Olympic Park is now called Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

The Olympic Park, now known as the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, in London, United Kingdom occupies an area straddling four east London boroughs; Newham, Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Waltham Forest.

It was the sporting complex situated to the east of the city adjacent to the Stratford City development built for the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Paralympics.

It contains the athletes' Olympic Village and several of the sporting venues including the Olympic Stadium and London Aquatics Centre, besides the London Olympics Media Centre.

The park is overlooked by the ArcelorMittal Orbit, an observation tower and Britain's largest piece of public art. After the Olympics, the park is to be known as Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II, though it will not be an official Royal Park of London. The park

Although the sporting venues in the Olympic Park were reduced in scale after the conclusion of the London 2012 Olympics, part of the legacy is to ensure the continued use of those facilities that are permanent, both as local and community resources and for major international sporting events that make use of the world class facilities constructed for the Olympics and Paralympics.

Photographs show the fast pace of change at the park since closing its doors to the public - with workmen setting about dismantling and adapting venues before it reopens in 2014.

Update (as of November 2012):

After a little over two months since the last swimmer took to the water during the Paralympics, the Aquatics Centre Zaha Hahid’s striking white building which played host to some of the most memorable moments of the Games as the iconic landmark of the London Olympics,  appears to be in a state of decay and a shadow of its former glory.

New photographs of the Olympic Park show paint peeling from the sides of the £269 million venue and what appears to be damp stains on the roof.

The temporary McDonald’s restaurant in the park - for six weeks the biggest in the world holding 1,500 people - has all but gone, with just part of the building’s shell remaining.

Bright yellow skips are dotted around the park, and most of the hospitality and broadcasting areas have been taken down.
The eye-catching bubblegum pink signage that helped direct visitors around the park has also vanished.

  2. Spending a lot of money building establishments such as Olympic Park for special events is legitimate. There are lots of benefits in building big establishments to me and my country. One is giving as entertainment. It allows us to enjoy, forget problems and satisfy our wants and needs. Also, it also gives job offers to unemployed people of our country.

  6. To invest such money in building establishments is really justifiable. Besides, this park is exclusive for special events. It does not simply help its country to develop progressiveness but also it can be a means of entertainment. As for its other benefit, it can also hire people to increase their country's employment rate.

  7. For a third world country like the Philippines, Hosting an Olympic Event is an opportunity to showcase our country and it's defenitely an income generating event especially the tourism industry. spending for the structures is an investment with high returns. Usually the structures serves as a monument to commemorate such an event. England decision was very legitimate not be questioned. Any they already belong to the few first world countries with lots of resources ....

  8. Spending money to build large establishments like the Olympic is reasonable. It will give good benefits like transportation improvements, tourism and jobs.
In order to transport the thousands of spectators, athletes, officials and media to the games, the transport links to the east of London will be upgraded.
Due to the increase in the profile of London during the Games, the UK is likely to see an increase in tourism.
With the Olympic Zone being in an area with high unemployment, the several thousand new short-term jobs is likely to be a big boost for the area.

  9. Being able to play host to the most important event in Sports every four years is truly an honor. It brings pride and joy to the host country, as well as substantial income through its tourism efforts.

People of various nations get to know more about the host country, learn their culture, meet their citizens and if lucky, they can get to see the tourist spots and take a mini-vacation as well.

Somehow, hosting the Olympic Games is treated by the country as a long-term investment for tourism purposes. The only question is whether or not they will be able to properly maintain the structures once the games are over so that tourists who may come after the games will still be able to appreciate its beauty.

  10. I think allotting and spending money for the establishment of several structures for special events is reasonable. As for the Olympics, hosting such kind of event is an honor, for the opportunity is rare.

Being the host country has its own advantages, especially to the tourism and business industry. It promotes job opportunities to Filipinos, thus increasing our employment rate. It will also increase our country's income, as people from different countries spend their money for everything they would need during their stay. People get to know more about the culture of the country they're in: the people, places, the Filipino cuisine, and several more.

Concluding this all, such events are worth investing for.

  11. Spending a lot of money to build Structures or Establishments for special events like the Olympics is TOTALLY worth it. Why? If the Olympics will take place in our country, there will be a lot of new job offerings so there will be a decrease in unemployment in our country. Also if we will have one, our country will be promoted.

