families . . . just before The Great War, Charles Rule, a descendant of the founder, was thinking of moving to Paris; by sheer coincidence he met Tom Bell, a Briton who owned a Parisian restaurant called the Alhambra, and the two men decided to swap businesses. (During the war Tom Bell was an officer in the Royal Flying Corps, and left the running of the restaurant to Charlie, the Head Waiter, who had served Charles Rule for many years.)

During the second world war, Rules stayed open but its structure was reinforced with thick wood. It was only open from 1pm to 3pm and offered the compulsory rationed meals at five shillings but could offer copious rabbits, grouse and pheasants which were not rationed. A lady was the Head Waiter during the war. The restaurant could never open on Sundays because it was on Church grounds and could not get a licence.

In 1984 Tom Bell’s daughter sold Rules to John Mayhew, the present owner. Today Rules seats around 90 people and employs 90 staff.

We had a great meal at Rules while staying in London, the food and wine we selected were delectable.

  1. Yes, celebrating birthdays with your bestfriends is one of the choices but I think spending with your family is the best! Just spending your very special day with them is the best without spending it extravagantly. NO FURTHER EXPLANATIONS NEEDED.

  2. Celebrating birthdays are fun especially when you're with your bestfriends. It is very fun because you just not enjoy the party but also yourselves. You don't need to spend too much many just to celebrate you birthday. Everywhere you celebrate your birthday as long as you and your guest enjoy yourselves. That's the most important thing, you enjoy everything happening.

  3. Birthdays celebrated with "bestfriends" are fun because no one knows you like they do. And no one knows them like you do. Your deepest darkest secrets. Your biggest fears. Your highest visions and dreams. It's not necessary to celebrate it extravagantly, just keep it simple but as long as you'll have fun and you'll spend it with the right people.

  4. Your bestfriends are the ones who can understand you when the world seems to be against you, the ones whom you can turn to when you have problems, the ones who will give you advices. Celebrating special occasions are more fun with your bffs, for you enjoy lots of things when you're together. Yes, your birthday occur only once in a year, but it is not right to celebrate it extravagantly. As long as you had your family and friends with you, and you're all having fun, it could still be the best day ever.... :)

  5. Spending your special day with your bestfriends would really be fun. They are the ones who are with you most of the time specially in school. They are the ones who have seen you when you're freaking out and even adds up to the fun. But for me, nothing compares it with spending your birthday with your family. It doesn't need to be that grand and bizzare. As long as you spend it with the ones you love, it will surely be beyond compare.

  6. Celebrating one's birthday with family and friends is always something to look forward to especially in this day and age when people are often busy at school or at work that they tend to forget to spend quality time with their loved ones. This becomes the perfect opportunity for them to catch up on each other's lives, discuss possible concerns, share stories and talk about anything and everything under the sun.

I am not a believer though, in having an extravagant celebration year after year. Perhaps, if finances shall permit, during milestone birthdays (e.g. 18, 40, 65), taking your family and friends out to a special restaurant would be alright, but being the practical person that I am, I guess I would rather prepare a home-cooked meal in varying themes, like Italian this year, Greek the following year, Filipino, and so on. After all, what should matter more than the place where you celebrate the birthday, is the company that you keep.

  7. Birthday is not just a celebration it a day of thanksgiving and forgiving. It is best celebrated with our loved ones, close relatives and friends. IT NOT THE PLACE, I WOULD PREFER IT AT HOME WITH HOME COOK DISHES. Most probably for my 25th,50th birthdays would be in a selected restaurant with best tasting dishes.

  9. I can't deny the fact that spending your birthday with friends is a happy experience, but I believe that no one can surpass the joy your family can give. Celebrating your birthday with your family is much more memorable, much more meaningful. In celebrating my birthday, I'd rather not spend too much. I am more comfortable of having a simple celebration in a simple place, with special people, on my special day.

  10. Celebrating your birthday is the best day for you. You expect gifts and greetings. But being with your best friends are really remarkable. I will celebrate it extravagantly if I have the money but I'm contented with the laugh trips they gave on my birthday.