  12. Spending a lot of money to build infrastructures for special events is reasonable and worth it. If our country is to host a special event, like the Olympics, it would be an honor. It would help increase the employment rate here in the Philippines since we need more workers for such a big event. Also, it would help the tourism industry of our country. People would also spend a lot of money buying things they need here, thus, increasing the income of our country.

  13. Spending money on these things is much better than spending money on nonsense. Building this establishment can bring benefits such as more job opportunities, another place to see, it can be used by our athletes to practice, Olympics can be held in our country and can also increase our popularity and economy.

  24. Every country has its own pride as a nation. Hosting it means a lot to one nation. It somehow shows the "social status" among the nations and the host itself. Being able to host it of course, and to build magnificent structures like the Olympic Park shows London's grandeur and it only proves that they still got the thing. I definitely feel that these will attract investors and tourists. Investors + tourists = happy economy for them. These will then provide their people additional work and such.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Spending a lot of money for this kind of event is very reasonable. We all know that this such event, Olympics is one of the most awaited competition around the world. it will definitely raise the country's tourism and of course, investors, tourists and other country people who will help the economy to bloom in this such event.

  26. Hosting events that are globally recognized is one hell of an opportunity. It promotes the country in every possible way, be it economically or industrially. Spending money for the construction of such infrastructures then, is very reasonable.

  27. Of course, everything had a reason on why they had been made. Olympics Park was made because of the Olympics and of course, it will promote their country. It will certainly appeal to tourists. People will come and it will become one of the famous places in London. That, of course, will be a big help on their economy.

  28. I thought that only the name was changed. But there was a lot of changes.

I do not have something against the huge money needed for this kind of establishment. In fact, from what I have learned from Economics, investment will then result to something great in the future. So, it is okay to spend money for this. Also, for the renovation that is taking place, there will be an increase in employment which will uplift their economy.

I think that it will not only benefit me, and my country but also the whole world. We all know that this establishment is famous around the globe and is usually the venue for huge events. This will definitely accommodate more people and will greatly satisfy them. - Maku

  29. I think it is essential for people to build these establishments for special events like the Olympics because it is a once in a year event and it will also benefit the country since tourists will be watching the said event. The benefit that me and my country gets is the same,my country will be progressive in tourism while it will be make me proud as a citizen of that country.

  31. There's nothing wrong with building such infrastructures, although it may really cost a lot, both in finance and resources, the benefits are somehow well worth it. To support my claim, the following are the reasons why it is reasonable to have such structure:

1.) Tourism which will boost the economy.
2.) Can be used for other sports events and other events like concerts and stuff.
3.) Can be used for recreational purposes as well as for athletes to train themselves.
4.) The government can also commission it's best architects to design the facilities which in turn can also showcase their talents as well as turn the complex into a piece of art.
5.) Open jobs for the people.
6.) Become one of the country's symbol of pride and glory.

  32. it would be a great honor for a country to host the Olympics because it is one of the events that everyone anticipates. spending lots of money for to build establishments important for the Olympics is not a problem because first, to host these sporting event, all interested national Olympic committees (NOCs) will first submit their application of bid to host the Olympics to the IOC. if they are interested to host the Olympics, of course they should consider first that they have sufficient money to spend on different expenses. second, on or after the Olympics, the country will gain a tourist spot which will be open for different foreigners. also, the country who hosts the olympics gets the respect they deserve.

  35. The Olympics is used to honor the God “Zeus” and held every 4 years in different countries. The Preparation of each country hosting the event spends more money to build infrastractures in just a span of time. If ever that the Philippines will host the Olympics I really suggests that the Government would spend a lot of money for this event because it came every 4 years and it’s a dream for a country to host this special event. I know it is a lot of money but proper budgetting will solved the problem.
Anyway, Many opportunities will be granted for us like Employment Rate will increase due to the infrastractures that will be made. Next, Tourism will increase also because of promoting the Philippines in the Olympics thus Employment Rate will amplify resulting to economic progress. Lastly, it can be used to prepare the athletes of our country that will soon be give us Honor resulting as a piece of pride and glory. For me the perks will simply just that I can now feel economic progress and I can now have something to brag to other countries. The matter here is just that No matter How big the establishment it will only result to benefits if you handle it properly but if not negative externality will be the consequence of our mistakes.

  36. Spending a lot of money for special events like the Olympics is very reasonable and really worth it. Because of this our country will be really progressive especially in the field of tourism. Jobs will be open for so many people. It will also help our country to be more famous. Because of this, tourists will be more attracted to know our country more.

  37. Hosting the Olympics which is running for more than centuries is a great honor for the country that was chosen to host in their land. And of course, who would like to show their country looks like trash when they are hosting the event? The money they will spend to make their selves presentable is all worth it. It is very famous and will mark as one of the host's historic events. Prestige from hosting the said event will attract trade and tourism. Jobs will be opened and businesses will expand. There will be a huge boost in the country's economy. So its all worth it to spend huge amount of money and be presentable to host the historic event.

  38. Spending a lot of money to build a structure and establishments for special events like Olympics is really reasonable and worth it.Since that the country is the host of Olympics, which is a very prestigious event. It's a structure so it will last and can be a attraction for the event.

  39. Spending a lot of it is just a waste of money but if this will help a lot of people, just like employing them will be a great help for them and their country because it will lessen those people who are not employed plus this is a big event, everyone knows about this thing thus making it reasonable to be worth spending for. Next is that this will attract a lot of foreigners because if this event will happen in your country, there will be lots of people who will watch that big event who came from different parts of the world.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Structures and establishments like this is a lot of help not only for the people but also for the country. Spending and building these are not only just for the purpose of 'showing-off'.

Some benefits, it will attract foreigners and the Olympics will have its own place to be held in. To be the host of some of the biggest events in the world will surely promote the country. :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Well, using a lot of money in these events are actually good most of the time, as special events encourage people to come. People, along with the government, could easily take advantage of this. Tourism should ring a bell. By taking advantage of the large amount of people going to the event, we could expect that they might need some services or things, and we could make the preparations for those situations and charge money from them, right? Well, aside from the many people going in, we could also take advantage of special events by letting people see how our country is ideal for their needs and wants, that it would be good choice going to our country for entertainment, business, education, etc. and encouraging growth. Well, what is wrong with spending a lot of money is that when there are times when there are more practical solutions, and yet we use a lot of money for rushing things; isn't that such a waste? It's not always about the amount of money; even though money talks, there is also the matter of efficiency, right? Sometimes you do not notice that you could really do a lot more with your money, and this happens usually when we have a lot of money; we tend to use money as if it's nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Why don't we give the best that you can give to all the people that will use it, because they deserve it. Olympics happens only every 4 years. And this is such an opportunity if your country was chosen to host this event. For me, this is not only for the athletes that will compete their countries but in London as well because after the Olympics it will help to gain more tourists that will add up to their money..

    ReplyDelete
  43. Allocating government funds is an important and crucial decision.
This choice may either increase your country's economy or waste years of hardships and labor.

I think doing this would be one of the best choices to pick - spending our budget for the Olmypics. There are a lot of benefits you could get from this, such as : an increased tourist activity in the country, accommodating world-class athletes with a world-class venue, prestige for the government, and appreciation from the citizens.

The Olympics happen every four years so it's good to make the most out of it. I do hope that the hosts for the upcoming Olympics would be able to allot time and effort as how London did theirs.

  44. United Kingdom has always been living up to its elite-type of living. Monarchy reigns in there so it's just really "usual" for them to open to its citizens such extravagant place, especially when The Olympics comes into picture.

Well, if you're asking if these ostentatious allocations are really necessary, then I'd say not really. They could have used that for other infrastructures like hospitals, Science laboratories, schools, buildings for the needy and any other establishments WORTHIER of spending money on. Millions just to elevate The Olympics experience? Not a really clever move they did there.

  45. Spending a lot of money to build structures or establishments for special events, like the Olympic Park, is reasonable. It will benefit the citizens in the country not only the athletes. It will attract tourists and it also means that there will be more job opportunities for the unemployed. The country will also be recognized thus, promoting the beautiful country and its landmarks.

  46. I believe that this structure is reasonable enough to be made. It's a proof that the government funds doesn't simply go to waste.
It doesn't benefit me, as a person though. But as a Filipino citizen, it shall benefit me because it benefits the people representing my country, the people who are really interested and concerned about this.

  47. Having this structure is awesome. This is a big help for London because there's a chance that Olympics will always happen there. A high class establishments will also bring tourists around the world to London and in effect, London's economy will increase. It will be popular and be a history of all time. All athletes around the world can gather and compete now in just one place.