    I love you B.A.N.G.S

  11. Spending your birthday with your family and friends is really great! No need to say whether it's more fun celebrating it with your bestfriends. I believe that you can spend extravagantly in your birthday when it's "the traditional milestone birthday" (7,18, etc) But not every year. The important thing is that you and your family/friends had fun that day.

  12. Celebrating your birthday not just with your bestfriends, but also with your famiy, is fun. Because they're the people who knows you best, and they are the people who loved you at your worst. I believe that spending your birthday extravagantly every year is not necessary. The important thing is to thank God for another year to spend more happy moments with your loved ones.

Spending birthday with my family and my best friends is very great. I dont think I need to spend extravagantly, being with my family and best friends makes me feel special and I just want to have a simple birthday celebration. Being with the one's I love is like spending my birthday extravagantly.

  14. You are born on the of your Birthday so it really special to you because if that day have never come you won't be in this earthly state. Celebrating it with your bestfriends would make it more memorable to you and to them. For me just a simple celebration would do with your family an friends.

  15. Birthdays are fun to celebrate when you're with your best friends because they're the one who makes you laugh like there's no more tomorrow. They are the one who's always there to help and guide you no matter what kind of hardship you are facing. Birthdays should not spend extravagantly. As long as you have your loved ones with you, there is no asking for more.

  16. Birthdays are definitely more fun to celebrate with our best friends and of course with our family. Celebrating birthdays extravagantly is not a requirement for us to make it special for it is only happening once a year. For me, celebrating it simply will do; as long as you’re with your loved ones, it can be more extravagant than you’ll expect. :))

  17. I usually spend my birthdays with my family, but as I got older I have a separate celebration with my family then after it with my friends! It more fun with friends because they are within the same age range so we understand each other and can talk about anything and can also understand jokes that will be given. Because parents sometimes cannot understand their own kids! :)) If the money permits me to spend extravagantly, why not? :))

  18. I really enjoy celebrating my birthday with my best of friends basically because their presence always makes me mirthful (even during days that are not my birthday.
I think we all have our own ideal ways on how to celebrate our birthday. While others enjoy it the extravagant way, I'd rather spend this once in a year event in the simplest way, a time with my friends and family and a solitude time to thank God for another year I have gone through and another year I am blessed with :)

  19. I think that birthdays are better celebrated with family rather friends. I think in celebrating a birthday, we should consider all that is happening around us. For example, Your birthday is a week after a storm which destroyed many houses. Maybe instead of celebrating extravagantly, we should help our fellow men.

  20. Spending birthdays with your true and close friends and family is one of the best and memorable thing could happen in your life because you're with your love ones. I don't think spending extravagantly for your birthday is right, what important is your friends and family's presence.

  21. Spending birthdays with your friends, best friends and your family is more fun. It's like sharing the feeling of gratitude to our Lord that he gave me a chance to live more and more. For me, I don't think spending extravagantly for my birthday is right, what important is I should be thankful to our Lord for another year of my life and having a time with my friends, close relatives and my family.

  22. I love spending my birthday with my family and close friends. Just give us a karaoke machine, we'll be contented. Haha. It's okay to spend for your birthday but being that extravagant, that's totally not me. I never dreamed of renting the whole island of Palau just to celebrate my birthday. It's not about how extravagant your party is. It's about the people you spend it with.

  23. Spending your birthday with your friends, best friends, and family is the best way on celebrating your birthday. Spending birthdays with them is like sharing experiences together building greater relationship. Spending too much on birthdays is alright for me as long as you can afford it but a simple celebration is better as long as you are with your love ones and be thankful to God for another year He has given to you.

  24. Birthdays are annual celebrations that should be observed not extravagantly but delightfully. It could be with your family or your friends or both!
It's never about the amount of money spent but of the amount of laughters produced and memories manufactured. For as long as you have the people emotionally and mentally stimulating, nothing could ever be better.

  27. For me, birthdays should always be special. For it to become special, you’ll need to invite your friends, more specifically, your best friends. Best friends are the people who are there whenever you have a problem and they are the one who really know who you are. Of course, with them in your party, everything is going to be wonderful. Spending your birthday extravagantly? That is I think UNNECESSARY. You don’t need lots of things just to celebrate your birthday. The only thing that important is the people around you and seeing everyone having fun.

  28. Your best friends are your walking journal. They like, know every little thing about you, especially your birthday and how you want to celebrate it. I did it once, and it was fun. really.
Celebrating your birthday, especially with your best friends, for me, doesn't necessarily need to be extravagant. It's the moment with them that counts, maybe a couple of foods and a good talk can already overcome the extravagant celebration.

  29. Birthdays are more fun when celebrated with friends, best friend, family and others. People who touched your lives for the past years all together for one special reason. Your Birthday. Having thankful for them being there for you for the past year, and expecting, wishing that they will still be there for years ahead. I haven't celebrated my birthday extravagantly before.

  30. Birthdays are more fun when celebrated with your bestfriends because they are your peers. Those people who understands you,who cares for you,and who will always be there no matter what. They are your second family.I think birthdays can be celebrated without spending too much.It can be a simple reunion with friends and family and most especially, you have to thank God for giving you all those blessings.

a perfect birthday doesn't need to be costly, because your family , your friends and the memorable moments it has all counts.

  32. I believe that "No Man is an Island".

People should celebrate their birthdays with friends and family to have more fun. It's more fun with them than you, yourself alone. Haha.

Extravagance will only take place if you will spend this much every year on your birthday. But, if it is not done so frequently, then it is okay.

My point is, let the person do what he wants. It's his birthday so let him spend money for something that he will definitely be satisfied for.

  33. Of course, birthdays are more fun when celebrated with you loved ones and best friends. We all know that this thing happens once a year, most probably it's okay to celebrate your birthday extravagantly if you can handle it, FUN..LAUGHTER..ENJOYMENT..BONDING..HAPPINESS.. I think with these words accompanied with your cool friends, surely you will have a big birthday blast.

  34. bestfriends always help you whenever problem comes, they are always beside you and join you in your stageyness , flirtiness and sossyness so they are important whenever my birthday comes.
no it is not important to spend to much at your birthday, a simple siomai, fried oreo and iced tea will do :)

  35. birthdays are more fun celebrating with your best friends because they saw you at your best, they also had you at your worst and your birthday is a celebration of another year being together through the good times and the bad times. celebrating it extravagantly is not very important. i believe that the happiest moments come out from the most simplest things, we don't need so much money to make something memorable. it doesn't matter what you're doing, it's who you're with.

  36. For me birthdays are really important and those people who remembered birthdays on facebook, SHAME on you. I want to say that forgetting my birthday is unforgivable. I often set traps for people who remembered my birthday on Facebook what Im pointing out is that I appreciate a personal greeting rather than virtual.
I often celebrate my birthday with my family and friends. I often spent my birthday with my best friends and if I do I really looking forward to it as is it is the last <3. I really enjoy when I spent my birthday with them I never forget them and I value that day more precious than any other dates in the calendar.
I know for the fact that birthday happens only once in ayear but I strongly disagree to spend birthdays extravagantly because I believe that as long as you celebrate the event whole hearthedly you can definitely appreciate it no matter what status of your life is. Just thank God that you have a birthday and for your family and friends you have.

  37. Birthdays are really more fun when you spend it with your best friends. Because most of the time you are with them. You have the same things you want to do and more. But nothing will be greater than spending it with your family who has been with you since you were born. For me, even though it only happens once a year I would not spend it extravagantly. Simple food and drinks will do. The people you spend with that day is really what matters.

  39. Birthdays. It is always fun when it is celebrated at a great place. But it will be greater if the best of your friends will come and celebrate it with you. Having them, you don't even need a place, just party it out with them and come what may. Spending too much on Birthdays is a matter of choice, it depends on the celebrant's status in life but it is not what it is important, the only day in the year that you should be special doesn't mean that you need to be extravagant about it. Just a little fun, laughter, and the presence of your loved ones and everything is all set.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Our birthdays will be even greater if this will be celebrated with our friends and family in a memorable place just like in a beach or in any extravagant place. I think spending on it will be worth it since this kind of celebration only comes once in a year.