  49. Building such awesome structure is really a reasonable one. Having this world-class structure will be known and be famous all over the world. In effect, tourist will be eager to see the famous structure and eventually turn into a tourist spot. This will help increase the employment rate and will increase the condition of the economy. This will surely help the people living in such country.

  50. Building structures like this are so reasonable, why? To improve the country's tourism, the economy of the country will grow. I know by myself that im not the only one who will benefit in this, but all of us.

    ReplyDelete
  51. An example benefit of building infrastructures for occasional events is the promotion of the country's tourism. For an occasional event such as the Olympics, it will boost the country's number of tourists who will watch the said event. But even with that benefit, it is not necessary to build such "occasional" infrastructures. I mean, they should just build some houses for the homeless or even agencies that will help the poor. But I think it is not that bad to build such infrastructures.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Tourism is a major factor in the economy of the country. And structures like this helps attract more tourists to visit the area. It's like how people are attracted to Disneyland or in The Eiffel Tower. I believe this will help London but I hope they wouldn't forget that there are more things to prioritize.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I think building structures and establishments like these for special events like the Olympics is fairly reasonable. Building such establishments can show off the architectural beauty of which that country possesses. It may also come in handy in attracting more tourists to go to their country and will also serve as a means of entertainment for us.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I'm not against the huge money that is used for this establishment because I think this establishment is impressive and it can attract tourist in their country and also the money used for the renovation is not to complain at all because as my economics teacher said money should not be directly spend but rather it should be put into something functional that can make you earn more rather than what you have :D

  55. Tourism means the principle of traveling for pleasure. Many people are in the habit of traveling over different countries in order to see the places of their respective interests like the structures of sculptural beauty, attractive spots of nature and so on. So, we find a lot of foreign tourists in different countries.

The travels of the foreign tourist bring a lot of money to the countries where they travel. Hence, tourism has become a source of income for the countries to which the tourists come. Hence, tourism is now developing as a great industry. In the world of 1971, the total turnover from it was fifteen thousand crores of rupees. Over one hundred and eighty million people were involved in this industry. Such a great industry cannot be ignored by India which abounds in the spots of tourist-interest. Beside, India wants to earn foreign exchange to strengthen her financial position.

This kind of establishment is worth spending for because it really helps in the economy of London. This can also be one of the pride of London and one of the best tourist spot like the Eiffel tower. But dont forget that all things have advantages and disadvantages so put the important things first. :))))

  57. Yes, it's reasonable. Building these kinds of infrastructures would mean a lot to unemployed workers. It will also improve the country's tourism.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Well in being a host, you need to make an impression, so I am pretty much off the hook in this. Well this could cause a positive externality like it could become a tourist spot after the Olympics. It just needs a bit of strategy.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Yes somehow they have substantial reasons.

I would be enumerating SOME BENEFITS

-it would attract tourists , which would promote the country
    -it would bring money

now that I have given SOME BENEFITS , it is not necessarily essential to create establishments for every occasion , there are always alternative ways to compensate the problems of the country , not just by simply implying the "Sim City" way.

    ReplyDelete
  60. We should support the athletes for their effort to make their fellow citizens proud and maybe this is such a very attractive place for everyone but I can't find its worth. There are more important things to prioritize.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I think spending a lot in building establishments for special events like the Olympics is quite unreasonable. Yes, this can promote tourism, provide a place for entertainment and increase employment rate but I think there are already lot of places wherein these special events can take place so I think instead of building new structures like these, why not just add these to the budget for building schools or hospitals or roads or house for homeless people.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Being an Olympian in a single Olympiad is truly a remarkable achievement. Their experience in a 16-day sporting affair would be great and will be greater if the host nation build state-of-the art gymnasiums just for them.I know this is quite expensive but this has reasons.

In we are given a "golden" opportunity to be the host nation, this will be the adv. and the disadv. of hosting:
Tourism, yes, because it is already some sort of a promotion of their country. Economically, "NO!" , because they spent billions of money. Imagine, the expenditures of London 2012 would surpass the National Budget of the Philippines as of 2013.
So before we host, we should be ready. :D

  63. I think spending in this kind of event is reasonable and worth it. This shows how a country value such special event like the Olympics for building structures and establishments to showcase its country, it is very beneficial. As for me the benefits of this to us and to our country: it can promote our country's traditions and tourists spots, especially we Filipinos are known to be very hospitable. It can strengthen our country's relation between the other nations and can build-up harmonious relationship in showing how we value them. And also it can help to encourage tourists to feel at home in the Philippines specially with the establishments and it can promote jobs to every Filipino. Its very worth it.