  41. Birthdays that are celebrated with close friends are one of the best memories you can have, especially when you and your friends click together. It depends on the person whether he or she wants it to be extravagant or simple. Spending it by thanking God for another year of life is till the best celebration for me.

  42. Birthdays for me is a special occasion to strengthen the bond between our friends and families and relatives. It doesn't have to be elegant like eating in a five star hotel. What is important is that we share our very special moments with our love ones in that one special day of yours. I know it's awesome to have an elegant birthday, but still, what matters most is that your happy on the day of your birth. (:

  43. Celebrating Birthdays with friends is more fun since it promotes the fact that you are significant and special, although it is much better if we would celebrate it with someone special , someone who appreciates and loves you for more than anything else in this world of ours! n___n

Well celebrating it extravagantly is not essential , what is important is to revel with someone you like the most no matter how simple it may be. n_n

  44. Well, that's quite nice. I mean, aside from being able to celebrate it at such a fancy restaurant, being able to celebrate your birthday with bestfriends and people along those lines is very nice. Well, if that seems kind of extravagant, it really isn't, because isn't it that not everyday are you able to dine in such wonderful and renowned places? Well, if that doesn't really sound good, well to put it in a simpler statement, it's not about being extravagant. It's about celebrating your birthday. Well, that has been my kind of motto ever since I thought about it yesterday. You see, as I was kind of like meditating or something even though I don't really know how to and I just walk around and think even when there's no need to do so. Well, that being said, celebrating birthdays are great. So does being able to dine in places you know you might never be able to dine in except for this time. Well, you've just been able to hit two birds with one stone, and please do not take it literally. I myself would not be able to enjoy dining alone, as I would most likely want it more to be with my friends, whoever they may be. And please do not think that I'm planning to run away and let them pay the bill in the end, as that is too just plain too risky.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Personally, I'd rather share my birthday with my family and relatives than my friends. My family has a hard time coping up with each others schedule so birthdays are usually our time of reunion. We try to spend the most out of it. It would be fun celebrating your birthday with your friends but it would be more memorable if you would spend it with your family. Friends fade away but your family doesn't.

Extravagance doesn't always determine happiness. Sometimes, you'd enjoy a simple meal than a lavish buffet. It depends on how you look at it. It depends on who you are with at that special day of your life.

  46. For some people their birthday is really special. But for me it's not. It's just like another ordinary day of the year except the fact that people greet me on that day because it's so called "MY BIRTHDAY". Birthdays are more fun when celebrated with best friends because they are the people who make you happy. "Should you spent it extravagantly since it happens just once every year?" I don't think so. We should be practical.

  47. Birthdays happen once in a year.. But my parents raise me not to be ambitious one. They raise me just a simple child and be contented for what food we have in our table when we celebrate our birthday. Anyway birthday is not about the extravagant things, delicious foods and how "bonggacious" your birthday is, it is more fun to celebrate with your best friends or your family eventhough you don't have those things because i'm 100% sure that they will understand and accept what you prepare to them even though it is not that extravagant.

  49. Since it shall be my birthday, I will celebrate for myself with God and his gift for me, my life, which is basically what's the commotion that day(haha!). If I am given the chance, I am not letting other people involved in this day focused on only me. I will not invite anyone for I think that I'm being selfish that I want my birthday to be my day alone, that everything that shall happen on that day is for me. I want them to continue their lives. I don't want to be a burden.

But celebrating it with the celebrant's loved ones is way better than the best friends alone. The family and also God should always be invited in the celebration of one's life.

  50. Birthdays are the 3rd most important occasion for a simple person. 1st is Christmas, and the 2nd one is the New Year. These events have many similarities. First, these 3 events are celebrated with your loved ones (best friends, family, relatives, etc.). Second, it is celebrated once a year. Lastly, we celebrate during these events. It is not important whether the event is celebrated extravagantly or just simple. A simple prayer will help you enjoy these events. Gratitude to everyone who contributed in your life is also a good way to celebrate it. Birthdays are fun. Enjoy it. :)

  51. I agree that birthdays are more meaningful and memorable if celebrated with the ones who are important to you. After all it is the day that our good Lord has bestowed you the life and made you part of your family as well as the entire world. So yeah, we should never forget not only our birthdays but as well as the birthdays of our family and friends. It really means a lot to them the same to us.

I am not really against in celebrating it extravagantly but why not, as long as you got the budget for it then do it. It's up to the celebrant's choice to how he/she should celebrate his birthday. Although for the sake of practicality, we should celebrate it as simple as possible. What matters most is not the food and money you spent for the celebration rather than it is the memories and the fun you had in celebrating it.

  52. GENUINE HAPPINESS is the most important thing in every birthday. It's an annual celebration of the release from a mother's womb. It's also a celebration for the mother who carried it with her for a span of 9 months! Happiness & Gratitude should reign during those days and not a pool of luxurious fashion devices from Paris & Milan. It's about the priceless laughter, smiles, tears of bliss and thoughtful acts.

I can't blame those people who chooses to spend their birthdays with thousands, even millions of material happiness because it's their WAY OF LIFE. It's what makes them genuinely happy. :)

  55. Celebrating the day you've aged together with someone important to you is definitely a great feeling. Reminiscing the days and years you've spent with them and laughing with them at your very special day. It's not about how extravangant nor simple the celebration is, as long as the important persons in your life is with you. And every single day you've lived in this world , they never left your side is the most important things that matter.

But I don't think that we should have an extravagant celebration of our birthdays because as i have said it's always about the memories that we made once a year with our loved ones and praising God for giving you another year to continue our life hear on earth and also to thank for all the blessings that we received.

In celebrating our birthdays, extravagant party or fancy restaurant are not important but the memories and moments of the celebration are the very important things. Celebrating our birthdays with our family and loved ones and creating and treasuring memories are the true meaning of celebrating that special event.

  60. Yes it is fun to celebrate your birthday with your best friends cause they make you feel the most important person in their lives. But is more fun to celebrate it with the person who really loves you no matter what occasion you have. ;) No, it's not about celebrating it extravagantly, it's about being happy and thankful that you have survived another year here on earth. :)

  61. I am the kind of person who's so much excited for her birthday even though it is still months away, because I always want it to be special. I like celebrating it both with my friends and my family.

But last year, I was so busy I didn't have much time to celebrate it with those people I love. But what made it so damn special? It is when I realize that my REAL friends would make time for me just to make my day PERFECT. And although I didn't have time for myself, they gave theirs to fill mine. :) I love my friends! And my family? My mom and I started celebrating it at 11pm to 3am the next day.

The thing is, it is not a law to make it extravagant, fancy and everything nice. It is the memories with the people you love that counts.

So celebrating our birthday with our bestfriends is fulfilling the 110 percent of our lives. :D It is so glad to be with them during our birthday. But we should never ever forget that celebrating our birthday also with our family is the BEST! :)) It means that we're thankful to them with all they've done to help us become better persons. We should also remember that we shouldn't spend too much for celebrations.Just enough, because the bonding and love that we share with our love ones is the one that matters.

I don't think that a person should spend extravagantly just because it's his/her birthday. I know people who just remember their birthday the day after.

Specially they are the people who valued and loved for the rest of the years who are there with in every time of your life and its very memorable to have them as a part of that special day of your life. And that what makes it special to be with the people who made you and treat you special. 69. I truly believe that bonds are more important than setting. No matter where you go in your birthday, if it is with the ones closest to you, then certainly, you will have a blast. Well, if I could afford, why not?

  70. I always celebrate my birthday with my befriend. Of course, best friends have always been there beside you, he or she knows you most. It doesn't have to be that extravagant, as long as you enjoy the company of each other, you can have any type of celebration.