  64. The Olympics deserves that kind of preparation. They do have substantial reasons on why they have spent a lot of money for that event, especially it somehow shows their country's cultural activities and helps them improve their tourism.

  65. Spending a lot of money to build structures or establishments for special events like the Olympics really have substantial reasons. We all know that the Olympic Park was constructed for the Olympics and Paralympics. It is also more attractive because of the world-class facilities used to build it. I think that this kind of structure really needs a lot of money to be built successfully. So for me, it's okay because it is for a good purpose.

  66. I believe spending lots of money with this kind of things is quite unreasonable. Maybe a little of the budget maybe but not all. Because somehow tourism will be more developed and investments will be improved.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I think that spending money is enough, but not a lot of money. I would prefer to allocate the other money to other concerns but I think it still really depends. I guess we could utilize these infrastructures for tourist attractions and such.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Spending a lot of money to build structures and establishments for special events have its own substantial reason. There are many benefits to a certain country. First is tourism, many tourist will be attracted to these kind of parks, as we all know, many of the tourists are maintaining physical fitness. Another on is employment. There will be more jobs for the people with these kind of establishments, which will make a country progress.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Yes, it do have substantial reasons because by spending money for special events like the Olympics opens job opportunities for the country that will host the Olympics. For me it is a kind of entertainment and an inspirarion to improve my skills needed and persue the sport that I am in to. For our country, job opportunities.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I think we can spend money for such establishments like this for this can be used to promote a country's tourism, can give job opportunities, and can help build our country's relationship to other countries. Of course, we would want to have this world-class to invite more people in.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Allocating a huge amount of money to build infrastructures like this will be alright as long as the amount of money is reasonable. The government will not spend a very huge money if they will not see the possible positive externalities in this project. Tourism and Employment will be greatly affected. Many tourists will be encouraged to visit the country because of the featured landmarks and places then it will become a tourist spot. In that case, there will be a need to expand and they will need more employees to work for them. So it will result to a low unemployment rate. Lastly, the country will be part of the history.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Most first world countries would say that building structures such as the Olympic park can be substantial. Although to other third world countries, an Olympic park is the least in their priorities, there is more to their country than just spending a huge amount of money for building an Olympic park.

But taking into consideration the possibility of improving the economy of a country, building an Olympic park is not that bad of an idea. Building a structure as such has its own perks. First, the athletes of that country can train for future events and competition. Second, it will increase tourism and commercialize the country. Lastly, the country will develop world class athletes that will bring title and honor for their nationalities.

In my own opinion. With all due respect. I think it is really stupid for the Philippines to build Olympic Parks. Yes, they can help us in developing tourism in the country and economy. Its just being impractical. But as i said earlier, it is not that bad of an idea. :)

  73. I don't think the reason for spending this kind of money for these establishment are rational. Yes maybe you can get SOME BENEFITS but, are they worthy of such huge sums of money? i definitely think not. They could have used their money for other infrastructures like hospitals, schools or better way of using it, they could have donated the money to us. Not a bad idea.

  74. I think that allotting huge money for this kind of infrastructures is reasonable because that buildings will gave opportunity for their country to show their wealth and their capabilities because it will represent their country due to the fact that the WORLD is behind them.
I do not think that Philippines will be benefited by building such infrastructures for the said event because as we all know Philippines is a third-world country can we say that it is reasonable to spend such huge amount of money only for that said event knowing the fact that your fellowmen are experiencing HUNGER

  75. I really don't think that it is reasonable to spend such high amount of money for special events like Olympics. I am not saying that we should stop spending for it because I know that we cannot for we can't deny the benefits that we can get from it like improving the Country's tourism and making the unemployment rate go down. But, we ought to be more practical. We can use it up on more sensible projects, right?

  76. I think it has substantial reasons in allocating a huge amount of money for the Olympics. It is a very huge special event that it needs to have many preparations and huge amount of money in order to be a successful event. These will benefit each country in the world participating in the Olympics with the money used for enhancement of each equipment use for the event which will have an effect to each player participating having confidence and comfortability in each round they take on. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER!!!