  71. Birthdays do not actually require to be celebrated with people whom you call best of your friends. The fun we experience depends on how we make moments be at their happiest state. Even a simple celebration will do good. ;))

  72. Birthdays are fun celebrated with our bestfriends. True i say to that, because you can be whoever you are, you can do whatever you want but they'll always see you as their bestfriend, you can share laughs and memorable moments together but to me celebrating a birthday with our family is the greatest.

I don't think that we should celebrate it extravagantly just because it happens once every 365 days. To me as long as the moment you celebrated your birthday with the people you love, the warmth of the place we call HOME, the perfect smile given to you by your friends, the laughs we all shared, the presence of the people close to us and the memories we all mark into our hearts and as long as their is a sparkle of happiness that we feel inside us, we can already call it a Birthday :D

  73. Birthday? What is Birtday? It is your SPECIAL DAY celebrated with your family and maybe with your friends. In my case, BOTH are special. As some people say, "friends fade away" so why not make the most out it? Right?

Celebrating birthdays with persons you love means a lot to me. Celebrate it anywhere you like. What matters the most is that, someone remembered you on your birthday it doesn't need to be very extravagant nor fancy. Just be with them and ENJOY your SPECIAL DAY with them. Love from someone important to you is the most beautiful birthday gift of all.

  74. Birthday! Ah! It's when i feel that i am the best and the superior on that day. Like i am the queen, the beauty queen, the mega star, the diamond, the gold in a soil. I feel very special :) What makes it more special is the celebration with your best friends or even better, with my family. Celebrating birthdays with your best buddies make one's day awesome. Seize the day! And feel like those other people doesn't exist. It makes you feel very special because they do remember your existence :)Maybe spending it an extravagant place can be a plus factor to your happiness but, isn't it that it's not about the place but the memories that you should be kept inside each other's mind? The most special gift a person could ever receive is the warmth of love from the people around him/her :)

  75. I've always dreamed of visiting London. But anyway, when it comes to celebrating birthdays, such places won't be necessary because what are these places for, if you aren't with your loved ones? It would be costly. For me, anywhere you, as long as you have your best friends with you, your birthday is already special. Just have fun. What matters most is that you're all together and you are all enjoying. We don't need to spend extravagantly because there are lots of other alternatives.

  76. It is more fun to celebrate with your bestfriends because your best friends know the real you. You can express your true feelings with them about the world without doubt and awkwardness. You want to be with your best friends in your birthday because you don't want to miss any single moment with them especially during your special day. In that way you can express your gratitude to them for allowing you to be a part of their lives. It is not about how extravagant and glamorous you and your best friends will celebrate, as long as you have the best-est things, feelings and moments, you have beaten already a party in a place like this. As long as all of you are happy and having a great time building moments and foundations to your friendship, that will be the greatest and memorable gift ever.

  77. Celebrating with your friends is not prohibited, what more if you celebrate with your best buddy? Celebrating your special day with the ones you love and your closest friends adds is a good idea of celebrating your birthday :) its doesn't matter where you are, it doesn't matter what food is served, it doesn't matter how long it takes, as long as you cherish every moment of your special day with the ones you love, i guarantee you you'll enjoy yourselves :D

  78. Londooon! <3 One of my dreams! To visit London! :D

Anyway :)) It's really fun to spend your birthday with your best friend because you're really comfortable with them that you can act silly together without you being judged, and I think that is one of the most awesome feeling in the world. :) But I don't believe that we should spend extravagantly during these once-in-a-year events. I know that we can make the most out of it without being spendthrift. Besides, it's how and who you celebrate it that matters the most. :)

  79. Rules Restaurant is a great place to celebrate a birthday party. With a classic British cuisine what more can you ask for? Its a great idea to celebrate birthdays with friends and best friends but specially its more great to celebrate with your love ones specially your family. I think that birthday celebrations are also special events that may be spend extravagantly but in order to have a great celebration of your birthday party is to be complete with your family and friends.
